Editor-Thomas Watt Assistant Editor-Virginia Ritchie V Principal-Herbert French ice-principal--Richard Herman Title Page Foreword Faculty School Seniors Town Activities Sports Advertisements gdfbwdftd We as a staff feel that many people have taken for granted the beauty created in our town by the Wepawaug River. More- over they have, perhaps, never considered the influence the river had on the settlement of Milford. Our founders selected this spot because the river provided waterpower and built a mill on a ford in the Wepawaug, thus giving the town its name Milford The river was named after the Wepawaug Indian tribe from which the site was purchased. This book has been named after the river in an attempt to show that the high school reflects and influences the life in Milford, as does the river. We hope, then, to make this edition of the Yearbook a true picture of the life and times of the senior class of Milford High School in its relationship to the town. Therefore we have chosen the river itself as our theme - attempting to move our townspeople to a reappreciation of the beautiful setting the river has made for many buildings in town, the high school included, and an acknowledgment of the influence upon our lives socially, economically and historically that the river has exerted. The Wepawaug truly runs through our lives. 2 -. un! www D 1 ' 3--gb: 5 fi rj 5 md 416 J' 1 , 'xc , 1 sk, K. V x Ygpk? I talk.. We hope, then, to make this edition of the Yearbook a true picture of the life and times of the senior class of Milford High School in its relationship to the town, Therefore we have chosen the river itself as our theme - attempting to move our townspeople to a reappreciation of the beautiful setting the river has made for many buildings in town, the high school included, and an acknowledgment of the influence upon our lives socially, economically and historically that the river has exerted. The Wepawaug truly runs through our lives. 2 I 1' mga, fig 9 J ' - WJ . 4 Q k ' I 1 H 'SUQ . '. ew R pil + E' .V 34. Working together we have put on pep rallies, talent assemblies, and informal dances. Our junior and senior plays, Meet Me In St. Louis, and Mrs. McThing and the short-lived, but long pre- pared for night of the junior prom, Moonlight and Magnolias will always stand out in our minds as some of our most pleasant memories. Years from now we shall be pointing with pride to our record in sports. But let us remember the bad days, too - when it looked like the revolving stage wasn't going to work out for the play, Thanksgiving day when, after a wonderful season, our great football team was de- feated by our arch-rival, Stratford. It was on days like that, that we learned the real lesson of high school and shouldered the difficult task of growing up. And so as graduates, we thank sincerely the teach- ers and administrators whose patience and under- standing helped us through these four years. As your president, I hope that our accomplishments in future MITCHELL KOT years will prove us worthy of their hopes. May success and happiness be with you always. Iacquelyn Roberts Who once has had a friend has found The link 'twixt mortal and divine, Though now he sleeps in hallowed ground He lives in memory's sacred shrine, And there he freely moves about, A spirit that has quit the clay, And in the times of stress and doubt Sustains his friend throughout the day. No friend we love can ever die, The outward form but disappears, I know that all my friends are nigh Whenever I am moved to tears. And when my strength and hope are gone, The friends, no more, that once I knew, Return to cheer and urge me on just as they always used to do. They whisper to me in the dark Kind words of counsel and of cheerg When hope has flickered to a spark I feel their gentle spirits near. And Oh! because of them I strive With all the strength that I can call, To keep their friendship still alive And to be worthy of them all. Death does not end our friendships trueg We all are debtors to the dead, There, wait on everything we do The splendid souls who've gone ahead. To them I hold that we are bound By double pledges to be fine. Who once has had a friend has found The link 'twixt mortal and divine. EDGAR A. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NUTMEG BOYS' U AND LAUREL GIRLS' STATE This year six junior boys and two iunior girls were chosen to attend Nutmeg Boys' and Laurel Girls' State. The representatives were chosen on the basis of leadership, service, and scholarship. Boys' and Girls' State are leadership schools which have as their objectives to develop leadership, to teach the fundamentals of our form of govern- ment, to make Boys' and Girls' State a laboratory of practical political scienceg to make State a functional citizenship program. Besides this fine opportunity and rewarding experi- ence, Milford was fortunate to have Ken Hawkins elected as treasurer of Boys' State. The National Honor Society is a group of students who have become eligible by achieving consistently good grades for a year and a half before election into the society, and also while they are members. The qualities, other than scholarship that must be maintained by the student are leadership, service, and character. The Honor Society holds meetings periodically to attend to any current business. The elected officers are Richard Tucker, president, Edith Chamberlain, vice presidentg and Elaine Kusako, secretary, and the faculty advisor is Miss Ruth Doe. Competent officers, Neva Anderson, presidentg Carol McLaren, secretary, and Marilynn Miller, treasurerg have also contributed much for the benefit of the organization. Two great advancements were accomplished this year. One of these was a symposium, the first of its kind to be conducted in any high school in the state. Girls from many schools throughout the state had a chance to meet each other and to exchange their knowledge of dance technique. The second was a concert pre- sented by our own club. The highlight of this con- cert was a twenty minute modern ballet. Through this organization the members are able to express their ideas in dance by creative movement and to attain grace and poise. The students work dili- gently, and all thoroughly enjoy the activities of the club. CHRISTMAS ASSEMBLY Each year the seniors are responsible for presenting the Christmas Assembly, depict- ing the birth of Christ. This is done in pageant form with music provided by the choirs. Mrs. Beale served as the director and did her usual fine job. In this scene, the shep- herds come to pay tribute to the Babe. Here, the wisemen are visiting the man- ger where the child Jesus lay. Perhaps the thoughts of the actors are not too far away from that eve in Bethlehem. It would be hard to pick an individual who has contributed more to our talent assemblies than Charlie Potkay. He not only has fascinated audiences with his dancing, but he is also an ac- complished musician and com- poser. Here Charlie is caught in one of his many dance routines. . Senior Talent Assembly The class of 1957 was very fortunate to have a great deal of talent within it. Each assembly that we sponsored was a great success. Here we see four of our more talented members perform- ing with the grace and poise that is the rule for success. On stage -Serena McKenna, Judy Mon- tano, Jackie Cabot, and Mimi Brown. ..,k . Six Milford boys attended the state meet and one was selected to go to the New England meet. Under the leadership of co-captains Ray Hollworth and Charlie Potkay this year's team hopes to better last season's record. Emil Usinger threw the javelin 176 feet to establish a new school record. He also placed third in the New England meet. With such students returning again this year, we look forward to a successful season. The golf team had a very successful season finishing with a 7-4-1 record. This qualified them for the state tournament in which they finished eleventh out of twenty teams. Under the skillful coaching of Mr. Auran Fox, the boys turned in fine performances throughout the year, with Pete Aldo lowest scorer of the season, and turning in a 75 at the Mill River Country Club. The lowest gross for the team was in the match against Roger Ludlowe at the Wepawaug Country Club when they finished with 320, figuring to an average score of 80. This year looks quite promising with Ragaini and Doyle returning after a long summer of practice. THE STRATFORD MATCH Ziff' Q! limi! Il.
