THE CRUISE OF '54 It was a clear day, the sun high in the sky as twenty-nine young people hurried to get aboard the big ship named Milford High School. The pier was very crowded and we had to push our way through. This was the big day. We were going to start our four-year cruise and our desti- nation was Port Graduation. The date was September 1, 1950, as the big ship began its long journey. Being very nervous and excited by not knowing much about this or where we were to go, we all stayed very close together. We were on board only a short time before we were introduced to other groups of sailors, the faculty, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Our officers for that year were: Patten LeCount, Captain: Shirley Slabaugh, First Mate: Shirley Troup, Second Mate: Beatrice Hochstetler, Third Mate, and Mr. Mishler was our Pilot. During our journey, four of our members joined other crews: namely, Betty Walton, Robert Beatty, Richard Denny and Don Fisher. When the ship came to dock on May 23, we were all ready to be back home again, but Mr. Weisser, our Fireman, started to fire up again. Three months later we were ready to be back together on Sophomore Harbor to start the second year of our voyage. The officers for this year were: Captain, Shirley Troup: First Mate, Earl Kammererg Second Mate, Shirley Kegebeing Third Mate, Patten Le- Count, and Pilot, Mr. Naugle. Elsie Bell joined to sail with us for the year. However, Allen Gerber fell overboard and was rescued by a fishing party who took him to shore. Then one nice day we heard the cry Land Ho and everyone was very quick to pack up his things and hurry for the dock. We were glad to be back again but it meant that one more year of our glorious voyage had come to an end. Soon it was September and we were to begin the third year of our journey. As we greeted all our friends again we discovered that Beatrice Hochsteller and Elsie Bell did not come along with the rest of the crew. Frank Grove was Captain and Shirley Troup, First Mateg Shirley Hollar, Second Mate: Shirley Kegebein, Third Mate, and Pilot, Mr. Rohn. Mis- tress, Mrs. Williams. Soon another ship came alongside of our ship and Patten LeCount, Don Kinney, Bill Bess, Miriam Hollar, and Carl Thomas left us to join them. One of the Sailors sighted land a few days later and we stopped on an island called Christmas, for a short vacation. Here we received many wonderful things. The vacation didn't last very long and we were soon on our way sailing back into the harbor again. We set sail from our Senior Harbor last August 28 with a crew of 20, but before long we saw an SOS from another ship and a new member, namely Pauline Guerra, boarded. The officers were: Captain, Earl Kam- mererg First Mate, Bob Wiseg Second Mate, Shirley Kegebeing Third Mate, Shirley Troup, and Pilot, Mr. Young. A social event was planned and the play For Pop's Sake was presented. Later a party was held and our class rings were given as special favors to each member. At Christmas our pictures arrived to cause a bit of excitement on board. The most ex- citement of all was caused when Commencement Day was nearing. The stage was decorated with red roses and everyone was dressed in blue and white, our class colors. The '54 edition of the Trojanette is being pub- lished and from it we hope to be able to remember our wonderful voyage together. The sun is sinking in the west but with our motto well in mind, Forward Ho , we will go on into a brighter tomorrow. We have reached our destination, Port Graduation, and our voyage is ended. S. D. S.
