CHEERLEADERS This enthusiastic group of girls have cheered our teams on to many an exciting victory. With their new, bright, attractive uniforms shown at the right, they have always added an ex¬ tra highlight at our games and rallies. These girls have had many long practice ses¬ sions, changing cheers and formations in order to make a more pleasing appearance. One need only to look into our trophy case to see the rewards of their efforts. From football field and basketball court to the floor of Spencer Town Hall for David Prouty High School Tournament, vim and vigor never cease to follow our girls. M.H.S. is proud of her vigorous bevy of girls. Strike up the Band! BAND Our school music-makers were in action again this year. The band under the direction of Mr. Ben C. Lancisi was back on the football field looking as good as ever. Claudia led the high stepping Majorettes and the small but powerful band up and down the football field to the accom¬ paniment of cheers from the devoted M.H.S. students. Of course, there were the daily practice sessions in the town park in the dust or mud, the cold or wind. These practices were enjoyed by everyone — the band mem¬ bers, the spectators at the windows of Milford High and non-working side¬ line contingents. Sometimes we were allowed to march on the , street and create traffic jams — will Musty ever learn how to turn the band around! ? Mr. DiBattista’s homeroom class will never forget the band. How could they? They had some of the greatest selections to study by. First came the marches, then the Christmas carols, songs from the play and finally Memorial Day hymns — all sending their cheerful sounds into A4. The band will be minus two musicians next year — Warren and Dennis are leaving. They still haven’t found a replacement for Dennis. Nobody wants to carry that monstrosity of a tuba on their shoulders. Claudia and June Ellen have faithfully led the band through dust and mud, triumph and defeat. 74 Our scintillating majorettes are: Front row: Andrea, Carol, Flossie, Claudia, June Ellen, Andrea, Elaine, Angela. CROSS COUNTRY The Milford High School Cross Country squad went down to defeat eight times without coming up for a single victory. Yet first year mentor Tom Cronin antici¬ pates great improvements next year. Only two runners will be lost via graduation and Coach Cronin will have many veterans returning such as Paul Borghi, a fleet-footed sophomore who is one of the ablest harrier’s” in Central Mass. Joining him will be another sophomore, Ray Bowen, and junior Charlie Canali, two excellent per¬ formers. Also coming back will be junior George Em- manual, and Sophomores Tom Derderian, Ray Zaccarino, and Jim Haughey. The graduating Seniors are Warren Heller and Ralph Furbush who are two of our top five speedsters. Both provided leadership and balance to our young squad. So cheer up track fans! The future looks bright for the Scarlets next season when Coach Cronin and co-cap¬ tains Charlie and Paul run again. Seniors Warren Heller and Ralph Fu rbush spearheaded Mr. Cronin’s at¬ tack this season. 76 Coach Ferrante is training this freshman squad for Mr. Cal. Many agreed with the doubters after seeing the scores of the Scarlets’ first three games, in which they failed to make a point. But Milford faced the two toughest opponents of the campaign, Southbridge and Marlboro, and lost its closest contest to Wauchusetts. By this point in the season the individual players had overcome their inexperience and had gained a mea¬ sure of self-confidence while the team as a whole devel¬ oped the pride that is so necessary for victory and jelled into a workable unit. With these new assets of pride and teamwork, the Scarlets went on to conquer previously undefeated Barlett High of Webster, 22-8. Milford con¬ tinued victorious in its five remaining contests to finish the season with an admirable record of six wins and three losses and a second place tie for the Midland League crown. A great deal of the credit for the Scarlets’ success goes to the best coaching staff in the area, consisting of our outstanding Head Coach John Calagione, Assistant Coaches Paul Scagnelli and Joseph Stocio and Freshman Coach Anthony Ferrante. Early in the Fall of 1964 the Oak Lily and Ivy Committee was formed under the super¬ vision of Mr. Sweeney. The Committee was given the gargantuan task of compiling our year¬ book. At the first meeting Claudia Mastroianni was chosen editor. Chosen as literary editor was Teresa Iannitelli; other officers chosen were Elaine Morrison and Francine Lancia, photo editors, Dennis Carrol, Business Manager, Kathryn Bilsbury and Patricia Blackmore, Art Edi¬ tors, Michael Nunes, Sports Editor and Kathleen Mainini, Treasurer. Then we were off!!! First we were faced with deciding upon the theme for our book, voting on whom to dedicate our book, a cover and our greatest problem — raising ample funds for the printing and publication of our book. In order to raise enough money we had a fall carwash, and a fall candy sales, in addition to canvassing the towns of Milford, Hopedale and Mendon for advertising. Our first assignment was the senior write-ups; from there we went onto sports, clubs, and the other activities the yearbook covers. Our photo editors arranged for senior pictures to be taken in November and later for Mr. Morin to come to the high school and take the various pictures necessary. By the beginning of March the book was nearly complete. The book was divided by seasons into sections — Fall and Winter; the third section covering events happening in the spring of our senior year will be covered in a supplement which will come out late in the summer. 82 Provincetown atmosphere is trans¬ planted to Milford during our Har¬ vest Dance. Blame them, our Dance Committee. These kids took the prize that night. CAREER CONFERENCES Mr. Lloyd Dillon of the Home National Bank explains the principles and opportunities of Banking to Pauline Mussulli, Dennis Terasconi, chairman David Graves, Jim Todd, Bob Skidmore, Doc Julian, and Dave Rossetti. To help interested students plan their futures the guidance office sponsored career conferences. People who work in the fields of banking, education, data processing, community colleges, physical education, social work, decorating, and ac¬ counting spoke about their work and answered students’ questions. Dear Diary, As the snow piled up so did our problems. Everyone’s thoughts concerned tv hat he would be doing next year. Winter is a dreary season, but our unfortunate basketball record made it even more so. Work continued on the O.L.I . V. This is the group of the misplaced freshmen. A high honor group, from left to right Diana Macan, Teresa Esteves, Richard Tumolo, Maryellen Bocaccino, and Paul Bibbo. This picture is significant of the hours of taking pictures, and the hours spent by the O.L.I. committee placing them. 87 THE FIGHTING SCARLETS BASKETBALL The never say die Scarlets fought hard all season long, but they just could not find the winning combination. Milford High finished with a 3-15 record in the power packed Central Massachusetts Con¬ ference. In every contest the Scarlets played a hustling hardfought battle which provided much excitement all season long. Inexperience was a major hindrance in coach Cronin’s plans for the Scarlets. Coach Cronin and Captain Dave Niro talk over plans. Bob Harris goes up for an easy two points. Coach Cronin in his second year of varsity coaching did a fine job in keeping the Scarlets together. He kept the team hustling, and he managed the young team very capably. Coach Cronin is an excel¬ lent mentor and we believe he will be in there fighting next season. Leading the Scarlets in scoring was Captain Dave Niro. Dave’s quick moves and sharp eye provided the Scarlets with the bulk of their scoring. Playing the other forward was big Nick Consoletti, who led the Scarlets in rebounds and who hustled in every ball game. Alternating at the center position were Charlie Canali and Lou Piazza; both did fine jobs throughout the season. Setting up the Scarlet offense and the ball handling chores were left to Bob Harris, Ben Tocci, and Mike Pavento. Dana Fontecchio, Warren Heller, and Fran Larson also saw quite a bit of action for the Scarlets. KEY CLUB The Milford High Key Club, which was inaugurated into the school program three years ago, is a service club to the school and community. It is sponsored by the Milfor d Kiwanis Club and is a member of Division 3 of the New England District of Key Clubs. Other schools in this Division are Hopkinton, Ashland, and the newly formed Framingham North High School Key Clubs. Milford High is also a member of Key Club International. The club’s major project this year was the formulating and awarding of the first annual Key Club Scholarship which was awarded to a member of the senior class. Funds for this scholar¬ ship were raised from a concert by the Holy Cross Glee Club and the Annhurst Glee Club in early March, sponsored by the local Kiwanians and Key Clubbers. During the past year the club also sold programs at the foot¬ ball games and M.H.S. emblems to the students. Many of the members attended the three day District Convention held in Bos¬ ton at the Statler-Hilton Hotel. The girls also keep busy with lectures from directors of nursing schools, registered and stu¬ dent nurses, along with various community proj¬ ects. The Membership to the club is opened to all students at the school who are thinking of going into this profession. Meetings are held every second Tuesday under the counsel of our advisor. The success of this club lies in its members. In the past and present this success is displayed by the amount of members to decide through the guidance of the club to become dignified teachers. These students, under the direction of Mr. Nello Alle- grezza, have shown through their participation of growing interest in scientific achievement and experimentation. Before any activities can actually begin, the new Junior mem¬ bers must be officially installed into the club. After initiations are completed, regular bimonthly meetings can proceed and social gatherings can take place. This year the big events were the March Dance and the regular June outing which closes each year. 94 n 1 iih Always ready to be of assistance, this is our Business Service Club. BUSINESS SERVICE CLUB Tire Business Service Club is a newly-formed organ¬ ization composed of students whose ambition lies in the business field. The purpose of this club is to enable its members to accept responsibility, and at the same time perfect their skills in office procedures. This has been achieved by aiding the faculty in the High School, creating a scholar¬ ship fund for outstanding business students, and by in¬ spiring its members with the incentive to better perform their various business tasks. Since the club has been so successful this year, it holds many promises for its fu¬ ture members. The students of the club would like to extend their thanks to Mr. Scagnelli and Miss Streich for the care¬ ful and patient guidance they have shown to our club members throughout the year. 95 Officers of the Business Service Club are from left to right: Kathleen Cunniff, vice-president; Elaine Grassi, secretary-treasurer; Helen An¬ derson, president. DANTE CLUB The Dante Club is one of Milford High’s most venerable organizations. Since it has been established, it has always had as its primary objective the promotion of Italian language and culture. The club is, therefore, unique in that no formal after¬ school meetings are necessary in order to attain its objective, since appreciation of the Italian way of life, next to actual resi¬ dence in Italy itself, is best enhanced in the environment of the Italian class-room. In this way, all students of Italian are able to derive benefit from its existence, and not only the compara¬ tive few who might attend evening meetings. Accordingly, sprinkled throughout formal daily sessions on the Italian language during the year were informal discus¬ sions and question-and-answer periods in the course of which little known aspects of the Italian culture were brought to light, examined and compared to our own culture. This direct student participation in the search for a better understanding of the Italian people invariably resulted in an animated ex¬ change of ideas, sometimes serious, sometimes otherwise, which in turn led to a deeper insight into the character and temperament of this richly endowed people. Who can ever forget our imaginary trips down a moonlit canal in Venice while the gondolier chanted his endless reper- tiore of songs? We fed the pigeons in the great square of Si Mark; stood in a humble Italian Church and gazed in awe a the magnificence of Leonardo’s Ultima Cena; shared witl Michelangelo his triumph of the Giudizio Universale in the Sistine Chapel; computed mathematically the day on which the Leaning Tower would come crashing to earth; cheered widly with the people of Siena during the running of the Palio; and tasted the sweetness of oranges picked from the laden trees of the Sicilian Conca d’ Oro. During our journey frequent asides on less ponderous aspects of the Italian way furnished many an amusing diversion. Italian superstitions, Italian food, Italian music, Italian idiom, each occupied a prominent place in our discussions, and each brought us closer to the realization of the objectives of our club. At this writing plans are being formulated for a visit to a famous Italian restaurant where we may enjoy first-hand the delights of which the Italians are justly proud. Whether these plans will materialize remains to be seen. In any case, our trip has been an unforgetable one, and we can only hope, like the departing tourists who wishfully throws his coin into the Fontana Treir, that we will one day return in fact to La Terra del Sole. 97 It seems to be a man’s world — as far as chess is concerned. CHESS CLUB mm ' JJii The recently revived Chess Club has be¬ come very active this year under the Supervision of Mr. Nello Allegrezza. The club which is the largest the school has had in the last four or five years meets every Friday in C 12. A number of books on chess have been purchased and made available to interested students. A tentative schedule of class matches has been set up with other schools. Meanwhile, members improve their efficiency by participat¬ ing in ladder tournaments. Mike and Louie play while Billy and Bobby kibitz. 98 iimi We have come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” PLAY-READING CLUB A new aspect of the English language was introduced this year with the establishment of the Milford High Play-Reading Club. The club was organized under the watchful eye of Mrs. Earlene Cornell. The main objective of the group was to in¬ spire appreciation among the students for the great masters of literature Shakespeare to Hemingway. The guidance of Mrs. Cornell and the enthusiasm showed by the members helped to make the first year of the Play-Read¬ ing Club a most enjoyable one. 99 The officers are Margaret Burford, President; Evemarie Visconti, Vice-President; Nancy Klein, Treasurer; and absent was Dorothy Cozzens, Secretary. ■ Everyone is trying hard to look intelligent! NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is concluding its third year at Milford High School. The group consisting of twenty-eight students is directed by Mr. Charles J. Bru- cato. The purpose of the Society is to stimulate the growth of its characteristics of service, leadership, char¬ acter, and citizenship. Twenty-eight members were enducted last May and soon afterwards officers were elected. They are Louis Piazza, President; Kathleen Mainini, Vice-President; Teresa Iannitelli, Secretary; and John Migliacci, Treasurer. Elected to the Executive Committee were Susan Colanti, Carol O’Connor, Michael Nunes and Kathryn Bilsbury. For the second year the Honor Society members were given blazers. Louis presides over his interested group. 100 The Blue Blazer Kids.” “The Scarlet ” Under the direction of the National Honor Society and the sponsorship of Mr. Brucato, the Scarlet was organized for 1964-1965. Edit or-in-chi ef News Editor Sports Editor Business Manager Teresa Iannitelli Elizabeth Larson Louis Piazza Michael Nunes Contributions to the Scarlet from all classes increased. The Paper has really become representative of all classes this past year. We pride ourselves on keeping everyone in¬ formed about school activities and on all the games, of course. They always get their stories. 101 ORATORICAL CONTEST Barbara DiVitto, Judy Collins, Mr. Brucato, Teresa Iannitelli, Warren Heller, Kathryn Bils- bury — our orators. The American Legion Oratorical contestants delivered their speeches in the John C. Lynch Auditorium before members of all classes. Coached by Mr. Charles Brucato, Assistant Principal, and Miss Philomena Colavita, head of the English Department, the speakers touched upon some phase of the Constitution. The patriotic spirit was much in evidence and all essays were considered excellent. Contestants were judged on the basis and content of their essay, poise, and their manner of delivery. Each of the five contestants, Warren Heller, Kathryn Bilsbury, Theresa Iannitelli, Barbara DiVitto, and Judith Collins, excelled in presenting his oration to the audience. Judith Collins was chosen as the school’s representative in further competition. Judy was the first student from Milford High to ever place second in the Inter-School Contests and to go on and win first alternate in the zone contests. The contestants displayed a understanding knowledge of the Ameri¬ can Government and also derived a valuable lesson in public speaking. 102 Judy with her trophy. GOOD GOVERNMENT DAY This year Warren Heller was chosen by the members of the senior class to represent our school at the State House in Boston. The names of the representatives from the various towns in Massachusetts were placed in a fishbowl and names were drawn for the various of¬ ficers of the state; Warren was chosen as Bank Commissioner. Good Government Day was held on April 2 when Warren will enjoy a full day serving as a state official. BOYS STATE PAUL PISCIA and MICHAEL NUNES were elected by their classmates to represent Milford High School at the annual Boys’ State Convention held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Boys’ State is sponsored by the American Legion to educate promis¬ ing students in the rights, duties, and responsibilities of American citizens. While at Boys’ State Mike and Paul learned of the problems which face local, state, and federal govern¬ ments. They also acquired a clearer understanding of the mechanics of town government, the duties of pub¬ lic officers, their powers, their functions, their limita¬ tions. The main purpose of Boys’ State is to arouse teen-age interest in government and to teach them how to run a government. 103 Maureen Tosches: Expert in avalanche control. Who says our seniors aren’t photogenic??? This group seems to have mastered the art of taking a good picture; the trick is nonchalance before the camera!!! Congratulations and best wishes to the class of 1965. I am very happy to wish every one of you the very best life has to offer. You are going to meet a challenging world and the person who is equipped to meet the challenge will be the one who receives the greatest reward. In many fields of endeavor the reward will be commensurate with the amount of effort expended. Graduation from high school will, I hope, mean the continuance of your studies at various schools of higher learning or at the job of your choice. Wherever you go or whatever you do, remember that the world can be made a better place for your having lived in it, if you really make an effort to be a good citizen, loyal to your God, your country and yourself.
