Text from Pages 1 - 198 of the 1968 volume:

HIGH MILFORD OAK LILY IVY 1968 MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL Milford, Massachusetts FOREWORD The HAPPINESS of a magical prom night... of Christmas vacation . . . of an A received on a book report ... of hearing the band playing Victory” . . . The MISERY of losing a football game 40 to 0 ... of exam week . . . of having school on the day of the World Series . . . The SECURITY of knowing you won’t be called on in class ... of money in the class treasury ... of knowing that two hundred other students think that 68 is great” . . . All these joys and sorrows have made our four years at Milford High School both rewarding and unforgettable. We sometimes lack the words to express how much these years have meant to us. Perhaps with the help of the simple yet wise cartoon characters pictured on the following pages, we shall become a bit more eloquent in describing our feelings for Milford High School and for the memories which our years here have provided for us. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Administration Personalities . Cornell IN DEDICATION Mrs. Cornell’s concern with every student is exemplified as she discusses a student’s progress during visiting week. To a teacher who has made the study of English thoroughly enjoyable; to a friend whose concern has been with the student as an individual; and to a woman who has always displayed the qualities of a most gracious lady; We the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-eight do hereby dedicate this eighty-fourth edition of the Oak, Lily and Ivy to Mrs. Arthur W. Cornell, with the hope that we shall justify the faith and interest she has shown us. O.L.I. COMMITTEE Editor-in-Chief, Barbara Freedman Literary Editors . Gerard Sweeney Meeting deadlines, settling disputes, making decisions, will all be remembered by the members of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy Committee when we reminisce about the production of our yearbook. Above all we will remember our advisor, Mr. J. Gerard Sweeney, a friend who gave much time and effort to the committee and without whose help this edition could never have been possible. For his invaluable help, the class of 1968 thanks him. HAPPINESS IS not having a class the day before vacation and singing Christmas carols instead. MISERY IS five tests in one day and an assembly during study period. SECURITY IS being called to the principal’s office and knowing that you didn’t do anything wrong. Once Upon Four Years... Once upon four years a group of more than two hundred frightened young students en¬ tered a formidable looking granite building and were told that they would spend four years there. Once the students had accus¬ tomed themselves to the surroundings they found it wasn’t that bad after all. Their time was spent making new friends, learning new things, and making the acquaintance of a group of inhabitants called the administra¬ tion who spent their time in this region help¬ ing all students who passed through this en¬ chanted land. Ruling in this land was Principal Paul F. Raftery, a man whom the students learned to respect for his understanding. Wherever his students were, Mr. Raftery could be found. Assisting Mr. Raftery was Mr. Charles Brucato, Assistant Principal, who also coached students for the Oratorical Con¬ test. Mrs. Cornell’s tea was considered a major social event by her English students. Our readings of Julius Caesar were enough to make Shakespeare turn over in his grave. Mrs. Cornell was one of our avid sports fans. Mrs. Fitzpatrick, a newcomer to our school, urged us to express our inner self.” Book reports will never be quite the same. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was often mistaken for one of the students, when she, too, had to change classes. Mr. Brucato and Mr. Raferty make a wonderful team as they administer M.H.S. affairs. Mrs. Cornell discusses her creative writing class with Mrs. Fitzpatrick. 10 Mrs. Tebeau, who will always be Miss Deletti to some, faithfully worked with her girls’ basketball team. How could the Future Teachers’ Club have gotten along without her? We solved the mystery of what Miss Cola- vita saves for her seniors. Her explanations and reading were the only things that kept us from being completely lost in Macheth. Need another word be said about our Con¬ stitutional essays? Mr. Tredeau tried to make us either ora¬ tors or tennis pros. Standing in front of the class for three minutes and forgetting your speech is a frightening experience! Mrs. Tebeau, Miss Colavita, and Mr. Tredeau take time out from Shakespeare to pose for the photographer. Mr. DiBattista spent two full years having debates with a certain senior boy about Harry Truman. How fitting for a history teacher to be advisor of the Good Government Day and Student Exchange Programs. History was the subject that Mr. Pilla taught, but we’re sure he will be remembered as the guardian of the UP” stairway to the second floor of the high school. No one ever sneaked past him down the up staircase. What would happen if Mr. Holland ever lost his briefcase? We’re convinced it either holds Business Law textbooks or a handbook for Student Council advisors. Mr. DiBattista and Mr. Holland discuss U.S. History while Mr. Pilla listens and learns. 11 Mrs. Klein trained us to be typists, al¬ though some of us will never stop looking at the keys. Without her, the school newspaper could never have come out on time. Mrs. Ciesla doubled this year as both a business teacher and a guidance counselor. Her advice will lead many from the class of ’68 to a happy and successful future. Mr. Cecchi molded future football stars from his Junior Varsity team and scientists from his earth science classes. Will we ever understand Mr. Calagione’s equilateral triangles and parallelograms ? His skill as a football and track coach will never be forgotten by his players who learned a great deal from him. Mr. Rota was the only teacher who put Batman and Robin in his Physics problems. We all admired his small son who was pres¬ ent at all of the football games. Mr. Rota also had very strong opinions about where to get your Christmas trees. Looking like fashion models rather than high school teachers are Mrs. Klein and Mrs. Ciesla. 12 Mr. Cecchi, Mr. Calagione, and Mr. Rota look very serious as they discuss the merits of studying science. Mr. Oliveri led the junior class to fantastic profits in their sale of shakers. His most prized possession was his hat. He was a star performer each year in the faculty basketball game. Mr. Oliveri was a confirmed ski enthu¬ siast. How many of us still remember Jingle Bells” in Latin as taught by Mrs. Driscoll? Mrs. Driscoll never refused to chaperone any of our school dances. Miss Lee taught us a variety of subjects ranging from Typing to General Business. Often accompanying us on ski trips, Miss Lee rated on the slopes as well as in the classroom. Mr. Oliveri, Mrs. Driscoll, and Miss Lee get together for a chat between classes. Mr. Tosches’ days as principal and Math teacher will always remain with us. As ad¬ ministrative assistant, Mr. Tosches helped to make our days at M.H.S. happy ones. We will always remember Mr. Scagnelli for bringing about our Data processing room. He diligently assisted Mr. Cal in coaching the football team. Mr. Scagnelli was also the able head of our Business Department. Often found in the Data Processing room are Mr. Tosches and Mr. Scagnelli. 13 Miss Hennessie’s debut at Milford High School was a complete success. Never had the Sociology class taken so many field trips. Graphic and highly original diagrams helped her U.S. History classes understand every¬ thing from a federal government to Squanto the Indian. Mrs. Hayes first introduced some of us to French and Latin. Her work with the French Choral Group led to being invited to per¬ form outside of our school.. St. Mary’s High School and the Rotary Club were amazed at our talented group. Mathematics and coaching basketball were Mr. Hayes’ specialties. As senior class ad¬ visor Mr. Hayes sat in on many a class meet¬ ing and spent many an hour at class car washes. Biology was taught to the underclassmen this year by a new addition to our faculty, Mr. Ditammi, who also was a fine coach for the Cross Country team. Mr. Allegrezza’s CBA Chemistry ruffled many a student’s nerves as we struggled to understand Avogadro’s numbers and the periodic table of elements. Adavnced Math and Trigonometry rounded out Mr. Alle¬ grezza’s schedule, but he still found time to serve as Chess Club Advisor. Miss Hennessie, Mrs. Hayes and Mr. Hayes glance through a copy of the school newspaper. 14 One never knows what’s brewing on C-floor when our scientists Mr. Allegrezza and Mr. Ditammi are around. Mrs. Duggan’s Review Math Class pre¬ pared us for our future. As Honor Society advisor, Mrs. Duggan accompanied a group of us to Boston to see Camelot as well as helping us with our various projects. During Mrs. Phillips’ first year at M.H.S., she gave us a better understanding of trigo¬ nometry and geometry. Room 106’s Christ¬ mas decorations on the blackboard were a pleasant sight. Sin” and Cos” are everyday words when a student leaves Mrs. Duggan’s and Mrs. Phillips’ classes. What do we remember first about Mr. Sweeney. Is it his comparison of the Gallic Wars with World War II Or his pep talks to the O.L.I. Committee? Or his French conversations” with Miss Burns and Mr. Villani ? French was never as delightful as when taught by Miss Burns. Those who took French III are still reciting Apres la Ba- taille.” Every student waited eagerly for his birthday so the Joyeuse fete a toi” could be sung to him. mmu ' - MSD Mr. Sweeny’s French accent brings a smile to Miss Burns’ face. 15 The school newspaper flourished under the capable advice of Mr. Brown. Any reading problems that students may have had were soon straightened out by his little reading machines and his excellent teaching. Mrs. Van der Hurk took over Mr. Rota’s room and taught U.S. History as well as le frangais.” Will we ever get over hearing her converse with Mr. Villani in Italian? Mr. Peters shared a room with Mr. Brown after many of us had left for summer va¬ cation. He was the able clerk of the Summer School Program. A business teacher, Mr. Peters was a welcome addition to the faculty. Mr. Villani’s room was the only one in the school where at different times of the day one could be greeted by Bonjour”, Boun Giorno”, or Guten Tag.” Strains of the Schnitzcepank Song” led by Herr Villani could be heard every Friday during the fifth period class. An avid football enthusiast and Key Club supporter was our Mr. Noferi. Anyone could easily distinguish Mr. Noferi’s World His¬ tory students who always carried a morning newspaper with them to be perused in class. Mr. Espanet was tops when it came to teaching Civics and Biology. Mr. Espanet also sent most of us on the pathway to safe driving. Mr. Brown lets Mrs. Van der Hurk and Mr. Peters know what teaching at M.H.S is like. 16 Mr. Villani, Mr. Noferi, and Mr. Espanet discuss the interrelationship of teach¬ ing languages, history, and civics. Miss Calarese molded M.H.S. students into some of the finest stenographers and bookkeepers to be found. Learning all the rules certainly was worth it after all. A combination of undangling” dangling participles and straightening out the Budget Club accounts kept Miss Callahan busy. She was also half the reason why our Junior Class cake sale was such a success last year. Miss Callahan comes across the hall to have a few words with Miss Calarese. Any student in need of help could be sure to find it by asking Mr. O’Donnell. Whether the question be in French, Latin, Mathematics, or History, Mr. O’Donnell gave all the help we needed. A student seek¬ ing any kind of reference books usually brought his problem to Mr. O’Donell who knew just where to direct him. Helping M.H.S. students with research projects in the library is Mr. O’Donnell, School Librarian. 17 The swinging sounds of Jingle Bell Rock” played by the band or of My Favorite Things” sung by the Senior Choral Group were the work of Music Director Mr. Di- Donato. The senior girls will never forget the smile on his face as they performed at the Christmas assembly. Mr. Brennan added the psychedelic” touch to our Art Department this year. The art students found themselves in a feature story in a Worcester newspaper. Students vied for a position in his esteemed Ad¬ vanced Art Workshop.” Dr. DeSalvia counseled many of us in regard to our futures as we toiled over our college applications or our inquiries for jobs. Dr. DeSalvia also served as Athletic Director and as advisor to just about anything with which we approached him. Guidance Director Harold Moran’s office was never empty, as an endless stream of students sought his advice. Mr. Moran faith¬ fully informed us of upcoming College Board Tests and available employment. Many an hour of Mr. Moran’s was spent as we discussed our anxieties over college fees, ap- pications, and interviews. His light burned late into the hours long after school had closed. Music and Art are a part of Milford High School students as taught by Mr. DiDonato and Mr. Brennan. 18 Discussing the future of one of our prospective graduates are our Guidance Directors Dr. DeSalvia and Mr. Moran. Many students sought the aid of School Nurse, Mrs. Healy, as were plagued by an occasional headache or stomach upset. A re¬ assuring smile and perhaps a dismissal slip greeted us, and suddenly we felt better already! Mrs. Healey’s tender loving care” has cured many a Milford High School student. Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Davoren, enjoyed many advantages by having his of¬ fice in the high school building. All choral group rehearsals or activity rehearsals or performances could be previewed by him. Mrs. Kalunian, Mrs. Ahearn, and Mrs. Cur¬ ran were helped by efficient office girls who spent their study periods easing the secre¬ taries’ work. Mr. Davoren’s secretaries, Mrs. Kalunian, Mrs. Ahearn, and Mrs. Curran gather around him. 19 We would hate to have to count the num¬ ber of absent slips that Mrs. Visconti and Miss Ramelli have handed out to us in the past four years. The same applies to the number of pieces of bread buttered for us by the cafeteria staff. The credit risks they took on lunches charged” was sometimes a great one, but we usually paid the next day. Mrs. Visconti and Miss Ramelli serve as efficient secretaries for the Guidance Office and Principal’s Office respectively. 20 The Cafeteria Personnel — Mrs. Cugini, Mrs. Rose, Mrs. D’Allessandro, Mrs. Lombardi, Mrs. Aga- ganian, and Mrs. Delfanti. The Milford School Committee posing for our photographer — Mr. Thomas Cullen, Mr. Francis Fitzpatrick, Superintendent David I. Davoren, Attorney Pacifico DeCapua, Mr. Robert McGinnis, and Mr. Michael DeCeseare. Mr. Ernest Lombardi, a member of the committee for years, died as the book went to press. In Memoriam 1915-1967 Mr. Henry Boots” Mussulli HAPPINESS IS having every one of your proofs for your class pictures come out good. MISERY IS having a class meeting during extra period and having the bell ring before you get anything accomplished. SECURITY IS knowing where you’re going and what you’re going to do after graduation. CLASS ADVISORS I 1 Mr. David Hayes and Miss Dorothy Callahan. The class of 1968 was an active class which held cake sales, carwashes, and dances to boost the class treasury and to help finance the class activities, such as the Junior Prom and Senior Hop. JUNIOR CLASS Although the juniors were faced with such serious p roblems as taking college boards, making all the arrangements for the prom on time, and earning money for the class treasury, the Class of ’69, with the able assistance of class advisors Miss Calarese and Mr. Oliveri and under the capable leadership of class officers, Ross Mazzarelli, president; Deborah Mael, vice-president, Denise Mastroianni, treasurer; and David Falconer, secretary, managed to make their third year at M.H.S. one they will always remember. Many members of the Class of ’69 played important roles in the activities of the school. Frances Niro served the entire student body as the Student Council secretary. The football team would not have been com¬ plete without the fine playing of Peter Macchi and Joseph Plichta, who were elected by their teammeates as co-captains for the up-coming season. Juniors Joseph Plichta, Anthony Longo, Paul Cogliandre, and David Hachey represented the class on the basketball court. Among the leaders of the girls’ basketball team were Linda Nigro, Mary Small, Beverly Hill and Val¬ erie Griffith. Richard Badis sparked the cross-country team to many a victory. Lynn Derderian was tri- umpant in a speech contest held at Natick High, where she won two first prizes. The Class of ’69 had much to be proud of in the accomplishments of its members. The Juniors hope to continue to make such notable contributions to the class itself and to the entire school. 86 Are Sherri, Mike, David, and Karen sharing that one cafeteria meal? SOPHOMORE CLASS Upon beginning their second year of high school, the class of ’70 with the guidance of class advisors Miss Burns and Mr. Noferi had finally realized what high school was all about. Led by officers Gary Balian, president; Bonnie Bufalo, vice-president; Karen Papelian, secretary; and Joseph Pessotti, treasurer, the Sophomores took part in various extra-curricular activities, and many excelled in them. On the football field Mark Ahearn, Steven Scott and Patrick Fullum were important members of the jayvee team. Basketball players Francis Ruscitti, who started off in most of the games, Steven Mainini, and John Bianchi played on the varsity team. All of the other athletic teams and clubs were also bettered by the participation of the Sophomores. In the next two years at M.H.S. the class of ’70 is certain to equal and even to surpass its past performances. 88 A few sophomores in this picture seem more interested in the camera than in their lessons. FRESHMAN CLASS They were timid and hestitant as they first entered Milford High School. They had to get used to new classes, new teachers, and being treated like adults. But within a few weeks they felt as if they really belonged. After electing class officers Carl Deleso, president; Patrice lacovelli, vice-president; Jamie Casasanta, secretary; and Thomas Vitalini, treasurer, and becoming acquainted with class advisor Mr. Cecchi, the activities of the class soon began. They were really proud of the freshman athletes. At basketball games they could see Carl Deleso, Tommy Vitalini, and many other freshmen contributing to the victories of the Jayvees. Many freshmen also participated in baseball and football. They have just begun to realize that high schol years pass to quickly. They will try to make the best of these next three years so that they will be ready to face the world as the class of ’68 is about to do. 90 Classroom scenes were predominant when the O.L.I. took pictures of the Freshman Class. ■ t f-®-”- r 3 II m 1 1 i1 t fl f| ; fl I 1 •■• 1)5 . i 11 IS ' 1 U II [ ■ ik’ “ 1 I E fl 1 V ' ‘ Freshmen in this classroom are con¬ centrating on their studies and will join in extra-curricular activities as time goes on. Officers elected after the induction were Teresa Esteves, president; Robert Brown, vice-president; Gloria Guadagnoli, secretary; and Paul Bibbo, treas¬ urer. Faculty advisors for the group are Mrs. Agnes Duggan and Mr. Melvin Rota. Members of the group successfully sponsored cake sales and a dance. They also sang at area rest homes at Christmas time. A highlight of their activities for the year was a trip to a Boston theater to attend a showing of the motion picture Camelot”. The Honor Society also performs various service projects, such as aiding the Lions Club in their drive for money for eye research. STUDENT rmm m. Kik . ' m-r Iff kUh - ■: COUNCIL The Student Council of Milford High School again did a fine year’s work. The Council sponsored its regular dances and promoted the various drives dur¬ ing the school year, the Christmas drive being one of the most successful in years. The Council also split the costs of our school newspaper. Officers of this year’s Council were Joseph Antonellis (’68), presi- deent; Leon Gene Ju (’68), vice-president; Frances Niro (’69), secretary, and Marianne lacovelli (’68), treasurer. Along with its other works, the Council gave two $100 scholarships to members of the Sen¬ ior Class. Mr. Holland’s advice was invaluable to Student Council offi¬ cers Frances Niro, secretary; Leon Ju, vice-president; Joseph Antonellis, president; and Marianne lacovelli, treasurer. 109 Our future Einsteins ? ? SCIENCE CLUB This year the Science Club is under the direc¬ tion of two new members of our faculty. Mr. Dittami and Mr. Cecchi, members of the Sci¬ ence Department, are co-advisors for the club. Meetings are held on every other Thursday night. The club has had lectures given by Mr. Dittami, films were shown, and plans were made for various experiments and general discussions to be held. The Science Club planned to raise some money. Jt was hoped that a scholarship could be offered to some member of the class of ’68 or some piece of equipment could be purchased for the Science Department as a gift from this year’s club. Mr. Michael DiDonato met with his group every Tuesday and Thursday during the extra period to rehearse such songs as My Favorite Things” and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The group performed at the Christmas program and at the graduation exercises. 112 FRENCH CHORAL GROUP The French Choral Group, directed by Mrs. Marie Hayes, is known by all proper Frenchmen as Les Petites Chanteuses.” These fifty girls not only sing sweetly, but in their best French! Mrs. Hayes, accomplished in both French and music, has been working with the group for three years. They have quite an extensive repertoire, rang¬ ing from the patriotic La Marsaillaise” to the whimsical La Cigale.” Les Petites Chanteuses” performed at major school events and also sang for the students of St. Mary’s Central Catholic High School. Mrs. Hayes directed six of the girls at a Rotary Club dinner at the Larches in March. Mrs. Hayes and her mademoiselles perform. 113 Future members of the Kiwanis Club. KEY CLUB The Milford High School Key Club started its sixth year of operation this year. The club is composed of 24 members of the upper three classes, each member having to display outstanding qualities of leadership, service, and high scholastic capabilities. Some of the service projects undertaken by the Key Club this year include guarding against vandalism on Halloween, directing traffic in the school corridors, and cleaning the cafeteria after lunch periods. The Key Club is also always on call to assist its parent organization, the Kiwanis Club, in any service endeavors throughout the school year. 114 Mr. Noferi discusses club business with John Calagione, treasurer; Nicholas Zacchilli, vice-president; and Robert Calagione, secretary. The members of the Business Service Club can always be called upon to be of some assistance. BUSINESS SERVICE CLUB The Business Service Club, a four year-old institution at Milford High, took on a new appearance this year as members were chosen on a competitive basis from the members of the Future Business Leaders of America. This select group of students is divided into various departments corresponding to those of the M.H.S. faculty. Each department, which is supervised by a student serving as department head, aids the teachers in the corresponding department with their clerical duties. The Business Service Club, by enabling its members to gain experience in actual clerical work, plays a tremendous part in preparing its members for their responsibilities in the business world. 115 The first set of officers of the newly-formed Future Business Leaders of America are seated, Linda Tieuli, vice-president; Ronald Harris, president; Rosemarie DiVitto, treasurer; Susan Walleston, historian; and standing, Kathleen O’Sullivan, reporter; Mrs. Ciesla, advisor; Lorraine Guidali, secretary; and Miss Lee, advisor. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA This year marks the beginning of a newly founded organization, the Future Business Leaders of America. The F.B.L.A., under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Ciesla, is part of a national association. Dues are collected at the beginning of each year, and the Washington Chapter requires half of the money, while the rest is used for student activities. During the year, the club has gone on various field trips, and speakers from business schools have lectured to the members. Also, the F.B.L.A. has begun a project in which certain members have worked in downtown offices during school hours, and reported their experiences to the club. 116 A large membership characterized the first year of the F.B.L.A. A group of the prettiest business leaders to be found anywhere. 117 FUTURE TEACHERS’ CLUB The Future Teachers’ Club has functioned at Milford High School for many years. Its purpose is to enable interested students to become aware of the opportunities open to them in the teaching profession. The club advisor, Mrs. Tebeau, guided the students in providing many or¬ ganized activities throughout the year. This year’s club enjoyed such activities as field trips, panel dis¬ cussions, and guest speakers at their meetings. These activities helped the members to gain a great deal of knowledge concerning the teach¬ ing profession. Officers in this year’s club were Frannie Catella, presi¬ dent; Karen Giacomelli, vice-pres¬ ident; Jean Hachey, secretary; and Claire Bertorelli, treasurer. idlliMi ttttIHI English, Science, Physical Education—What’s your specialty? There might even be some future principals in this picture. 118 Florence Nightingale would have had competition if this group of future nurses had been around then. FUTURE NURSES’ CLUB The Future Nurses’ Club, under the direction of Mrs. Gertrude Healey, R.N., has completed another active year. Discussions of the various occupations in the medical field open to girls, receiving guest speakers, distributing information about nursing, and planning extra-curricular activities comprised the majority of the meetings. Community projects, which included soliciting for the Arthritis Foundation, collecting toys for the Salvation Army at Christmas, and working at area clinics, have given the members the satisfaction of helping others and has prepared them for their future in caring for people. Club advisor Mrs. Healy is surrounded by officers Anna May Scanzaroli, vice-president; Phyllis Binks, secretary; Jean Scordamaglia, program chairman; and Kimberly Knox, president. Absent when the picture was taken was Mary Smith, treasurer. 119 Coach Miss Colavita poses with the contestants, all of whom look relieved that it’s all over. ORATORICAL CONTEST Oratory is a field which is not neglected in a Milford High School student’s education. That fact can be evidenced each year, when Milford High School students compete in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. This year the four con¬ testants, whose essays were selected from those written by each member of the Senior Class, were John Calagione, Dennis Davoren, Barbara Freed¬ man, and Paul Matos. Each contestant presented a very forceful and effective essay on the United States Consitution. The Junior and Senior Classes proved to be an attentive audience. The three judges, rating the contestants on voice, diction, gestures, and contents of the essays, selected Bar¬ bara Freedman as winner and Paul Matos as al¬ ternate. American Legion official, Mr. Murphy, and Miss Colavita con¬ gratulate Barbara on her fine performance. 120 The serious-minded young chess players pose with advisor Mr. Allegrezza. CHESS CLUB Chess, despite any intellectual connotations, is a game of simple pleasure. Under the able guidance of Mr. Allegrezza, the members of the Milford High Chess Club are finding this to be ever so true. With Hyman Stramer as its captain and with dedicated players, this is one club that labors to support the high ideals of Milford High School. At their weekly club meetings in Room 309, the players vie with one another to prime themselves for num¬ erous interschool tournaments. Whether the game results are good or bad, each player yearns to improve. It is this desire to excel, not merely skill, that wins games. The club has only recently initiated a new program, the purpose of which is instruc¬ tion as well as organized contests. By meeting twice a week the players are now able to allot one meeting for studying various classic games, and the other employing this new knowledge against one another in individual games. Whether you are a novice or a veteran, the club door is always wide open. Most anyone can learn the fundamentals of chess in no more than 30 minutes, but it takes th e active competition and fellowship of a club to give the game its rare depth and timeless appeal. 121 Mr. Oliveri, advisor to the Ski Club, looks proud to be associated with such a fine group of young ski enthusiasts. SKI CLUB On blistering cold mornings at 5:30 A.M., most denizens of Milford are snugly tucked in their warm beds, but not the fifty-odd members of the Ski Club! Under the capable guidance of Mr. Leonard Oliveri, the members, laden with skis, boots, and poles, could be seen assembled in the Milford High parking lot with hopes of finding that perfect slope. This year the members took advantage of the facilities at Thunder Mountain and Hogback Mountain, where Mr. Oliveri demonstrated the latest Austrian techniques. What form! The club was started three years ago and membership has steadily increased, making this year the most successful yet. 122 ART WORKSHOP The Art Workshop is the core group of the Art Department, of that there is no question. Many, many hours of extra work and effort are put into the Annual Student Art Exhibition which is held in May of each year. Each member of the organization has shown exceptional talent in art, a true desire to better himself in the field, and in general, holds high hopes of continuing his education after graduation with the ultimate goal of making a career within the growing and interesting fields of com¬ mercial art. As can be seen from the picture below, these students are not the usual seedy beatnik art types that are erroneously associated with people of their specialized talent. Mr. Brennan insists that in order to destroy any such false images, they attend meet¬ ings and activities wearing ties . . . the status symbols of the professionals of our world. THE SCARLET The Scarlet, during its second year of publication, is under the supervision of Mrs. Beatrice Klein and Mr. James Brown, and the staff is headed by Susan Capuzziello, Editor-in-Chief. The newspaper is published four times during the school year and is distributed to members of the Student Association. To aid in the financing of the newspaper, advertisements from local stores and banks are solicited. The Scarlet informed students of new teachers, sports, school activities, fashion trends, and the latest news going through the halls of M.H.S. Reporters and typists also contributed greatly to the Scarlet as they pose with advisor Mr. Brown. HARVEST DANCE The lively imaginations of M.H.S. students can be evidenced at the annual Harvest Dance. No one can deny that Sheila and Mar- Rat deserved the prizes that night. Si - 11X 6 Santa apeared that October evening as well as other unusual-looking charac ters. 125 The Grand March—the climax of a perfect evening. JUNIOR PROM Many activities will be remembered by the graduating class, when in the future they recollect their high school days. The words Junior Prom”, however, seem to have a magical ring to which only special occasions can claim. Perhaps it is the fact that girls are so beautifully dressed and boys so handsomely attired. Or it could be the dulcet sounds of the orchestra as they play the song chosen as the theme for the evening. Or maybe it is the delicious meal. Or simply being with someone you’re happy to be with. Whatever the case, April 18, 1967, was no exception. Strains from A Summer Place” wafted through the air at King Philip Ballroom as the members of the class of 1968 danced to the music of the Jerry Seeco Sextet. Ironically, as the couples left the ballroom, snowflakes were drifting to the ground; but nevertheless more than one person could be heard humming A Summer Place” as the snow piled up, as did memories for everyone who attended. 126 ■ i InyH P’S § i i ■ v ' A j The Junior Prom Committee who made all the arrangements. BAND The Milford High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Michael DiDonato, has proven itself again to be a valuable asset to Milford High School. During the extra period and after school, the band could be heard rehearsing either in the bandroom or marching up and down Town Park. The activities of the band were demanding upon the young musicians. Whe¬ ther adding spirit to football games or playing a medley of carols at the annual Christmas assembly, the members of the band put their hearts into their music. As far as M.H.S. students were concerned, the Mil¬ ford High School Band was the best to be found. Leading the band was Drum Majorette Barbara Freedman, and Captain Julie Manella led the majorettes in their many routines. M.H.S. Majorettes—1st row—Drum Majorette, Barbara Freedman; Linda Oliveri, Judy DePaolo, Debbie Davis, Jackie Costello, and Captain, Julie Manella. 2nd row—Mary DiGirolamo, Cheryl Mangini, Maria Piazza, and Elinor Freedman. The Thanksgiving Day football game was the last for majorettes Barb, Linda, Judy, Debbie, and Julie and for Band members Dave, Linda, Candy, and Steve. 131 A HAPPINESS IS winning the Town Series basketball games from St. Mary’s in two straight games! MISERY IS torrential rain on the day of the Thanksgiving football game. SECURITY IS outweighing the opposing football team by a substantial margin. The Varsity Team of 1967 FOOTBALL The M.H.S. Scaret ’67 football team ended its season with a record of 2 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. Victories were won against Auburn and St. Mary’s and the tie was with the team from Wachusetts Regional High School. The Scarlets played a hard hitting, hustling game all season long, playing one of the roughest schedules of any school in its class. Team standouts were conference all-sta ' s John Knox and Dennis Davoren, Carlo Macchi, Bob Parkhurst, Joe Szady, John Calagione, Ron Harris, Ernie Bertulli, and Mick Connearny. The class of 1968 and especially the football seniors would like to thank the coaching staff, Mr. Paul Scagnelli, Mr. Aldo Cecchi and Head Coach, Mr. John Calagione, for putting in so much of their time and effort. At the close of the football season, Mr. Calagione and Mr. Scagnelli stepped down from their positions, and Mr. Richard Corbin became the new coach of the football team. 134 The determination on the faces of John Knox and Joe Szady typified the spirit of the M.H.S. football team. The young harrier squad was hindered by lack of experi¬ ence and depth. The team, comprised of only sophomores and juniors, showed considerable improvement after each meet. The next few years look promising for the young Scarlet harriers and as long as Coach Dittami keeps his boys work¬ ing hard, the team should have better results. CHEERLEADERS Original formations, towering pyramids, and loud cheering characterized this year’s cheering squad at M.H.S. Dressed in snappy red and white uniforms, the cheerleaders urged both the football and basketball teams on to many victories. The spectators at Milford High sports events were entertained by the cheerleaders’ routines and were spurred on to cheering our team by this group of girls with a great deal of spirit. 138 Captain Marianne’s imagination and vitality were instru¬ mental in making this year’s cheering squad so good. Senior Cheerleaders include Frannie Catella, Marianne lacovelli, and Debbie Dominici. 139 Never lacking spirit or determination was our Varsity Basketball Team. BASKETBALL The ’67-’68 basketball season gave hope to the future Scarlets of despite a 6-12 record. The Scarlets played much better than their record implies, losing some very close games. The Scarlets were led by seniors Ducky Aldrich, Joe Antonellis, Joe Szady, and Steve Kedski. Ducky Aldrich and Joe Antonelli were the co-captains of the team and inspired their teammates with their hustle and never-say-die-attitude. The seniors did a fine job, but certainly the underclassmen helped the team really move. Joe Plichta, Mike Prece, Fran Ruscitti, Steve Mainini, and Paul Cogliandro will be the big men under the boards for M.H.S. next year. One of the brightest notes of the season was the double victory over St. Mary’s. The M.H.S. varsity beat the Tigers in two straight games, while the Jayvees needed three games to overcome them. Toward the end of the season, they came up with some close games, including a 32-29 loss to Hopedale and a 47-40 loss to tournament- bound Bellingham. FACULTY GAME Milford High students had no notion of what sort of strategy the Faculty team planned to use on March 12, until the very day of the game. On that day Mr. Brennan plastered the walls of the school with posters which sought to unnerve the the Varsity. Although the Faculty dis¬ played a great deal of fancy footwork, the Varsity emerged victorious with a 63-51 win. The preliminary contest between the Jayvees and the Key Club resulted in a 45-22 victory for the Jayvees. Proceeds from the game went to the Milford Men’s Teachers’ Federation and Key Club Schol¬ arship Funds. Swan Lake” performed by the Faculty Ballet Company. 143 A HAPPINESS IS many generous sponsors. SUPPLEMENT STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM Once again, smdents represent¬ ing the David Hale Fanning Trade School of Worcester visited Milford High School. In the morning the four girls were given a tour of the school conducted by Marianne laco- velli, Marianne Ferrucci, Frannie Cate 11a, Joe Antonellis, and Carl Speroni. The cafeteria provided the girls with a hot lunch which gave them the energy to tour Draper Corporation in the afternoon. After many ideas were exchanged with Milford High’s representatives sup¬ per was served at the Memorial School cafeteria. Carl doesn’t mind that our guests got the seats. MMM! Just like Mother’s?. ? All this beauty has put our Joe in the background. 2 fr!y TALENT SHOW If the paint fits, wear it, Mr. Brennan! Nobody has the Urge for Going” when Joe sings. Hidden talent blossomed at Mil¬ ford High School when the O. L. I. presented a variety show on March 10, 1968 .. Students and teachers alike participated in this affair which proved to be very enjoyable and entertaining. The audience was brought from the moving rendition of Urge for Going sung by Joe Scott to the hilarious pie throwing antics of Ducky Aldrich, Teresa Estves, and David Gianopolous. The highlight of the evening was the Dating Game which managed to pair off Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Dittami. The faculty certainly showed themselves to be good sports when they trouped in as an old-fashioned German Band. Our thanks to Mr. DiDonato. 3 SCIENCE FAIR Do you guys really know how to work that stuff? Milford high School presented the annual Science Fair in March under the direction of Mr. Calagione, head of the science department. Students in physics, chemistry, biology, physical science, and general science classes displayed projects which were the result of much hard work and research. The many diverse subjects which were represented at the fair ranged from volcanos to the manufacture of liquor. Prizes were awarded to those stu¬ dents who in the opinion of the judges had superior displays. Grand prize winners were Mary Kraft, Law¬ rence LeBlanc, Joseph Rota, and Richard Tumolo who became eligible to enter their exhibits in the Worcester County Kiwanis Science Fair held at Worcester Poly¬ technic Institute. Kim explains her project to Mary and Maryellen. Abe! Don’t shoot! 4 ART EXHIBIT Mr. Brennan and Joe Szady cast a critical eye on Joe’s painting. It was undoubtedly the first time that our poor Town Hall, with its New England neo-classic architecture and stoic atmosphere had been invaded since its birth over a century and a half ago. To be invaded is bad enough, but by HIPPIES! Gads! So the 3rd Annual Student Art Exhibition began. The High School’s portion of this year’s Exhibition used, as these photos show, a theme of the present day in-cult, the flower people, our good(?) friends, the Hippies. Over one-hundred fifty pieces of art from the High School were displayed this year. Hard work and long hours helped make this year’s showing our best exhibition yet. For us, at least, it will always be remembered as a pleasant, but kookie”, piece of fallout from room 313. Approving this as the dress code for the class of 1970, are Susan and Marianne. What did the art workshop have in mind when thev built this hippie? 5 Seventeen, Glamour? No, our Milford High Seniors! Sue serves as an example of the spring fashions she’s describing. FASHION SHOW The world of spring fashions was brought to Mil¬ ford High School in the O. L. I. sponsored Fashion show. The senior girls along with Mrs. O’Brien and Miss Hennessie, modeled the latest daytime, evening, and sportswear outfits for the spring and summer. Sue Derderian described the clothes, as the girls proved themselves to be very poised and glamorous. Appropriate background music, played by Mrs. Hayes, accompanied Sue’s descriptions. The scholars of the Class of 1968 . The speakers lead the procession. HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION Twenty-eight members of the Junior and Senior classes were honored for their outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service when they were inducted into the National Honor Society. Teresa Esteves, president of the Honor Society, spoke and introduced the speakers who elaborated on the meanings of the four qualifications for membership in the Honor Society. Addressing the assembly were Barbara Freedman, who spoke on scholarship; Robert Brown, leadership; Gloria Guadagnoli, character; Paul Bibbo, service. Newly inducted members were presented certificates by Mr. Raftery. Drink your milk, and some day you’ll be in the Honor Society, too.” 7 SENIOR WEEK-END Mar-rat, what are you up to? Their smiles are as bright and shiny as the car they washed. The Seniors used the last week-end in April very profitably. They started out on Friday with a food sale in the school cafeteria. Such an abundance of food was donated that some of it had to be taken to the Stop Shop to be sold there. On Saturday a car wash was held in the school yard during which work was stopped only for a few showers. The week-end was highlighted by a dance featuring the Ford Theatre which was staged Saturday night in the John C. Lynch Auditorium. Profits from these activities were used to help defray the costs to the Seniors for their Hop and Class Trip. Were these guys this ambitious in school? MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS The Dr. John V. Although St. Mary’s captured the Town Series for the second year in a row, play was fairly consistent through¬ out the year. Defensive standouts were Seniors Steve Kedski and Dave Capuzziello, and Sophomores John Bianchi and Mike Prece. Leading the offensive attack were Seniors Dave Melpignano and Ducky Aldrich, who were given help by Junior Dave Falconer. The prospects for next year look promising, with eight veterans returning, including pitchers Dave Cavazza, Steve Mainini, and Paul Bruno, who all did a com¬ mendable job. These senior players will be sorely missed by the rest of the team. 16 Ambitious members of the track team find time to pose for a yearbook picture. TRACK The track team finished the season with a disappointing record of one win and twelve losses. However, this was not the fault of the newly appointed coach Mr. Louis Dittami, who coached the team with great knowledge and enthusiasm. Interest in track seemed to hit a new low this year, but this did not deter the efforts of the team. Seniors who excelled were Micky Connearney, Bob Kenney, and Bob Brown. Dick Badis proved to be the big gun with wins in the mile, highjump, relay and discus events. Among others, standouts were Joe Reva, Jim Langlois, Bruce Rideout, and Mark Ahearn, who will all be returning next year. With this nucleus, the prospects for next year are promising. It’s a bird, it’s a plane—NO, it’s Richard Badis, one of the stars of our track team. Seniors join hands with Coach Dittami for good luck in the meet. GOLF The Milford High Golf Team finished its first season back in the Midland League this year with a 4-7-2 record. This does not tell the whole story, however, for the boys met strong opposition in the teams they faced. Team captain Mike Laronga, Bob Moro, and Walter Browne turned in fine per¬ formances all season long. Although the Scarlets ended their season with a losing record. Coach Scagnelli felt that the boys played well and were im¬ proving with every match, and everyone agrees that a good time was had by all. . . right, Jay? With the loss of only one senior, Steve Comolli, the fumre of the team looks bright for next season. Lack of experience took its toll this year, but keep an eye on the Milford Golf Team in ’69- Jay Emmitt returns from Millis. Are there any fumre Arnold Palmers in this group? Mr. Scagnelli checks out Bob Moro’s swing. GIRLS ' SOFTBALL The Girls’ Softball Team ended up the season with 2 wins and 8 losses. Three seniors, Barbara Altieri, Cheryl Miller, and Linda Kingston, will be sadly missed. Cheryl Miller led all batters by getting a .534 average and Barbara Altieri was second with a .356. With new additions and more practice, the team hopes to improve next year. Other members of the team that made a great effort were juniors, Mary Small, Kathy Boone, Barbara Clements, Charlene Jacobs; sophomores, Mary Ellen Miller, Denise Charest; and freshmen, Janet Worsham, Leslie Dickinson, and Pam Fields. Miss Hennessie was coach. Is strategy-planning that difficult, Mr. Noferi? Captains Cheryl and Barbara look over the team before the game. 19 Will these guys be future members of Longwood? Captain Paul DiVitto discusses the match with Coach Tredeau. TENNIS The Milford High School Tennis Team closed out its spring schedule of 1968 with a respectacle record of four wins and four losses. In its infant season as a varsity sport, the team weathered a tough non-league season which included matches with the experi¬ enced varsities of Bellingham, Medfield, Franklin, Medway, and Algonquin Regional. With the beginning of the 1969 season, the team will be a member of Midland League. Even though they will be in a tough league next year. Coach Tredeau feels the team will be successful. Bob Kenney, a senior, is the only player not remrn- ing. Such veterans, as Paul DiVitto (Capt.), Jim Chapman, Dave D’Alessandro, Steve Zurndoufer, Fran Ruscitti, Jeff Lovell, Kevin Rice, Joe Pessotti, Bob Marelli will producer what Mr. Tredeau con¬ siders a potentially successful team. 20 FUTURE TEACHERS ' CLUB TEA Milford High’s aspirants to the teaching profession honored their future colleagues at the Future Teachers’ Club Tea. The M. H. S. faculty were guests of the club, and the women teach¬ ers were given corsages. A climax to this annual event was the presentation of gifts to those faculty members who are leaving Milford High this year. The Future Teachers’ Club Tea is considered by the Clubs’ members to be a fitting tribute to M. H. S.’ hardworking teachers. Our advisor, Mrs. Tebeau, has her corsage pinned on by President Frannie. What’s the matter, Mr. Hayes, camera shy? Sure looks good, doesn’t it, Mr. ODonnell? Lorraine Guidali receives best business student award. CANDIDS You better play football! Members of the wedding. IN MEMORIAM TO MR. LOMBARDI Ernest A. Lombardi was a most sincere and dedicated member of the School Com¬ mittee who served with distinction and honor for a period of fifteen years. In spite of the fact that the pursuit of his livelihood took him out of town daily, he still found time to devote himself to the innumerable problems confronting our school system during a period of great expansion and change. Although the problems and tasks confronting Mr. Lombardi were complex and diffi¬ cult, he nevertheless persisted in his efforts to aid in reaching solutions to these difficul¬ ties. During his tenure as a member of the School Committee, he served as chairman and as vice chairman. He also served as Chairman of the Elementary Building Survey Com¬ mittee and as a member of the Building Committee which was charged with the plan¬ ning and construction of the Memorial Elementary School. The educational system of our community is much better and richer because of the services rendered to it by this civic-minded individual. The School Committee, the children, as well as the teachers and other personnel of the Milford System, have lost a staunch friend and supporter in the passing of this fine gentleman, Ernest A. Lombardi. 23 V MISERY IS THE LAST LONG WALK 24
