The hearTbeaT of The halau Chula schoolj is The kumu hula, a posiTion ThaT Teacher John Topo- linskiknows well, As The kumu hula for The presfigious Ka Pa Hula Ha- waii, lvlr. Topolinski for Tops as he is affecTionaTely calledy allows his halau To perform only aT The mosf selecfive evenTs. They have performed before TahiTian royal- Ty, and many oiher prominenT digniTaries. Even as a social sTudies Teach- er, Tops' exiended his love for his culTure in his Hawaiian hisiory class. There he hoped To imparT some of The reverence for The TradiTions which he almosT ig- nored as a young man. Being broughf up in a wesfern culTure, Tops adopTed aTTiTudes Toward dancing which were common aT ThaT Time: dancing was noT for men.
