In this book are the cherished memories of our life here at Millbrook High. The dances; the pep rallies; the band rehearsals; the junior and senior plays; that heavenly Junior- Senior Prom and our football, basketball and baseball games are only a few of the activities we will long remember. As we journey down life ' s highway we will realize the importance of the training we have received while in school. The experiments in the lab, those lessons in home ec classes are only a few examples of the training which will prove useful to us as we make a place for ourselves in the world. It is with this idea in mind that we present this annual for your enjoyment and use. (JHillbrook Bigirici Jicljoolg A. E. FUSSELL, PRINCIPAL MILLBROOK. NORTH CAROLINA December 12, 1956 TEMPLE 3-33 84 Dear Students: I am very happy to greet you as the heart of the Millbrook School. lour com- munity is very interested in your health and welfare now and forever. Your school faculty and co-workers are happy to help you grow and develop in one of the best all round schools in this state. An educational program should seek to develop qualities of leadership, courage, enterprise, skill and moral and spiritual values. The Millbrook School program is organized to develop you as good citizens in a democratic society. Where would you have found your friends and experienced any better fellowship and training as you have received in our school? How would you have developed the talents and knowledge without an opportunity to attend a public school system? Where would you have gained the values of team work, individual and group responsibilities, the knowledge to make wise choices? Have you ever thought what you would have been if you had not gone to school? During your school years you have been preparing yourself for the happy days of your life. You will put into practice the preparation that you receive as you grow and develop in a public school in North Carolina. Many of the people with whom you work will be permanent friends to you and to your family throughout your life. Your school friends and teachers will have a tremendous influence on your personality and philosophy. You should be very proud and happy that you have had the opportunity to attend a progressive school system in a cosmopolitan area. You will probably want to continue to appreciate the opportunities that the Millbrook School has presented you. Your school will need your support even after graduation. I have enjoyed working with our students during the past 4 years. You have made a deep impression upon my life. We have all had to work very hard, against obstacles in order to develop our school into the present form. Without your cooperation your principal could not have afforded the leadership necessary to do what has been d one. It is my sincere hope that your school will continue to receive a strong support of the public and that we can accomplish the goals that we have set out to reach in the future. I sincerely hope that you have benefited tremendously from our school pro- gram and that you will share your success with others. I sincerely hope and pray that you will continue to build moral and spiritual values in your life and that you will be an asset to your community and to all of humanity. May God ble3s all of you. A. JS. Fussell Principal DEDICATION With sincere appreciation and deepest gratitude, we, the class, dedicate the 1957 LAUREL to Mr. A. E. Fussell. You have been more than a teacher, Mr. Fussell. You have taught us not only from textbooks but by precept and example. Your Christian character has influenced the students of Millbrook High School to aspire to higher walks of life and greater service. And so, for your personal interest in the students and for your patient guidance as a principal, beloved teacher, and true friend, we dedicate this annual to you. CLASS POEM Once again we ' ve fallen, into footsteps of the past, For now we look back on all the days we knew could never last. All the times we ' ve shared our thoughts and all our many dreams, All the times we got in trouble, from using little schemes. Only make up those many months that we ' ve always held so dear. For we all know that they are gone, with time and another year. Neve r could we forget our friends, although we be apart. For they have crept in a tiny place and are hidden in our hearts. And now we must go on into, the new life that we must find, For never again can we go back to those days we ' ve left behind. For they are locked forever now in the Book of Memories, And we the class of ' 57 are the ones who have the keys. Testator: Penny Norwood Witnesses: Faye Miller Sammie Lee Moore CLASS HISTORY In September 1953, we, the class of 1957, made our first appearance in high school. We were rather shy and quite awed by the upperclassmen. After our first excitement had subsided, we began to get into the swing of high school life, under the watchful eye of Miss Olive. We elected our class officers with Bill Pritchard, President; Homer Lambeth, Vice President; Ralph Johnson, Secretary; Linwood Parrish, Treasurer; and Kathryn Huff, Historian. Many boys and girls went out for the different sports and several earned letters. Those playing were Penny Norwood, Jeanne Fulcher, Mary Lou Ferrell, Faye Miller, Sammie Moore, Suzanne Ne- Smith, Ralph Johnson, Larry Johnson, Johnny Nicholas, Linwood Parrish, and Patsy Eason was the ninth grade cheerleader. The traditional May Day program was held on the football field and the king and queen attendants from the freshman class were Mary Lou Ferrell, Linwood Parrish, Lena Jones, and Johnny Nicholas. The members elected for the student council from the freshman class were Mary Lou Ferrell, Bill Pritchard, Johnny Nicholas, and Mitchie Lorren. On Monday, May 7, the freshman class held its annual class party at Crabtree State Park with the help of its grademothers and Mr. Johnson. Before we knew it, the year was completed and we were then sophomores. We entered this year with a little more confidence, under the leadership of our home room teacher, Mrs. Yelton and our class officers, who were President, Johnny Nicholas; Vice President, Kathryn Huff; Secretary, Jeanne Fulcher; Treasurer, Whitey Wade; Historian, Barbara Bridgers; Parliamentarian, Bill Pritchard; Sergeant- at-Arms; Linwood Parrish; and Reporter, Sammie Moore. Patsy Eason and Dennie Clifton returned to their former schools, and to occupy their places, we found new friends in the personalities of Bob Knipe, Eugene Whitey Wade, Joe Spence, Sally Wood, Frank Stokes, Barbara King, Jeanette Perry. Those who left during the year were Bruce Flanary, Barbara King and Roy Lambeth. The boys and girls who participated in the different sports, again played their sophomore year. Linwood Parrish, Ralph Johnson, Whitey Wade, and Donald Massengill received merit for outstanding work on the baseball team. Johnny Nicholas and Homer Lambeth received recognition for having a safety record as bus drivers, while five of our students received perfect attendance certificates. Homer Lambeth again received fame when he carried his carvings of ancient animals to the State Science Fair in Chapel Hill. On April, the twenty-third, twelve girls were chosen waitresses for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Not only did they serve, but they helped to carry out the Hawaiian theme by dancing the Hulu. Then we realized it, another year had passed. When we entered as Juniors in the fall of ' 55, we were very much aware of the responsibility placed upon our shoulders. There were class rings to be ordered, class play to be given, and numerous activi- ties leading up to the all-important Junior- Senior Banquet at which we were to be hosts. Miss Taylor was our home room teacher and again we got into the swing of school by electing our class officers, who were President, Johnny Nicholas; Vice President, Bill Pritchard; Secretary, Mary Lou Ferrell; Treasurer, Penny Norwood: Historian, Sammie Moore, and Reporter, Jeanne Fulcher. During our Junior year, we were very glad to have Mike Fraiser, Jean Moore, Jim Harvey, Jean Weber, Wilbur Barriman, and Jeannette Cardon join our class, but we regret very much to have Donald Massengill leave at the end of the year. Some of the projects which the Junior Class had to make money was the selling of magazines, socks, and hose. Finally, with magazines selling over, we went to work on our Junior play. To the Juniors, this was one of the most exciting times of the year. The title was MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN, and cast consisted of Mary Lou Ferrell, Sammie Lee Moore, Lena Jones, Faye Miller, Penny Norwood, Jeanne Fulcher, Suzanne NeSmith, Robert Earl Bass, Barbara Bridgers, Whitey Wade, Kathryn Huff, Johnny Nicholas, Linwood Parrish, Billy Pritchard, Donald Massengill, and all the many others who helped to produce the play. Many of the same boys and girls still participated in the sports and the two cheerleaders were Kathryn Huff and Lena Jones. Later in the year, Lena quit cheerleading to become a majorette in the high school band. The gala event of the year was annual Junior-Senior Banquet which took place on the twentieth of April, about 7:30 p. m. The theme was the Mardi Gras and was so well managed and decorated that it was rated as one of the very best, if not the best, ever to be presented in the history of Millbrook High School. During the Junior year, our student council representatives were Ed Orr and Whitey Wade. Ed Orr also represented our class at Boys’ State. Barbara Bridgers, Bill Pritchard, and Kathryn Huff were the marshals for the class the three years in high school according to scholastic averages. Whitey Wade and Suzanne NeSmith won the title of king and queen for the Harvest Festival. To close out the school year, we had a party and picnic at Truby ' s Lake. The play, banquet, and all of the many parties made our Junior year, a year we will never forget. Seniors! How marvelous the sound of the word ! Aside from the fact that we held the name and had the usual privilege of front seat in assembly, somehow, we didn ' t feel too different. However, our class- mates held all of the high offices in school. Bill Pritchard was elected President of the Student Council, Kathryn Huff was elected President of the Beta Club, Linwood Parrish was elected President of the Mono- gram Club, Lena Jones, President of the F. H.A. , Penny Norwood, President of Glee Club, Whitey Wade, President of the French Club, and the Senior Class officers were as follows: Johnny Nicholas, President; Suzanne NeSmith, Vice President; Mary Lou Ferrell, Secretary; Ed Orr, Reporter; and Kathryn Huff, His- torian. This was Millbrook ' s first successful football season and those on the team from our class were Linwood Parrish, Captain; Bill Pritchard, Co-Captain; Donald Pate, Ralph Johnson, Larry Johnson, Jim Harvey, Tommy Wilson, Whitey Wade, and Johnny Nicholas. As usual, we had the annual Homecoming with Mary Lou Ferrell reigning as Queen with Suzanne NeSmith as one of her attendants. For the first time, a Senior Bowl Football game was held and the boys participating were: Jim Harvey, Whitey Wade, Linwood Parrish, Ralph Johnson, Larry Johnson, Johnny Nicholas, and the Senior Cheerleader was Kathryn Huff. Again the Senior class won the Harvest Festival Contest with Kathryn Huff as Queen and Robert Earl Bass as King. All of these things happened so fast that we sometimes thought of pinching ourselves to be sure that they were real. Some of the other things which stand out in our minds are the Senior play, Junior- Senior Banquet, and the trip to New York. They are times that will be long remembered. Now we see ourselves walking down the aisle one last time to receive that one small piece of paper, and to us, it represents not just a time but a place. Hard work has gone into making that piece of paper, happy times and much despair and many disappointments. We would like to thank our Senior Home Room Advisor, Miss Stevens, our Grademothers, friends, teachers, and principal, who have helped guide and direct us along the way. It is with deep fondness that we say, It ' s a great school, it ' s a wonderful school, it ' s our school. Kathryn Huff Historian CLASS PROPHECY Though coach Whitey Wade has a steady eye, One thing will distract his attention Just you let a certain young lady stroll by, Or a name like Suzanne NeSmith be mentioned. Jim Harvey kissed all the babies; Won the election; got to be Mayor of our little city. He ' ll be governor; wait and see. Bless my soul. There ' s Mary Lou Ferrell Cutting capers on broadway; Signing contracts by the dozen, She ' s a star that ' s come to stay. Train dispatcher in Grand Central, Carl Rochelle ' s booming voice is heard. Blasts your ear drums; but the catch is; You can ' t understand a word. ' Mongst files and typing; books and ledgers; Faye Miller’s never at a mental loss; Most efficient in an office. (And she weds that bald-headed boss). We find Henry Jessup, and Tommy Wilson In their new ESSO ' s Where oiling and greasing is their work, On Raleigh’s best Auto ' s. Our big business women; Have gone a long way, Barbara Bridgers, Juanita Carlton and Jeanette Cardon are secretaries to stay. Penny Norwood and Kathryn Huff, Are Laboratory Technicians to stay This work never ends for them, They slave both night and day. At home we find our three new wives, Mitchie Lorren, Jean Moore and Sally Wood. There they ' ll slave the rest of their lives, Trying to please husbands, as if they could. Johnny Nicholas is now our President Sitting in the big White House. He had to prove to all the boys. That ' s he ' s a man and not a mouse. Roger Allen has reached his quota Working now for General Motors. He drives a big bad Cadillac, Loaded with money by the stack. Artist Homer Lambeth paints strange pictures; Masterpieces by the score; While a dozen luscious models Wait outside the studio door. Chef in Big Heart Break Hotel; Robert Norton is doing well; He can make hash in just three minutes. But Heaven only knows what ' s in it. Notice our friend Billie Lou Dunn, Teacher in a Sunday School; Busy making saints of sinners; Laying down the Golden Rule. She can cure your chills and fever That is Doctor Lena Jones’s boast. Which is worse, the ills or treatment? That ' s what puzzles us the most. Husky Larry Johnson rolls in wealth; Teaching course based on health. Of vim and vigor” he has a load; Step aside, he may explode. Solemn undertaker Donald Pate Chuckles when you sneeze or cough; Hoping some bewhiskered microbe Soon will cause you to pop off. Someone should shoot uncle Eddie Orr Growling on the radio; Scaring tots with nightmare horrors As, shivering, off the bed they go. Fifty miles from the nearest neighbor, Jimmy Forest sits; As fire warden in a tower; People near him give him fits. Beatrice Barrow is a nurse of the navy; Where she waits on soldiers galore. Here she hopes to find her man. And she has her pick of over a score. One of our girls is with the state now, Where she has well made her place. As typist and filing clerk. We find Frances Norton ' s smiling face. For his speed at battle General Linwood Parrish has at last hit the top. He ' s better known now, As Johnny on the spot. Bill Pritchard is found in his big firm Working in the engineering field. Sitting at the president ' s desk. Where bossing is his skill. Ralph Johnson is now on a Hospital Staff, Where wooing girls is his best craft. He spends his time flirting with nurses, And taking dead bodies off the hearses. Robert Bass ' s co-operation Is a big success in the motor line His sufficient secretary, Jeanne Fulcher is doing fine. Playing the organ is Sammie Moore ' s delight As she plays in Carnegie Hall. And when it comes to playing her jazz. She ' s always the bell of the ball. Hat designer in the city; Shirley Drake ' s mind runs a riot; No one should make hats of spinach-- But watch our little Shirley try it ! Jean Weber is now perfecting Home canning in a better way. Is it that it was her house, That blew up the other day? m WAS YOUf JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS President ------ - - - - STEWART WILSON Treasurer- - ■ CAROLYN DEAN Vice President - - - - - KIT LORTZ Historian - - TOMMY BUCHANNAN Secretary ------ PATRICIA BUTLER Reporter - - - JACK GARRETT JOYCE ADAMS ELAINE ALLEN ALEXANDER AVERETTE LIN WOOD BARHAM CLARA BENTON DANNY BOYKIN TOMMY BUCHANAN PATRICIA BUTLER SANDRA BUNN DORIS BURNETTE IMOGEN E CARTER CLIFFORD CHAPPELL FAITH DANIELSON ERIC DAVIS CAROLYN DEAN JESSIE DYER ELIZABETH FONVILLE JEANNETTA FULLER JACK GARRET MARGIE HAWKINS DELORES HORTON KAY HOUSE CAROLYN HUNT BETTY ROSE KING CAROLYN LOOPER KIT LORTZ JUDY MATTHEWS JOYCE MEARES EVERETTE NEWTON LEATHA NIPPER BOBBIE SUE NORWOOD BUDDY POOLE CHARLES PRITCHARD MARION QUESSEN BERRY JIMMY SMITH JOE SMITH WHITT STALLINGS THOMAS STEVENS JO ANNE STIMPSON SHIRLEY STRICKLAND THOMAS TURNER GEORGE WALTERS ROBERT WEATHERSPOON STEWART WILSON HENRY YOUNG 1. I truly believe that athletics have a big part in making a suc- cessful school, and programs for athletics develop things nec- essary for a good student body as well as for athletes. It is not hard to be an athlete, for there are many people with athletic ability; however, with skill, other personal qual- ities are needed. Through participation in athletics you may learn the true meanings of co-ordination, co-operation, sportsmanship and confidence. Participating in sports helps people gain skills and tech- niques which they will use in later life. A sound athletic program is part of a full high school life and has become one of the main cornerstones and symbols of high school activities. It channels energies that have to be released, it builds a person physically, teaches confidence, co-ordination, teamwork, and its games are a common way to arouse the loyalties of students, faculty, and Alumni. Athletics teach us to lead and follow wisely; and to direct our own lives with expertness, purpose, and decency. Through athletics we get technical, intellectual training, and ethical guidance to prepare us better for the world of tomorrow.
