g . m Kayettes The Kansas State Activities Association for youth is the largest youth organization in A the state, Milford High School has 10071 Kayette membership, The Kayettes specialize in teaching the members through weekly meeting and programs, service projects and recreational activities in the school, church, community and world service, Meetings are held each Thursday with every third Thursday set aside for devotions, The 1953-54 officers are: President Darlene Walters, Vice-President Charlotte Bentz, Secretary Velma Stevens and Reporter Carol Mellinger, Mrs, Goldie jones is the sponsor, Two Kayettes, Darlene Walters and Velma Stevens spent an enjoyable session at Rock Springs Ranch, Kayette Camp, August l9-23, 1953, Over 200 girls from all over Kansas attended this camp, On September 29th, at 8:00 P, M, the Kayettes sponsored a program in the high school auditorium, :A freewill, offering was taken 'to replenish the treasury, The program opened with numbers by the girls' glee club followed by a trumpet solo by Larry jones, A vocal solo by Darlene Walters ,preceded at humorous one-act play entitled Experience Necessary, The cast consisted of Charlotte Bentz, Velma Stevens, Janice Brighton, and Anna Johnston, A vocal solo by Carol Mellinger and a clarinet solo by Beverly Puck added variety to the program, To help make the program a success, the boys' quartet, consisting of Raymond Shivers, Roy Head, Richard Kanawyer, and Gene Christensen presented two numbers, The last, but not least, number on the program was a one-act comedy, The Ghost In The Green Gown , presented by Darlene Walters, Carol Mellinger, joan Shandy, Shirley Dornberger, Barbara Heskett, and Roberta Leabo, Mrs, jones directed the plays and Miss Thacker the musical numbers, . The Kayettes had their annual slumber party at the high school, October 14th, They first went to a show at junction City after which they came back to the high school and prepared to retire for the night, After much hilarity they finally settled down for the rest of the morning and for a few hours of sleep, The next morning they arose fresh as daisies and prepared a scrumptious meal of bacon, eggs, oranges, cocoa, toast and jam, They all reported a swell time. On October 2.8-29, two delegates, Charlotte Bentz and Darlene Walters, accompanied by Mrs, jones, attended a Kay and Kayette Conference held at Lincoln, The girls were kept busy attending meditations, discussion groups, and general sessions, At the recognition service held the last day, the delegates received a 4000 point award bar to place on the 3000 point plaque received last year, , I At Christmas we adopted a needy family and presented them with bedding, cooking utensils, and foodstuffs, n Packages were sent to families in Greece through C,A,R,E, in a service called Oper- ation Reindeez- , The packages contained condensed food' for five different families, We have received letters from three-of thefamilies thanking us. ' To start the Christmas- vacation, the Kayettes and some of the boys presented a program. A one-act play entitled Christmas Stockings was given by Shirley Dornberger, Beth' Brllflef Roberta Leabo, Carol Mellinger, V-Ona Davies, Jay Christensen, Buford Miller and Stanley Shivers Velma Stevens read some Christmas poems, Charlotte Bentz sang White Christmas, and Beverly Puck played a clarinet solo, Hai-k the Herald Angels Sing , The program was closed with the boys' quartet, Raymond Shivers, Roy Head, Richard Kanawyer, and Gene Christensen singing 'Silent Night, After the program the gifts which had been placed under the tree were distributed by the Freshman Class, I ' Instead of selling candles to the townspeople this year, the girls sold mistletoe, Everyone seemed eager to buy it and we were soon sold out, In return for buying the mistletoe, the girls sang Christmas Carols, The high school gym ,was the scene of a gala affair January 29th. What else could that be but the june in January Party ? For a wider variety of dancing partners, the Kayettes invited the boys, The girls came dressed in summer dresses and sandals while the boys co-operatively dressed in summer attire, The evening was spent playing gaxnes and dancing, The refreshments were carried out in the summer theme also, with picnic food consisting of hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, potato chips, pickles, iced tea, cake and homemade ice cream. Did l s'ay'refresh-- ments ? lt was more like a banquet. Each year in addition to the Regional Conferences held in the fall, a series of small unit conferences give the students in the smaller high schools an opportunity to entertain a conference, to furnish leaders for the discussion groups, and to build a fine inter-school spirit, This year Milford played host to one of these conferences held March 29th, Three schools Olsburg, Randolph, and West Moreland came to Milford, D The Kayettes honored the boys of Milford Rural High School on April 9, 1954- with an Athletic Banquet, All the parents and faculty were invited and enjoyed a good meal and enter- taining program, ln May, the Kayettes entertained their mothers with a Mother-Daughter tea, After a short program presented by the girls, dainty refreshments were served and asocial period followed, ' ,
