Contrary to many art1cles wrrtten Dr Bestor says that our school system IS not lacklng because there lS not enough money spent on 1t but because ot the way 1n whlch the money IS used Yes towns and Cll1GS bu1ld schools and h1re teachers but do these schools and teachers offer the materlal necessary for a good and complete educat1on? However 1t must be mentloned that ln some cases the mate r1al 1S offered but the students w1ll not accept 1t No matter how good a school system lS 1t cannot succeed 1n 1ts purpose of edu cat1on unless the students are w1ll1ng to learn Dr Bestor calls the present system a waste ot t1me and students bra1ns and advocates a return to the three R s Perhaps to some ot you th1s seems l1ke just an arttcle wrltten by an old fash1oned educator who thlnks school should be yust work But such an 1dea 1S wrong Untll I read Dr Besto s art1cle I hadnt real1zed what a problem we are tacmg Nearly one halt ot our schools offer no courses ln phystcs one quarter offer no geometry one quarter offer nelther physlcs nor chemlstry s1nce 1900 the percentage ot hlgh school students talang sctence has dropped th1rty percent and ot those takmg math th1rty one percent' The mtellectual educat1on that was once deemed so 1m portant has now almost become secondary to a soc1al educat1on How can the young people ot today the c1t1zens ot tomor row acqu1re the best educat1on under such c1rcumstances'P Yet these ctrcumstances GXIST and 1t 1S from such clrcumstances that we are tryrng to obta1n the future eng1neers and sc1ent1sts and protesslonal men and women that our country so v1tally needs It such school systems ex1st how can we hope to br1ng the educat1onal level ot the Unlted States up to the standards 1t should meet? Yes ton1ght IS graduatlon n1ght tor us and for many other students from schools 1n many c1t1es and states As we graduate we leave the world of ready made dec1s1ons and enter a world where we must make our own dec1s1ons both tor ourselves as 1nd1v1duals and tor our soc1ety as c1t1zens Th1s educat1on prob lem w1ll be ours to solve Such a respons1b1l1ty lS 1ndeed grave The way ln wh1ch th1s problem 1S solved w1ll determ1ne whether our natlon w1ll become a country of 1ust average quahty and thus lose 1t s power and d1gn1ty, or whether 1t w1ll become a country of hlgh standards wrth an educated populatton and thus reta1n the place ot honor 1t now holds , . , .
