.i STA'E CHAMPS The following is an editorial by Mr. John Adams, member of the Milford School Board. THE GREATEST RIP OFF I've been party to what I can say is the most disgusting incident involving high school sports I've ever been associated with. On October 18, the MHS Cross Country Team won the State Class C Championship. They returned to a welcoming town and school that was proud of their great accomplishment. Their first place trophy was presented to the you finished third, there's a mistake in the scoring that we just caught. Send back your trophy, and try to explain it to your town, school, in the best way you can.u JUST LIKE THAT..The best way you gloss it over, it's no big thing to a state championship. Coach Jorgensen told poorest organized meet at-- no place cards were The state now claims no protest fr m the teams can- win the been me it was he'd ever issued. there had Milford beat-- been that a Milford runner that finished 23rd, the state claims finished 53rd...now this is very interesting considering the fact that there were Milford people at the meet taking as the Milford runners finished. As one of our runners finished 20th, the man taking the Pictures said he barely had time to turn E5 the film to get the next MHS boy. Hardly the procedure you'd eXPeCt S if 30 runners were inbetween the two Milford boys. The MHS b0Y who finished 23rd, or 53rd, said U C pictures R O of him, and he wasn't far behind. he could see the MHS runner ahead. cj I coached cross country for seven years and if a runner in a two 'ILT mile race is close to another at the finish, he is not 30 places INJ behind him. The trophy was awarded, the T news media had the results-- Milford won. If it took all R afternoon to find this out--then it was the final decision. The ramifications of this are manyisf If this reversal stands, the biggest loser is the cross country program and the athletes who worked so hard to win state--and did--then to have it taken away. If Milford had been named third that day, fine: they weren't--they were the champs. Why did it take two weeks to find this supposed error? A protest had been made by MHS officials, it was turned down. Don't school, celebrations were held, a sign was worry! Pioneers' Youve Still Number even erected to proclaim the championship. On Oct. 30, Coach Jorgensen received a call from the State Athletic Association and was told, NYou didn't win the championship, One in the eyes of the people of the area and you will always be.
