As we see our graduation slowly coming into view, we pause for just a few moments to let the treasured memories of our Alma Mater pass before our eyes. Our goal has not been an easy one to reach. HUNT ED GRICE Y Dear Students: Please permit your principal to greet you as the most important part in the Millbrook School. Your school faculty and personnel will endeavor to befriend you, seeking to bring out the best in you and offering you an opportunity to grow and develop in every worthwhile respect. Every community needs outstanding leaders if it is to be the type of community in which we wish to live. Leadership requires enterprise, courage, vigor and preparedness. Leadership requires a program and a purpose. An education develops such qualities. Have you ever thought what life would be like if you had not gone to school? Where would you have found your friends and learned how to get along with other people? I-low would you have gained the knowledge and skill that you already have? Where would you have gained the values of co-operation, assume responsibility, practicing real true democracy, of making wise choices? Your school years should be the happiest ones of your life. In your school you meet and are associated with fine young boys and girls of your own age and with common interests. Many of the people with whom you work and play will be your friends during your entire life. Many of your teachers will have a tremendous influence upon your life after you complete your high school education. You should be very proud that you have had the opportunity to attend a growing school in a cosmopolitan area. You will want to continue to contribute to the growth and development of better public schools in our great state, but more especially you will want to contribute to your local school program. Ihave had a great deal of personal and professional pleasure in working with you in attempt- ing to help you prepare yourself for present day living as well as for future living. I sincerely hope and pray that you continue to grow in building into your life moral and spiritual values that will be a blessing to our community and to humanity. lt is my hope that our school supported by the public, can accomplish the goals that we have set out to reach in the future. I sincerely hope that you have benefited from our school program and that you will share your success with others. May God bless you eternally. r 'ww Mn Wm.. q W w,, l , Z 3 Q 5 S EX X H- Q N Wg? CLASS POEM By Donald Johnson Years have come and years have gone And here we are at last, To an end of school and memories which linger in the past. And it seems just yesterday With our minds on open range, We first gazed into a classroom With its new and its strange. But not waiting nor repeating Time kept its steady pace, The years did pass as we progressed And high school was to face. The months passed on so rapidly As we worked and learned and strived, And our reward, a foundation of learning- We hold with greatest pride. And as we go further along For this is just our start, May we go with good intention And peace of mind and heart, May God grant us each wisdom and health And talent to meet life's task, And may vision, determination, ambition, and courage Direct us. For this we ask. May we always remember the things we've learned And use them to further advance, And may we never forget our social relations As our new societies commence. Opportunity is everlasting The world is ours for the asking. if 'All Rite Now' Mabell Ah Young Love S b fv ya f' Aa' 7y, ' :., M . gt x' M i f Z. szmoks w 'ZX k' B' 7' xx . f, 13 + wif 1 Q Y ' 5 f VL Q' I f v W - -'v' , . Z 4 Tffcbtozq As the final door is about to close on the school career of the class of 1956, let us again bring some of our most precious memories to mind. We shall begin with the late summer of 1952 when forty-four green freshmen entered the home room of Miss Olive. There we opened the first door to our high school career. Some of us opened this door with eagerness, gladness, and with suspicion, but through the patience and guidance of our teachers, we all managed to secure entrance. We were very happy that year to have Harvey Crabtree, Branson Meachum, Shirley Phillips and Betty Stokes join our class. We were just as sad to lose Shirley Martin, Elma Giddens, Donald Hewitt, Sonja Whit- worth, Mary Linda Brummitt, Jean Ford, Shirley Phillips, Betty Stokes, Gail Shearin, Eliza- beth Clifton, and Shirley Freeman to various places. Some of our activities for this year con- sisted of a Christmas party and a weiner roast at the end of the year. So the door closed on our first experience in high school. The next September, with the aid of Mrs. Lois Yelton, we opened the second door. The activities we enjoyed that year were a Christmas party held at Wilder's Grove Club House, a going away party for two of our fellow classmates, and a weiner roast at the end of the year. We were happy to find four new faces among us that year. They were Joe Frye, Danny Rogers, Doris Horton, and Ioan Ketner. We were also happy to have Shirley Freeman rejoin our class. Our hearts were saddened by the loss of our classmates Shirley Drake, Ronald Nichols, Doris Horton, and Frances Carter. We also lost three of our boys to 'Uncle Sam's Navy. They were Branson Meachum, Joe Frye, and Joe Dunn. Time must go on so we continued with our studies and fun to complete our Sophomore year. The third door of our school life was opened with a bang. We were now known as the Jolly Juniors and we surely lived up to the name. As we entered the room, we found Miss Doris Stevens, our home room teacher. It was through her patience and direction that we were able to present the hit comedy Just Ducky. We will long remember the laughs we received from its performance. The next big eve nt of this year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. For this one big night, it seemed as though we had by some magic wand traveled to the beauti- ful island of Hawaii. This year we gained several new classmates. Betty Looper and William Wood joined us from another school. Carol Looper and Leona Crutchfield decided to leave their housework long enough to continue their education. This year we also welcomed Faye Ray from Wake Forest in exchange for Gertie Bailey and Betty Jo Carter. Then at the end of the year Leona Crutchfield and William Wood decided to leave us again. Our annual Christ- mas party for this year was held at Mrs. Kirkman's home. It seemed to have been enjoyed by everyone. To close out the school year, we had a swimming party and a picnic at Beacon Lake. The play, banquet, and parties made this a very joyous year for everyone. Now as we have entered our fourth and final door at Millbrook, we find Miss Stevens is again our home room teacher. We know that through her guidance this final year will be a successful one. In September our class rings arrived, but to our disappointment they were of the wrong pattern. We reordered, and in about six weeks the other pattern arrived. This year Faye Ray decided to return to Wake Forest and Shirley Freeman again moved to Pittsboro. Marjorie Cardon came to us from Cary High. We find this year is one of hard work. Some of our big tasks for this year are the publication of The Laurel, working and planning toward a trip to New York, the presentation of the Senior Play, entitled 'Tumblin' Creek, and the graduation exercises. As this fourth door is gradually coming to a close, our hearts are saddened at the thought of leaving Millbrook and our many friends, but in our hearts lie memories that will last forever. ' SJR? !'fLT.?f?.fiEf- O 79 On my way to work as a secretary for the governor, I stopped by my uncle's mountain shack to get a little swig befme beginning my day's work, Guess what I saw as I looked into the crystal cleamess of the Apple Cider Jug, nothing but Steve Barnes at his Open-Air Chicken Farm with Betty Jane Van Mater as the prettiest chick on the farm, As we look deeper into the crystal cleamess of the cider jug, we see Marsha Evans and Betty Looper teaching at Edwards Military Institute, Any particular reason, Girls!! Edith Barker now manages her own little dress shop, On her afternoons off, she shops for her wedding trousseau, When Jerry Ferguson enters his office where he practices law, he greets his effi- cient secretary, Kaye Dillard with a cheerful 'Good morning,' Now we see the courageous boys from Millbrook, Jimmy Davis and Danny Rogers defending their country with such pretty nurses as Srirley Lloyd and Betty Ruth Usher to look after them, In the Broadway lights of New York we see our own Billy Martin who is now a top TV producer, Ahhhhl Is that Peggy Cooley we see accepting the award as 'Mother of the Year' for 1965, and is that Kathleen Turner as her greatest competitor? Wait! I believe I see Marjorie Cardon buying a ticket on Edd Iohnson's powerful new streamliner, Could it be she is visiting her sweetheart at Fort Iacksonlr As we look across the beautiful Wheat and Tobacco Fields of North Carolina, we think of no one but our own Frank Quessenberry, Carl Ferguson and Gilbert Young who have contributed so much to the progress of agriculture, As an efficient secretary in the Engineering Department of State College, we see Betty Richardson with Donald Johnson as her employer, Who is that we see spinning around the block in a long gold Cadillac? Why, it's Georgia White, the wife of one of Raleigh's most prominent businessmen, As we gaze further into the clearness of the Cider jug we see Walter Haskins crowned Mr, Universe for 1970. There's Jimmy Kirkman in his beautiful new yacht beneath the Glendocks Bridge which was constructed and engineered by Clarence Bowles and Bunny Sorrell, Who is the rising new star with the golden voice in Metropolitan Opera? Could it be Nancy Newton with her accompanist, Joan Ketnet? Let us peep into the postoffice of Raleigh, N, C, where we see Harvey Crabtree as General Postmaster, As one of our leading career girls, we see Peggy Jean Norwood as a teletypsetter for a leading New Ycrk paper, She is working for the Editor's position, As I prepare to leave my Uncle's shack I take one last look into the Cider jug and what should I see but Shirley Bartholomew at the Friendly Garage as a secretary for Brutx Rogers and Allen Goodwin, who are the proprietors, FAYE LAMBETH, Prophet .Zur Wdlmd We,the senior class of Millbrook High School, being of sound mind, we hope, do hereby bequeath the following to those remaining at our Alma Mater. The physical strain that an athlete goes through night after night, day after day builds his strength and character. An athlete gives his time in getting his knowledge of sports. He thus gives an example of his skill in any athletic exercise. When he plays a sport he is rendering a personal service to his school whether he wins or not. To play a sport or participate in any form of athletics you have to be in shape, This is one of the better reasons for having a well-rounded athletic program at every school. Competition is the greatest test of any kind to see just how much a person can do, His control of temper has a lot to do with his ability, An outburst of anger can have him put out of the contest by the referee or replaced by a substitute, When he can control this he is placed physically and mentally over his opponent, Athletics have done a lot for him as he fights hard for superior teams in his school Maybe that day will come and maybe never, but he is now prepared to meet any obligationtthat may fall his way. Left to right: Peggy Jean Norwood, Judy Matthews, Shirley Freeman, Joan Ketner, Head Cheerleader, Kathryn Huff, Betty Ruth Usher, The purpose of the cheerleaders is to create a love of sports, to foster the ideals of sportsmanship, and to promote school spirit among themselves, the teams, and the student body, With this purpose in mind they have been adding much spirit and moral support to the school and teams, They have fulfilled this purpose with their ever- present vim, vigor, and vitality, We are very proud of our cheerleaders for supporting our teams in times of defeat as well as times of victory, They are doing a great job in keeping the morale and school spirit of the alumni and student body at an ever-increasing high, igyowyw 777a.2eTU qfwwe swd T e r r i b T w o s o 1 m e e Snake Hips Qi , V, I ,,-- f Crazy Legs C 1 ez ' J 3 ZZ?
