It seems such a short time since forty of us journeyed to school for the first time. It was September 1947, that we were seated in the first grade by Miss Ada Haynes. But, before we go further let ' s stopandsay ' thanks ' to the follow- ing teachers who so faithfully kept pushing us upward through the grades andfor seeing that we would reach high school: Miss Ada Haynes, Miss Jessie Harouff, Mrs. Thelma McLaughlin, Mrs. Mildred Blanchard, Mrs. Ethel Frances Moore, Mrs. Marian McCray, Mrs. Virginia Deeds, Mrs. Elsie Tyree, Mrs. Marie Zimmerman and Mrs. Alice Hup - man. Werecallsome of the exciting things that happened while we were in the grades such as our trip to Natural Bridge when we were in the sixth grade and to the Massanutten Caverns while in the seventh grade. On September 1, 1954 we entered the eighth grade with Mrs. Mary Cauley as home- room teacher. Our teachers were: Miss Vida Fairchild- English; Mrs. Mary Cauley- mathematics; Mr. PaulSchoonover-civics; Mrs. Mary Mullis-science and home econom- ics; Mr. Joe Joyce-agriculture. Class officers were as follows: President: Paul Mines; Vice President: Jimmy Black; Secretary: Jerry Brinkley; Treasurer: Wilson Neff. On September 7, 1955 we began our Freshman year with Mrs. Mary E. Skinner as homeroom teacher. Our teachers were: Mr. M. P. Skinner-EngUsh; Mrs. Mary Cauley- mathematics and civics; Mrs. Mary E. Skinner- science; Mr. O. H. Hildebrand- general music; Mrs. Mary Mullis-home economics; Mr. Joe Joyce-agriculture. Class officers were: President: Butch Porter; Vice President: Jerry Sams; Secretary Treasurer: Patsy Mayse; Reporter: Doris Cutlip. On September 4, 1956 we entered the Sophomore class with Mrs. Mary Cauley as homeroom teacher. Our teachers were: Mrs. Mary Cauley- mathematics; Mrs. Mary E. Skinner- English and science; Miss Vida Fairchild-commercial; Mr. Charles Francis Hileman-social studies; Mr. O. H. Hildebrand- music; Mrs. Mary Mullis-home econom- ics; Mr. Joe Joyce-agriculture. This year Mr. John B. Farrar replaced Mr. Fred Knoblock as Principal. Class officers were: President: Wayne Taylor; Vice President: Wilson Neff; Secretary: Blair Brinkley; Treasurer: David McCauley; Reporter: Ann Lowman. We entered the Jimior Class September 3, 1957 with Miss Vida Fairchild as our homeroom teacher. Three new teachers joined the faculty this year, Mr. Richard Catron to teach agriculture, Mr. Robert Sauter for social studies and boy ' s coach and Mrs. Mary Root for music. Our other teachers were: Mr. M. P. Skinner-English; Mrs. Mary Cauley-mathematics; Mrs. Mary E. Skinner-s cience; Miss Vida Fairchild-commercial; Mrs. Mary Mullis-home economics. We presented a Junior Play, Tumbling Creek which was a big success. We were very excited when we received our class rings on March 26. Our class officers were: President: Joyce Deeds; Vice President: Troy Mullis; Secretary: Mitzy Cauley; Treas- urer: Doris Cutlip; Reporter: Faye Matheney. At last we reached one of the biggest goals of our life when on September 3, 1958 we entered the Senior Class with Mr. M. P. Skinner as our sponsor. Some have dropped or failed in the past years but we still have 15. Three new teachers joined the faculty this year, Mr. Thomas Capley to teach social studies and be coach, Mr. Gordon Ellis for English and Miss June Carter for music. Our other teachers were: Mr. M. P. Skinner-commercial and English; Mr. John Farrar- chemistry; Mrs. Mary Cauley-math- ematics and Latin; Mrs. Mary E. As we look back we will always remember the happy and trying moments we have spent together. Time can really fly and most of us cannot realize that we have reached our last year. In June we hope to graduate with the determination to find a bright and successful future ahead of us. 14 Hialeh, Florida April 13, 1956 Dear Troy, A few weeks ago I had a sentimental impulse to write or look up all of my former classmates. I had a commission to do some original paintings of jungle animals of South America. As I was sailing home I ran into Joyce Deeds. I wasn’t too surprised to learn she is married. She and her husband were returning home from their honeymoon. Doris Cutlip wrote me that she is now a private secretary in Richmond. She ran into ByranBottenfield one day and he said he is now a mechanic. She said Faye Matheney is married and lives in Clifton Forge. Gay Grimm lives near her and is a nurse at the C. O. Hospital. Mitzy Cauley stopped by to see me when she was on her vacation. Although we do not fully appreciate the art of boxing, we went to see a match one night. Guess who was sitting on the front row? Butch Porter! He said Page Barnes plays second base for the New York Yankees. John Mayse’s address is still Millboro. John is a farmer. Wayne Purvis always was smart but now he is top executive in a bank in Washington D. C. Jerry Sams is a truck driver for the Pony Express Company. He wrote me that Sam Armstrong re-enlisted in the Navy. Remember my best girl friend, Ann Lowman? Well, she and her handsome hus- band took me to the horse races last Saturday. Althoughwe were unaware of what lay ahead of us, we had a very interesting and a most enjoyable year. As Sophomores, we had come one step farther toward our meager goal. This year we had a class enrollment of 30 leaving behind 2 of our former classmates and gaining 2 who have remained with us through our Junior year. We carried out numerous projects as Sophomores with great success. Now still another step ahead of us as we continue to strive for our high school educa- tion, we have reached the midterm of our Jun- ior year. Our class rings are ordered, and we are presenting Arsenic and Old Lace as our Junior class play. As Juniors, our great- est esteem goes to our class sponsor and we also wish to ej ress thanks to all the other teachers who have showed patience and kind- ness and who have helped make our Junior year a success. We are looking forward to reaching the top. 22 Tommy Simmons Joan Bright Tommy Porter Kay Coffey Margaret Nicely Jerry Duty Jane Bogan Gerald Clark Frankie McCoy Linda Hevener Conway Howell Jean Coursey Peggy Brizendine Alvin Law Evelyn Reynolds Billy Deitz Leroy Roberts Ruby Riley Charles Pritt Karen Anderson Mildred Neff Stanley Wade omove Row 1 Left to right: Linda Beck, Carolyn Burns, Phyllis Whitson, Patsy Robinson.
