reference ONLY GS Do Not Remove from the Library 960 MILLBORO HIGH SCHOOL Millboro, Virginia FOREWORD As you, the Millboro students, turn the pages of the I960 Spur, you will recall many memories of your school days and the activities of Millboro High. May these memories remain with us as the years go by and may we always remember and appreciate the efforts of the teachers who have so patiently helped us. Since Millboro was organized as a standard high school in I 9 I 6 , when the old building was erected and equipped, pro- gress has been steady. In 1918 the school was accredited by the State Board of Education. The new building and heat- ing plant were constructed in 1933. Four new departments have been added since the organization; Vocational Agri- culture, Home Economics, Business Education, and Music. Later a community cannery was put in operation. Plans are now being completed for an addition or a new building to the present plant. Millboro has sent out nearly 600 graduates during the forty- three years of its history. 3 As a token of our esteem, we dedicate the I960 edition of the Annual to Mrs. Mary Cauley, who, through patience, devotion, and guidance; helped us to reach the goal for which we have so long aspired. She has shown lasting enthusiasm in the activities of our school and has supported it faithfully. Adjusting to school life is sometimes a hard task, but we immediately began our work with seriousness. Mr. George Bagby was our principal. We were honored to have a part in the lovely May Court in the spring of 1949. More sure of ourselves and wiser in the ways of education, we proceeded through the next three years with greater ease than our first year. Our teachers were: Miss Harouff, Mrs. McLaughlin, and Mrs. Blanchard, respect- ively. Mr. Grant Rush succeeded Mr. Bagby as principal du ring our fourth year. Summer vacation was now beginning to have significance. When it was over, we trooped back to school and to the fifth grade. Our class was divided for the next three years, but still we managed to take field trips together. These included trips to Natural Bridge, Monticello, and Colonial Williamsburg. Our teachers were: Fifth grade- Mrs. McCray and Mrs. Deeds; sixth grade- Mrs. McCray and Mrs. Tyree; and seventh grade- Mrs. Tyree and Mrs. Hupman. Mr. Fred Knoblock succeeded Mr. Rush as principal. Our dream of becoming eighth graders and a taste of high school became a reality in Sep- tember of 1955. My, but we were mischievous! We often wonder how our teachers survived. Theywere: Mrs. Cauley-home room, Mr. Kno- block, Mr. Cleveland, Mrs. Skinner, Mrs. Mull- is, and Mr. Joyce. Mrs. Cauley, and Mrs. Skinner have remained to see us graduate. High school at last! We ente red the ninth grade more mature and realizing that our goal was nearer. This year we sponsored a Fresh- man Frolic which was a tremendous success. Mr. John B. Farrar became our principal and Mr. Hileman joined us as social studies teacher. We were reaching our goal slowly but surely as we entered the tenth grade with Mrs. Cauley as home room teacher. As a financial project we sponsored a Homecoming Queen for the first time. Mr. Robert Sauter joined the teaching staff as coach and social studies teach- er. Mr. Richard Catron served as our new Agriculture Instructor. Our class officers were: President- Kay Coffey, Vice-President- Buddy Wade, Secretary- Tommy Simmons, and Treasurer- Neal Whitson. One step closer, we entered the llthgrade with Mr . Gordon Ellis as our home room teach- er. We were realizing that school was a com- bination of work and some play. We presented our Junior play, Arsenic and Old Lace which was hailed by all. New teachers were Mr. Ellis, who taught English, and Mr. Thomas Capley who taught social studies and coached. They have remained to see us graduate. Class offi- cers were: President- Tommy Simmons, Vice- President- Buddy Wade, Secretary- Kay Coffey, Treasurer- Margaret Nicely, and Reporter- Tommy Porter. The dream we had cherished for twelve years became a reality when on August 31, 1959 we began our final year. Twenty-three seniors, eleven girls and twelve boys, entered Mr. Skinner ' s twelfth grade room for our senior year, Mr. Ernest Worrell of Madison succeeded Mr. Farrar as principal. Our senior year has been highlighted by many events. We attended the University of Virginia-Clemsonfootball game at Charlottes- ville. Our Christmas Ball in December was a tremendous success. Now we are looking for- ward to presenting our senior play and later on the capping of all senior activities, the Junior- Senior Prom. Class officers are President- Buddy Wade, Vice-President- Gerald Clark, Secretary- Margaret Nicely, Treasurer- Jane Bogan, and Reporter- Charles Pritt. Throughout our high school career we have been proud of the individuals in our class who have done outstanding work. Several girls and boys have participated in varsity basketball and six boys have starred on the baseball diamond. We are indeed proud that six members of our graduating class have been in the Beta Club for 3 years. Tommy Simmons served as President of the Rockbridge Federation of Beta Clubs in his senior year. He also was elected president of the newly organized S.C.A. Joan Bright was vice-president of the Skyline Federation pf, the F.H.A. Clubs during her final year. We are grateful to the individuals and groups who have made our twelve years here at Millboro succes ul and happy. We shall always remember their kind efforts. We go ojit into the world somewhat more mature and ready to take our plac with others who have passed through th haals of Millboro. Our future is ahead; we- shall make it success- ful. 18 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of I960 of Millboro High School, do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament, in form and manner as follows: Karen Anderson - I will my basketball uniform to Janet Hodge, and my size to Carolyn Ail stock. Joan Bright - I will my size to Janet Hodge, Jane Bogan - I will my rabbits to Mr. Ellis. Kay Coffey - I will my love of English to anyone at Millboro High School who has difficulty with it, and my theatrical experience to the next Drama Club president. Jean Coursey - I will everything I have left to Janet Hodge, except Paul. Linda Hevener - I will my shortness to Carolyn Burns. Mildred Neff - I will my position on the basketball team to Katie Ford, hoping she won ' t be as clumsy as I. Margaret Nicely - I will my position in the Beta Club to Richard providing he makes the grade. Evelyn Reynolds - I will my ability not to fuss to Roxie Nicely. Ruby Riley - I will my chair in the senior class to Jackie providing he makes the grade, Phyllis Whitson - I will my English book to Curtis Nelson. Gerald Clark - I will my position in the senior class to Linda Beck providing she makes good use of it. Billy Deitz - I will my half day leave to Bobby Sams providing that he gets to use it. Conway Howell - I will to Linda Tennant my noise so that she may pester more teachers in class and make more noise at ball games, Alvin Law - I will my books to any junior who wants them, providing I don ' t need them next year, hoping they will get more out of them than I did.
