Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1967 volume:

NINETEEN SIXTY-SEVEN Milford, Massachusetts FOREWORD The following pages silhouette our immediate past—four years of study, severe application, and, of course many enjoyable social activities. The contents of this book make history —shadows of the past—and we now look ahead to bright and promising future times. We look ahead, now with fear and apprehension, but with eager anticipation. Those shadows of the past instill in us the strength to await our future lot. In our minds at this moment the years to come are hazy silhouettes which we will all strive to bring into sharp relief. We now stand on a threshold prepared to continue our journey through life. How long or agreeable the journey will be is not known to us now, for the future is like a thick mist, a huge shadow, hiding all objects from our view. But, it has been said that The length or agreeableness of a journey does not depend on the last few steps of it. ... it is neither the first nor last hour of our existence, but the space that parts these two—not our exit or our entrance upon the stage, but what we do, feel, and think while there—.” 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION. 6 ADMINISTRATION.8 PERSONALITIES.20 EXTRA CURRICULAR.80 ATHLETICS.120 ADVERTISING 140 O. Gerard Sweeney We, the members of the graduating class of 1967, would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Gerard Sweeney, our capable advisor. Promoting en¬ thusiasm among the committee members, Mr. Sweeney served as mediator, counselor, and trusted friend. In appreciation of his efforts and time to make our yearbook successful, we thank him. Paul F. Raftery 6 DEDICATION With sincere appreciation we, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-seven, dedicate this eighty-third edition of the Oak, Lily and Ivy, to our prin¬ cipal, Mr. Paul F. Raftery. For his thirty-one years of service to the Milford School System, as both teacher and adminis¬ trator, we thank him. 7 The Class of 1967 wishes to express sincere gratitude and many thanks to the ad¬ ministration and faculty of Milford High. We acknowl¬ edge the fact that they are responsible for the educa¬ tion we have received dur¬ ing our stay. We realize that their influence will have a profound effect on the courses our lives will A D M I N I S T R A T I O N take in the future. Miss Pyne is discussing pleasure, rather than business, with Mrs. Hayes—Perhaps a trip to France? 10 Mr. Raftery seems overwhelmed by the presence of Mrs. Klein, Miss Callahan, and Miss Calarese. Is the main topic of discussion between Mr. Oliveri, Mr. Noferi and Mr. Espanet skiing, tennis, or the local news??? Mr. Hayes and Mr. Brennan—could they be planning the next Irish Revolution? 11 Mr. Calagione, Mr. Atherton, and Mr. Allegrezza are continually working with new experiments—and don’t we all know it by the odor of C” floor? Superintendent David I. Davoren and School Committeeman Robert McGinnis flank former Principal Joseph Tosches, Assistant Principal Charles Brucato and our new principal, Mr. Paul F. Raftery for an evening of congratulatory messages. Don’t let the thoughtful faces of Mr. Holland, Guidance Director Harold Moran, Mr. White and Dr. DeSalvia fool you; smiles never leave their faces in their everyday tasks. 13 Mr. Brown is helping his student develop his reading abilities while Mr. Rota inspects the new equipment. 14 Mr. Villani and Mr. Sweeney discuss the effects of Dante’s Inferno” on The Mod Look. With all of Mr. Scagnelli’s persuading he can’t get Mr. Cronin on his side! Mrs. Cornell and Miss McCarthy discuss their experiences as Miss Deletti listens intently for some clues. 15 BHRH Miss Burns, Mrs. Duggan, Mr. Tosches, Miss Colavita, and Mrs. Driscoll relaxed at the Uxbridge Inn at the Testimonial for Mr. Tosches. 16 Ah—One, Two, Three,” commanded by Boots Mussulli. Is Mr. Tredeau really listening to Mr. DiBattista’s soliloquy? Mrs. Gertrude Healey as our school nurse has helped cure all of our ills with common sense, T.L.C., and a dismissal slip now and then. 18 Mr. Ben Lancisi gets good music from our Glee Club. New library books attract Mr. O’Donnell’s attention as new items appear on our library shelves. ' ' -iv The School Committee arrange themselves for the camera at a recent meeting. Mr. Thomas Cullen, Mr. Francis Fitzpatrick, Superintendent David I. Davoren, Attorney Pacifico DeCapua, Mr. Robert McGinnis, Mr. Ernest Lombardi, and Mr. Michael DeCesare are seated in the usual left to right order. Problems facing this committee seem to be more serious with each passing year. New school con¬ struction, is, of course, the great¬ est. A site has been chosen and hopes are high for construction to begin as soon as possible. Mrs. Ahearn, Mrs. Kalunian and Mrs. Curran are in charge of secretarial duties in Mr. Davoren’s office. 19 Milford High School is more than a granite build¬ ing: it i s an association of people-people of many different personalities. We will find these personalities molded into the workers, scholars, athletes and lead¬ ers of tomorrow. What follows is a parade of these individuals who are about to step into a world of chal¬ lenge; but with the superb training that they acquired at Milford High School, they are ready to meet these perpetual demands face to face. Ronald Santacroce leads our Senior class with Paula Goza, secretary, Richard Cecchi, treasurer, and Anne Terese Mascia, vice persident. For her excellence in leadership, citizenship, dependability, patriotism, and unselfish loyalty, we the graduating class of 1967, to¬ gether with the faculty have voted Mona Mary Chianese as the recipient of the Daughters of The American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Are you girls really study conscious? SOPHOMORES Two years ago their task began, When they had to face this great demand. But as their first year came to an end We knew in them we found a friend. They did the best that they could do And proved themselves loyal and true. They made their friends—they made their foes, But as they say, That’s how life goes.” For them, two trying, memorable years remain During which their goals they will attain. To this class of ’69 We leave these memories behind. 83 More the class of 70. At the helm of their class are: Seated: President Ken Siple; Vice President Eileen Esteeves. Standing: Secre¬ tary Lisa Oliveri; Treasurer Joseph Pessotti. FRESHMEN In 1966 they entered Milford High With endless fears that mounted to the sky. To them this school was odd and strange— But they were willing to make the change They studied hard and did their best And this was the answer to the test. They proved themselves to the test. They proved themselves loyal and true Just as we always thought they’d do. Now to them only three years remain Which again will never be the same. Having become steadfast and strong— To them the future does belong. We bring good wishes in all that they endeavor, Hoping their good qualities remain with them forever. This is it! COMMITTEE October marked the beginning of the O.L.I. Committee for the class of ’67. From an ambitious staff of work¬ ers, Mona Chianese was appointed Editor-in-Chief. We were then faced with the tedious task of raising money. Advertisements, foodsales, and sponsorships, including the O.L.I. Greenbackers, brought in ample funds. A raffle, held before Christmas, proved to be very success¬ ful. The enthusiasm and co-operation of the faculty and student body of M.H.S. stimulated an interest in the money-raising campaign of a success¬ ful yearbook. Seated: Valerie Giardini, Literary Co-Editor, Mona Chianese, Editor-in-Chief-, Dawna Veneziano, Co-Business Manager. Standing-. Tom Derderian and Fred Tieuli, Co- Sports Editors. Left to Right-. Theresa Delfanti, Literary Co-editor, Gary Widett, Business Manager-, Jackie Morse, Typing Director-, Anne Terese Mascia, Treasurer. The Einsteins of Milford High. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY In its fifth year at Milford High, the National Honor Society saw its ranks increase by twenty-four students. The group has two faculty advisors this year, Mrs. Agnes Duggan and Mr. Melvin Rota. Officers for the Society were Thomas Gilfoyle, President; Kathleen Deleso, Vice-President; Paula Goza, Secretary; and Henry Guidali, Treasurer. A cake sale, held to pay for the blazers given to the inductees, proved very successful. 96 And how would you like to be Queen for a day? STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the center of student body activities. It is the only organization which repre¬ sents all the students. This year, under the leadership of Louis Rizoli, the council has sponsored several dances, drives, and assemblies. The council also donated the calendar adjacent to the Principal’s office as its- gift for the year. At a special assembly, pins were awarded to the members of the council. This past summer, for the first time, a student from Milford High School, Louis Rizoli, represented Central Massachusetts Student Councils at the Na¬ tional Convention in Tacoma, Washington. President Rizoli brought back several ideas which helped not only our council but all the Student Councils in Cen¬ tral Massachusetts. Well, Peg, how does it feel to be outnumbered? This is the reason why our Student Council runs so smoothly—its capable advisors and officers. 97 SCIENCE CLUB 1966 marked the start of another year in the history of the Science Club. The club’s new advisors are Mr. William Atherton and Mr. Leo White. At each meeting, the club members per¬ formed experiments under the supervision of their advisors. The program committee introduced many new ideas for the agenda of the upcoming season. The highlight of the year was a winter carnival, featuring contests, skits, and snow sculpture competitions. The carnival was concluded by a dance in the school auditorium. Sitting: Fred Tieuli, Treasurer; Nancy Giacomuzzi, Secretary; Standing: Theresa Delfanti, Vice-President; Mr. White, advisor; Dave DePaolo, President. 98 Paulette gets a shampoo from Kathy Deleso at Science Club initiation. THE BUSINESS SERVICE CLUB This year’s edition of the Business Service Club was under the leadership of Dave DePaolo, President; Anne Mascia, Vice-President; Paula Shaw, Secretary, and Ready, on your mark, return your carriage!! Chicky Trongone, Treasurer. Mrs. Ciesla and Miss Lee serve as co-advisors to this club. The members assist the faculty with their clerical du¬ ties. They extend their services to the teacher’s advantage. Its purpose is to enable its members to accept re¬ sponsibilities dealing with the business field. This ex¬ perience will aid the members in perfecting their skills in office procedure. During the year, the Club takes on different means of raising money to provide two $100 Scholarships to two most deserving members of the Club. Those members who pay their membership dues receive Business Service Club pins. At the end of the year, the Club members enjoyed an outing. 100 Paula Shaw, Secretary, Anne Terese Mascia, Vice President ; Dave DePaolo, President-, Chicky Tron gone, Treasurer. Is this any way to run a club? You bet it is! FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB Are they tomorrow’s teachers—what The purpose of the Future Teachers Club is to familiarize inter¬ ested high school students with the teaching profession. Miss Mary De- letti guided us in our endeavors to provide many organized group activities. Guest speakers have made our meetings more enjoyable and profitable. DRAMA SOCIETY The Drama Society, a re-activated club at Milford High School, was conducted under the supervision of Robert Tredeau, Mrs. Earlene Cornell, and Mrs. Doris Driscoll. The primary purpose of the club was to acquaint its members with a variety of drama through dramatic readings and attendance at plays. Membership in the club was extended to those members of the student body with a sincere interest in drama. 103 They look proud to be in the Key Club. KEY CLUB The Milford High School Key Club is now in its fifth year of existence and is enjoying one of its most successful years. It followed the ideals exemplified by its sponsor, the Milford Kiwanis Club. This year the Key Club has taken down election posters after the November election, served as guards to protea the high school from vandalism over the Halloween weekend, and has presented the Youth and the Law” program to Kiwanis members and the parents of club members. Many doors will open to these Key Club members. 104 Mi Our hospitals are in good hands with these future nurses. FUTURE NURSES CLUB Officers of the Future Nurse’s Club are (left to right): Theresa Bellantuoni, Treasurer, Marilyn Brucato, Secretary, Susan Der- derian, Vice-President-, Paula Goza, President. Here at Milford High School, Mrs. Healy dedicates herself to the task of acquainting some of the girls with the life in store for them as a future nurse. The girls enjoyed many activities during the year such as visiting hospitals throughout the state. They also had fund raising activities such as cake sales. The future nurses round up their senior year with a pleasant trip. 105 IBhI H M JUNIOR PROM On the evening of April 21, at eight o’clock the Juniors were arriving at the King Philip in Wrentham, Massachusetts, for the annual Junior Prom. Girls dressed in yards of beautiful crepe, lace, and organdy were filling the hall with their handsome escorts. As the orchestra began playing the theme song, The Way You Look Tonight,” the couples waltzed around the floor and everyone seemed to be in a dream. We will always remember and try to recapture the unforgettable moments of Our Junior Prom.” Our committee that successfully planned our prom included Marilyn Brucato, Paula DeMarchi, Ronald Santacroce, Susan Pederzoli, Teri Besozzi, Jane Grillo and Edward Powers. 106 A meal fit for a king or a queen The end of a perfect evening 107 CHESS CLUB This year’s graduation leaves a gap in the ranks of one of the most successful teams in M.H.S. history. With only one loss in its four-year span, the team, as well as the club, has been viewed with respect by opposing teams. In competition other than matches, including the 1964 and 1967 Massachusetts State Tournaments, and the 1967 LaSalle Academy Team Tournament, the seniors have shown their prowess. Under the able supervision and enthusiastic encouragement of Nello Allegrezza, the club is developing into one of the best in the state. CHECK!! BOYS ' STATE Henry Guidali, by popular vote was named alternate Good Government Day Representative. 109 ORATORICAL CONTEST The annual American Legion Ora¬ torical Contest was held on January 30, 1967 in the John C. Lynch Auditorium. All members of the senior class sub¬ mitted a paper with some phase of the United States Constitution as a theme. The five finalists were chosen by members of the English Department and included Kathleen Deleso, Thomas Gilfoyle, Hen¬ ry Guidali, James Larson, and Gary Wi- dett. The contestants’ papers were judged on the basis of presence, poise, personality, effectiveness, composition, and oratory. Gary Widett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al¬ bert Widett of 147 Congress Street, was judged as winner. Henry Guidali, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. Guidali of 23 Madden Avenue, was selected by the board of judges as the alternate. On Sunday, March 5, 1967, Widett represented Milford High School and the American Legion Powers Post at the re¬ gional oratorical contest and placed third, in the competition. The band of 1966-67 made a strik¬ ing come-back consisting of veterans and new recruits. New marches were learned and the M.H.S. Tijuana Brass” was heard for miles around during fall- rehearsals. After causing numerous traffic jams in Main Street, the snappy red and white was seen proudly marching down to Fino Field during each home game, promoting school spirit for the driving Scarlets. 112 Mooch and Teri proudly led the way through dust and wind, rain and snow. Our striking senior majorettes smile prettily for George, our only Senior band member. And what could a band be without its high-stepping majorettes? 113 v linn ' Will the real Audio-Visual Club please stand up? AUDIO-VISUAL CLUB The Audio-Visual Club, a newly formed club at Milford High School, consisted of boys who were in¬ terested in learning skills of a mechanical nature. These boys aided Mr. Sweeney in taking pictures and running projectors and tape recorders.. Their skills were very helpful during programs and assemblies where these machines were needed. President William White was the leader of this group and he spent countless hours arranging the de¬ tails for programs all over the school. rflw I pIT ' jHH 1 1 . 114 What happens during those Audio-Visual Club meetings? ART CLUB l mi Mr. Brennan and his witty crew of amateur artists have certainly pepped up our Senior year. During the past year members have enjoyed excursions to such scenic places as old Cape Cod and New York. They have done a great job on our yearbook cover and various other odd jobs. Ski Club was organized when we were juniors and has since become one of the most popular clubs in the school. There were more than 50 members who have skied at Hogback Mountain and Pat’s Peak. These dedicated skiers could be seen at 5:30 a.m. on blistering, cold Saturday mornings plodding toward the school burdened with skis, boots, and poles. At M.H.S. we were fortu¬ nate in having excellent coaching, plus the fine co¬ operation of the Adminis¬ tration. This combination gave the players the neces¬ sary spirit, enthusiasm and desire to give their all” for Milford High! On the following pages, we bring you the highlights of our Athletic Year and we hope they express the enthusiastic participation of our teams, our coaches and our cheerleaders. The season, however, was much better than the record indicates. The spirit, determination, and pride of the 66” Scarlets were excellent throughout the season. This feeling of pride exemplified itself in the Auburn, Webster, and Westwood games, and especially in the Franklin and Wayland games. In the two latter games Milford played the number 1 and number 2 team in the state. The final game of our senior year, held on Thanksgiving Day, ended the season on a victorious note. The Scarlets completely routed Westwood 40-8. This game saw six Scar¬ lets in the scoring column led by seniors Fred Tieuli with a 90 yard punt return, Pete Pessotti with an 85 yard kickoff return, and John Costantino with a 30 yard touchdown pass reception. We would like to thank the excellent coaching staff, headed by John Calagione and assistant coaches Paul Scagnelli, Joseph Stoico and Michael Brita, for the time and effort they so patiently administered during our four years in high school. 123 M.H.S. Basketball team BASKETBALL The basketball team of M.H.S. 1966-67 was outstanding for their strong effort and never say die” attitude, a credit to their new coach, David Hayes. Coach Hayes increased his team with proper attitude and determination, and the Scarlets followed his fine leader¬ ship, as evidenced in the team winning respect, admiration and support of their fellow students. The Scarlets never lost heart during the entire season, despite a disappointing record of 4-14 and went into every game with high hopes. Co-Captains for this year were Gary Widett and Steven Kedski, both of whom cooperated with Coach Hayes in keeping the spirit high all season. Frank Campagnone, Ed Ackerman and Ducky” Aldrich were top scorers. The shooting of Jim Larson, the ball handling of Joe Antonellis and Joe Plicta, the hustle of Carl Spe- roni, the rebounding of Steve Kedski and Joe Szady, and the all around playing of Gary Widett all combined made the Scarlets a fighting team to the finish. Coach Hayes proved to be an excellent mentor and we wish him the best of luck and success in future years. 125 What a racket we have going at Milford High! TENNIS The newly formed Tennis Club became a popular student activity in our Senior year. Club members met at the town park tennis courts twice each week, where they practiced under the supervision of Mr. David Hayes. The team held numerous practice sessions and several meets with neighboring towns. The highlight of the season was the twilight match with Bel¬ lingham High. It was particularly sweet for Mr. Hayes to play this team and renew old acquaintances. Plans for the spring matches look good and the team is dusting off rackets as we go to press. 126 Martin serves up another good one. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Wait a minute you’re on my side! The girls basketball team ended its first season under the direction of Miss Mary Ann Deletti. The girls fought hard all season but did not frequently find a winning combination. In every contest they played a hustling, hard fought battle which provided an exciting game all year long. They finished with a 2-8 record which was due to lack of experience. Captain Diane Tieuli is the only senior leaving the team this year; there should be a good nucleus to build around next year. Coach Mary Ann Deletti shows Captain Diane Tieuli the ropes. 127 CHEERLEADERS Our cheerleaders were always sure to make the scene, whether it be on the basket¬ ball court, the gridiron, or in the auditorium for a rally. Our senior boys never lacked the undying support of fans thanks to our pep¬ py, hard-working cheerleaders. One question the cheerleaders were sure to answer just by their presence was Where is the action? Captain Peggy bids farewell, leaving the many memories of her numerous practice sessions. 128 And when the team is down and out, we’ll cheer them on to victory. From left: Sandy Besozzi, Frani Catella, Susan Covino, Debbie Dominici, Karen Balian, Marianne Iacovelli, Sheila Alphonse, Nancy Giacomuzzi, Frani Niro, and Captain Peggy Boccasile, kneeling. Our seniors, Captain Peg and Karen pose in their classy new uniforms in Sheila’s absence. 129 CROSS COUNTRY This year our Harriers were more successful than in recent years by winning two out of eight confer¬ ence meets and placing fourth in the Central Mass. Conference meet and second in the area. Our two outstanding senior runners, Paul Borghi and Tom Derderian, placed ninth and fifteenth re¬ spectively in the C.M.C. meets and fourth and ninth, in reverse order, in the neighborhood meet. In our victorious dual meets, against Clinton and Shrewsbury, Borghi, Derderian, and Richard Badis, a Sophomore, placed one, two, and three, respectively. The team was paced by such seniors as Jim Larson, Joe Grillo, Richard Cooper, Martin Knust Graichen, Souren Alexanian, and John Speroni. 130 Wins by a nose! Go get ’em Scarlets! A group of five students from M.H.S. along with Mr. Di Battista as their advisor were the guests of students from Waltham Voca¬ tional High School on March 13, 1967. On March 15, the students from Waltham visited Milford High. Following a tour of our school, lunch was served at the Memorial School Cafeteria. During the course of the afternoon, the students, along with St. Mary’s Exchange Students, toured Draper Corp. They were then given free time which was spent bowling at the Milford Ten Pin. For dinner they returned to the school cafeteria. Guest sepakers included Chairman of Selectman, Louis Bertonazzi; Francis Fitzpatrick, Fr. Manahan, Mr. Brucato, Mr. Raftery, and Mr. Cullen. Each member of the Waltham committee received a kit containing the M.H.S. Scarlet”, Milford Town Report, M.H.S.S.A. Constitution, and the Milford Town Warrant. Because of inclement weather the Waltham group was unable to attend the Milford Town Meeting. And what’s on your mind, David? Quit posing and get down to business! Dickie, your mouth is opened, again! 2 Cheer up John, it might work someday! Do it my way or else! Yes, Peter, believe it or not, it’s a book. BOOK FAIR The Book Fair, held in the Auditorium and sponsored by the O. L. I., made ac¬ cessible to Milford High students a great number of paperback books on subjects ranging from Shakespeare to sports. Held for two days, the Book Fair with its out¬ standing variety of books caused many a student to beg or borrow money for just one more book”. The great supply of books which the O. L. I. received for the Fair rapidly dwindled, but every attempt to procure books desired by the students was made. The O. L. I. realized a sub¬ stantial profit from the Fair, which, al¬ though the first of its kind to be held at Milford High, was a great success. 3 Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow Now you, too, can have beautiful eyes like these On Tuesday evening, April 11, Milford High School presented its 38th annual show, Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow,” at the John C. Lynch Auditorium. The story opened with the dapper dancing teacher, Ike Crane, (Fortunato Maressa) arriving at the Sleepy Hollow School for Young Ladies. Shortly there¬ after, he met Kathy VanTassel (Frances Trotta), the music teacher, and Tom Bones (Richard McGrath), the physical education instructor and Kathy’s boy¬ friend. Ike became an instant success with the girls by persuading Dean Roberts (Barbara Tominsky) to let the girls have dances and invited the boys of Hudson Academy, headed by Dean Alston (Paul Borghi). In the meantime, Ike fell for Kathy, but was too shy to tell her how he felt. Tom became infuriated when he dis¬ covered that Kathy had fallen for Ike and decided to scare Ike out of town. He got a village boy (Abram Rosenfeld) to help him in scaring Ike into believing that the ghost of the Headless Horseman really existed. However, he told Ike what Tom had planned and they in turn scared Tom Bones out of town. In the end, Ike won Kathy and every thing ended happily ever after. In the middle of the play there was a flashback to the original legend depicting a scene with Ichebod Crane, the school master, and four small urchins, (Diane Tieuli, Valerie Giardini, Arline Kleiman, and Paula DeMarchi). A gift certificate was presented to Mr. Lancisi after the play. fir! r. - - Hi ■ M . MBBB JPM ML Taste good??? NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION Culminating its year of activities, the Milford High School Chapter of the National Honor Society pre¬ sented an induction ceremony for the twenty-eight newly elected members May 12, 1967. Led by President Thomas Gilfoyle, the members and candidates for induc¬ tion filed into the auditorium, where parents, students, and mem¬ bers of the faculty witnessed an impressive program. Having been welcomed by the president, the audience heard speeches on Char¬ acter, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. After selections by the Milford High School Band, the Glee Club, and Les Petites Chanteuses, the group, twenty-eight members richer, proceeded to a reception in the cafeteria. 6 Sing along with Ben. Brennan and Mrs. Rachel Kellett. More than five hundred pieces completed by students during the school year were dis¬ played in this show. An arts and crafts col¬ lection prepared by the class for Exceptional children, a theme of ships from Milford High, and varied media from the elementary grades highlighted the exhibit. The Advanced Art Workshop concentrated a group effort toward the success of this showing and revealed itself in the form of junk sculpture , pop renderings, and in¬ dividual oil paintings. This truly unique showing was the result of many hours of hard work, as well as field trips devoted to sketching and gathering material for ideas. Many art students participated in the ex¬ hibit, and one of the greatest rewards of their contributions was the thrill of seeing their own presentations on display. Even the prettiest smile won’t hide this hem line. 7 AWARDS Fred Tieuli receives his award. NIGHT One of the highlights of the even¬ ing was selections from the Glee Club. Would you believe our group had 25% fewer cavities? Hey, wait a minute, kids, this is no time for a protest march. Moments to Remember” was the theme, and another memory was added to these moments”, as the Senior Hop was held at the Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis on June 5, 1967. Coming two days before graduation, the Hop was filled with spirit, as the class danced to music, ranging from Moments to Remember” to Hang On Sloopy”. Whether seated at tables decorated with red and white flowers, dancing to the varied tunes provided by Jerry Secco and his orchestra, or strolling under the stars by the swim¬ ming pool, the class was conscious that their high school days were coming to an end. Excitement rose as the girls, in their chiffon, satin, and sequins, filed past the bandstand as a queen was selected. When Her Majesty Terrie Delfanti was crowned, attended by her Court, including Nancy Falvey, Jenni¬ fer Oliveri, Jan Macchi, and Mary DelSignore, they were admired by their classmates and the guests, which in¬ cluded Mr. Espanet and Mrs. Hayes, class advisors. Despite several attempts to see a member of the Class of 67 walking at the bottom of the pool, when the even¬ ing ended, all was well, as the couples departed with their red and white pro¬ grams and decorated goblets to remind them of their Senior Hop. Too close for comfort??? 11 ♦ = Speeding years too soon have brought us here to say good¬ bye.” SENIOR CLASS NIGHT On June 6, 1967, in the John C. Lynch Auditorium, the edition of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy was dedicated to our principal, Mr. Paul F. Raftery. In an impressive ceremony the presentation was made by Mona Chianese, editor-in- chief of the O. L. I., and Ronald Santacroce, class president. Santacroce opened the program with a welcome and pledge of allegiance by the audience and the members of the yearbook staff. During the program two selections were offered by the glee club: America Our Heritage and You’ll Never Walk Alone. Valerie Giardini was soloist and Mrs. Hayes was pianist. The dedication was made in a candlelight ceremony led by Mona and Ronnie. The highlight of the evening was the delivery of the principle address by Dr. Joseph E. Murray, a distinguished alumnus of Milford High School. Dr. Murray is presently chief plastic surgeon at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and on the staff of Children’s Hospital Medical Center and assistant clinical professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Murray high¬ lighted the evening with his impressive speech. Mona presented the first copy of the 1967 edition of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy to Mr. Raftery. Mona and Ronnie begin the solemn candlelight ceremony. The title of Dr. Murray’s address was The Value of a High School Education”. In his remarks, Dr. Murray said, an educa¬ tion is possible to achieve anywhere”. In the streets, in the factory, in libraries, in offices, in the schools. But, unquestionably, in this day when technical know¬ how is so important and the knowledge explosion is active, the most effective education is obtained formally in school and uni¬ versity activity.” Dr. Murray stated that the true value of an education is not financial reward, important as that may be. The value of an edu¬ cation is to discover and keep the mind fresh and open, the inquisitive, questioning, naive, alert, appealing, winning outlook on life.” It may appropriately be called childlike’, not with a sense of derision, but with appreciation for the beauty and complexity of life.” The mind of the adult can build only as high as the foundation contained in youth will allow.” Dr. Murray mentioned four teachers during his high school days, Dr. Ryan, Miss Ford, Miss Pianca, and Mr. Moran, from each of whom he learned a meaningful lesson of life. Dr. Murray finished by saying that education is not preparation for life, it is life itself, the only life that counts is when we are developing and learning. The advice of Sachel Paige of ' not look¬ ing behind you because someone might be gaining on you’ is true. Unless we are going forward, we are automatically falling backwards because no one nor any institution can stand still”. Mr. Raftery rises to accept his yearbook while the dedication is recited by the O. L. I. Com¬ mittee. 15 Their last moments as seniors. m l 4 4jl38i WMLp ail The proud parents of 177 proud graduates. Knustgraichen 1 ; 0m J l ■ f i Our hardworking baseball team—Hey! where’s Mr. Stoico! BASEBALL One out, one to go. Despite a disappointing record of 6 wins and 12 losses, the Milford High School baseball team played much better ball than what their record showed. The team, under the supervision of coach Joe Stoico, manifested an untiring effort throughout the entire season. The Scarlets played their best during the second half of the season. The squad retaliated from earlier defeats against Wachusett, Maynard, Northbridge, and Marlboro, but were downed by Clinton in the second contest by a 3-2 score. Also to the dismay of the team was the loss of the town championship to St. Mary’s— the first such loss in over twenty years. The hitting of Seniors John Crivello, Andy Anderson, and Joe Rocha, led the offensive attack for the Scarlets George Marachian, Ron Santacroce, and Bill Rideout played well on the defense. The pitching of Dave Cavazza, Paul Bruno, and Ducky Aldrich looked promising for the coming year. Next year, the team will have seven starters which will leave a substantial nucleus to build around. 18 Action!!! Proud as ever. GIRLS ' SOFTBALL This year under the new and very capable leadership of Miss Mary Ann Deletti the girl’s softball team com¬ pleted a hard and well-fought season. The girls compiled a dissappointing 1-8 record, the win being over St. Mary’s in an extra inning contest, but they played heads up ball all season. The lack of wins could best be attributed to the green out-field that Coach Deletti had to work with; but this progressed all season as did the infield. Although graduation took only one player, the loss of Diane Tieuli will be felt next year both in basketball and softball. Diane came up with some .clutch hits and plays that made every game exciting. Cheryl Miller got most of the pitching assignments this year due to the lack of pitchers. Barbara Altieri took over the catching assignments left vacant from gradua¬ tion last year. The outlook for the team next year is bright—the girls will be more experienced. Miss Deletti and Diane have that far away look in their eyes 19 Now, fellows, like this. GOLF The Milford High Golf team had an extremely prosperous year. The team was guided by Mr. Scagnelli, our most intel¬ lectual teacher-coach. With Bob Johnson as captain of the team, along with Ed Gonzales, Bill Var- relli, Tom Gilfoyle, Fran Sartain, Bob Morrow, Mike Laronga, and Wally Costa, the team could be nothing but successful. They finished with an 8-5 record in their favor. The seniors will be missed, but the outlook for next year is promising. Coach Scagnelli and Captain Bob Johnson. One, two, three, fore! 20 We shall overcome. TRACK The Milford High Track team showed the push and persistance which Coach Cal- agione inspired. The spirit, alone, of the Scarlets helped them considerably in gaining extra points. Fr ed Tieuli scored 16 points in his three events in the first three meets. During the Scarlet-Shrewsbury meet, Fred pulled a muscle in the 100 yd. dash and could not continue. Despite this injury, however, school spirit and team loyalty gave him a second in the 440 yd. dash. In the one-mile run, Joe Grillo and Souren Alexanian gave their opponents a good run. In the two mile run, Thomas Derderian and James Larson put forth their best at all times. Mr. Calagione may be proud of his crew and rightly so, for team spirit was mani¬ fested throughout the season. High enough, guys??? 21 Our future teachers? What is the world coming to? FUTURE TEACHERS ' TEA President Fran presents a gift to Miss Deletti, Club Advisor. The Future Teachers’ Tea was once again a great success this year under the leadership of President Frannie Trotta. Their combined efforts resulted in a most enjoy¬ able afternoon. Highlighting the event was the presentation of gifts to the club advisor and departing teachers. 22 Ah, c’mon Mr. White, it won’t bite! To the O.L.I. Committee and members of the junior class who helped in the prepara¬ tion of this supplement, I wish to express my deepest appreciation and sincerest thanks. Mona Chianese Edit or-in-C hief THE END
