H. S. this year. The two mile team, consisting of Peters, Williams, Jones and Branstetter, in the order, won four of the trophies shown on the preceding page, and placed X fifth at the Class B State Outdoor meet in Des Moines. ' The medley team, made of Jones, Radosevich, Naatjes and Branstetter, in that order, won four trophies also, besides partici- pating in the State meet. Peters also represented the Pioneers in the open 440. We can be proud of these boys and the whole track team for the fine job they did this year. N K Ref' 'X Coach Kyle SPORTS Sports at M. H. S. this may be teamed quite successful, what with being co-champions in football, pulling major upsets in basketball, bringing home eight trophies in track and winning many important baseball games last summer. The athletes of M. H. S. have played fair, and have been good sportsmen. As the seniors leave they are hoping the underclassmen will maintain the example set by them. We can all be proud of the seniors that will be missed and the boys that are returning. This mid-winter Concerto consisted of a wide variety of musical numbers ranging from march, classical, to jazz musicg and showed the high quality of the band and their remarkable ability and training by being able to handle the difficult music. The program consisted of a new concert march, Guantanimo , for an opening number, Concertino for Clarinet with Mary Gottsche as clarinet soloist, and Soliloquy for Trumpet with Marsha Pike as soloist. Ronnie Poole added a bit of jazz with a drum solo accompanied by the band of Thundering Drums . Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was the highlight of the evening, played by the band with Mr. Fleming as pi- anist, which brought a near capacity audience to a standing ovation. P Solo and ensemble contest will be held April 24 and 25, and we will take 2l solos and ten ensembles. At large groups contest held May 2, we will play the 2nd movement of the Nordic Symphany ffl by Howard Hanson and the Finale to Symphany ffl of Saint Sains. 45 Jack Jones and Jean Soat Practice, Practice, Practice! This year, many-hours of practice went into the. productions of Handel's Messiah and Haydn's Creation . Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week saw the rehearsal of the sixty member, select-voice concert choir. Joining this group requires an audition, and from it are pulled the ensembles which per- form at an annual contest. Choir projects for the school year 1963 -64 have included Amahl and the Night Visitors and a spring concert entitled Voices in Color . Spring rehearsals also involved the Preparation of several selections to be presented at the large group contest held at Aurelia. Concert choir proudly brought home a Division I rating. At solo and ensemble contest in Akron, which also included instrumental activities, twenty-nine Division I ratings and eighteen Division II ratings were received. The final music presentation of the year combined the talents of the band and choir in a concert aDDropriately entitled the Finale . Contest numbers, including some small groups were given. Vocal soloists were the following: Sharon Gano Toni Peterson Russel Clifford Martin Wallace Keith Branstetter Gary Baumbach Wendell Williams Jean Soat Vickie Wilson Connie Derner Janie Rehse Cheryl Johnson Julie Knudtson Elaine Rensink ff, LIBRARY ASSISTANTS V1 3 ll. hum Seated: Elsie Shortley and Rita Radosevich. Chairman Dave Clark and Secretary Patty Morey On April 10, 1964, the Milford High Schoo Gymnasium was the scene of clutter, noise and gaietyg for on this night the Mock Republican Nominating Convention sponsored by the senior class and guided by Mr. William Rumpel, took place. After many weeks of preparation and one week prior to the Convention devoted to soapbox campaigning for eight major candidates, the big night was upon us. Realistic bunting camouflaged the stage, numerous Red, White and Blues fluttered above the scene of excitement and various cam- paign material disguised the gymnasium and turned it into a lively convention hall. l Attorney General Evan I-Iultman was the key note speaker and delivered a stimulating address to students and adults from Milford and the sur- rounding areas. Although on the first official ballot of the Convention Senator Barry Goldwater appeared to have the lead, Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge pulled ahead and won by a safe margin on the second ballot. The Mock Republican Nominating Con- vention proved to be a tremendous learning process for all participants and onlookers. It's one event that won't soon be forgotten by M. H. S. students.
