We had a lot of new experiences that year, Our Freshman initiation was pretty bad but we all lived through it. The year passed by quickly for our class. Then in fall of 1949 we came back to Milford and there were seven Sophornores. We lost Kenneth Trotter who went to join the Navy. We also lost Rayford Blevins in March of 1950 who moved with his folks to a different farm. The rest of the Sopho- mores finished their Sophomore year, F We came back to Milford High School in September 1950 with only three Juniors. Pat Head, Elsie Stevens, and Floyd Nels on. Bonnie Head had quit school. Bonnie Jean went to Chapman High School and Kieth Trotter left to join. the Navy. However in our Junior year Bob Johnston from Scandia came to Milford to go to school. We finished our Junior year with these four. Our last and final year in 1951 and 1952 there were again only three of us: Floyd, Bob, and Elsie. Pat Head did not finish school. The following were: Bob Johnston was president, Floyd Nelson, vice-president, and Elsie Stevens, secretary-treasurer. We completed our year with the same three. Class Poem l The time to graduate is near We never thought we'd make it here. From M. H. s. our Alma Motor, ' To venture where there are many other. Ours is the smallest class of all, Gnly three answer the roll call. We're always there when it comes to work, Not a one did ever shirk. Bob, Johnston is a swell guy, He never bothers anyone. Always with a friendly grin, Which he refuses none. Bob Johnston is a swell guy, Who talks but very little. But there is something special, In all he has to say. Elsie Stevens is quite a girl, She sure is cute, but not much of a talker. She's lots of fun, or so I havelheard, If she makes a promise, she keeps her word Elsie is Sam's girl, Once in awhile they go for a whirl, In Sam's 1951 Ford, Made of bolts, tin, and board. Floyd is a happy go lucky lad, Whenever he's around you're glad. Some new trick he's always trying, I know someday he will catch you spying. floyd is o jolly good fellow, There's mischief in his eyes. He gets the girls without a sigh, Of course, he never ever tells them goodbye Prophecy Ten long years have passed since I have been to Milford last. My thoughts are returning back to the year I was a Senior at Milford High School. There were only three of us that year, two boys, and one girl. They were Floyd Nelson, Bob Johnston, and Elsie Stevens. How the time has passed-it seems only yesterday we were back there. Why only last night I was listening to the radio when I heard the voice of Floyd Nelson. He is now a great singer on the radio and plays on T.V. shows. I have heard he has won many trips to different places in other countries because of his famous voice. Now he is going to go back to Milford for sort of a reunion. Every one will flock from all over to hear his famous voice. I was talking to one of Bob .Tohnston's cousins the other night and he is now governor of California, I wasn't surprised to hear it, I always knew he would be something like that. Bob became married to Phylis and they are living in California now. Bob is also a great speaker in government work, I-Ie is suppose to make a speech tonight. I surely don't want to miss it. I have now made dancing my career. Just think I get to have so many good look- ing men for my pardoners. I'm not married yet and well I guess I jiist have too much todo besides thinking of getting married. Of course if the right handsome man comes along I'm sure I'll change my mind. This was my only evening off and here I have been sitting and thinking about our years in high school and now just look how time has changed everything. Well, I don't want to miss hearing Floyd sing, or Bob's famous speech so I better hurry around I guess. Sitting here I couldn't have helped but see how successful my class- mates are. Q LastgWil1 and Testament We, the Senior class of the School of Milford, County of Geary, State of Kansas, being of sound mind, body, and memory do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament, revoking any wills heretofore made by us. We leave the Freshmen the good example we have set as Seniors and hope they get more out of school than we did. We leave the Juniors our easy, dignified ways, knowing they will never have them. We leave the Sophomores our good grades and hope they will keep them up. I, Bob Johnston, do hereby leave the following items: To Raymond Shivers, my ability to get good grades in history. 1 To Bob Oldnettle, my steady girl if he thinks he can get her. To Harlan Wilson, I will my 4l so that he can get from one place to the other. ' To Roy Head, my 1-9 tractor, so if he gets left in Junction he'll have a way to get home. To Darlene Walters, my ability to stay home every night of the week, with cme exception. That is only on basketball nights. I know she will do this. To William Davies my typing ability. ' To the teachers a bottle of Hadacol to help them recouperate from the trouble that I have caused them. I, Floyd Nelson, being of sound mind QI HOPE, leave the following items: To Roy Head my good old 41 Ford in case his breaks down, fand it probably wil1.j To Gene Christensen, I leave my ability to play basketball. To Raymond Shivers, my ability to get along with the girls. To Roberta Mellinger, how to keep trim without going on a diet. To Ruth Roether, I will my ability of getting good grades in history. To the school, I hope they don't get another student that has caused them as much trouble as I have. ' I, Elsie Irene Stevens, being of sound mind leave the following items: To Ruth Roether, my ability of always being to class on time. To my little sister Velma, I give my history book that I used so much in hopes she will take good care of it. To Darlene Walters, my way of never getting into trouble and always being good. To Anna Johnston, my ability of always getting to bed early in the evening, so she can be bright and cheerful the next day. ' I hope the teachers and students of Milford High School will be fortunate in not having another student like me. xl ---.--.vwvwvfwrwv-fn---.--,- -i.......,,,,.,....-. x ,,,,,.,.,-..' But in the middle of the season we started and played good ball the rest of the season. In the middle of the season we played Junction City B team and defeated them 45 to 42. Another team that was high in the league was Longford and we defeated them 44 to 43. The Panthers string of victories was increased during the middle part of the season. The big game of the season was with Wakefield, February 1. The game started ouft with Milford making the 'first basket of the ball game. The Panthers were in the- lead most of the time, leading at the half Z1 to 13. The second half the Wakefield players got off to a good start and broke the lead Milford had built up the first half. ' In the final minutes of the game Wakefield pulled out in front, but the last few seconds Milford scored and tied the game up at 32 to 32. Coach-Harold Spear Baseball-Basketball When the overtime started Wakefield was given a free throw and they made it, and that made the score 33 to 32 in favor of Wakefield. Then it was Milfords ,ball out and Milford made afield goal to put them in the lead 34 to 33. Wakefield made one more attempt to get another basket but was un- in successful in doing so. Milford recovered the ball and stalled the remaining of the game. r In the county tournament we played Longford the first night and were defeated 46 to 38. In the second game ' we beat Morganville by a score of 46 to 39. We took third place in the county tournament. F. Nelson, M. Jones, B. Johnston, R. Head. R. Head Girls' Team Left to right: E. On The Air r , Early in January, Arthur Cowen, of KICK asked us to have a 30 minute program on the air, February 8, at 2:30. There were many surprised looks when the pupils found the 'wonderful news on the study hall black board. Looking from one to another they replied, Just think, on the . ll - air . - ' It was decided from the beginning that it would be all music. The music students then filed into the music room, the doors were closed, and the work began. Everyone asked what was going to be on their program, The answer was. Listen in on KJCK at 2:30, February 8 . On February 8, 16 of Milford's High School students piled into cars and were off to Junction City. A They all met at the stairway leading up to KJCK and went up to the e studio together. ' , At 2:30 sharp Mr. Cowen introduced us to the radio audience and we were at last On The Air . Merrill Jones, who was our first announcer introduced the following: 'On the road to Mandalay' - Mixed ensemble 'l'll always Love You' - Trumpet solo - Roy Head I I 'Stouthearted Men - Boys Sextet Days of Youth 'Moonglow' - Saxophone solo - Buford Miller 'Spanish Gypsy Dance' - Piano solo - Ruth Roether H Q At this point we have a new announcer. Roy Head takes over the 'mike', and intro- duced the latter part of the program, which consists of: Making Love Ukulele Style - Trumpet solo - Larry Jones I - - I 'Softly As In a Morning Sunrise -L Girls glee club When Day ls Done 'Maple Leaf Rag' - Trombone solo - Merrill Jones 'Make'Be1ieve' - Vocal solo - Roberta Mellinger 'Oklahoma' - Mixed ensemble V This completed our radio program, Everyone 'thought it a very interesting ex- perience. We wouldn't mind if we could doit again sometime. K ayettes Front row: V. Stevens, C. Bentz. . H. Kidd, E. Stevens, D. Walters. Back row: A. Johnston, R. Mallinger, R. Roether, G. Babb, Mrs. Jones. The Kansas Association for Youth is an organization for both Junior and Senior high school boys and girls. They are known as the Kayettes and the boys as 'the Kays The basic philosophy of the organization is to teach the members, through regular programs, service projects and recreational activities, the positive approach of life. We have one-half hour a week for each meeting. These are planned in advance .V On November 7-8, Charlotte Bentz , Velma Stevens, Roberta Mellinger, and Mrs. .Tones attended a Kay-Kayette conference at Council Grove. The first day began with registration and was followed by a general session and party. The day was started with meditations and was followed by discussion groups, general session, luncheon and recognition service. Ruth Roethe and Roberta Mellinger were the delegates sent to summer camp which was at Arkansas City. The purpose of the camp is 'to develop leaders. lunior Play i Front row: Darlene Walter, Helen Kidd, Ruth Roether, Charlotte Bentz, Roberta Mellinger, Elsie Stevens. Back row: William Davies, Roy Head, Ron Head, Tim Puck, Larry Denver. Meet the Folks The Junior class presented this play, December 13 at 8:00 P.M. James Smith, a teenager, was about to give his first public speech and about to don his first tuxedo. His suit arrived - it was too large - and he got a terrible' sore throat. The maid took pity on suffering James and gave him advice on impressing the new girl. James big moments really boomed when the vice-president got up and gave the same speech he was to give. A free - for - all fight was started then because James was so embarrassed. But Pa and Ma returned just in time to prevent a call for the riot squad. It all ended well when the boys learned the new girl was engaged anyway Freshmen Initiation ' Candyf Greeni Shoeshinef These sounds were echoing all over the school house September 15. The candy and gum was especially good because it was all free. Those shoeshines looked betterthan some that cost 154. Darlene was especially careful about polishing shoes, because she was to rub any polish that got on the floor off with her nose. ' Expert dietitians tell us you need at least l quart of milk daily. Glena must have been reading such because she came dressed in a baby cap, baby dress, and carrying a bottle filled- with milk. I guess there's more than one way to get a man. Anna mustihave thought she had a good excuse. Listen to thisi She came dressed as Daisy Mae, barefooted, a short skirt, and an off the shoulder blouse completed her costume. I don't know just why she chased Larry all over the school house. Was it his good looks or his Lil' Abner costume? Larry looked very quaint dressed as Lil' Abner. Oh yesf, The most interesting thing took place. Some kids told me they glanced around outside and saw Anna deliberately chasing poor Larry up a light pole. Wasn't that mean of her? One of the Freshmen must have thought it was .Tuly 4, or around there. Darlene came in shorts and a skirt made from bathtowels, ohf yes, of course, terry-cloth. Her face looked awfully sunburned. We had a very interesting hardball game with Green that afternoon, The Freshmen seemed not too interested in the game that day. Maybe it was just too cold to be - outside. That evening the Freshmen came up to the high school Wearing those same old clothes. Glena and Larry sang a very beautiful duet. The harmony and rhythm was simply devine. Anna gave us a very interesting technique of drying after taking a bath. The potato rolling contest proved to be most graceful, Larry Jones finished first. This was pure luck because the girls were doing much better than the boys. Next came the cracker- eating contest. My, what fmanners for high school pupi1s.' But I suppose it wasn't bad manners just good crackers. Larry the fresh thing, even let out a whistle. My mistake again. l just found out the first one done with the ' crackers was to whistle. The Sophomores took over from here and served refreshments. They furnished transportation to Junction City, where we went to a show. While at the show we saw many interesting sights, if you know what I mean. Thanking the Freshmen and Sophomores again.
