Fii- GS Do Not Remove from the Library )on , z- Published by the Senior Class of MILLBORO HIGH SCHOOL Milib oro, Virginia FOREWORD What have you here? It is The Spur , our way to school and to bring to you the memories of the year 1960-61. We hope that this book will enable you to relive the year through the pages that follow. We hope that it will constantly keep you in touch with those you grew to love, with the activities which helped you to grow, with the teachers and classes which helped you to learn, and with the entire school where you learned to blend all phases of life into one whole. Since Millboro was organized as a standard high school in 1916, when the old building was erected and equipped, progress has been steady. The new building and heating plant was con- structed in 1933. Four new departments have been added since the organization: Vocational Agriculture, Home Economics, Business Edu- cation, and Music. In the fall of this year our enrollment was increased by the addition of the Juniors and Seniors from Goshen High School in Rockbridge County. Plans are now being com- pleted for an addition to the present builjiing. CONTENTS Administration Faculty Classes Activities Elementary Advertisements DEDICATION As we look back through the years, it is our parents who always form the background, the foundation for our growth. They are the ones who guided our first steps, who started us out on the first day of school, who bandaged our cuts and bruises and listened with patience to our tales of woe. Our parents are the ones who have made innumerable sacrifices for us; they are the ones who helped us over obstacles, and it is they who comforted us when our little worlds turned upside down. Therefore, in recognition and appreciation of their untiring, unending devotion, service and love, we dedicate this our 1961 ’’Spur” to our best friends . . . OUR PARENTS. On September 7, 1949, 37 eager Little boys and girls entered the first grade. Miss Haynes, taking the problem in hand got us on the path to the goal of a senior. All of our grade teachers. Miss Harouff, Mrs. McLaughlin, Mrs. Blanchard, Mrs. Schoonover, Mrs. McCray, Mrs. Tyree and Mrs. Hupman, we would like to thank for having patience and love for us. The two features that stand out in our minds are the decora- tions we put up in our rooms, and our trips to the historical sights and non historical sights. These we will add to our lists of memories. The door to high school was then opened to us. My, the acti- vities we became a part of. In the eighth, ninth, and tenth grades our highlights included dances and parties. Our sponsors these years were; eighth grade, Mr. Hileman; ninth grade, Mrs. Mary Skinner; tenth grade, Mrs. Mary Cauley. In the eleventh grade we sponsored the more special events. The year began with our Junior Play, Dear Ruth . We sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom of 1960, which was very beautiful. On April 25, 1960 we received our class rings. This was certainly a red letter day in our lives. We would like to say a special thanks to Mr. Ellis, our class sponsor, for making this a wonderful year. And now we are seniors, that long strived for goal. As twenty .of us stepped into the Senior room that first morning, greeted by our sponsor, we knew this was it. We were joined by seven seniors from Goshen High and one from Clifton Forge High. For a brief moment on the day we took our cap and gown pic- tures, the class could picture themselves as on graduation day. There are many decisions we must make during the year. Selecting the annual cover, our motto and many more are ours to make. We thank Mr. Skinner for advising us in making these de- cisions. The time has been so very short but wonderful. We will be saying good-bye to our classmates before very long. There will be the time to say good-bye to our school, M.H.S., the home of the ’ ' Wildcats . May that spirit never die in us, and when we hear the song, TisDear Old Millboro , be proud to say that is my school song. 15 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of 1961 of MillboroHigh School, do hereby make and declare this to be pur last will and testament, in form and manner as follows: Elizabeth Angus-I will my seat in the Senior room to Jeanette Angus.
