The original Town Hall was built by Thomas Silloway and consisted solely of the front end of the present building. The second floor was the actual hall and on the first floor was located the police department, the selectmen ' s offices and other small offices. The lowest floor had jail cells and a public market where farmers could sell their goods ... To bring revenue into the hall, the front rooms of the building were leased out to local merchants. Open town meetings were held in the hall until a growing population made changes necessary. Thus in 1901, Robert Allan Cooke did the ar¬ chitecture for the building as we know it. Addi¬ tions were put on and the second floor hall was enlarged to make open meetings still possible. In 1935, town meetings became representative and continued to be held in the hall until the motion was made to hold meetings at the new High School, built in 1973. Though the Town Hall is not the center for recreation and culture that it had been earlier in the century, it still houses the town offices and stands as a reminder of the local pride and com¬ munity spirit which we celebrate in this bicen¬ tennial year. 6
