The locker combinations, numbered roons, and strange faces were a complicated puzzle to us. After learning our way around, we had our first class meeting and elected the following officers: President, Bob Covang Vice-President, Darlene Buhrnesterg Secretary- Treasurer, Jean Fanningg Student Council members, Dorothy Hill and Betty Matson. Our class sponsors were Miss Beverly Alderson and R. C. Tursbaugh. Donna Fritch served as cheerleader. Her friendly spirit made us proud of her. We chose Jean Fanning and Lucille Stebbins as our Homecoming queen candidates. Since we were only freshmen and not too well known, we were astonished and thrilled when Jean becare queen. We survived the first trying year and we were looking forward to the next three years. In September of '47, having lost our previous shyness, we returned to school after a splendid vacation. Soon we chose our class officers with Miss Ann Dittlinger and Mr. Eldon Hitchens assisting us: President, Bob Corgensong Vice-President, David Ritenourg Secretary-Treasurer, Doris Ueidrg Student Council members, Beverly Comer and Ramon Cantway. Again we were honored to have a member of our class, Doris Meida, chosen as cheerleader. Her poise made the members of the teams more self-confident and helped make the crowds more sportsmanlike. Next came the excitement of Homecoming. With a determination to win again this year, we norinated Mary Arnold and Doris Ueida as queen candidates. Our king candidates were Bob Jorgensen and Jin Brum ett. We were again successful, for Mary was crowned Homecoming queen. Since it was Leap Year, we sponsored a UTwirpU Dance in which the girls invited the boys. We enjoyed managing our first dance. Just think! We became juniors in that fateful year of '48. With dreams of a pleasant year and Q beautiful prom, the class officers were chosen with Bob Cowan as President, Mary Arnold, Vice-Presidentg Marylin Nichols, Secretaryg Edward Bohlman, Treasurer, and Edith Ramsey and David Ritenour, Student Council members. A new member of our class, Edith Ramsey, became cheerleader. Her grand school spirit and winning smile were an inspiration to both teams and spectators alike, Under the able assistance of our class sponsors, Miss Ann Dittlinger and Mr. William Handles, we sponsored the Homecoming Dance. Our queen candidates were Edith Ramsey and Marylin Nichols. This year the juniors revived the Homecoming parade. The gaiety and enthusiasm over the parade helped,to make Homecoming more successful. Soon.we began working diligently on our Junior-Senior prom, the theme of which was NSpring Ballet.H Us had a magnificent time dancing to the music of Lu George in our beautiful pastel-colored ballroom. At last, we were Usophisticatedu seniors, although there were only forty in our class. For our final year we chose the following officers: President, Robert Jorgenscng Vice-President, Edith Ramseyg Secretaryb Treasurer, Marylin Nicholsg Student Council members, Nancy Hartman and David Ritenour. Our class sponsors were Miss Geneva Schultheis, Mr. Nr,-llace Ccrpenter, and MT. R. C. TIll'Z'1b3ugh' Edith Ramsey was our cheerleader again. We were very proud of her when she was re-elected. Barbara Dcud and Doris Heida were the queen attendants at the Homecoming Dance representing the class of '50, Next we worked busily, under the direction of Miss Maxine Bloom, on our class play entitled WFootloose,n which we presented in November. 9 Our senior pictures were taken, announcements and invitations ordered, and plans made for our trip to Mackinac Island and Sault Locks We then began work on the URevcil1en with Robert Cowan as Editor- in-Chief. Soon we will pass through the portals of MTHS for the last time as students. Graduation will soon go down in history and our high school days will be over. We will have to assume new responsibilities in life after high school but we will be unafraid. Accorplish we must! Acconplish we will! CLASS HISTORIES - Freshmen Forty-three frightened but excited members of the class of '53 started their first day of high school life in the fall of 1949. Although everything was confusing at first, we finally became accustomed to high school and we chose our class officers. They were: President, David Crawford, Vice-President, Carrell Marshallg Secretary, Bernadine Parisg Treasurer, Marian Lauterbachg and Student Council members, Beverly Davis and Kenneth Ecker. Miss English, Miss Englund, and Mr. Piersol were our class sponsors. Beverly Doud and Beverly Davis represented our class as queen candidates for the Homecoming Dance. We thought that Homecoming was a marvelous event, even though it was a new experience for us. After the humiliation, dread, and fun of initiation, we felt as if we belonged. We are eagerly looking forward to next year when we will no longer be referred to as Nfreshies.n Sophomore In the fall of '48, we freshmen began our high school career. After learning to open our lockers, getting to classes on time and becoming acquainted with our classmates, we elected class officers. They were: President, Bonnie Parish, Vice-President, Suzanne Callahan, Secretary-Treasurer, Bob Crawford, and Student Council members, Joan Purdin and Jimmy Stebbins. Our sponsors were Miss Alderson and Mr. Turnbaugh. The first big activity we participated in was Homecoming. We thought that the new experience of making a float and taking part in the parade was a great deal of fun. O r queen candidates were Suzanne Callahan and Joyce Walker. It wasn't long before the members of our class had joined the different clubs and we were feeling as if we really belonged. The following September saw us back at school again with m ch more confidence than the previous year. Soon we elected Charles Hasselbring as President, Andy Hassen, Vice-President, Suzanne Callahah, Secretary-Treasurer, and Student Council members, Nadine Newtson and Robert Crawford. We began participating in the school activities under the guidance of our class sponsors, Miss Maxine Bloom and Mr. Eldon Hitchens. . With a determination to win this year, we chose Ruth Buss and Roseann Smith as our Homecoming queen candidates. We were delighted when Ruth succeeded in being crowned queen. On March 17, we had the pleasure of sponsoring the St. Pat's Dance. Even though the crowd was small, we had a marvelous time dancing to the music of John Piersol's orchestra. Thus, we have finished our second year. We are anxiously looking forward to being juniors and to going to gpg prom. Junior The membersof the olassof '51 began a new experience by entering high school in September of 147. After the newness had worn off, we elected class officers: President, Gene Callahan: Vice-President, Ivan Coxg Secretary-Treasurer, Phyllis Beatty: e d Student Council rwnbers, Curolyn Brewer and Bob Hix. with the excitement that always exists at Homecoming time, we chose Rosanna Hawthorne and Phyllis Beatty as queen candidates and Bob Hix and Don Hodge as king candidates. re were very grateful to our sponsors, Miss Alderson and Mr. ' Turnbnugh, for helping us in our first year. We returned to school the following fall with great hopes for a successful year. To lead us, we chose Rosanna Hawthorne as President: Bob Hix, Vice-Presidentg Louise Zinn, Secretary-Treasurer: and Phyllis Beatty, and David VanHoveln, Student Council members. Our sponsors were Miss Brunskill and Mr. Hitchens. Homecoming time was an even more delightful experience than before because several new things had been added. We had such fun decorating our float around the theme, nCooking Catlin's Goose.n When we were. awerded first place for having the best float, we felt that we had been repaid for our hard work. Our float looted outstanding in the parade. After our victory ovcr Catlin, the excitement became even greater. Our Homecoming queen candidates were Phyllis Collins and Lois VanHove1n. Later on in the year, we sponsored the Spring Hop, which we felt was a huge success. 'When autumn came again, we began our thrilling junior year. With eager anticipation for the highlights of this year, the Homecoming Dance and Prom, we chose our class officers. They were: President, Bob Hix: Vice-President, Donald Buhrmestorg Secretary, Carolyn Brewer: Treasurer, Dolores Brutlagg and Student Council rwnbers, Phyllis Collins and Kenneth Rollins. We worked energetically for tho Homecoming Dance and chose Delores Balanoff and Betty Probasco to represent our class as queen candidates. vb were again proud when our float, nTaming Rossvilleu was awarded first prize. Then we found ourselves in the midst of our prom activities. had such fun keeping the theme a secret since the seniors were so curiousw, Under the guidance of our sponsors, Miss Dittlinger, Miss Brunskikl, and Mr. Kunz, we worked hard in an attempt to make our' prom the best one that IHHS has ever had. This was the first year that a prom was held without a banquet. We thought that it was very successful. After waiting for three years to reach this goal, we will soon be the leaders of the school as seniors. ,X C., J p .. LA 'r' E I f X9 sq: ,, W K, www W XX v . The Milford Chapter is known as the Bi-Phi-Chi Club-- a name obtained from the three fields of science offered in the school. Any student can become a member if he has taken or is taking a course in science. After being pledged he is then subjected to an infernal initiation followed by a for- mal one. The Science Club holds at least one night meeting monthly with an occasional day meeting. These meetings con- sist of discussions, movies, initiations, reports, lectures, experiments and plans for an annual trip. It is the aim of the Bi-Phi-Chi Club to secure parti- cipation of our members in such activities which will Ill promote scientific understandings C21 remove prejudices and superstitions l3J remote critical thinking and use of scientific method QED develop hobbies and leisure time activities 153 to increase our knowledge of science. Thirty members joined the mass chorus under the direction of Mark Biddle, Professor of Music at Knox College of Galesburg, for a busy day of music, Several Milford students were selected from the entire choral group to sing solos. A winter concert, the first presented for several years, was given by the entire chorus on December 8, Some of the highlights of the evening were solos by Rita Todd, Herb Shoufler, and the Girls Sextette. Most of the time this spring has been devoted to preparing for the district and state music contests. Eleven Milford students brought home first division medals from the district contest and so we were entitled to represent Milford High at the State finals, Herbert Shoufler and Charles Hasselbring won firsts in medium voice, and the boy's quartette and the girls' sextette won firsts in the ensemble contests. Of those that went on to the state contest, The girls sextette won first. Plans are already underway for the County Music Festival which is to be held at Milford next fall. Mr, Biddle will again be the guest conductor. So as you can see, we are looking forward to an even bigger and more successful year next fall.
