9 ,152 'S N The second game was a decisive victory for Milford over a not too well organized quintet from Hamden Hall. Hammer was once again high scorer with fifteen points and Lewis Cohen was runner up with ten points. The only game that went into the lost column was a very well played ballgame with Suffield Academy. This game was one of the hottest games ever played by two line teams. Commendable ball- handling was demonstrated by every player and shots were many and accurate. Near the end of the fray, Lewis Cohen hooped a sensational push shot from center court which brought the house down in amaze- ment. Milford finally weakened, however, and Suffield went ahead to win the ball game by the score of 34 to 26. The Milford Red Devils came back after their defeat by Suffield to win over a strong and large aggregation from Admiral Billard Academy. The score was close up to the closing quarter of the game. Both teams kept scoring and Roger Stern put in five fouls to put Milford out in front with a good lead. The final score was Milford 27, Admiral Billard 21. The high scorer for this fray was Don Fine with eight points. .sa 'vs ll r 5 J - 44

V. basketball team compiled a rather fine record of three wins and one loss. This schedule had not been completed as yet so the final record could not be stated. At the beginning of the 1949 season the team had many excellent prospects. Don Fine and Fred Hammer were a pair of deceptive forwards, Lewis Choo Choo Cohen and Burt Schneider split the bucket slot very nicely. Morris Shorofsky, Roger Stern, and Mike Roth rounded out the quintet at guards. The V. team started rolling when they defeated a large but slow Collegiate Prep. ensemble. The score was low as Collegiate played a possession game of ball. The final score was Milford 19, Collegiate 13. The high scorer for Milford was Fred Hammer with eight points. -,.,fv,f 3 43

LEAGUE BASKETBALL The League Team did not enjoy as good a season as last year, but still the boys held their own against some pretty good teams and most of the defeats were by a close margin. The team was coached by Frank Pop Long, who did a very able job of it. The season started off with West Haven B. C. here at Milford which initialed our first loss. The second game was a very nice win for us against Fairfield Country Day. The first half ended with a Fairfield victory in sight but a determined Milford team was on the floor now and took the game 56 to 50. The third encounter was a rematch with West Haven which went in the lost column to the tune of 36 to 54. In the final minutes of the fourth encounter, Milford went down to defeat to Whittier of Bridge- port which was one of the best games played by the team. The real heart-breaker of the year was when the team lost 18 to 17 in a matter of a few seconds with a rematch with Fairfield Country Day. The team as a whole played good ball, but lacked sufficient practice. It used the 2-1-2 zone and progressed learn- ing this defense during the season as it went on. The offense did not click as expected and the ball games were pretty low-scoring affairs. The season was not what you'd call successful, but everyone connected with the team had a good time and bene- fitted a lot by their experience.
