MRS. MARY S. JOHNSTON J t z With graduation just around the corner we, the senior class of 1954, as one of our last acts at dear old Millbrook, present the fifth volume of the Laurel. As our high school career daily hastens to an end, we think of the many treasured memories formed at our Alma Mater. One that will forever linger is our school song with its challenging words. In this yearbook the staff has endeavored to blend together our song and a record of our school activities according to this Table of Contents DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES FEATURES ATHLETICS GRADES ADVERTISEMENTS W VW editor-in-chief VMHM To Mrs. Mary Sears Johnston, who, during our junior and senior years, has set before us ideals far too high for us to reach, yet has never tired of encouraging us to keep trying; who has herself set an example of the best in scholarship, in culture, and in Christian love and patience, we, the class of 1954, lovingly dedicate this edition of The Laurel. A . , ,. . ....-.7.....,.. .uw.wmm Greetings : I am happy to greet you who are a part of the Millbrook School. In your school, you have an ever-present friend, an unlimited opportunity to prove your worth, and a splendid chance to grow and develop physically7 mentally and morally. Your school teachers7 your school administrator, and your local school committee are all vitally interested in your welfare here in school and your life after you have received formal instruction. It is our hope that you will carry with you, moral and spiritual values that will enable you to take your place in society as a good citizen. The Millbrook School tradition should be that of good citizenship. You know very well that your school strives for good citizenship and it is a valuable asset to any school and community. What could be more important? You have had the opportunity to attend a good school that has a well organized program. We will want you to continue to contribute to the growth and development of one of the better schools in North Carolina. It is my hope that our school, led by a forceful and progressive student body, can reach even greater heights in the years to come. May God bless you. A. E. ROBERT YOUNG CLASS POEM Once again the shades of sadness Have fallen on the paths we tread. The evening sun has melted fast. But brighter roads are still ahead. ,Tis true, that destiny strikes again The links of joy as melting lead. But untouched menfries linger on. For brighter roads are still ahead. All time and space and things to come. In words to be written or said, Can ne,er loose our hearts strings here On the brighter roads still up ahead. God speed you in world success A11 hopeful treasures richly bred. Seek nothing but the very best On the brighter roads still up ahead. To most people, the begin- ning of a task is the most difficult and to us the four years which lay ahead looked very dim indeed. As the year advanced, we became interested in our new adventure and came to enjoy the year to- gether. We gained two new personalities in the per- sons of GERALDINE FREEMAN from Georgia and IRENE WRIGHT from Rolesville. Regretfully, we lost several of our original classmates. Those who left our class were: ROBERT BOYETTE, LIBBY BRIDGES, FRANCES CLIFTON, BOBBY DEAN, BILLIE MAE JONES, BOBBY NICHOLS, DORO- THY NORWOOD, MARY JO POOLE, HARVEY WEATHERS, and HAZEL WILMOUTH. We also had a great deal of fun along with our work. Our social event of the year was a class picnic in April at Greshamis Lake. Our second step on the ladder was our Sopho- more year. By now we were accustomed to high school and looked forward to a year of great events and expectations. With MRS. YELTON as our homeroom teacher, we had a year of great hap- penings. As Sophomores, we realized the necessity of work and settled down to becoming good stu- dents. We also had many new friends join our class. They were: ODELL and ROY CODY from Brevard, JAMES DENNING from Hugh Morson, MARY LOU EARLEY from Colerain High, DELORES POOLE from Hugh Morson, MARIE STONE from Angier, BILL STOFFREGEN from Needham Broughton, DAN VAN MATER from Cary and SHIRLEY WILLIFORD from Knightdale. We lost several of our classmates. Those who left were: RUTH PACE and JANE PUGH who left us to be married and MARIE STONE and FRANKLIN I W :7 ' 'va w' ,. J 1., E a 5,.Jan A l t...'....-a t WILLIAMS who left to continue their education elsewhere. At last our turn came to step on the third rung of the ladder, our Junior year. Our class was very large and therefore, we had two wonderful home- room teachers, MISS STEVENS and MR. JOHN- SON. Without their assistance, the year wouldnit have been as prosperous as it was for us. Again we gained new classmates. Among them were: RONNY STALLINGS from Edward Best High, REX GIRTON and BILLY MITCHELL from Hugh Morson, PAUL CHAMBLEE Broughton and JOSEPH LAMBETH from Fayette- ville. On the darker side of the news we lost others from our class. They were: AUDREY MATHENY, PAUL CHAMBLEE, ELSIE STELL, J. T. BAR- HAM, ARTHUR GENE LOWERY, JAMES DEN- NING and PEGGY STEWART and KATHERINE RANDALL to the Senior class. The outstanding events of the year were the Junior-Senior Banquet from Needham and the Junior play entitled, Lefs F ace It. Now we are on the final rung of the ladder, our Senior year of high school. We are looking forward to receiving our diplomas in May but with regrets. This year has been enjoyable to us but we have had to work to maintain our scholastic standings. t We have our memories of Millbrook to keep with us always. We have gained two new friends this year. They are: BOBBY GOUGE from Garner and PEGGY MISSKELLEY from the Junior class. We lost one classmate, FRANK RICHARDSON. Our greatest feat has been the publication of The Laurel. May we never forget our socials of the year, a Christmas and Valentine party in the recreation room. As we draw near our finals of our four years, we have memories that time will not erase. BOBBY WIGGS H istorian PM As I look into the future as far as human eyes can see, I see the Millbrook Class of ,54 scattered over the United States. There are two of our seniors who have settled in the Western part of the country. DORIS NOR- WOOD has settled in Montana with her husband, R. L. Bailey, and SIDNEY CATLETT is now a prosperous Texas rancher. BOBBY COUGE has ventured to New York where he is a well known psychiatrist. Several good athletes in our class are playing professionally. FELIX BARLOWE and BUZZY ANTHONY are playing for the Celtics while BOBBY WILLIAMS is quarterback for the Wash- ington Redskins. CHARLES MOORE is now living in Florida where he is a railroad engineer. Out of our class we have one who is a professor. PAT DUNN is professor of Physical Education at Wake F orest College. EARL NICHOLS is still in Raleigh where he is president of Nichols Motor Company, our local ' Chevrolet dealer. I see our class president, JIMMY WILDER, as a great civil engineer. I don,t think I am mistaken when I see SAM TOWNSEND as one of Raleigh,s leading attorneys with none other than PEARL LLOYD as his private secretary. I As I look south again I see our, own RONNY STALLINCS as a civil engineer in Atlanta, Georgia. Neither am I mistaken when I; see our own MICHAEL O,HARA well on his way to being another Jack Benny. Also there is BILLY MIT- CHELL, a singer on Michaer TV show, talking to DARRELL GLASGOW, who is the announcer. As I look into the colleges I see BOBBY WIGGS studying to be an interpreter with the hopes of going to Rome. As I look back on our home town, I see MARY LOU EARLEY as a secretary, who is happily mar- ried to R. T. Bovkin. While we are still in Raleigh, I see WILLARD BARKER, DWIGHT PARTIN, REX GIRTON, and ROBERT YOUNG, who are working for Southern Bell, talking to JERRY MOORE about his plans for enlarging his Esso station. One of our boys is in a snowy white uniform for Uncle Sam. Yes, HOWARD HAITHCOCK is in the Navy. I see BILL STOFFREGEN studying forestry at State and BOBBY WALTERS studying automotive engineering. Another of our boys has settled close to Raleigh also, DAN VAN MATER has bought a large farm and is now raising registered Jerseys. CARL BELCH hasn,t ventured far from home either. He has taken over his fathers fish business. Raleigh also has a new toy store with AGNES TURNER as manager and GERALDINE FREE- MAN as secretary. We are just in time for a nice little chase, while JIMMY AVERETT, our state highway patrolman, goes after JOSEPH LAM'BETH, our Trailways bus driver. I see SHIRLEY POOLE, our telephone operator, getting off duty at Southern Bell and DELORES POOLE, our happy housewife, discussing our high school days. Two of our girls are still together even after high school days. PEGGY JESSUP and IRENE WRIGHT are living together, but not for much longer, for 'I see a couple of bridal gowns in the closet. DONALD NICHOLS will be getting a chance to use his French since he is now associated with the Diplomatic Service in France: I certainly can,t overlook the CODY brothers. ROY is owner of Cody,s Drive-In and ODELL is manager. This concludes the prophecy of our dear old class of ,54, and I am sure it will be a very pros- perous class.
