Proudly We Dedicate to Mrs. Margaret Reese As Junior sponsor, Mrs. Reese be- came almost everyone’s friend at one time or another. For three and a half years, Mrs. Reese was at Millbrook and our only wish is that she has stayed longer. Practice what you preach, Mrs. Reese I the 1967 Laurel! If she could, she would help; if she couldn’t, she would tell you so. Here Mrs. Reese prepares to run off several copies of a quiz for her typing I students. 3 Wm ' i- CONTENTS Dedication 2 Foreword - - 6 Features — 7 Activities - - - 33 Sports 51 Classes — - - - - - 73 Advertisements 121 5 jjuirehmrh In this the 20th edition of the Millbrook Laurel, we, the members of the ’67 Laurel Staff have had the responsibility and privilege of preserving for you the memories of Millbrook High 1966- ' 67, We have endeavored to present to you, the student body, an accurate recollection of the experiences and activities of this past year. The title of our yearbook the Laurel was derived from a green foliage of the same name, which represents academic distinction and honor and was used as a crown of victory centuries ago. Today the Laurel is the crowning touch of our school life. It is our wish that, in years to come, you may sit with this book of memories and feel proud of the role you have played in this chapter of the history and progress of Millbrook High School. Mr. Rooks, Millbrook’s new principal, has worked long and hard to make this a successful year. The Hub Of PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE For each of you this marks a mile- stone for which each of you have waited twelve long years. You have experi- enced events you hold with fond re- collections, people you don’t want to forget, memories pleasant to be kept which on retrospect are to be cherished. These have been experiences that will stay with you forever, echoing like the strains of a familiar and haunting melody. I must rejoice, not to see you go, but that you have obtained the goal for which you have long strived. Gradua- tion opens the door of hope, opportunity and happiness. I hope the experiences and knowledge gained during your years at Millbrook will give you the determi- nation to succeed in life, the courage to climb boldly, and the inspiration to set your ambitions high and to strive in- dustriously. 8 Mr. Cobb, our assistant principal, strives to finish his work. )ur School Mrs. Wheeler, Millbrook ' s faithful secretary , Mrs. Creech, our school treasurer, gets her books keeps the phone close at hand while working. i n order. Weeks before, the student body decided on the girls who would represent each class on Homecoming night. Finally it arrived, October 28, the 1966 Homecom- ing. The school day was completed with an enthusi- astic pep rally. Our Wildcat team played a tremendous game against the visiting Clayton Comets, but this was not enough. The game ended with a 26-0 defeat for our team. During the magical half time the nine lovely girls and their escorts were introduced. The crowd hushed as the co -captains, Julian Riddly and Charles Gower, paced from one Senior girl to the next. As Barbara Brown was crowned our 1966 Homecoming Queen and was presented with her bouquet and kiss from the co -captains, the crowd gave her a standing ovation. A blissful mood prevailed as everyone attended the dance honoring the Queen and her court after the game. Yet the thoughts of defeat and the last home game touched the hearts of many, especially the SENIORS. Barbara Brown is crowned by our co -captains. V -I -C -T -O -R-Y -Victory ! 31 Treasured Recollections The many events which are so clear and rele- vant today will tomorrow be cherished, yet fading memories. None of us really want the wheels of time to stop for us yet they seem to turn faster every year. We have much to look forward to and still much to remember. These past years at Millbrook, no matter how many or few, have been some of the most important in our life. For most of us this will be the last year here whether we go on to college or the new high school. The halls, the classrooms, the library, the auditorium, the gym, the football field, the hollow , and the parking lot will long be remembered. But more than this, many long -lasting friendships have grown and matured during the years. How true is the saying Nothing that is can pause or stay . Next year will be an entirely new adventure. As we begin it let us never forget this wonder- ful year, and the many opportunities and activities which have made it important. Some of these have been saved for you in the memory pages of the 1967 LAUREL. Pomp and Circumstance Seniors make lasting friendships. 32 Leadership Practiced in Student Government SEATED: C. Their running game was strong due to fine blocking and swift backs. The Wildcat Bandits Defense is seldom recognized but ours was worth noting. These boys played inspired football throughout the year. 54 Determined Effort Is Keynote Chipper Williams struggles for a loose ball but Julian Riddle has a clear shot at it. Julian Riddle, Chipper Williams, and Bob Wunsch team up to stop a Clayton back at Homecoming. Charles Gower ' s block seems in vain as Gary Blackburn is grabbed by a Clayton tackle. Action Jimmy Weaver starts to roll away from Whitley defenders. 56 A Hard Fought Season Ronnie Chambers throws a block as Ronnie Pasqualone slips through the hole. 57 Steve McKaig grabs a rebound from the hands of a Whitley player as Marvin Waldo reaches in vain. Compliments of FALLON’S FLORISTS Uptown Cameron Village How a stubborn Army man unknowingly helped start Pine State Creamery Company BY JAMES D. KILGORE President, Pine State Creamery Co. Back during the frantic days of World War I, military bases were popping up throughout the country. In Raleigh, plans were being made for the establishment of Camp Polk on the western outskirts of the city. When it was ready, the Army began preparing to send men to train for the fighting in the trenches of France and Germany. Rather suddenly, however, the movement of men and equipment was halted. The commanding officer of the new base, it seems, had learned that Raleigh offered no source of pasteurized milk. No milk, no base, he said rather firmly. Despite the critical need for training bases, the Army agreed with the commanding officer. ★ ★ ★ dairy farmers joined with N. C. State College to set up a small creamery on the college campus. Throughout the war, the facility provided badly- needed pasteurized milk to the rmlitary men. When the war ended, the same group of men decided to continue the enterprise as a private business. Under the direction of Mr. Alvin Reid, Pine State Creamery Company was established at 116 South Salisbury Street in Raleigh. In 1932, Dr. B. W. Kilgore became owner of the company and expanded its services into many other areas of the State. Ea ch year has brought further expansion and more products and services from the company. As we plan for further growth and expansion, one can’t help but wonder what would have hap- pened if it had not been for the stubbornness of After considerable negotiation, a small group of that Army officer more than four decades ago. 123 E.
