Only one thing endures, and that is char- acter. --Horace Greeley An image of our school is being built every day from the impressions the students make. As the story of Millbrook High School unfolds on the pages before you, we hope you will see how these students are working every day to create an image of last- ing character and virtue for the school they attend. With this, the senior class presents to you LAUREL 65. 2 CONTENTS DEDICATION 4 ADMINISTRATION 5 SERVICE 7 THEME 8 DEPARTMENTS 10 ACTIVITIES 18 CLUBS 23 SPORTS 37 CLASSES 49 ADVERTISEMENTS 95 DEDICATION Because they have given us the leadership we need both on and off the field and court, the senior class dedicates the LAUREL 1965 to COACH PAT HARRELL and COACH FRED WILLIAMS The coaches have earned the ready respect of all the students with their sincere concern for all who surround them. LEADERS LEAVE THEIR IMPRESSIONS Mr. F. B. Williams, Principal Mrs. Wheeler, Secretary Mrs. Creech, Bookkeeper Mr. R. B. Cobb, Jr. , Assistant Principal 5 THEIR INFLUENCE HELPS WORTHY CAUSES OUR PTA OFFICERS . . . are the leaders in trying to get a new ac- tivity bus for the school - this will never be forgotten. Jack Allers, Bill Summey, Margaret Bowie, Marguerite Gower OUR COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT, Mr. Fred Smith . . . leads us in striving for each present and future goal. OUR SCHOOL COMMITTEE . . . guides our school into the future with better ment in mind. From left to right: Caswell Strickland, George Bowie, Tom Byrum, C. P. Dobbins, George Lortz 6 SERVICE TO OTHERS IS APPRECIATED The personnel, Ora Haithcock, Ruby Allen, Bethal Penny, Alma Jones, Mildred Averette, Lessie Robertson, Mertie Howard, and Lottie West, whose job it is to serve our lunches, is thoroughly enjoying the enlarged cafeteria, Our mailman, Jay Ellington, works daily to assist the office with the incoming and out- going mail. It ' s a big job, but, our custodians do wonder- ful work in the maintenance of our campus. They are Lessie Finch, George Griffin, Beu- lah Meek, Gus Williams, and Zella Walker. 7 MILLBROOK’S IMAGE - VIRTUE 8 9 School ACQUIRING AND APPLYING The foreign language students may not be- lieve it but French can be made easy through the use of bulletin boards. Mrs. Seago emphasizes to her students the importance of creative writing in a mini- mum time limit. Mrs. Haywood is trying for the first time to take double duty with combined Latin I and II classes. B HITT ANY i6rk, FRANCE BERRY eURCWMOY MASSlFCENtflAt. BlIC AY PYRSN Lively panel discussions aid the study of sen- ior English and sometimes even hinders it. 10 A KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGE Verb conjugations aren ' t easy, but Mrs. Pollard helps her students as much as she can. Mrs. Thomas explains the ever - evident symbolism in Great Expectations to her freshman English students. Practicing public speaking can be rather difficult for some, but it is more often very hilarious. The parts of speech are clearly defined through the explicit instructions of Mrs. Thomas. MATHEMATICS FOR PROGRESS Miss Pate goes over a test that she didn ' t think was so hard but her Algebra I students disagree. Business math is a new subject being taught at Millbrook this year. It sometimes proves to be a very interesting class when certain students get the urge to give Mrs. Cu rtis quite a bit of unwanted help (?). How about it, Mike, Clem, and Billy? Mr. Farthing’s students are mostly at odds with themselves when he starts spouting axioms, laws, and rules. 12 SCIENCE FOR A BETTER WORLD Mr. Harrell works diligently to plant facts about plant life (and animal life, for that matter) in his students ' heads. Mr. Pleasants is one of the two teachers tak- ing over the instruction of physical science which is a new subject being taught at Mill- brook this year. This new course includes writing and balancing chemical equations, which is one of the many things the students did not get in general science. Poor confused Bryan! He. just can ' t seem to learn how to work those problems dealing with chemical equations. 13 TODAY S AND TOMORROW S LEADERS IN The girls taking third year home economics have had a six weeks course this year on baby care. Here a few of the girls look on as Mrs. Hill, the demonstrator, uses a doll to show them how to bathe such a small thing. As Mrs. Pendleton strives to stress the im- portance of calcium in the body, she uses charts so that the home economics students might get the full meaning of this vitamin and what it does. Here, she points out the calcium content of cheese. Practice makes perfect, says Mrs. Reese to her Typing I students. They have to do a lot of it in order to have better speed and fewer errors. Some wonder how much prac- tice it does take. 14 BUSINESS AND VOCATIONAL The boys in agriculture learn many trades that will be very valuable to them in a few years, one of these being welding. Here, Wayne Holliday demonstrates acetylene welding to some boys in his second period ag class. Our Distributive Education Club has made very good showings at the conventions in the past few years. In November, this year ' s was held in Roxboro. Beforehand, Mrs. Berry helped by telling her classes some of the things they would have to do in the presence of the judges. Mr. Winborne leads his FFA boys in learn- ing many kinds of work that will develop and increase their skills. These skills will be a good guidance in the years before them whether it is personal work or a career in public service. 15 SOCIAL STUDIES FOR A BETTER FUTURE Mr. Cobb has a full time job teaching the two history classes as well as being assistant Principal. Here he leads the world history class in an open discussion on the Renaissance before the telecast. We, as citizens of the United States, should recognize and understand our rights and duties of citizenship. Civics deals with this problem and helps Millbrook students get acquainted with what they face as future citizens. The study of economics deals with the laws affecting the production, distribution, and consumption of wealth. This will help the students have a better understanding of their personal financial problems as well as their country’s. 16 The library assistants are ready and willing to help Mrs. Dalton and the students when they ask. quiet can be found, most of the time. Judy Davis and Sue Dalton are getting the books ready to be returned to the shelves. 17 18 MILLBROOK STUDENTS WILL NEVER FORGET . . . Through the efforts of our freshman sponsors, we were soon organized and had elected Ijar Carter, David Pattishall, Kathy Holden, Jackie Evans, Clem Williams, and Bucky Howard to lead the class. The fall of ' 62 brought a new breed of sophomores with the vital experience of co-operation. With the help and understanding of our advisors, our class officers, Dan Funderburk, David Pattishall, Kathy Holden, Sue Jones, Wanda Hardin, Bucky Howard, and Clem Williams, lead the class to a glorious success in our spring dance, Dogv ood Festival. Our third year of high school brought with it a terrific burden of responsibility. We elected capable leaders to assume some of this responsibility and to guide the class in its many activities. Dan Funderburk, David Pattishall, Vicki Harper, Sue Jones, Billy Walton, and Bucky Howard proved their ability in the accomplishments of our magazine sale. Our biggest event was made possible through the advice of Mrs. Reese, Mrs. Thomas, and Miss Hatcher; the dream of Moonlight and Roses became a beautiful reality of a Junior-Senior Prom at Memorial Auditorium. With the benefit of Career Day and the excitement of ordering class rings, we faced the year ahead as seniors. Our first trip down the aisle was led by our new officers; Dan Funderburk, Kathy Holden, Vicki Harper, Linda Hilliard, Toni Ketner, William Bailey, and Sue Jones. The excitement of Homecoming brought the memory of those who have represented our class through the years; Faye Tharrington, Kathy Holden, and Wanda Hardin. This year, the Homecoming Queen was our own queen, Kathy Holden, attended by Joyce Wrape and Wanda Hardin. We received our class rings and with them the distinction of being the first class to have our own school seal, designed by Betty Brinkley, en- graved on the side. Thoughts of the future were stirred up by College Day at Reynolds Coliseum. Mascots were chosen and with the encouragement of Mrs. Haywood and Mrs. Seago, our advisors, we started a new semester, our last at Millbrook. We were measured for caps and gowns and began thinking about a senior play. After being honored at our last dance, we seniors looked back on our four years of high school and realized the true meaning of our motto: In life there are no final exams; the tests come every day. Now as we await commencement and the end of our days at M. H. S. , we possess a far greater insight into the future and we feel we are better prepared for life on a far greater campus . . . the world! 94 The editors wish to sincerely thank the business establishments represented for their support of the 1965 LAUREL. We strongly advocate the patronage of these firms by the student body of Millbrook. 95 Dining Chicken Seafood Barbecue Catering Take-Out Service Food for the Children 828-4353 U.
