A person who raises her voice in anger, but only because of enthusiasm or concern. A person for whom teaching is not merely a profession, but a way of life. As Blue Notes sponsor, Mrs. Pollard explains the essentials of a school paper to Carol A llers and Lynne Y ounger. 4 A person who understands us because she takes time to ask what we believe, what we think, and what we are searching for. With deepest gratitude, we dedicate the 1966 Laurel to MRS. MARIAN POLLARD Third period each day, Mrs. Pollard enjoys her usual, and quite notorious, cup of coffee. With characteristic pose and smile, Mrs. Pollard manages to keep class interesting. 5 Principal Mr. F. B. Williams keeps the school running smoothly through- out the school year. Administrators Sooner or later almost every one comes to the office for help from Mrs. Wheeler, secretary, or Mrs. Creech, treasurer. 6 Mr. Fred Smith, superintendent of the Wake County Schools. The Advisory Council members are Caswell Strickland, George Bowie, Tom Byrum, C. P. Dob- bins, and George Lortz. Co-ordinate School Activity Mr. Williams, along with his many other duties, finds time to counsel Becky An- thony. Assistant Principal Roland Cobb keeps his smile as he copes with the problems that pop up in a school day. 7 Students relax on the grass after lunch. Opportunities Broaden Scope; “What’s that?” Students often find Mrs. Curtis’ study hall to be quite interesting. Time before school and after lunch provides an opportunity for students to relax and socialize, while the library and study hall provide an in- centive for initiative. This is a year of continuing growth for the library. Many new and donated books have been received, and the magazines have been arranged in coherent order in the library’s new Princeton files. They now provide a quick and easy source of reference. Millbrook has pioneered the record collection, being the first school in the county to begin one. As a re- 8 Enhance Interest suit, the record room is always in use, a fa- vorite target for study hall students. Students with earphones listen to the strains of Beethoven and, more often, Peter, Paul, and Mary. Mean- while, other students check out books and magazines or work on research papers. Study hall provides a similar opportunity as the library, but it doesn’t seem to be quite so popular. Students study unfinished assign- ments, start whispered gossip, and sometimes play practical pranks behind the teacher’s back. The library provides a quiet, restful atmosphere for study. Serving the School in Mrs. Council, new lunchroom supervisor, is beginning to put into effect many ideas for the improvement of the school lunchroom. a sight familiar to all students is the window in the lunchroom where empty trays are deposited. The cafeteria workers are: Mildred Averett, Cleta Hildebrand, Bethel Penny, Helen Arrington, Alma Jones, Ethel Leggett, Ruby Alan, Lessie Robinson, and Mrs. Frances Council, su- pervisor. !0 Various Capacities CWlliL loo-o® - S- xxnuisL j X. AvWjCb u Mr. Winborne, Millbrook’s mailman, performs an invaluable service to the school. Keeping the school clean is no easy task, but custodians Gus Williams, Laura Richardson, Lessie Finch, Zella Walker, and Archie Robinson do a wonderful job. MHS The 1965 Marshals were: Terry Creech; Teddie Parrish; Head Mar- shal; Coleen Holden; Eddie Aider- man; Donna Duty; Colon Terrell; Joe Flythe; Larry Hicks; Jay Harward;and Jimmy Hunt. 12 Teens Boast Varied Honors Teddie Parrish listens to French tape at Salem Col- lege where she attended Governor’s School. Julian Riddle and Larry Hicks attended the Student Council Workshop held at Mars Hill. Ricky Barbour, Colon Terrell, and Don Sigmon attended the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Black Moun- tain. 13 Homecoming Sparks School Spirit The long-awaited 1965 Homecoming came to Millbrook on November 12 as the Wildcats played host to Wake Forest’s Red Devils. Lady Lack rode not with the ’Cats. Time and again the Wildcats drove deep into Wake Forest ter- ritory only to be halted. At the half Millbrook was trailing, 7 to 13. Despite a tremendous performance by Millbrook, Wake Forest man- aged to penetrate the Wildcat defense, result- ing in three quick touchdowns and a victory for the visitors. Earlier in the week, nine lovely young ladies had been selected to represent Mill- brook’s student body. At halftime, the climax of the evening arrived. The crown, ac- companied by a bouquet and kisses from the football tri-captains, was placed on the head of Pat Denton. Tri-captain Colon Terrell gives Queen Pat Denton a congratulatory kiss. Senior Attendants: Coleen Holden and Nancy lessee. 14 Freshman Attendants: Diana Dell’Erba and Betty Hatcher. Sophomore Attendants: and Vickie Perry. Connie O’Hair Junior Attendants: Barbara Brown and Carolyn Marks. Pat Denton reigned as Homecoming Queen, 1965. Assemblies Unify Student Body Larry Hicks, president of the student body, presides over the assemblies. Walking proudly, the senior class takes the un- forgettable march down the aisle during as- sembly. Black-out curtains cover the windows as students watch a film during assembly. 16 17 Jay Harward and Don Sigmon make use of the over-head pro- jector during a physics class. Future Scientists Exciting Julian Riddle and Charles Gower conquer the chemistry lab with Bunsen burner and test tube. Gary Jewell and Dan McAuliffe inhale a fresh batch of oxygen in chemistry lab. Surrounded by the tools of his trade, Mr. Pleasants teaches a physical science class. 18 Explore New and Horizons Mr. Harrell’s sophomores are engrossed in their study of biology during lab period. Mrs. Harbison’s power of concentration may have an effect on the accuracy of the balance scales. In coaching and teaching biology, Mr. Harrell faces a challenging combination. 19 Better Jobs Offered “No, Bobby, this lever doesn’t automatically erase your mistakes,” explains Mrs. Reese to Bobby Walkup and Ricky Barbour. Donna Bailey and Gloria Fulcher prepare a bulletin board in Mrs. Berry’s room for D. E. After lunch students find the typing room is a good place to practice typing and to catch up on homework. 20 :o Prepared Students Teaching two other subjects besides business math, Mrs. Curtis is ready for the bell after a full day. Keeping a list of eligible workers and job openings is a vital function to Mrs. Berry in teaching D. E. Distributive education students hurry to their cars on the way to work. | iaf - ft HTs TjJij ' .j 21 Mathematical Concepts Broaden Buck Pace and Barbara Y oung find the slide rule more elusive than it looks. Miss Pate seems to be waiting for the answer to hit her. Actually she knows the answer but she is hoping one of her algebra students will know. Advanced math keeps seniors on their toes. 22 A jiPiUPi mi_ | Academic Scopes Mrs. Fisher draws solids to explain certain principles in math class. Study? Glenn Musser, Donna Bailey, and Jerry Harwell find that studying math is always easier outside. When the lunch bell rings Mr. Farthing is the first one out the door, but he is followed closely by Phil Thomas and Lamar Jones. 23 Student Skills Improved Through Vocational Instruction “I’m trying not to laugh, Wanda, but that zipper is sewed in back- wards, says Mrs. Pendleton to Wanda Muster. Donna Henderson, Ellen Waddail, and Sue Dalton enjoy looking through a pattern book in the home ec living room. During a home ec class, Betsy Mills shows her handiwork on the machine to Ellen Waddail. 24 Mr. Winborne supervises closely John Muster’s welding as he shows the techniques to Jerry Gunter and Wayne A verett. Mr. Winborne shows Dave Calloway the answers he has missed on an agriculture test. 25 Mastering Native and Foreign Surrounded by a freshman English class, Mrs. Thomas is right at home among her students. Mrs. Pollard stands at her door trying to convince students that English isn’t really so bad. Mrs. Fisher makes sure Mike Ellis learns the fundamentals of writing by asking him to read his theme. While giving a book report, Eddie Alderman captures the unfaltering attention of the class. Shakespeare, one of Mrs. Seago’s favorite subjects in English literature, is emphasized strongly to her senior English classes. Mrs. Haywood discusses with Lee Hunt the ad- vantages of learning French. In addition to civics, Mrs. Fisher also teaches freshman and sophomore Eng- lish. 27 History students watch a broadcast on television as part of their daily studies. Joe Ferrell finds world geography a breeze with the help of Mr. Har- rell. Social Sciences Changing Don Sigmon’s lightning fast arm hits the air! Randy Lee finds that getting the wrong book doesn’t help when you’re late for civics. 28 “And any other answer is wrong,” says Mr. Cobb in regard to grading a history test. Yield Clues to a World Mr. Pleasants lectures to a civics class. And they’re off! The bell rings end- ing U.S. History and students scurry to second period. 29 Social Sciences, Cont. Mr. Williams projects a better understanding of civics to his class. Mrs. Thomas presents an effective talk in govern- ment as Susan Honeycutt casts an attentive glance. 30 Physical education develops mind and body, and these freshman stu- dents prove it. A Modern-Day Essential — Physical Fitness Studies in health complete a well-rounded program. 31 Guidance helpers Rita Paynter and Deborah Hux keep the guidance bulletin board up-to- date. Numerous Activities Complement Guidance Mrs. Johnston consults with Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Pol- lard to formulate better techniques in advising students. Eddie Alderman, JoeFlythe, and Pat Denton look over literature to help them de- cide on a college choice. 32 Activities 33 Amid Work and Worry ’66 LAUREL Become: Margaret Haithcock, Gail Bartholomew, Joe Bargamian, Georgia Norwood, and Glenn Williams gain valuable experience by working on ’66 Laurel. The Laurel Staff of 1966 wishes to convey its deep apprecia- tion to the many people who have made this yearbook possible. . . To our patrons who were thoughtful enough to buy advertise- ments, without whom this book could not have been produced. To Mrs. Haywood, to whom we can find no adequate words to express our indebtedness for all her patient guidance and sug- gestions . To the faculty, who we hope realize that through their unfailing patience with classroom interruptions and their under- standing our work has been made much easier. Last, but certainly not least, to all students who gave their time to sell advertisements and to publish the 1966 Laurel. The Editors Q ' KcjlLuo . v tGvx. P ' oj . VvoJ uM.?
