The School year, 1975-76, makes a milestone in our lives. It is our nation's 200th birthday! And, despite the fact that the uAmerican Dreamu our forefathers had may still be unfulfilled, the birthday is one to be proud of. It is also one to meaningfully acknowledge. Think about it. Not for 100 years have the citizens of the United States 9- high school students included -- had the opportunity to witness and participate in a historical event of this magnitude. Not for another 100 years will we get a chance. Given this once-in-a-century opportunity, it makes sense that we utilize it. Certainly, we can't afford to be among the few who look back -- a decade or two from now -- and reminisce on the chance they let pass by. i Most of us -- in school and out -- will be observing our nation's 200th birthday in some way or another. We may celebrate it or we may commorate it. And, while the latter may have more lasting effects than the former, both will serve worthwhile purposes. The majority of the people in this country will probably see the bicentennial as a celebration. They'll deck themselves, their homes, their automobiles in red, white and blue, and perhaps they'll buy a new flag to fly from their porches. Their contribution to this historical event will be less meaningful than it might be: yet, if it only serves to stimulate awareness of the event that we're celebrating it, too, will be doing a job. It is our hope that this annual will serve two purposes: to record the events of this memorable school year, and to be a lasting reminder of the 200th birthday of this great country, the United States of America.
