N The l 957 Mil esfone Published by The Senior Class of Milford Mill High School Balfimore, Maryland ' This is Milford ,,,'Q1,'iflm V. ,if . . . at the beginning of a new era. At last, with the transfer of seventh and eighth gradcs to Sudbrook Junior High, we became a Senior High School. This meant the end of the half-day shifts and the halls so packed that we could hardly move. Of course, their loss presented financial prob- lems, especially to the Student Council. But Milford students helped to minimize this problem by coming through with flying colors in the magazine campaign, making more money than the Senior High has ever done before. All in all, l956-57 has been a good year: our sports teams, dramatics and music groups, and our social functions have provided us with thrilling moments which we shall never forget. On the following pages we will show you, with a few words, and many pictures, Milford Mill, 1957. DEDICATION The 1957 Milestone staff takes great pleasure in dedicat- ing this yearbook to Mr. Kenneth A. Vice. Mr. Vice has given generously of his time and energy for the betterment of our class and our school. He has been our class advisor in both our Junior and Senior years, and was for years the A i'i't'ii chairman of the school assembly program. More than this, however, Mr. Vice has been a friend to whom we could always turn for help or guidance at any time. Mr. Vice, you have been a prime factor in molding our high school, and us. For this we shall always remember you. 4 Table of C onfenfs 26:7 Adminisfrafion, Faculfy G U ET Seniors HW M Underclassmen FEE U , 1 n V7 14 A , 11: Adivifies E1 lib Sporfs OQPN - ff 195 Pahons and Advertisers sf? fl-EI Q I W f fe pl ,I fN 6, I xtvf Udfx MQ if I Q x'i?7i!2 L W4Q5Qf f4 X ri f,.N,??zf X xyij I-.f-.1-141 fx' 1 Adminisfrafion and Faculfy Af K. ,A ,Q J! Each of the six years spent here has left an indelible impression upon our school's history. Both privileges and responsibilities have played an important part. The traditions of the past have mingled with the adaptations to the challenging present. The maior purposes of our institution have been left inviolate. Some of you will fill large places in the world. Others will do smaller but nonetheless essential things for the wel- fare of mankind. As you become men and women, you will look back with fond recollections to the days of the school life spent at Milford Mill. Whether you be in the world of work or in the halls of learning, you will always be representatives of your Alma Mater. Act your part well. Continue to be an honor to the noble purposes which directed your training. May your parents and teachers continue to inspire you to do those things which will be a credit to your home, school, and community. Best wishes for a successful career to everyone of you. GEORGE W. SCHLUDERBERG, Principal Staff To Mr. William T. Ritter, our vice-principal, we express a token of gratitude for the interest and enthusiasm he has always shown throughout our years at Milford Mill. Our vice-principal is always ready with a smile and a cheery hello for everyone. Though his schedule may be heavy with disciplinary problems, morning announcements, and monthly attendance reports, Mr. Ritter is always ready, willing, and able to assist whenever it is at all possible. He is a person that will long be remembered by the class of '57, the classes preceding, and the classes that will follow. Those who know Mr. Albert J. Sgro will speak highly of him as a friend, cr teacher, and an advisor. He is extremely busy carrying out his duties as co-sponsor of the Honor Society, Business Manager of the Milestone and the Mill Wheel, and teaching business law, retail selling, and book- keeping. This year he was appointed Administration Assistant, and in this capacity handles all disciplinary problems in the ninth and twelfth grades. Milford's Guidance Department Mrs. Ruth Rinehart The guidance department is designed to benefit each student at Milford. Advising the students are Mrs. Ruth Rine- hart and Miss Emma Williams, our counselors. They set up aptitude, achievement, and interest test programs, and ad- minister them to the students. Conferences are held with lio Miss Emma Williams students who need help in any phase of the school curri- culum. They give the students valuable assistance in choos- ing courses and subiects. Seniors are aided with informa- tion about scholarships, colleges, and iobs. The Guidance Department is one of the maior assets of our school. Secretaries Our omcc staft includes three of the busiest people in the school. Mrs. Doris Saftron is secretary to Mr. Schluderberg and is also the school treasurer. Mrs. Marguerite Leutner not only acts as the office secretary, but also organizes all announcements for the day. The guidance secretary, Mrs. Gladys Hudgins, prepares the reports for each student in the school. Together they keep the school operating smooth- ly and efticiently. 2 1 i L A'Hen'I'ion all homerooms! Mr. Rii- fer begins a Milford day. My Marks! Marks! Marks! She was born in Bremen, Germany and has a brother and a sister. At her school, Obersohule Am Waller- ring, she took French, English, and Latin. When she returns to Germany, she will have completed thirteen years of school. Ricky has continued her studies in Latin this year while at Milford, as well as studying United States history and literature. Elected vice president of her homeroom, 12-2, Ricky also belonged to the United Nations Club and the School Spirit Committee. When she was asked about her impression of Milford, Ricky stated: I think it's a won- derful school. The kids, so far as l know them, are awfully nice. Next year Ricky will take an examination before graduation in Germany, and then, she plans to study FOREIGN EXCHANGE Understanding is the keyword to whole- some relationships, In the modern age in which we live, it is essential for countries to understand each other. This being true, what better way is there of building trust and friendship than through the youth? This theory has been given life in the form of a foreign exchange program. This pro- gram uses, as its foundation, the schools of the nation. This year, Milford has taken up the cause and is doing its part to strengthen the bonds of international un- derstanding and bring about world peace. ln the fall of 1955, a committee headed by Judy Nussbaum and sponsored by Miss Mary Childs, formulated the Foreign Ex- change Program for this year. Since this was a new venture in our school, it aroused the interest and cooperation of the faculty, the student body, and the community. medicine. if Franco Millich is from Alessandria, Italy. He has four brothers and one sister. When he returns to his native Italy, he will be confronted with two more years of school at Liceo Scientifico. These two years will complete his total of thirteen years schooling, after which he will go on to the Aeronautical Academy. Subiects that he will take next year and the year after include: psychology, philosophy, Greek, and English. While in Milford, he has taken French and United States History and literature. The varsity soccer team gained a valuable player when Franco ioined its ranks. He was also elected vice-president of his homeroom, T2-'l. Franco was a member of the radio club this year as well. When asked if he liked Milford, he replied, Yes, of course I like Milford. In answer to the question about the United States, his reply was: A great, marvelous, wonderful country. lt's iust like you expect to find it. 49 Done mosf for fhe school Mosf inlelleclual Mosf likely fo succeed r Senior so l A Nelson Macken. The JV did equally well this season by ending with a total of five wins and three losses. Due to the fact that last year's Varsity volleyball team consisted of all seniors, we had no holdovers for our team this year. This would be quite a disadvantage to almost any team, but nevertheless, our team enjoyed a successful season. Both varsity and J.V, were ably coached by Miss Jean Shelley. 6 Boffom row: C. Espey, S. Becker: G No yearbook is the work of an individual, or even a small group. There have been many hands in the Milestone pot, all working for the same result: a good book. We hope that we have achieved this aim. lt is impossible to individually thank everyone who has helped me to put this book together. l would, however, like to extend my thanks to my committee chairmen, and to their committees, and to my officers, Tammie Siegel, June White, and Sally Ferguson. l would also like to thank Mr. Schluderberg and the entire faculty not only for their constant willingness to help us wherever posssible, but also for giving us classtime to work on the book. Also, many thanks to Mr. Sidney Schultz of H. G. Roebuck and Son, Inc., for his ever-available help and constructive criticism, and to Mr. Albert Sgro, who has kept a stern but necesssary eye over our finances. Special thanks is due to those outside the school who have helped us so much: our patrons and advertisers, and those parents at whose homes we held our rallies. Above all, however, I wish to thank. our sponsor, Mrs. Eunice Waber, who has given so much of her own time and energy to the Milestone, and without w-hom we could not hope to turn out such a book. Thank you again, HOWARD RUBIN, Editor-in-chief 124 X..--Y Our Adverfisers and Pafrons THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT Congrcltulates THE GRADUATING CLASS 'I 2-3 We, the graduating class of 1957, wish to express our appreciation and many thanks to our faculty and our counselors who have helped us so greatly in this phase of our lives and our education.
