Your diligence, guidance, and willing¬ ness to give and give selflessly will remain in our hearts for years to come. T n IN APPRECIATION Mrs. Claudia Doherty and Mr. Russell Ridolfi are the very dedicated advisors to the Oak, Lily, Ivy. To them, the class of 1974 and especially the OLI Staff extends its greatest apprecia¬ tion. They have un¬ selfishly devoted their time, their homes, and many times even their money in helping us to meet the dead¬ lines and to make OLI 74 a worthwhile experience. But even more than this they have been not just year¬ book advisers, they have been our friends with whom we could confide in and share our joys and frustrations. To you, Mrs. Doh¬ erty and Mr. Ridolfi, a very sincere thank you. All your kindness and thoughtfulness will never be forgotten. Mrs. Claudia A. Doherty Mr. Russell A. Ridolfi THANK YOU Among those people we must also thank are the people of the town of Mil¬ ford, who have given us this beautiful new high school to work in. They have extended themselves to give us not just a new high school but the best and most modern facility in the east. You, the townspeople of Milford, have truly made the New Milford High School a center for learning and culture. 6 THE 1974 OAK, LILY IVY COMMITTEE Co-Ed itors-in-Chief June Giacomuzzi Anthony Compagnone, Jr. BUSINESS ADVERTISING — Robert Capuzziello David Colelli, Managers. When you come into the main entrance, you might find it hard to believe that you have en¬ tered a high school. The large planter is the main attraction in the lobby. It is one of the favorite gathering spots for the students. Turning left at the main lobby we enter the academic wing. It is comprised of two floors of identical classrooms. Highlighting the academic wing are the air-con¬ ditioned middle rooms and the rooms which can be opened up to accommodate larger groups. At the far end of these rooms is a stage used for dra¬ matic presentations. Also in the academic wing are two activity rooms. Both these rooms are greatly used. One houses the Scarlet Newspaper, the other our own OLI staff. Di¬ rectly across from the activity rooms are two large office suites. On the first floor is the Housemaster ' s Office and on the second, the Guidance Office. 13 The Media Center is the heart of Milford High School. Students come here for studying and re¬ laxation. A beautiful view of the Media Center is seen from the gallery above. On this gallery, many rooms are located, including the Career Information Center and reading rooms. The doorway off the Media Center leads to the Teacher ' s Resource Center. Here, each teacher has a small area for a desk, and can be found here during free time. Directly outside, in the back of the Media Cen¬ ter, is the courtyard. This is an area of controversy, because it is the location of the Designated Smok¬ ing Area. Covered Walk The area to the right of the main lobby is the Ad¬ ministration Wing. It houses the Principal ' s and Vice-Principal ' s offices. Another very attractive stairway leads to the Community Science Center. The Lecture Hall is lo¬ cated to the left of this stairway. The hall is used for Social Economics and Physics lectures, as well as club meetings. Assistant Principal ' s Office mmjm tm ir i ” ■ ■ M Sif V . Directly above the science wing on the second floor is the business wing. The typing rooms are furnished with new and better equipment! Practice ■ yping Ro Hallway in Business wing A highlight of the area is the Office Simulation Room. The room looks and runs exactly like a busi¬ ness office. This provides the students with a look at the business world. The retail store is the school supply shop. Students can purchase books, pencils, and other necessary items. Office Simulation Room Dat Proc smg pp Data Processing Room 17 A long tiled corridor joins the academic wing of the building with the Occupational wing. This area of the school is an eye-catcher. The equipment used in refrigeration, electronics, carpentry, and air con¬ ditioning is so magnificent, that it allows the stu¬ dents to learn with the most modern materials available. Three sky-lights enhance the beauty of the lobby outside the auditorium and cafeteria. The new for¬ mat of the cafeteria is especially appealing to the students. The addition of the snack bar makes it pos¬ sible for the students to buy hot chocolate, cookies, and donuts during their free mods. It may look similar to the Milford Cinema but it ' s the new David I. Davoren Auditorum. The rows of orange seats face a great stage. This auditorum will be very useful for class assemblies and other school activities where there was never enough room for everyone. Another attraction is the Home Economics Rooms. These rooms are always busy with activity. The Cooking Room is decorated with gold appli¬ ances and wooden cabinets. The Art Room is colorfully arranged with pictures and different art projects. 19 How can one explain the back and lower level of the school? You can say that it houses the Music Department, Phys. Ed. and Child Development, but that wouldn ' t be enough. The chorus and band fi¬ nally have a room big enough to house the instru¬ ments along with the students. And, of course Mil¬ ford High ' s new pride and joy is the huge new Olympic swimming pool, complete with underwater window and spectator ' s gallery. The huge gymnasium is the place where the ac¬ tion is in Phys. Ed. It will be great fun to finally go to a basketball game in our own school. Last but not at all least is a very new project at Milford High. The Child Development Rooms are a place where learn¬ ing is doing. It is where students interested in the pre-school child may experience their behavior and growth. It has been a pleasure to introduce you to the New Milford High School. Though you have only seen a small portion of it , you can surely agree that the New Milford High School is truly a place for growth and learning. 21 t mjybitterness of dm -)jri6 ( er anger, to smile tip base instincts, to ha r the glory and the dre fith in something ever, n do. and so be great. Most beginnings are small and appear trivial and significant, but in reality they are the most important things in life. There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer; No disease that enough love will not heal; No door that enough love will not open; No gulf that enough love will not bridge; No sin that enough love will not redeem . . . be true to others, ana others will be true to you ... If you have lost faith in human nature, discov¬ er where you have gone wrong yourself. There are right beginnings and wrong begin¬ nings, followed by effects of like nature. You can, by careful thought, avoid wrong beginnings and make right beginnings, and so escape evil results and enjoy good results ... It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, How hopeless the outlook. How muddled the tangle. How great the mistake, A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all . . If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world . . . A friend is one who hears both sides of the story, be¬ fore passing judgements. A friend is one who doesn ' t turn against you to gain the friendship of others. If your friend is not any of these, then he or she was never a true friend. You are an amazing grace You are a precious jewel You — special, miraculous unrepeatable, fragile, fearful, tender, lost sparkling, ruby, emerald jewel rainbow splendor Person. joan Baez To behold a whole new day aborning To heed the call of dawn ' s creation To peer inward and see soul To gaze outward and see hope To feel new meaning in the life you know To wonder at the life you are about to know To quest for who you are and what you are to be To find purpose in being To sense challenge in becoming To imagine yourself a star in the heavens To approach the unknown and ask why To confront the unknowable and ask why not To adventure in flights transitory To see eternity in truths immutable To reach To touch To know Don ' t put off being happy ... You can start right in today With a cheerful little world or smile To chase the clouds away ... With a little faith that day by day Things work outright, somehow ... Don ' t put off being happy There ' s no better time than now! 48 I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you because you have done more than any creed could have done to make me good, and more than any fate could have done to make me happy. You have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign. You have done it by being yourself. Perhaps that is what being a friend means, after all. To rejoice at the rise of the sun To seek light where there is dark To seek peace where there is strife To embrace dear values To seize the present To chart the future To find summer in winter, sun in rain To accept your place in today To assert your place in tomorrow To love to live To live to love To laugh To cry To be To become friendship is a vase, which, when it is flawed by heat or violence or acci¬ dent, may as well be broken at once; it can never be trust ed after. The more graceful and ornamental it was, the more clearly do we discern the hopelessness of restoring it to its former state. Coarse stones, if they are fractured, may be cemented again; precious ones never. — Walter Savage Landor — Don ' t cry when it would be just as easy to laugh Don ' t be afraid to express your true feelings Don ' t be ashamed of what you feel For you are the only one who will ever truly know yourself You are the only one who can make your life what you want it to be. In this case, we are not ashamed to speak of our extraordinary work on this edition of the yearbook. Many hours after school were put into the produc¬ tion of our book. Often we stayed until sup¬ pertime in order to meet the next deadline. We were led by two diligent co-editors, June Giacomuzzi and Anthony Compagnone, whose constant nagging and fine leadership kept our OH machine running smoothly. A tribute must be paid to them, for it was our co-editors who backboned the publication. We would also like to thank our advisors, Mr. Russ Ridolfi and Mrs. Claudia Doherty. Without their guidance, our book would never have become a reality. We plan to enter our book into competi¬ tion with other yearbooks throughout the country. Hopefully, you will get as much enjoyment out of our yearbook as we did, putting the time into it. By year ' s end, our 1974 edition of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy has made an everlasting impression on us. It has been a tremendously, worthwhile experience. s t «l e c o I The purpose of the Student Council is to strengthen relations between the student body, the faculty, and the administration. The council works with the students to change and improve school policies. This year such policies as Court Yard smoking privileges and rules and regula¬ tions of the Media Center were studied by the group. Together with the co-operation of the faculty they have helped to make these policies fair and acceptable to all. The Council also attended twb conventions this year. These two events were very helpful to the council in learning how to improve on policy and curriculum. Some of the activities of the year include, the annual Harvest Dance, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, Student Government Day, Student Exchange Day, the awarding of two scolarships, and dona¬ tions to various charities. R I 2U r- hs N SPELLBOUND In October of our Junior Year, we began planning for one of the biggest events of our high school lives — the Junior Prom. The committee, headed by June Giacomuzzi, chose as its loca¬ tion the King Philip Ballroom in Wrenthan. The months went by, with the boys wondering who they should take, and the girls dreaming about their date and that first prom gown. And soon, the favors and programs had been ordered, the tickets had been printed, and the magical date of April 18th approached rapidly. And then, the day. Would it rain? Would everything be in place? Slowly, everyone arrived for the cocktail hour — the girls now beauti¬ fully transformed into ladies; the boys now gallant men with their display of manners. Waiting for our pictures to be taken, there could be heard exclamations of joy and excitement. At last, we entered the hall, with its tables decked in multi-colored dai¬ sies, and the spell was upon us. Jerry Seeco ' s band began to play, and the evening had begun. . . And soon, it was midnight — the end of the prom. The magic spell was broken. But for those hours of preparation, work and anticipation, at the Junior Prom 1973, we truly climbed our Stairway to Heaven. APRIL 18. 197 Imagination rules the world. HOCKEY And a merchant said, Speak to us of Buying and Selling. And he answered and said: To you the earth yields her fruit, and you shall not want if you but know how to fill your hands. It is in exchangingthe gifts of the earth that you shall find abundance and be satisfied. Yet unless the exchange be in love and kindly justice, it will but lead some to greed and others to hunger. When in the market place you toilers of the sea and fields and vineyards meet the weavers and the potters and the gathers of spice, — Invoke then the masterspirit of the earth, to come into your midst and sanctify the scales and the reckoning that weighs value against value. And suffer not the barren-handed to take part in your transactions, who would sell their words for your labour. To such men you should say, Come with us to the field, or go with our brothers to the sea and cast your net; For the land and the sea shall be bountiful to you even as to us. And if there come the singers and the dancers and the flute players buy of their gifts also. For they too are gathers of fruit and frankincense, and that which they bring, though fashioned of dreams, is rai¬ ment and food for your soul. And before you leave the market place, see that no one has gone his way with empty hands. For the master spirit of the earth shall not sleep peacefully upon the wind till the needs of the least of you are satisfied. You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of your¬ self that you truly give. It is clear that, in human society, to one man ' s right there corresponds a duty in all other persons: the duty, namely, of acknowledging and respecting the right in question. For every fundamental human right draws its indestructable moral force from the natural law, which in granting it imposes a corre¬ sponding obligation. Those, therefore, who claim their own rights, yet altogether forget or neglect to carry out their respective duties, are people who build with one hand and destroy with the other. Whoever shares what he has with others, must do it generously; whoever has au¬ thority, must work hard; whoever shows kindness to others, must do it cheerfully .. . Share your belongings with your needy brothers, and open your homes to strangers. 11 , STUDENT ACTIVITIES i ' r , ‘ ° ■Mr ■ Compliments of .Z. WAY CARWASH Milford, Mass.
