: ixt (jeĀ e i Cjf-. -Ucl . r !| ffl ' Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1958, wish to dedicate our prized work and possession to die ones who have helped us through the most important part of our life. These persons have shared our joys and heartaches through the years: tolerated us when we were un- ruly; comforted us when we were depressed; guided us in our decisions; and loved us at all times. Words cannot express our gratitude, but perhaps in this gesture we can in a small way show our devo- tion and appreciation to you who have inspired us to better things. Through all our laughter and all our tears you have always been beside us with deep concern to in- spire us onward into life’s swirling seas of opportunity. Although we owe you more than we could ever re- pay in one mortal’s life, may this be die first steppingstone in expressing our love and gratitude, as we dedicate this edition of the Laurel to you, OUR DEAR PARENTS. Pfifu As we approach our final months in school, we, the seniors, are looking toward graduation which we know must come. It is with great sorrow we leave Millbrook High and the happy years spent here. This annual is our going away present to the school we hold so dear in our hearts. It is our way of thanking everyone who has been a part of these four memorable years. KIT LORTZ , Editor p. Z. A. Officers President MRS. G. E. LORTZ Second Vice President MRS. Looking back over the years which you have spent as students in the Millbrook School, it is with a certain degree of pride and satisfaction that I assure you that there is evidence of satisfactory growth and development among you as individuals and as a group. As you continue to make progress, may you be reminded that the true greatness of a man is not meas- ured by the amount of this world’s goods which he may be able to accumulate, but rather by the service which he is able to render to his fellow men. With this in mind, may you continue to go forward with the determination to develop and use your abilities to the fullest. Principal, F. B. Williams History and Physical Education MR. BENTON F. Mascots DONNIE BRUCE CAROL COCKMAN Class Poem FAREWELL As these four years come to an end, Our hearts are a little sad To say farewell to a dear old friend And all of the fun we ' ve had. Now we leave with a heavy heart The school we love so dear, But there will always be a part Of us - that will seem to linger here. The joyous memories we have shared We ' ll cherish through the years. For they can never be compared. Through sorrow, joy, -or trouble’s tears. Our high school days will forever be The years we will never regret; The work, the fun, we ' U forever see And our class - We’ll never forget. To those who have strived to guide us - Our parents, our teachers, our friends - You will always walk here beside us, For your patience and love never ends. No more through these halls will we wander, No more will we walk hand in hand; But in memories we ' ll be together Forever — united - - we stand. Though the road to success we may travel, Though our lives be filled with despair; As the secret of life may unravel, We look onward to the sky far up there. May your colors always be flying In all you seek and strive. Leading us always and ever, Leaving your mem ' ry alive. But even though we must leave you, Remember this class long and well. Our hearts will ever be with you! Over the years as your students excel. Keep your banner forever on high! CLASS OF ' 58 Betty Rose King Class Poet Class History The Class of 58 began high school as Freshmen, September 2 , 1954, under the direction of Miss Myra Olive, The officers were: President, MARGIE HAWKINS; Vice President, STEWART WILSON; Sec- retary, CAROL SMITH; Treasurer, BOBBIE SUE NORWOOD; Historian, TOMMY BUCHANAN; Devotional Chairman, KIT LORTZ; Program Co-Chairmen, JACK GARRETT and FAITH DANIELSON. MARGIE HAWKINS and WHITT STALLINGS were the Queen and King for Halloween. They made an excellent showing and had the second largest number of votes, next to the Seniors. A class party was held in November in the recreation room. In February, 1955, the class presented a comedy for an assembly program. The class elected MARGIE HAWKINS and UNWOOD BARHAM to be attendants for the King and Queen of the May Court. STEWART WILSON and LINWOOD BARHAM were on the baseball team and both hit home runs. In the Science Fair, JOYCE MEARES won a red ribbon for her kaleidoscope, and TOMMY BUCH- ANAN won a blue one for his astronomy exhibit. TOMMY ' S project went to both the district and the state science fairs. At last, we moved into the new high school building just in time for final exams! This building was a refreshing change and we found the individual lockers very convenient. For having high scholastic averages, CAROL SMITH, TOMMY BUCHANAN, and LINWOOD BAR- HAM were marshals at the Graduation Exercises. LINW 0OD had the highest average in high school. Added to our forty-nine original members during the year were GENE DAVIS, GEORGE WALTERS, UNDA WHITWORTH, DELQRESE HORTON, and LIDDIE MAE SEAGROVES. But we lost JAMES O ' BRIAN, MYRTLE ANN ADAMS, ISABEL JOURNIGAN, and JULIA HICKS. We gained and lost BARBARA COATS, GERALDINE ROWLAND, and BOBBY MCDONALD. Mrs. Rogers and Mr. Johnson were our Sophomore home room teachers. Our officers were; President, UNWOOD BARHAM; Vice President, JOYCE MEARES; Secretary, MARION QUESSENBERRY; Treasurer, CHARLES PRITCHARD; and Historian, TOMMY BUCHANAN. EVERETTE NEWTON and CAROLYN DEAN were elected to be King and Queen of our class for the Harvest Festival. In April, 1956, we held a class party at Lake Mir!. MARGIE HAWKINS and ALEXANDER AVERETT were our attendants in the May Court. JOYCE MEARES was outstanding in Music that year and represented our class by singing solos before outside groups. She won a prize in the Woman ' s Club Essay Contest. Some of our boys were on winning teams in the F. F. A. contests. Among them were; EVERETTE NEWTON, LINWOOD BARHAM, JIMMY SMITH, ROBERT WEATHERSPOON , and JOE SMITH. UNWOOD showed skill in baseball, pitching a no-score game. He also won the Safety Slogan Contest. CUFFORD CHAPPELL, UNWOOD BARHAM, and TOMMY BUCHANAN were marshals for Graduation Exercises. This year we had gained SHIRLEY DRAKE, THOMAS STEVENS, CUFFORD CHAPPELL, CURTIS NIP- PER, and HOWARD CUPP since the end of last year. At the same time, we had lost HOWARD CUPP, UNDA WHITWORTH, GENE DAVIS, BILLY RAY WEST, and MRS. WILLYS, the former GLORIA LAMM. Next year, the Junior officers were; President, STEWART WILSON; Vice President, KIT LORTZ; Secretary, PATRICIA BUTLER; Treasurer, CAROLYN DEAN; Historian, TOMMY BUCHANAN, with assistant, MARGIE HAWKINS; Reporter, JACK GARRETT. Class History Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Hill were home room teachers. Our attendants for the Homecoming Football Game on October 19 were MARGIE HAWKINS and ALEXANDER AVERETT. WHITT STALLINGS and JEANETTA FULLER were candidates for King and Queen of the Harvest Festival. In our magazine campaign, sales totaled nearly $1,300. The leading salesmen were FAITH DAN- IELSON, TOMMY BUCHANAN, CHARLIE PRITCHARD, JACK GARRETT, KIT LORTZ, and CAROLYN HUNT. On November 30, 1956, after much work, practice, and preparation, we put on our Junior Play, Beauty and the Beef, in which most of us performed. After the exciting experience of acting, we had refreshments in the cafeteria. We enjoyed a party on New Year ' s Eve at the Pritchards ' home and another in May at Doak’s Camp. The former was sponsored by some grade mothers and, strangely, ended before 12:00! In February, at the Sweetheart’s Dance DELORESE HORTON was elected Queen of Hearts from the High School. In April we attended Career Day at Rolesville School. April 12, 1957, was the climax of the year: the Junior-Senior Banquet with the theme - Beneath the Sea. For weeks we painted an underwater scene and cut out fish; for days and nights we decorated the cafeteria and prepared the sea food. The Mermaids danced, and after the meal, the class offi- cers formed a figure, beginning the dances which lasted until midnight. For May Day, MARION QUESSENBERRY was our Maid of Honor; FAITH DANIELSON and JUDY MAT- THEWS were her attendants. CAROLYN LOOPER won the essay contest in our class. The marshals for the Graduation Exercises were LINWOOD BARHAM, JOYCE ADAMS, and TOMMY BUCHANAN, chief marshal, having the highest scholastic average in the class that year. LINWOOD BARHAM was the best hitter in the Wake County conference. His batting average was .500. At the end of school, we had gained THOMAS TURNER, HENRY JESSUP, HENRY YOUNG, JOE SPENCE, BONNIE HARVEY, and SANDRA BUNN in the past year ' s time. We had lost CAROL SMITH, LARRY GOODWIN, ROBERT JOHNSON, SHIRLEY DRAKE, LEATHA NIPPER, DORIS BURNETTE, IMO- GENE CARTER, HENRY JESSUP, and BILLY MARTIN. We elected the officers for the Senior Class as follows: President, BUDDY POOLE; Vice President, JACK GARRETT; Secretary, BOBBIE SUE NORWOOD; Treasurer, MARGIE HAWKINS; Reporter, DELORESE HORTON; Historian, TOMMY BUCHANAN. Our Senior home room teacher was Mrs. Johnston. After weeks of annoying the teachers and new principal with questions, we received our class rings. Being proud of them, we took every opportunity to flash them at the underclassmen. We elected BUDDY POOLE and JUDY MATTHEWS to represent the class in the annual competition for King and Queen of the Halloween Carnival. JEANETTA FULLER represented Millbrook High School in a parade at Angier, N. C. The Homecoming Football Game was on the night of November 4, 1957. MARION QUESSENBERRY, the Queen, was escorted by ALEXANDER AVERETT; JUDY MATTHEWS, the Senior Attendant, was es- corted by CHARLIE PRITCHARD. This game was a special one, because our team won the county cham- pionship that year. We were proud of our Senior boys who led the way to victory. JACK GARRETT and KIT LORTZ were all- conference players in Wake County. JEANETTA FULLER, DELORESE HORTON, and JUDY MATTHEWS were cheerleaders from our class; JUDY was head cheerleader. As class fund-raising projects, we sold flowers and candy at Homecoming and sponsored dances dur- ing the winter. In November we went to College Day at Knightdale School. JO-ANN STIMPSON and TOMMY BUCHANAN, the most apt science students in our class, took a science talent test with other Wake County students in Raleigh. Since last year ended, JOHN BRADY, DONALD HOLLIDAY, and JESSIE SMITH joined us; CLARA BENTON, ELAINE ALLEN, GEORGE WALTERS, and SANDRA BUNN left us. Such activities as the Junior-Senior, the Senior Play, the Senior Trip, and Graduation Night will always linger in our memories of the good old days at Millbrook High! Sr J Class Historian; TOMMY BUCHANAN Prophecy Driving along the new super highway, designed by none other than our own Kit Lortz and Jack Garrett, the state ' s highest paid engineers, a friend and I see two familiar farmers, Whitt Stallings and Alexander Averette, working in their own private pea-patch, and a healthy pea-patch it is too, for the plants came from Pritchard ' s Nursery where we find our own Charlie Pritchard as the best horticulturist in the state. Speeding on down the highway, a little too rapidly, we are stopped by a patrolman who, luckily for us, is Everette Newton with his assistant, Carolyn Dean. After being allowed to go without a ticket, we continue our trip, and soon we meet a big passenger bus. . . the driver?. . . Why, it ' s Carolyn Hunt, the owner of her own bus line. Waving a friendly hello, we continue on our way. A short distance ahead we stop for a quick lunch where our own Joyce Adams is the dietitian. A delicious lunch it is too, and it should be, for Marion Quessen- berry works there as the tastetester. It seems that Marion ' s experience in chemistry class stayed with her. While still at the luncheon, Joyce tells us about the business next door where Thomas Stevens spends his time teaching muscle building. Wonder how those two businesses managed to be next door to each other? Looking at our watches, we realize that it is time to leave. Soon we stop at Poole’s Station, where Buddy has quite a profitable business. Could it be because Judy Matthews is doing such an efficient job of keeping his books? After leaving the station we meet, head on, on our side of the road, two of our boys, Stewart Wilson and Joe Spence, who are now members of Uncle Sam’s Navy and Marines. Possessing several scratches, we are scurried to the hospital while Henry Young tows our damaged cars to the Martin-Nipper-Young Garage where BiUy, Curtis, and Henry operate quite a prosperous business. While entering the hospital we are met by several reporters who question us about the wreck. One of the cub reporters, whom we are quite surprised to see, is Shirley Strickland, who now spends her time covering new stories. Finally getting inside the hospital, we are taken to the receptionist ' s desk where Jessie Lee Dyer is doing a very neat and efficient job as the hospital’s top secretary. After our scratches have been checked and found to be minor by Dr. Danny Boykin and his private nurse, Delorese Horton, we wait at the receptionist’s desk for our dismissal from the hospital, where we see also Faith Danielson whose name we hear called quite often over the intercom. At last we are allowed to leave the hospital and on our short walk to the garage after our car, we see Fuller- Smith Beauty School where Joe Smith and Jeannetta Fuller are doing rather well at styling and cutting hair. May- be it is because Clifford Chappell is doing such a fine job of drawing those beautiful models for advertising. At last we arrive at the air peart just in time to catch our plane, and what a plane! A new scientific creation designed and piloted by Tommy Buchanan with Jo -Ann Sampson, a very neat and trim stewardess. Taking our seat upon the plane, we are surprised to see John Brady, who is now a wild life conservationist at the mountain resort where we are going, seated across the aisle from us. Talking to him we are very interested to learn that some of our seniors have made stars of themselves. Patricia Butler and Joyce Meares are starring as a song and dance team on Broadway, and Eric Davis is one of the highest paid comedians in his field. Linwood Earl Bar- ham ' s dream finally came true also. He is now a top player for the New York Yankees. We soon reach our destination where we are going to spend a nice long vacation of horseback riding, swim- ming, skiing, and just having fun. More fun than we realize is in store for us, for we find that Bonnie Harvey is the social director. Jimmy Smith teaches swimming, and Donald Holliday is a riding instructor. At last it is time for us to begin our journey home. Relaxing on our flight home, we enjoy a popular maga- zine that has a feature section of poetry by Betty Rose King, who has made quite a name for herself as a poet. Home again, we see four of our seniors who have remained rather close to home. Elizabeth Fonville and Kay House are now proud owners of their own little rose-covered cottages. Carolyn Looper and Robert Weather- spoon are teachers at N. C. State College. Carolyn is a teacher of textiles, and Robert is an English professor. We find Bobbie Sue Norwood back at oleā€ Millbrook teaching physical education, and our very much loved advisor, Mrs. Mary S. Johnston, with a new class of seniors. In 1937 the south wings were added. In this building is the auditorium used for all assemblies, band and glee club practice, and all public programs. Seniors recall with pleasure the carefree years spent in the elementary grades. LITCHFORD GYMNASIUM In the fall of 1936 the Litch- ford Gymnasium was added to the campus. It was renovated in the summer of 1956. This gym has been the scene of many conference and intramural events, sock hops, carnivals, and donkey basketball games. Campus Scenes RANDOLPH BENTON VOCATIONAL BUILDING The Ag and Home Ec build- ing, named in honor of the late Superintendent of Wake County Schools, was formally dedicated on Valentine ' s Day in 1947. This building has been used for many educational and social activities including community club meet- ings, teas, receptions, and courses in first aid, home nursing, and shop work for adults, in addition to the regular vocational courses for students. PRIMARY BUILDING In 1954 the Primary Building was completed along with a new cafeteria. Students appreciate the modern and spacious new lunchroom, the scene of Junior- Senior, Athletic and F.F.A.- F. H.A. Banquets as well as bar- becues, dances, and various community affairs. HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING Campus Scenes The Class of ’58 moved into the present high school building during the last few weeks of their freshman year. Finally after three years of studying, much learning, many activities, book losing and little locker slamming, the ’58 ' ers are graduating from this memorable building. THE MILLBROOK QUADRANGLE Through this quadrangle of buildings have passed many friends, never to be forgotten. May the future classes enjoy these buildings as the outgoing seniors have enjoyed them. fv it I •fl ij % BOBBIE SUE NORWOOD STEWART WILSON rmpT ' jm r,v , m ā–  ' iwir ' A 1 mi ' mĀ„ • ' hti ā–  4nbBh ā–  i JW ySHH 1 V lmw. , riMr Wr ... ill mm q . . . . ā–  $$$- •• ' , f v $ • • ' . . . • VV ā€¢ā– ā€˜ā€˜..T ' ā€ž • ā–  :• ā–  ' r ā–  -V ā–  ' ā–  ! v • ' ā– ā–  - ' • • - • H; V r : ā–  Ā . r. •• fc j i MkjfV m pfe ' jfsbllii ?wW I ā–  ā–  ' H ' j, ' • 4Ā£j 4 h V ' ' 4 ; ā–  ' •; BONNIE HARVEY JOHN BRADY ais r v 9 wT rr   — f K , Vi Editor-in-Chief KIT LORTZ Assistant Editor-In-Chief MARGIE HAWKINS Business Manager FAITH DANIELSON Sports Editor JACK GARRETT Sports Editor BOBBIE SUE NORWOOD Art Editor CLIFFORD CHAPPELL Club Editor UN WOOD BARHAM Picture Editor PATRICIA BUTLER Came Came Assistant Business Manager CHARLIE PRITCHARD Typist CAROLYN DEAN Advertising Manager STEWART WILSON Assistant Advertising Manager THOMAS STEVENS Photographer JOE SMITH Photographer SHIRLEY STRICKLAND Beta Club President: KIT LORTZ Vice President: CLIFFORD CHAPPELL Secretary: JOYCE ADAMS Treasurer; BILL PORTER Advisor-. STEWART The purpose of the high school curriculum is to provide experiences that enable students to progress toward the established educational goals of the school. Athletics are a vital part of this objective and for that reason should receive the same recognition and support accorded other school activities. Justification for athletics should be based on the number of participants and the benefits derived by the individual, the school and the community. Sports develop a desire to excel, and offer the physical, moral, and social training that can be equalled in no other activity. The vigorous competition in an athletic contest provides a desirable out- let for excess energy and emotional tensions, possessed by high school students. Such qualities as sportsmanship, sociability, self-control, cooperation, leadership and followership are developed. Our demo- cratic society is based on these qualities. Athletics with their rules and penalties provide a lifelike situation, promote community interest and school morale. A student that is not offered these opportunities certainly is not receiving the well-rounded education necessary to face the challenge and competition in the game of life. The game is played to win, because victory, with honor, should be the goal of every athletic team. There should be no patience with the player who does not hate defeat; but we learn to accept defeat, if we are to be winners in the game of life. COACH C UFT ON MR. WHITE MR. B. F.
