Richard Bwm C Mag-Donaldi ' K- Dale W'uthrich 1939 - TROJANETTE - 1940 SEKIOR CLASS HISTORY On the bright sunny morning of Sept. 3, 'way back in 1928, forty seven very intelligent looking boys and girls marched shyly into Miss Velma Tusing's room. These boys and girls later became known as the Class of 1940. We liked Miss Tusing so well that we stayed in her room for the rest of the year. When we get as far as Mrs. Hurd's room, Bill Coy and Eliza- beth Orn Joined us. In Hrs. Anglin's room Dale Wuthrich entered our class. In 1954 we returned to our dear Alma later feeling much older and very important. This was to be our first year in the assembly. Weselected Edna Holler as our president. We selected blue and gold as our colors and blue and yellow violets as our class flowers. We chose NForward ever, backward nevern as our motto. At this point Harry Michael joined us in our struggle to get an education. Freshman Class--Alice Grubb and John Bryan entered our class. Frank Beer was our president. Sophomore Class--Eleanor Kuhn, Dorothy Mathews,Wi1lene Rapp and Dick Martin joined us. Mary Hover came beck to stay. John Bryan was elected president. Junior Class--Doris Galvin and Leona Poe became members of our class, and Harry Michael was president. Senior Class-Our fourth and final year of high school finds Qur class with two new members, Edwin Sprunger and Warren Dau- sman. John Bryan was again elected as head of our class. Cur senior year has been a very busy one, and now as we prepare to leave M. H. S. We are reminded of the good times we have had with our fellow students and underclassmen. We are grateful to the faculty for so patiently assisting us in preparing our fu- tUl'9 life. -I v'v'W'-'1 Q1'!l -- I Wi ' 'Q If rt , .4 , I ' 1 O If ' V-.I -I L l -,V JN I1 -F I ' 'Q F '..1' ff-- 'L -. -' 5 Q -1 Q 1, f -'LU' , .P w W Ai Y- 2: f' 71'g fl ...P . -L if- ' , -.. sv ' I JJ! GRADUATION Gone are the days of equation, translations, Verbs, and infinitives, Caesar and Rome, Gone are those days when we felt so mistreated 'Cause evenings found us o'er text books, at home. New that the time of departure has reached us, New that we come to that long-looked-for day, New when we find we can Hskip schoolu forever, We have a sudden, deep yearning to stay. We realize that we've liked school immensely Even when algebra puzzled us most, We are quite proud of our knowledge of grammar, Studies we dreaded, now cause us to boast. Yes, we are leaving, and we feel reluctant. Our teachers have been such a help to us, too. Our great Milford High School, we honor, salute you! Our fair Milford High School, wo'ro grateful to you! ------Mary Helen Stuckman Q 1939 - TROJANETTE - 1940 CLASS WILL We, the class of l94O, being of sound mind and possessing all our mental faculties, do bequeath: I To the Juniors, our ability to get along with Mr. Young in oivics class. f To the Sophomores, our ability to stay out of the detention room. In the eighth grade we became restless Cdue to the same old routine workl. Cur president, Hilda Dippon, seeing that some- thing had to be done about it, gave us a party at her home. Games and refreshments were enjoyed by all. Freshmen!! How we had looked forward so long to really being in high school and showing those dignified seniors that we were really growing up at last. This year we enjoyed a picnic at the home of Betty Philips, a treasure hunt at Lorabel Ferverda's, and a bingo party at Mary Clavson's. During our sophomore year of school, to our disaypointment, we had several memhers withdraw from our class. Our class party was held in the gymnasium--volley ball, bingo, and dancing were enjoyed. Slaving Juniors!!! Don't misinterpret the title for when they call us that they don't have reference to books. This year we met with a defeat in the Professor Quiz Contest with the seniors. We presented for our Junior Class Play a three-act comedy, HHe Landed from Londonn, directed ty Miss Gatke, our class sponsor. We are try- ing to make our reception something the seniors and faculty will not forget. That's how we get the name HSlaving Juniorsu. We now have 27 members in our class and we hope we have that number when we graduate next spring. A ' ms'--1 'diff 1 4.. . A Q, W. ' f A ' -I , Wy?-Nsgff. . From its ranks have come man out- standing boys' quartets, girls' quartets, and at one time a girls' sextet which sang four consecutive summers at Winona Lake. It has presented nine operettas, one cantata, and twenty-one concerts, and in addition has assisted at several events given by the school, churches, and other organizations. It usually has about forty members. BAND The present enrollment of the band is forty members and four baton twirlers. There is also an equal number of begin- 'DGTSQ The band plays at all home basket ball games. On an aver- age of three or four games a year the band performs novel marching maneuvers besides forming letters of the visiting team and home team. They played and marched at the Warsaw Fair and also gave a concert at Leesburg to dedicate the new gymnasium. In the past year the band has given two concerts: one, the last of November, and the other, the first of March. The band is especially proud of their new uniforms that were purchased in the spring of 1939, for thirty-nine mem- bers and one drum major. Last summer the band continued their study throughout the summer months with private instructions and rehearsals each week. They gave a concert each Wednesday night of the week for ten weeks. Plans are being made to continue this summer. Last year Edna Hollar won first division in the National Piano Contest. This year there are six solo contestants en- tering the solo contests at Berne, Indiana. The band is also entering the Class C Division Contest, April 20th, at Hunt- ington. Accompanied by Mr. Ralston, we visited the Field's Museum and Shedd's Aquarium. In the sophomore year we had the privilege of holding a Hallowe'en party at the old gravelpit near the home of Opal Zimmerman. As sophomores we were quite elated over the play entitled NThe Little Wifen, which we presented as an assem- bly program under the direction of Mr. Judkins. In the junior year the Class of '40 held a gift exchange in the commercial room. While many outstanding gifts were received many were not pp practical! On March 24, under the direction of Mr. Hiatt, we enjoyed a class party in the gym. HIGH SCHOOL PARTY 1940 The Milford High School Party was held Friday evening March 15, with about 20 from each class present. Contests were held to determine who had the biggest appetite in high school and who had the largest mouth. Ren Clark and John Bryan had the largest appetite and the largest mouth, respect- ively. Everyone present enjoyed playing HHappy is the Farmern NThree Deepu, and HMusical Chairn. A balloon contest and sev- eral tug-of-war contests were held between classes. Delicious refreshments were served under the direction of Miss Gatke. JUNIOR-SENIOR RECEPTION 1959 The juniors entertained the seniors Tuesday, April 25, 1959 at the Tavern Hotel at Lake Wawasee at 6:00 P. M. The tables were decorated with red and white carnations. The program consisted of music by the junior sextetg welcome by the junior class president, Harry Michaelg response by the senior class president, John Vanderveer, Jr.g music by the clarinet triog and a vocal solo, Hwaterboyn by Richard ihrtin. John Bryan acted as toastmaster and the speaker of the evening was Miss McLaughlin, who gave a talk on HThis and Thatu. Later all en- joyed HThe Three Musketeersuat the Pickwick Theatre. SCHOOL EXHIBIT 1939 The school exhibit was held again this year to display the work of the students. In the typing room typing tests were being given. Physics experiments were displayed in the sci- ence room. After all had been through the rooms, they gather- ed in the gymnasium for an athletic exhibition by the physi- cal training classes, and application of bandages by the safe- ty class. A puppet show, HCinderellaN, by the eighth grade art class concluded the exhibit. 1.1. . 25,1 .9 .55-i SUSIE - ff ! -L: i. ulruQQQy1gy1UU3Q 1M1 GENEALOGY 9 7 7 2 O2 x ., . ,W TQ M5 9MI-IS Y 3? 2. This proved to be one of the close games of the season, the score being tied at the half. The last half was played on a nip and tuck basis, but as Mentone contributed the last field goal, they took the decision. Dec. 1--The Trojans registered a thrilling win over Kew Paris. The fans were on their feet and shouting most of the game. The playing ability of both teams was outstanding, but Milford was able to pull the game out of the fire with only thirty seconds left to play on a basket by Coy. Jan. 12--The tragic game of the season was the Milford-Syracuse game played at Milford. After holding a 24 to 17 lead on Syra- cuse at the half, the Trojans experiences two accidents, both of which proved fatal to Milford's victory. Kaiser was knocked out and Bryan's knee injury forced him out of the game at the half. Jan. 26--The Trojans pulled themselves out of a bad slump by de- feating a powerful Wakarusa team. This was the first time that a Milford team has ever won a game from Wakarusa at Wakarusa. Milford showed great power throughout the season when they played teams that were rated as better than themselves. Sidney Mentone Sectional Champions 1939 - TROJANETTE - 1940 REWARDS OF ATHLETICS When a game is played for the sheer fun of playing itz when it is played whole heartedly and with abandonment, the physi- cal, mental and social rewards are almost beyond calculation. Among the personal rewards of faithful athletic competition there are some that are pleasant, perhaps, but incidental, and there are others that are certain. There is an intense perso- nal satisfaction in a clean victory, and the feeling of com- plete joy and satisfaction that comes when we know the cheer- ing of the crowd is in honest and heartfelt admiration, can hardly be surpassed. There are, of course, a great many indi- viduals who, by lack of training or by disinclination, have no love for the finer things of life. They are contest with blunted or discolored rewards. Nevertheless, if athletic com- petition is to stay in our national life we must look again to the fine, clean feeling that comes with a victory honor- ably and humbly won. Much the same feeling may go with a de- feat honorably suffered. The personal rewards that are earned by hard ing that are more essential are the ones play, painful bumps, and heart-break- defeats. But there is also a satisfaction that comes from knowing that one's habits of cool-headedness, fair play, per- severance, and sportsmanship have stood the test of actual combat. No man knows what he is really worth until he has faced a situation that will bring out of him every capacity he has. It is easy to weaken under pain and fatigue, to re- taliate in anger and to slump under apparent defeat. There is no other place, save in war, where a man may learn the les- son ing end has can of responding to fatigue by the will to win, of respond- to defeat by a determination to play hard to the bitter The comfort that comes to anyone when he knows that he conquered pain, fatigue, and defeat is a feeling that he carry over into all his later life. A healthy society cannot exist on weak, unfair, and untrained individua-lS. ----Daniel Perry J 11. 4 1?J'k'1 .K flf5i r1Lfl ' 54.1123 1: W1'7L11'ff!4'.- 35' 1 .f 5la 11 , '91 ,J Eilliill-1 ,'1 1.
