The Oak, Lily and Ivy 1966 Milford, Massachusetts Oak, Lily and Ivy presents The MHS Class of 1966 The first time in any yearbook! A Cast of 169! Four years in the making! CREDITS Prologue . 4 Production Crew . 6 Cast. 19 ACT I Action in the field. 82 ACT II On the home front.110 Patrons .120 3 Mr. Anthony Giorgi 4 IN DEDICATION During his years at Milford High School, he has manifested to all students a spirit of cooperation, understanding and knowledge that has helped to make our scholastic career both enjoyable and rewarding; in view of this, we, the Class of 1966, dedicate our edition of the Oak, Lily and Ivy to Mr. Anthony Giorgi, a devoted teacher and friend. 5 Production Crew The production crew at work Joseph Tosches Principal IN APPRECIATION Because of his interest in our work, his understanding of our problems, and his personal courage, we were glad to learn of his gallant recovery and sub¬ sequent return to Milford High School. We greatly appreciate the direction he has given us in making our years here more productive and meaningful. 8 During the summer of 1965 a new name was added to the faculty list when Miss Mary Cronin changed her name to Mrs. Georgi. She took for better or for worse our dedicated, Mr. Anthony Giorgi, in holy matrimony. This year also saw several of our graduates of recent years return to take their place on the other side of the desk. Mr. Leonard Oliveri, Mr. Melvin Rota, and Mr. William Atherton joined our faculty in 1965. To exemplify the ecumenical spirit Mr. David Hayes, a graduate of St. Mary’s came along to join us. Mr. Brown and Mr. Brennan, the latter a member of the Sein Fein, added to the luster of our teaching staff. 9 These seven outstanding men our school committee contribute a great deal to Milford’s Public School System: Mr. Thomas Cullen; Mr. Francis Fitzpatrick; Superintendent David I. Davoren; Attorney Pacifico DeCapua; Mr. Robert McGinnis; Mr. Ernest Lombardi, Chairman; and Mr. Michael DeCaesare. SCHOOL COMMITTEE Superintendent David I. Davoren has dedicated many years to the Milford School System. - Milford High School Principal’s office could not have been left in better hands than those of Miss Peirina Ramelli, a truly fine secretary. Hard-working is our own Guidance Office Secretary, Mrs. Michael P. Visconti. Mrs. Anita Curran and Mrs. Serephony Kalunian are Mr. Davoren’s two able and dedicated secretaries. M ' Mf II Signor Anthony Villani heads the Language Department; his colleagues are Mr. Gerard Sweeney, Mrs. Doris Driscoll, Madame Marie Hayes, and Mademoiselle Mary Burns, all ranked symmetrically about the department head. M.H.S.’s answer to The Nurses, Mrs. Ger¬ trude Healey, a truly competent nurse. Could this be the reason why students enjoy being sick? Our music and art departments are under fine supervision in the hands of Mr. Charles Culler, Mr. Benjamin Lancisi and Mr. Clark F. Brennan. A smiling Mr. Paul Scagnelli, Commercial Department head, is surrounded by his busi¬ ness associates: Mrs. Beatrice Klein, Mr. Melvin Rota, Miss Josephine Calarese, Miss Barbara Streich, Miss Mary Lee, and Miss Margaret Pyne. English Department Under the supervision of these fine scholars headed by Miss Philomena Colavita and assisted by Mr. J. Gerard Sweeney, Miss Dorothy Callahan, Miss Marie Cenedella, Mr. James Brown, Mrs. Doris Driscoll and Mrs.- Earlene Cornell, making grammatical errors becomes a chajlenge to the students. Mrs. Mary Giorgi of our English Depart¬ ment and Miss Ann Pasquino of our Math Department are two fine examples of why students should want to stay in school. Science Department With help from Mr. Leo White, Mr. John Calagione, Mr. Nello Allegrezza, Mr. David Atherton and Mr. Charles Espanet, Milford High should not have any trouble in pro¬ ducing anything from astronauts to physicists. Math Department Department Head Mr. Nello Allegrezza finds Michael Noferi, Mr. David Hayes and Mr. Leonard Oliveri great assets to our Math Department with Mr. John Calagione and Mr. Anthony Giorgi together. Social Studies Department If it’s History, Geography or Current Events you want to argue about, consult Mr. Gabriel DiBattista, Dept, head, or his capable cast of colleagues Miss Kathleen McCarthy, Mr. Leonard Oliveri, Mr. Charles Espanet, Mr. Michael Noferi and Mr. James Brown. Mr. Philip O’Donnell, Milford High School’s Librarian a great consultant in what books to do for a book report. Physical Ed Department With these fine men at the helm of sports activities, what could possibly go wrong with our school physically”: Mr. Joseph Stoico, Head Coach Baseball, Athletic Director John DeSalvia, Mr. John Calagione, Head Coach Football, Mr. Leo Raftery, Ass’t. Football, Mr. Michael Brita, Freshman Football, Mr. Anthony Giorgi, Girls Baseball, and Mr. Thomas Cronin, Head Coach Basketball? Each fall the members are selected from the ranks of their fellow students to serve on the committee. This main body is divided into sub-committees that handle such features as literary activities and finances. Under Joseph Calabrese, current editor, funds are being raised in a number of manners to finance this book: a car-wash, a raffle, a sale of pens, and a food sale. 85 Mr. and Mrs. Brucato receive the greetings of David Crescenzi and Nancy Giacomuzzi. The Line-up at the end of the Grand March. Gail Jackson and Anthony Cafarelli and Nancy Giacomuzzi and David Crescenzi lead the grand march. King Philip never had it so good. The Indian Brave must have turned over in his grave when he saw all the bouffant hairdos. They’d have made such wonderful scalps. JUNIOR PROM The Junior Prom was held on April 19, 1965 at King Philip Ballroom in Wrentham. The usual dance program was garnished by several innovations. Music by Ben Lancisi’s orchestra made the night memorable. The evening was capped by a buffet dinner served just before the close of festivities. 87 Our Editor Joseph Calabrese and Jane Grillo managed to get close enough to the camera. Ben Tocci and Joanne Ian- nitelli also managed a smile. Miss Pasquino thinks that these Radio Hams are O.K. The officers are President Dennis King, Vice President Larry Tassone, Secretary Robert Kenney, Treasurer David Russitti. y THE RADIO CLUB The Radio Club, newly formed this year, is under the supervision of Miss Pasquino. Meet¬ ings, held every Tuesday at 2:30 in room C-12, are called to order by President Dennis King. The general purpose of the club is to pre¬ pare those people, who are interested in ham radios, for either their novice or general licenses. Those going for their novice licenses are taught how to send and receive Morse Code and the fundamentals of the radio. Those going for their general licenses practice their code so that they may increase their speed. The club is also entertained by a number of speakers and they also experiment with elec¬ tronic equipment. 88 Our Future Disc Jockeys? Dave Melpigano are you really graduating with the class of 66” And by the way, where is your tie? STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is a group of students elected by the entire Milford High School student body. These elected students carry on the business of M.H.S.S.A., both financial, legal and policy making. The main purpose is to act as a connecting link between the adminis¬ tration, faculty, and the student body of the Milford High School. Meetings, held in the library on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, are called to order by President, Michael Idarola and supervised by Dr. John DeSalvia. Some of the extra curricular activities sponsored by council are the Harvest Dance, Sadie Hawkins Dance, The March of Dimes Drive, Salvation Army Drive and also the Student Exchange Program. Student Council is made up of a number of committees which help to carry on these func¬ tions and make them ' a success. All members of council are awarded pins and guards at the end of the year, with a na¬ tional pin being awarded to anyone who has been a member of council for four years. Mitch: Now let’s get serious for once and stop fooling around. , M Doc: You took the words right out of my mouth. FRENCH CHORAL GROUP These Juniors and Seniors are Milford High’s answer to the Green Berets. Les Petites Chanteuses, a French Choral Group, was organized this year and is comprised of about forty members. Strictly cultural in purpose, it serves as an opportunity for musical enjoyment and for knowledge of French folk-lore. The first appearance was made at the Christmas pro¬ gram and included two old French carols, a modern ver¬ sion of an old fable and, as an encore, the well known round, Frere Jacques. Mrs. Hayes, the club’s faculty advisor, has shown both patience and determination at the Tuesday afternoon meetings in preparing her young singers for the stage (unfortunately only at the John C. Lynch Auditorium!). Students from all four classes were invited to join, and nine of our own classmates have volunteered their services. Isn’t that right, Pat? Kathy? Lin? Seriously, however, they were greatly appreciated at the Christmas party and will be again at the National Honor Society’s Induction program at the end of the year. The only truly fitting remark about this group’s work is, Tres bien!” The younger, but yet talented, members of this group included the Freshmen and Sophomores. ART CLUB Mr. Brennan is surrounded by such talent that he cannot hide his true emotions! The Art Club, one of Milford High’s newest, has been created for the purpose of fostering the young, but talented, artists of our school. The officers of this organization include, Marilyn Brucato, Paula Salvia, Anne Consoletti, David Consoletti and Robert DePaolo. Clark L. Brennan, the faculty advisor, seems prepared to de¬ fend his future Rembrandts and Picassos against all attacks. Doesn’t he? The members, both Juniors and Seniors, are attracted to the bi-monthly meetings by their desire to learn the technique as well as the appreciation of good art, And even if they do not succeed in reaching this goal, they are satisfied with having fun and enjoying themselves. Of course, these pictures do not do them justice for our artists are shown grouped together, and not in their own pensive and creative moods. Perhaps berets, smocks, and pallettes would be an improvement! Why do Jane, Dave, Pat, Lin, and Diane all look so happy? Maybe they’re picture shy? 91 Just think, our future lies in their hands!! Officers seated in front row are: Secretary, Nancy Klein, Program Chairman, Robert Toochi, Treasurer, Marilyn Brucato. We can almost see their scientific brains working! Lip-smacking, finger-licking good! Marilyn Brucato and Barbara Tominsky display most of the pies on their faces. 92 Just a sample of the delicious Science Club cuisine. Enjoying it, girls?!! Marilyn Brucato and Jan Macchi seem to be having a wonderful, but also messy time. SCIENCE CLUB The Fred A. Metcalf Science Club, under the guidance of Mr. Nello Allegrezza, organized another successful membership this year. Membership is open to both Juniors and Seniors with meetings held twice a month. Its pur¬ pose is to promote an interest in scientific achievement and experimentation. Various members perform experi¬ ments and demonstrations following each business meeting. The big event of the year is the Science Club Outing which is held sometime in the spring. Dances and excur¬ sions of the type previously mentioned are also on the social calendar. The members elected as their officers: Marc Allegrezza, President; Ronald Santacroce, Vice-President; Nancy Klein, Secretary, Marilyn Brucato, Treasurer; Robert Tochi, Program Chairman; Peter Filosa, Social Chairman. Without the careful guidance of Mr. Allegrezza the Science Club could not have grown to what it this year. A lady is lovely when wearing a hat and Joannie is prompted to sing Everything’s coming up sudsy! ” 93 May the best man win without help from the audience. It seems that Mr. Allegrezza should be playing. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club of Milford High was organized this year under the supervision of Mr. Allegrezza. The meetings of the club were again held in room C-12. The purpose of the club meetings is to encourage the members to play matches among themselves and to teach other members the rules and the play of the game. This year the club has won two matches against Bellingham High School and has not been defeated. Mr. Allegrezza hopes to see the schedule expanded in the future to include other area towns. Uxbridge, Northbridge, Nipmuc, King Philip and perhaps Hopedale will be scheduled this year. All may enter state finals if held again this year. Books have been made available and purchased by students interested in the game. 94 These young people took a lot of time and effort to bring forth their speeches in front of parents and fellow students. They are sure to profit by their ambition. William Bibbo, who succeeded in winning the contest, will be Milford High School’s rep¬ resentative in further competition. ORATORICAL CONTEST Before an assembly of all classes, the American Legion Oratorical contestants delivered their speeches in the John C. Lynch Auditorium. The five contestants, William Bibbo, William DiVitto, Barry Heitin, Suzanne Marcus, and Diane Visconti excelled in presenting their orations to the audience. All the essays were excellent and very much patri¬ otic. The contestants were judged by their poise, man¬ ner of delivery, and upon the content of their essay. 95 JKSMS mm Jpgilllyk | k 1 1 - of Whether building a float, or collecting for a charity these Key Club members seem proud of the job they are doing. M.H.S. KEY CLUB The Key Club’s hard working faculty advisor is Dr. John DeSalvia, Guidance Counselor, who has been advisor of the club since its inception in 1963.-This year’s officers are Dick Morrison, President; Ron Santacroce, Vice-Presi¬ dent; Bill Grillo, Treasurer; Bill DiVitto, Secretary; and Lou Nargi, Lt. Governor of Division 3. The club’s main purpose is service: service to school, community, and country. This has been accomplished in several ways. In serving the school, the club has sponsored a Faculty Basketball Game and a scholarship to a deserv¬ ing senior. In serving the community the club has spon¬ sored a float for the Veterans’ Day Parade, helped to col¬ lect for a worthy charity, and brought to the community a college vocal group which performed in a concert. In serving the country, the club bought and installed Ameri¬ can flags in the classrooms to replace the worn ones. The future of the club is hard to predict at this time. It rests entirely with next year’s officers, their imagination and their initiative. These Key Club Officers will certainly make distinguished future Kiwanians. They are, seated, Louis Nargi and Richard Morrison, and standing, William Grillo, Ronald Santacroce, and William DiVitto. 96 BUSINESS SERVICE CLUB w 1 l i l Controlling the use of all the typewriters is this group of industrious students. The Business Service Club, now in its second year at Milford High School, is more active than ever. Mr. Scagnelli and Miss Streich of the Business Depart¬ ment direct the work of the members which consists mostly of assisting the faculty members of the high school in their clerical duties. In addition the Club has undertaken many worth while projects. The members worked diligently to raise money for the annual scholarship which is given to a member deemed most deserving of the award. The success of the Club’s activities can be measured by the favorable reports made by the faculty. The Club has come a long way since its inception only two years ago and now has a membership of over fifty. The students enjoy this work experience and will find it beneficial when they enter the business world. The mem¬ bers of the Club look forward to many end-of-the-year activities which are being planned by the committees. Dedicated to the purpose of assisting the faculty at Milford High is this hard-working crew. FRANCE % LE CERCLE FRANCAIS Les chefs sont: Patricia Prece, President; Claudia Saracino, Program Chairman; Diane Visconti, Treasurer; Miss Burns, Club Advisor; Kathleen Granholm, Secretary; Cheryl Furbush, Vice-President. The French Club, under the supervision of Mademoiselle Mary Burns, was organized in December 1965, when club officers were elected unlike previous years, Juniors taking third year French have been invited to join the objective of this club is to secure for its members a better understanding of the French language, its literature, and its customs. During the Christmas season, a party was held for the members. French Christmas Carols along with la cuisine francaise” proved enjoyable to all. Plans for an April in Paris” are now being formed. This activity should be both pleasant and interesting pour les membres.” Les beaux garcons et les belles lilies du Cercle Francais. 98 A DANTE CLUB Willi Eyes on the camera,” insisted Maureen Tosches as she sat for the Dante Club. This fine upstanding group of linguists is known as the Dante Club. The primary objective of the club is the pro¬ motion of Italian language and culture. Instead of holding formal after-school meetings, the appreciation of the Italian way of life is enhanced in the atmosphere and en¬ vironment of the Italian classroom through the efforts of II Signor Villani. The singing of Italian melodies and the study of prominent Italian masters, including the out¬ standing authors and musicians of past centuries, have broadened our awareness of a truly rich culture. The officers of the Dante Club are Patricia Prece, President, Suzanne Marcus, Vice Presi¬ dent, Louise Bianchi, Treasurer, and Paula Salvia, Secretary. The compassionate faces of our future nurses assure us that we shall be in competent hands. FUTURE NURSES CLUB When Kathy Consigli, Mary Villani, Susan Tosches, Marilyn Marcone, Susan Derderian, and Pasqua Di Camillo, shown here with Mrs. Healey, become full-fledged nurses the hospitals had better clear their halls. The purpose of Milford High Future Nurses’ Club is to help girls who are interested in nursing as a career. Mrs. Gertrude Healey, R.N. is the new Future Nurses’ Club advisor. She assists the girls in choosing hospitals to visit, deciding upon projects, and other activities. During the school year we have speakers from different schools of nursing. This helps each girl make her decision upon the specific type of nursing she is interested in. Among our different guest speakers was a male nurse of a practical nursing school, and a Navy Nurse, who both helped us to understand the wide varieties of nursing that have developed in recent years. On holidays we have projects involving old age homes, children’s hospitals, and other institutes for the underprivileged at Christmas time; a generous amount of money was presented to the Salvation Army for the needy families in the Milford area. We also bought many games for the children’s ward at Milford Hospital. The Future Nurses’ Club plans to keep on helping people. 100 We hope our future teachers never have to contend with the antics which they per¬ formed at Milford High. The Future Teachers’ Club was organized at Milford High School many years ago. The purpose of the club is to make those students who plan to teach aware of the various fields of study. The meetings are held in room A-l on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Our advisor, Mrs. Giorgi has helped us this year to restore parliamentary procedure by which our meetings are run. Also initia¬ ted by the club this year was a $50 scholarship which will be awarded to a member of the senior class. The club members are both boys and girls from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. We are very glad this year to say that the male mem¬ bership has increased. The club members this year have gained a vast amount of knowledge from speak¬ ers, panel discussions and films. FUTURE TEACHERS ' CLUB Frances Trotta, Nancy Giacomuzzi, Charlene Antonellis, and Joanne Mazzarelli, officers of the Future Teachers’ Club seem very happy with their new advisor, Mrs. Giorgi. pti if its aaswiaj Ik w 101 When these people play at once, you can’t help but listen. THE BAND The latest in a long line of fine musical organiza¬ tions — Milford High is proud of the tradition the band has created over the years. 102 j Will class plays ever be the same without these nat¬ ural born actors??? The departing seniors, rabble-rousers,” will never be forgot¬ ten because of their talents. (But we’re not saying in what??) The Milford High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Ben C. Lancisi and Mr. Charles W. Culler, is a credit to our school. The hours put into practice pay off handsomely with each band appearance. During each extra period the band rehearses either in the bandroom or high stepping up and down the town park. At every football game the band adds a touch of true class to each halftime performance, and lifts spirits with many lively songs. Many snappy street routines are also executed in the several parades. Although graduation will leave a good-sized dent in number, we are confident the band will carry on its high degree of perfection! Rumors have it that Mr. Lancisi will lay down his baton this year. We hope that this is not true. We can wish him only the best of all fine things and the prayer goes with him that his future will hold all the melody of his past. Why shouldn’t we have a good band with this fine looking group leading the way?? 103 What would the United Press International say if it saw this Group??? THE SCARLET The Scarlet was organized in 1964-1965. It is directed by the National Honor Society and is supervised by Mr. Charles Brucato. Editor-In-Chief Diane Visconti News Editor Rachel Kellett Sports Editor Charles Canali Business Manager . Jame s Cox The newspaper is issued about four times a year. The Scarlet informs everyone of all school activities, new teachers, games, and of course the latest news buzzing around the halls of M.H.S. 104 The cheerleaders greet the faculty members as they prepare to dash out onto the court. FACULTY BASKETBALL The report of the Fearless Faculty basketball game can¬ not find a spot on the sports pages of our book for rather obvious reasons. Actually braving the dangers of cardiac complications, rheumatic knees, and ponderous paunches, the men teachers did well in just showing up. The varsity learned more about basketball in one night than they had previously found out in their collective lifetimes. A cardinal rule for success for the faculty was to know the referee. Our man Casey found out that you cannot be tripped by a faculty member without his getting two shots. Pictorial evidence in the lower right hand corner of this page shows a faculty member, unidentified except for his plaid shorts, committing mayhem on Casey. Who was penalized? The unidentified faculty member got two shots, missed those and was promptly given several more. Casey also got an F” in U.S. History on the following day. Something new in the man’s basketball garb is in¬ troduced. Look at those knees, those arms, that follow through. Casey never knew what hit him. Coach Cronin was of course the high scorer for the faculty but he had a lot of help from Mr. Brennan who showed up in spite of a rash of injuries. The scouts in the crowd were unanimous that the Celtics could use a couple of these men. Names like Russell, Walker and Alcidnoor were not to be mentioned in the same breath as Giorgi, Hayes, Noferi, White and Espanet. Contract difficulties alone will probably keep Messrs. Brita, Brown and Santacroce from joining the professional ranks. Actually the game was a social and financial success, if it did noth¬ ing to add to the annals of sporting achievement. The Key Club raised a lot of money, the doctors had a few extra patients, the cheerleaders made a lot of noise, and Mr. Olivieri twisted his knee. Mr. Giorgi starred with some remarkable shooting. His Milford High School Girls’ Basketball Team cheered him through the echo. 106 Mr. Brita and Coach Cronin look on as Mr. Espanet receives a little attention for the cheerleaders. Mr. Espanet loses an arm in this pic¬ ture, but notice the leg action — the number on his shirt is not his age. Top — What a piece of work is man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how admirable . . . in action how like an angel . . . the beauty of the world . . . the paragon of animals.” The Greeks probably also had a word for them, but it may be better unsaid. Rachael Kellett, Karen Balian, Peggy Boccasile, Nancy Giacomuzzi, Marianne Iacovelli, Frannie Catella, and in the center of them is our Captain, Bette Ann Besozzi. CHEERLEADERS Pep is a word often associated with a cheerleader. We feel M.H.S.’s cheerleaders are among the peppiest. Thse girls have had many long, hard and sometimes hot practices, changing words and formations of their cheers in order to promote enthusiasm in the crowd. Although their efforts do not always bring the Scarlets a victory, we must admit they try their best. Pep, vitality, energy, and vigor never cease to follow these girls whether they are at a football game at Fino Field, a basketball game in St. Mary’s Gym or competing for a trophy at David Prouty, or Uxbridge High School Cheerleaders Tournaments. The pep and vitality of our departing Seniors Rachael and Bette Ann will surely be remembered through the years. 109 Action in the Field Leading the Way... in Well, boys, you can’t win them all! VARSITY FOOTBALL The Milford High School football team had a gloomy season this year. The Scarlets’ 0-7-1 record can hardly be blamed on the ability of the team or of its coaching staff. The Scarlets demonstrated their skill on the gridiron many times during the fall season. Though the seasons’ results can be questioned, the sense of sportsmanship that the coaches and the team displayed during the entire sea¬ son cannot be questioned. The most thrilling play of the season was in the Mil¬ ford vs. Marlboro game. The Scarlets, trailing 16-0, made a spectacular comeback when Dave Crescenzi completed an 85-yard pass to Joe Calabrese. Calabrese and Stan Aldrich made a touchdown apiece, and Mitch Iadarola made another two. Despite the efforts of the Scarlets the final score was 28-24 in favor of Marlboro. A major disadvantage during the season was the num¬ erous injuries suffered by the Scarlets. This can be held partially responsible for the dismal season. Also the Thanksgiving Day game was eliminated after vain at¬ tempts were made to find an opponent. Uxbridge, the usual adversary decided not to play Milford this year. Though the Scarlets had a disappointing season, Head Coach John Calagione and Assistant Coaches Paul Scag- nelli, Joseph Stocio, and Leo Raftery managed to keep a high morale in the team throughout the entire season. In the early days of fall, the Milford High School Cross Country Team under the observation and sur¬ veillance of Tom Cronin was organized. Despite the team’s devoted efforts, the squad completed the sea¬ son with a rather disappointing record of seven losses. Paul Borghi, one of the outstanding distance run¬ ners of the area, placed seventh in the Wachusetts Invitational Meet this year and received a trophy for his endeavors. Paul will return next year with Ray Zaccarino, Joe Grillo, Tom Derderian, and Ray Bowen, some other fleet-footed Juniors. A graduating Senior Charlie Canali, will be remem¬ bered by this year’s team for his speed but especially for his advice and leadership. Coach Cronin has a bright outlook for the future and anticipates a good season next fall. With Paul Borghi in his prime, and the veteran Sophomore and Juniors returning, the team will have plenty of op¬ portunity. The team has good prospects for next year as there are only two senior members who are depart¬ ing. Coach Cronin will surely miss the determination and drive of Charlie Canali and Jim Conley. 116 The girls basketball team finished an encouraging season last February with a 5 and 7 record under the coaching supervision of Mr. Giorgi. Leading the team in scoring were Linda Karst, Linda Bacchiochi, and Cheryl Miller. The other Senior members of the team were Kris Hall, Cheryl Furbush, and Fie Kingston. The greatest victory for the Scarlettes was over St. Mary’s 30-21. The closest game was over Hopkinton 37-32. This year was the best of the two years that Mr. Giorgi has coached. Good prospects for next year are expected in Diane Tieuli, Candy Hutchinson, and Barbara Altieri. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Mr. Giorgi gives pre-game instructions to Co-Captains Linda Karst and Kris Hall. 117 The 1965 Basketball team lines up as follows: John Watson, Robert Tocchi, Charles Canali, Ben Tocci, and Francis Larson out front, with Casey, Tieuli, Coach Cronin, Antonellis, Pessotti and Widett in back row. BASKETBALL The Milford High Scarlets ended this years season with a 2-16 record. Under the supervision of Coach Cronin, the team succeeded in attaining the respect and support of their fans despite the disappointing record. Charlie Canali with a quick eye and a good aim was the star scorer for the season. Ben Tocci, John Watson, and Fran Larson drew the attention of the fans in their all-out efforts; and, Bobby Tocchi, in his first year out for the team played remarkably well, especially in the fifth game with Northbridge where he scored 20 points and was the leading Scarlet scorer. A special event, the Milford High School Faculty Game added spirit to the season. The game was put on by the Milford High School Key Club, and was held in the St. Mary’s Gym. The game was witnessed by 750 enthusiastic sports fans. Every faculty member managed to score at least one point with the help of referees. Richie Piergustavo and Chick” Sayles. Tom Cronin scored highest for the Fearless Faculty” and John Watson scored highest for the Scarlets. The victory came to the Scarlets who won 48-45. Although the season held few victories, exfitement was not lacking and neither was the fighting spirit of the Scarlets and of their coach Tom Cronin. Tom Cro¬ nin can be congratulated for keeping the team in the high spirits that they were in from the beginning of the season to the closing game. 118 Faculty game; notice the knees buckling on good old number 13. SWINGING HIGH On Wednesday evening, March 9, Milford High School presented its 37th annual show, Swinging High,” at the John C. Lynch Auditorium. The story opens at Cooper High School where the out¬ going principal, Mr. Carlyle (Barry Heitin), is making final preparations for his retirement. However, Mr. Carlyle is not the only one making preparations, for the students of Cooper High are busily making arrangements for the Polly Doodle Day festivities, namely a football game and dance. The plot of the play was to transform the class brain, Connie (Gail Jackson), into the usual fickle female by mak¬ ing her fall for Bill (Richard Lemish), and making the success of Polly Doodle Day a reality in spite of the stiff- collared Mr. McDuff. A plaque was presented to Mr. Lancisi after the play. Director Lancisi and assistant Culler discuss play while Charlene, Jim and Tony look on. The Midland League Champs BASEBALL Milford High School had a very successful base¬ ball season this year winning fifteen games and losing six. Under the excellent supervision of Coach Joe Stoico, the Scarlets captured the title of the Midland League Championship and won the Town Series, which it has won from St. Mary’s for many years. By an ironical twist of fate though, the Scarlets were eliminated by St. Mary’s from the State Tournament. Although this year’s record was not as well as last year’s, the entire team put through their best efforts for the school. Milford . The Milford High School Golf Team, coached by Paul Scagnelli, finished well this season with a record of five wins and five losses. Led by captain Dick Lemish, George Belforti, and Bill Bibbo, the senior members of the squad, the boys started the season slow but gained momentum and ended the season with three victories. Playing at the home course, Saddle Hill Country Club in Hopkinton, the team defeated the Hope- dale, Auburn, and Hopkinton clubs. The other tri- umps were gained at the expense of the teams of Holliston and Millis. Mr. Scagnelli expects an even better season next year with six members, Bob Johnson, Tom Gilfoyle, Ed Gonzales, Steve Comolli, Mike Laronga, Bob Moro and Gary Widett returning. Coach Cal takes time out for a pose with his able crew. TRACK AND FIELD The Milford High School Track and Field team went down to defeat seven times and came up vic¬ torious three times. The team defeated arch rival St. Mary’s with a score of 54J4 to 40J . In the Central Massachusetts Conference, Milford placed seventh out of nine strong teams; all three of Mil¬ ford’s points were scored by Fred Tieuli. Fred reaped well over 100 points for the team. However, the team, was paced by such seniors as Bob DePaolo, Stan Aldrich, Mitch Iadarola, Art Bar- santi, Jim Crivello, and Fran Masciarelli. DePaolo scored consistently in the shot put; Aid- rich ran the 220 and 440 yard dashes and the broad jump. Iadarola helped DePaolo gather points in the shot put. Art Barsanti proved to be strong competi¬ tion in the 440 yard dash, broad jump, and discus. Crivello also threw the discus and did the broad jump. Fran Masciarelli ran the 440 yard dash. Aldrich, Masciarelli, and Crivello were the senior members of the outstanding relay team. Coach John Calagione is looking forward to a more victorious season next year with the return of Fred Tieuli, Mike Conn earney, John Speroni, Bob Kenney, and Tom Derderian and Ray Zaccharino. ART EXHIBITION The long preparation, the elimination of countless art pieces, and a true effort on the parts of both supervisors and students helped to make Milford High School’s first annual art show a tremendous success. The varied art forms exhibited were submitted by students from all grade levels in the Milford public school systems. Although prizes were not awarded, a sense of accomplishment was felt by all participants, and we are looking forward to next year’s adventure into the realm of art. Mr. Brennan discusses a subject with a friend. Don and Paul also like what they see. 1 s Editor Joe Calabrese presents the 1966 edition of the O. L. I. to Mr. Anthony Giorgi, as Mrs. Giorgi and Barry Heitin look on. The dedication of the Yearbook of the class of 66” was held in the John C. Lynch Auditorium on May 29, with all seniors in attendance. Joe Calabrese, editor-in-chief, presented the yearbook to Mr. Giorgi, the honored guest. A proud Mr. Giorgi approached the seniors rather nervously, and proceeded to enlighten them on their pursuit in life. He stressed education and gave the points of view from both the teachers and the students. Mr. Giorgi stated: From the teachers’ point of view, some¬ one once attempted to define education as: .the undefinable process wherein someone, usually older, tries to persuade, cajole, force, propel, or even so much as threaten or trick someone else, usually younger, into the idea that knowledge is pre¬ ferable to ignorance.” He also stated the students’ point of view as: Education is what you have learned after you have forgotten everything you studied in school.” The ceremony was brought to a close with the presentation of the yearbooks to senior class members. Mr. Giorgi delivers his acceptance speech to an eagerly awaiting audience. Marilyn Kaufman accepts the yearbook from the blushing Mr. Giorgi and his lovely wife. FUTURE TEACHERS ' CLUB TEA Teachers’ Tea, an annual event held by the F.T.A., was the usual success, with all the trimmings—from French pastry to miniature cheese cakes. The entire club combined their efforts to bring forth grateful smiles from our faculty. As the Tea came to a closing, retiring teachers and advisor were presented with gifts from the club. Mrs. Giorgi, Mrs. Antonellis and Charlene beam with pride over tea’s success. Miss Cenedella is a staunch fan of James Bond and loves to be entertained by Frank Sinatra. Teachers Retire At the end of this year Milford High bade a sad farewell to two of its fine faculty members. Miss Marie Cenedella, teacher of English for many years, and Mr. Ben C. Lancisi, Director of Instrumental Music, rounded out their years of service as members of the High School faculty. Miss Cenedella taught English in A2 and Mr. Lancisi climaxed his career by con¬ structing the Glee Club. We wish both Miss Cenedella and Mr. Lancisi many happy retirement years. Mr. Ben Lancisi directs his Glee Club at Award Night. The class officers begin their last walk as leaders. SENIOR HOP The social event of the school year, the Senior Prom, was held on June 6, 1966 at the King Philip in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Music for the event was furnished by Ben C. Lancisi’s orchestra whose performance helped make this occasion most enjoyable. Other entertainment was furnished by the M.H.S. Glee Club, which sang Stout Hearted Men”. This occasion marked the last social function of the school year. Many thanks are extended to the very able committee who helped to make this a great success. These seniors are enjoying a hearty meal. The Glee Club sing to their hearts content. X Four’s a crowd. Cheers!!!
