We have had four years of fun, education, and even disappointments. The first couple of weeks of school were very frightening for the eight new freshmen, who were Beverly Puck, Donita Shandy, Betty Bruce, Carol Mellinger, Delores Mullen, Buford Miller, Stanley Shivers, and Ron Shandy, Mrs. Arthur Jones was our sponsor. We were scared to death of initiation because several of us had older brothers and sis- ters who said they would really be rough, As the day of initiation came, we found out that initiation wasn't so bad after all, in fact, we had more fun that day than any other time during our freshman year. Of course, all of us were rather shy during this first year but we got along just fine with everyone and our first step of high school was complet- ed. During our first few months of school, Glena Babb joined our class, Delores Mullen left our class that year and attended Chapman High School, where the Mullen family had made their home. Our second year began a little different for us. We felt much different as far as shyness was concerned, Mr. Lauren Gaddis was our class sponsor and we really started getting the class spirit. That year we started making money for our class. We had a class party and joined many other activities. Shirley Dornberger joined our class starting our sophomore year, she had been a former student at Wakefield High School. Donita Shandy left the class and later married Jess Decker. They are now living south of Milford. Our high School career WHS halfway completed, but our junior year was very busy. Betty Bruce left our class and moved to Wyoming, where she later married. During this year, we had our Junior Play, entitled Mama's Angel Child , Mrs. Sheila Peleaux, our class sponsor, sponsored the play, Also we prepared the Jr-Sr, Banquet, The theme of our banquet was Moonlight and Roses , We really worked to make our banquet a success. ' At last, the year we had been waiting for finally came, our senior year. We wanted to make the most of our last year, and we did, Of course, we studied very hard, but we also had a lot of fun, Each day we knew that it was getting closer to graduation, When the time came in May, it was the unforgettable day of our school career, We knew that after that day, each one of us would take a new and different road in the future. last Will and Testament We, the Seniors of nineteen-hundred and fifty-six, school of Milford Rural High, I city of Milford, County of Geary, State of Kansas, being of improved and strong mind, do hereby declare and publish this to be our last will and testament. To the Freshman Class we are leaving our ability of talking our parents into letting us go someplace every time we want to go. To the Sophomore Class we will our ability to grow up, hoping they will take ad- vantage of it and grow to an average height. To the Junior Class we will our good manners. and ability to get along so well together To the teachers and principal we leave the memories of our smiling faces, good grades, and all our cooperation, hoping they will never forget us. To the school we will our ability of working together and getting things done in a hurry. I, Buford Miller, will my ability to play basketball to Gary Shandy, To Charlie Luthi I leave my ability to dance, hoping he will make as good use of it as I did. I, Stanley Shivers, will my 1948 Plymouth to Robert Smith so he can drive to the show. To my brother Gail I leave my good manners, so he can impress all the girls. I, Beverly Puck, will my ability to play basketball to Dorothey Morfitt. To Roberta Leabo I leave my ability of getting along so well with the United States Navy, hoping they will draft her a tall, handsome man, I, Shirley Dornberger, will my diamond ring to Verna Belin, To Jerry Mellinger I leave my Ford so he won't have so much difficulty in getting Charlene to the show. I. Ronald Shandy, will my safe driving habits to Kenneth Breen. To Jay Christensen and Bill Noble I leave my technique with the women, knowing they will make better use of it than I did. I, Carol Mellinger, will my ability to sing to Ioan Shandy, To Jim Head and Janice Brighton I leave my ability to gat along so well with the teacher, hoping they will have better luck then I did. I, Glena Babb, will by ability to catch a man to Kay Bigham and Marilyn Martin, To Darlene Breen I leave by ability to type, hoping she will do as good as I have. Junk.,-, Class Prophecy Our little town of Milford has really been growing since the Milford Dam was built. My hotel overlooks the Milford Dam. It is beautifully decorated and has an indoor swim ming pool, the Skyline, which has a big dance every evening with a very popular dance band, and to top that off, each room has a different room feature. Carol Mellinger has really gone a long was since she graduated from college, She is now a recording star for RCA Victor and she also has a TV program on CBS net- work. Her main songs are blues and she is staying in the Blue Room. Buford Miller became an ambassador to Great Britain. While he lives in the United States, he rents a penthouse in New York City, I-Ie met the prime minister's daughter on his last trip and married her before returning home, He wanted the penthouse suite on the top floor, Here comes our movie star of the graduating class. She won her fame in western movies and in the show Our Class. We were not really surprised at Beverly Puck being a movie star, because she starred in all the high school plays. She chose our western decorated room to stay in. We are very lucky to have the President of the People's National Bank system. He graduated from Brown Mackie's Business School and started to work right away after graduation. Stanley Shivers chose the bridal suite for his room. He married the daughter of the Kansas governor about two weeks ago. Our swimrning pool is really getting a workout now that Shirley Dornberger is stay- ing here. She has won the Women's National Swimming Award and she has also won many water skiing contests, While she is living here she is going to show us how she won he-r awards. I'm not surprised that she wanted the room overlooking the Milford Darn, Our baseball star was seen by the Kansas City Athletics and asked to join them, After he joined them, they went on to win the World Series. He became so famous that MGM wanted to do the story of his life, Our sports room was the favorite with Ronald Shandy. Glena Babb married a boy from Industry after graduating from school. They now have a big cattle ranch near there, She now has two lovely daughters. Glena likes our old fashioned room. ' Well, things have really changed for me since I started into the hotel business. It was wonderful teaching at M.R,H.S, but since I am a retired teacher it is wonderful to be able to see all my students having reunions in the hotel, I am hoping that we will soon have another reunion in my hotel, Ode To The Seniors Eight little freshmen were we, As we entered school in '53, And before we knew it graduation was nigh, Because our four years of nigh school had Stanley Shivers: President of the class was he, A businessman he intends to be, If you want a true, sincere friend Upon Stan you can depend. D Beverly Puck: A stenographer she intends to be, How long 'twill last, we shall see For Ron's ring she always wears Because he's the one for whom sh o 6 Ca1'eS. Buford Miller: Big brown eyes and six feet high, When he's around all the girls do sigh, He plays the saxophone in the band, And as class reporter he is grand, A Carol Mellinger: Kayette President is she, Polite and friendly will always be. For her to make A's is nothing new, She is a good musician too. Ronald Shandy: A good basketball player was he, Polite and friendly and always will be. A lot of friends he's always had, Because he's really a wonderful lad, Shirley Dornberger: In math, and A she always got, - For a bookkeeper is what she sought. She wears a diamond on her third finger, As a single lass she will not linger. Glena Babb: A seamstress she longs to be, A project done you'll always see, Around the school she's really handy, To Norm, she' a dandy, Over the past four years we look, At all that studying and all those books. Now all of us long for all the fun and joys, To be back in school with all those girls a flown by nd boys NDERGRADS --5 if' JU IOR CLASS r' .F -' XA fl :A BACK ROW: Mr. Faulkner, sponsor, Charles Luthi, Jim Head, Gary Shandy FRONT ROW: Jay Christensen, Janice Brighton. X Z GTIVITIES Xl Freshman Initation As usual the seniors had a lot of fun the first week or two of school teasing the freshmen. Especially the day of freshman initiation, September 13, 1955, During the day we saw some of the rarest creatures, but as we examined them, we found out they were just the freshmen dressed up in the funniest costumes, There was Dorothy Morfitt running around in her pajamas and high heels. Marilyn Martin was wearing long underwear fbackwardsj. To top that off she wasn't wearing any shoes. Verna Belin was wearing a basketball uniform with work shoes. Kay Big- ham was wearing a skirt draped around her shoulders. Oh, those handsome creatures Gail Shivers wore a man's vest and a skirt with bloomers underneath, Billy Noble was dressed as a woman, I didn't mention that these kids had a vegetable hanging around their neck, lipstick all over them, and they had cake coloring and corn starch in their hair. The freshmen had to do several duties during the day, Of course first of all they had to obey the seniors. Every time they saw a senior they had to bow and say Praise the Seniors . They had to go up the stairs on one foot. Candy was served to all the seniors. To punish the freshmen for breaking initiation rules, kangaroo Court was held that evening. Here at this court, we really had fun, Following the court hearing, the seniorsserved the school refreshments and then everyone went to Junction City where part of the school attended a show, while the others went skating. wif'-5-' , yr 'Q-Wi , Xa Q . By some chance this clause in the will was overlooked i and was discovered just two days before that event. His lawyer agreed to fix matters up for him and he certainly was some fixer. It includes both Athletics and Ethics for there is Ethics in Athletics. On the Athletic side the boy must learn that he will have to take it in life . That he will not always be a winner. Not whether he won or lost the game, but how he played the game. On the Ethical side he must know that he must play fair with his classmates. That he will not take unfair advantage of them either in class or later in the business world, Our boys try to practice these two ideas by putting them to practical use. In conclusion the M Club tries to help and assist in anything that is for the better ment of the school and the individual, FRONT ROW: OFFICERS: Janice Brighton. Carol Mellinger. The officers were: President, Carol Mellingerg Vice-President, Beverly Puck: Secretary-Treasurer, Janice Brighton, and Reporter, Joan Shandy, Mrs, Goldie Ioneswas the Kayette sponsor, This year the Kayettes are proud to announce they have received their 6,000 point award which they worked for last year. They received this award by doing certain activities in school, church, community, and world service. During this year the girls have been working for their 7,000 point award. Two girls, Beverly Puck and Carol Mellinger, represented the Milford Kayettes at Rock Springs Kayette Camp Session this summer. The camp sessions were held for five days and during these five days these two girls enlarged their love for the Kayette organization. Again next summer two girls will be sent to camp. Many activities were enjoyed throughout the year by the Kayettes. The annual slumber party was held in September to help the girls get acquainted, At Christmas, the girls had a lot of fun going Christmas Caroling. They also made some money on this project by selling candles to the people to whom they sang. During the week of February 13-18 the Kayettes had a Sweetheart Sister Week. The girls had Sweetheart Sisters and each day they did something nice for their sister. To end the week, a Valentine party was given for the girls and their sponsors. This year Carol Mellinger, Shirley Dornberger, and Mrs, Goldie Jones attended a Kayette Conference at Minneapolis, Kansas on October Z7-28. While they were at . conference they attended many group 'discussions and general sessions, Also a unit conference was held in the spring and all the Milford Kayettes attended, The Christmas spirit was shown at Christmas time by adopting a family from Junction City. At Thanksgiving we helped the grade school cooks by decorating the tables. Some of the work projects were: giving money for meals for millions, In this way we could provide one meal for 3 cents. Also we sent 35.00 to Korea through C,A.R,E. We have received several very interesting letters in return from these people and through these letters we realize how important our little deeds are, The Kayettes also were hostesses at the Athletic Banquet and they had a Mother-Daughter Tea. The Kayettes had a paper drive to get money for their projects. One big money project this year was to sell food at the Tri-Y League Tournament, This year haslbeen a very successful year for the Kayettes and we have had many interesting lessons and discussions. Kayette Slumber Party The Kayettes had their annual slumber party on September 20, in the high school gymnasium. The party was started by going to Junction City where part of the girls went skating and the others went to the show. During the evening, the girls enjoyed many snacks. They had candy, fruit, coffee, pop, and anything they could eat, Everyone really stuffed themselves. The sponsors, Mrs. Goldie .Tones and Mrs, Anice Faulkner, enjoyed the evening also. Of course they had a hard time keeping awake, but they tried their best, Most of the girls stayed up all night, but during school the next day, they had an aw- ful time keeping their eyes Open. Milford High School Carnival On October 28, 1955, the Milford High School held their annual carnival, The merchants of Wakefield, Milford, and Junction City donated many valuable gifts for the bingo stand. A skit entitled Hillbilly Sue was presented twice in the study hall. We had several new stands this year in addition to the usual ones we have every year, The country store had a continuous line of customers due to the fine merchandise The jail had the usual amount of business because of so many people disobeying the law. The basketball throw went out of business early in the evening losing all its gifts to the good ball players. Some of the other stands were the fishpond, penny toss, and the dart throw, The Blue Star Inn set up business in the music room selling a lot of delicious food. Mr. Harold Hudson won the beautiful heart,-shaped cake made and donated by Eva and Arfie Condray, The door prize was won by Mrs. Hulda Enfield. The prize was a beautiful wool blanket purchased at a reduced price from Townsends. Several of the young children came masked and all of them received a prize for their costumes. , The carnival was a success and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
