Alfred Cenedella Photography Editor Joyce Grillo Sports Editor .... Kim Miller Cover Design . . . Janice Imbruno FOREWORD Our graduation marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the first graduating class from Milford High School. Throughout our book we have tried to link the past with the present. While comparing our activities and ambitions with those of Milford High students one hun¬ dred years ago, we found that, like 1962, 1862 was the best of times and the worst. Because we are proud to be this special class we have tried to make this edition of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy a special one. Our most important feature, of course, is the comparison we have made between the year 1862 and the present time. In addition to pictures from the past and familiar local scenes, we are particularly happy with our pet project—color. It is the sincere wish of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy committee that the product of our efforts will be a rewarding climax to the high school career of each member of the class of sixty-two. Brucato As our four happy and profitable years at Milford High School draw to an end, it is most fitting that we try to express our deep appreciation for his patient instruction, his contagious enthusiasm as a coach in days gone by, and his sincere friendship. This dedication can only be thought of as a small token in return for his many efforts in our behalf. It is with pride and affection that we, the class of 1962 and the one-hundredth graduating class of Milford High School dedicate this edition of the Oak, Lily, and Ivy to Charles J. Brucato. 4 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY It is important to understand that we are living in a period of crises. Our republic, con¬ ceived by men of great vision, who enunciated their wisdom by means of a declaration which claimed that certain truths were self-evident, that all men were endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. They formalized this philosophy in a contract agreed to by themselves. This Constitution gave us a republic and with it went great individual responsibility. It gave man, for the first time, complete freedom and great prosperity. I have faith in the youth, the future citizens of this great republic. Learn the truth. Ideas accom¬ panied with action are powerful tools. Our very survival as a free nation depends upon vou. The choice and responsibility are yours. May God guide you. Thomas P. DePalo, M.D. To The Graduates Of 1962 As you approach commencement, undoubtedly you will reflect and take inventory of your achievement in the past as well as your prospects for the future. We pray tha t full advantage of the schools offering has been taken by each of you. We trust that you have built strong foundations in the development of your mind, your body and your character. We hope that you are adequately equipped to meet the awesome challenges which lie ahead of young people embarking upon adult life in the nuclear age. Your class has the distinction of being the centennial class to graduate from Milford High School. I am confident that you shall measure up to the expectations of your parents and teachers. It is my most sincere wish that you will not only equal but surpass the accomplishment and achievement of previous graduates as you leave this school and come to grips with the problems which lie ahead of you. With God’s blessing, may each of you achieve the ultimate in happiness and success. David I. Davoren Our school committee meeting in executive session! Mr. Michael J. DeCesare; Attorney Pacifico DeCapua; Mr. Robert McGinnis; Dr. Thomas DePalo; Mr. Ernest Lombardi; Attorney Alfred B. Cenedella, Jr.; Supt. of Schools David I. Davoren. We the class of 1962 wish to express our deepest gratitude to the School Committee. We sincerely ap¬ preciate the time and effort they have devoted in advancing the Milford school system. This year, for the first time since World War II, a member of this committee, Pacifico DeCapua, is serving in the armed forces overseas. The other five members are carrying on in his absence. Presently the major problem of the school commit¬ tee is finding space for additional pupils. Two of our classrooms are now being used by elementary students. The School Committee of 1862 probably faced problems similar to those of the committee of 1962. We are sure that the first graduating class was as grateful to their committee as we are to ours. SCHOOL COMMITTEE Vice Chairman Robert McGinnis and Chairman Thomas DePalo discuss policies pertaining to school business. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Your increasing knowledge of the arts, sciences, and humanities brings all of us greater hope tor peace, happiness, world tolerance, and dignity among all nations. The school spirit you have shown as Milford High’s 100th graduating class has set patterns and traditions for many wonderful years to come. I am humble and proud to have been one of many who helped to project and carry out plans for your educa¬ tion which today bear such splendid dividends and which will grow to maturity. For all of you I feel a special warmth and affection as you leave your teachers and this school proudly to commence a new chapter in your life. I hope success will accompany you in all your endeavors. Joseph J. Toscbes Joseph J. Tosches Principal 9 The English department and Language departments pose for a joint picture. We wish to express our deepest appreciation to Miss Burns for her many years of service. She has been more than just a teacher to us, she has been a friend. Her sincerity and understanding have helped us through many a difficult situation. We shall always be enlightened by the example she has set for us. 17 1 SENIORS It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It -was the season of darkness. It was the spring of hope, we had everything before us, we had noth¬ ing before us—” In short, the period was like the present period. The Class of 1862, the first class to graduate from Milford High School, faced a future torn asunder by Civil War. We, the Class of 1962, like to think that we can face difficulties and dangers at least as well as they did. A future overshadowed by possible Nu¬ clear Warfare, but burgeoning with promises of unbelievable opportunity makes Dickens’ words more prophetic than ever. We don’t know what the future will bring, but we promise that we will be doing our share. The programme committee consisting of Joan Creasia, Frank Paradiso, Jean Creasia, Kim Miller, Eugenia Giammarco, Ann Giacomuzzi, Helen Ferguson and Janice Imbruno, takes time out for a picture. This group also made a great success of the Thanksgiving Drive. The activities of the graduating class of a hundred years ago were of course typical of the time. In an agricultural community, with classes kept small by draft calls and volunteers in the Civil War, the Extracurricular Activities con¬ sisted of Debating and Dramatics. These were closely linked to classroom work. The Senior of 1962 can look back on the Flurry of Activity with Clubs galore and Sports and Dances to fill the calendar. We certainly do not long for The Good Old Days! 71 Janice, Joyce, Nancy and Mary Ann relax against a background of Frank, Donna, Judy, Janice, John and a set of library bookshelves. OAK, LILY, AND The theme of this year’s book was based on the fact that 1962 marks the hundredth anniversary of a graduating class at Milford High. We have tried to hint at least the relation¬ ship which exists between the classes and the debt that we owe to their pioneering spirit. The problems that we had to face as publishers of this book were probably similar to those of previous years. To us they seemed insurmountable. We had decided to add a little color to our book, but to do this meant additional expense. Pages 94 and 95 attest to our decision. The time expended by the members of the committee sometimes seemed eternal. Mr. Sweeney found it practical to have a dozen or so mem¬ bers work at his home in order to get the work done. Every¬ one worked willingly on these several Monday nights, but Janice, Betsy and Ann look over the yearbook dummy. all insisted that they leave in time to see Ben Casey.” Our committee could stand just so much hard work, and then it had to relax. When we were appointed to the yearbook committee we were told that this committee was the most important one in the school. We found out the reason mighty soon. The responsibility of putting out a book was one that we re¬ spected. The meetings we held were for a definite purpose. Our fund raising activities brought us into contact with the businessmen of town and we came to appreciate their generosity, and also some of their problems. Without the help of the local merchants this book would have been im¬ possible. Their support and the support of the entire class made our job much easier. Joyce Larson and Ann Cunniff cannot quite de¬ cide why Fred Cenedella is so serious. It’s only money and those advertisers were generous. V 1 cr Jule, Jean, Patricia and Janet lineup in front of Joseph, Sharon, Patty, Kim, Mary Louise, Ann and Gerald. This O.L.I. group was most diligent in collecting money for ads and in typing the copy for the printer. IVY COMMITTEE The dedication of the 1962 yearbook was decided upon at an early meeting. Mr. Sweeney informed us that the custom was to dedicate the book to some teacher whom we respected and to whom the book had not been recently dedicated. The decision was made by our committee and we selected Mr. Charles Brucato. It was strictly coincidence that the dedicatee turned out to be the sponsor of the Na¬ tional Honor Society at an assembly later in the year. This National Honor Society was formed here at Milford High for the first time this year. In choosing our cover design we had a lengthy discussion; finally Janice Imbruno created a cover which satisfied the group and it was selected. Janice was a very active member These gals smile positively as they look over negatives for our color pages. Janice, Donna and Louise, typically lovely seniors. of the committee and made several worthwhile contributions to our book. The various methods of raising money were fairly success¬ ful. The Carl DeSuze lecture was a financial success., al¬ though a few days before its presentation Mr. Sweeney was looking for a way out of his committment. Miss Margaret Pyne, as has been her custom for some years, kept a watchful eye on our treasury and is due our sincere thanks for her efforts. Mr. Sweeney, toward the end of the year, chose Miss Joyce Larson as the member of the committee who did the most for the success of the book. We think that it was a wise choice. The Future Teachers Club of Milford High School was organized in 1952, with its main purpose to enlighten students on the advantages of the profession. The club’s faculty advisor, Miss Pacella, has kept the pupils interested by bringing guests to talk with the members, by visiting campuses of State Colleges, and by listening on the topics of Careers of Teaching.” The club has, through the years, conducted many ac¬ tivities of interest to our future teachers, among which was a visit by Dr. C. Flint Taylor, Director of Admis¬ sions at Worcester State College. Later in the year the members of the club visited the college and were im¬ pressed with the facilities available. The boys and girls will, in the latter part of the year visit the annual Spring Convention. These pupils also carried on a fund raising project to help meet any of the clubs expenses, and also to purchase pens for the members. We have confidence in the members of our club and are sure they will be a credit to the school as Future Teachers. 80 Members of the Future Nurses Club are all smiles in this picture. Meetings are held regularly with Olga Amantea, President, presiding. Doctor DeSalvia gives advice and interesting information to the members. To sup¬ port the clubs’ needs, various ways of earning money are discussed. During the year, the girls visited several hospitals and heard interesting talks by nurses from various schools. Aris Kalpakgian, Eugenia Giammarco, James Kearnan, Standing are Louise Mazzarelli, Alda Milani, Fred Cene- Domenic Compagnone, and Joyce Larson. ORATORICAL CONTEST Janet, Joan, Robert and Nancy used the facilities of the library for much of their material research. Coached by Miss Sadie O’Connell, English Department Head, and inspired by the subject matter which they had to cover, this year’s oratorical contestants reached new heights in eloquence. After a very strict elimination, four seniors were chosen to compete. Actually the competition was a little unusual this year in that the student body was gathered into the auditorium for the contest on one snowy morning only to be sent back to their rooms. One of the contestants was unable to crawl out of a sick bed to compete. Finally the contest was run off. The subjects selected by the contestants were all concerned with the American Constitution. The patriotic spirit was very much in evidence and all essays were considered excellent. The judges chose Joan Blackmore the winner of the contest, and they congratulated Nancy McGinnis, Janet Feccia, and Robert Bruce. The winner and new champion smiles for the cameraman. Joan went on to further competition in the American Legion contest. 83 Bn - “■ i hm ■ b Wjn A i £jr jr A crowd shot of one of our assemblies. STUDENT COUNCIL The Council Officers were busy all year. Judy had some time between pictures for Council activities. An active part of the Milford High School student association is the Student Council. During the extra period of each Tuesday, all home room representa¬ tives, 2 members at large from each class, the 4 class presidents and the officers of the student council gather together in their new room C-7, to form the governing body of Milford High School. Our very active Robert Bruce has proved to be a very capable president of Student Council. Many fund raising drives and extra curricular activities have been successfully put on by this Council. All members receive a pin for their attendance each year. Special awards are given to those persons for their faithful service. Under the capable supervision of Miss Catherine Curtin, this Council has proved a great success throughout this year. 84 Mi Ai? Name it—You can have it. •it- 1 L- - JUNIOR “I’ll never forget that wonderful night of our Junior Prom,” is a sentence that has been heard a hundred times and again. It will always be a beautiful memory for everyone, from the very beginning with the preparations, to the very end with the stroke of midnight. Let us begin with the decorations. Actually the committee had very little to do with the decorations since the Prom was held at the gorgeous King Phillip Ballroom in Wrentham, Mass. As usual our capable Ben C. Lancisi supplied the music, so that was no problem. The girls having spent hours at the hairdresser and making last minute preparations on their gowns; and the boys having washed their car and taken care of flower arrangements, were ready to launch the formal evening. Upon entering we were thrilled at the beauty and vastness of the ballroom. The polished floors, glass walls, and shim¬ mering chandeliers made this lovely moment seem like a pic¬ ture out of a story book. As the orchestra began playing our theme, I’ll Be Seeing You,” the couples waltzed across the dance floor, everyone seemingly to be in a wonderful dream. The Grand March, which was led by our class officers, displayed the soft, floating gowns and sweet scented flowers of the girls; while the boys were attired in rented tuxedoes and flashy cummerbunds. When the hands of the clock struck twelve a lovely dream was coming to its end. We proceeded into the dining room where we were served a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings. 86 Helen Ferguson and Mai Warren at the Junior Prom. Diane Paul Vincent Pasacane Jean Creasia Frank Paradiso BAND With the sounding of the first whistle, our band leaders Sharyn Pilla and Mary Ann D., proudly lead the band through the park for practice, down the streets for a parade and across the field during half-time. Our strutting and smiling majorettes twirled their batons to the swing¬ ing music of the band as many spectators watch. The band leaders, Mary Ann and Sharyn alternate leading the band in their gold and white uniforms. Fol¬ lowing behind them in white and red is our majorette captain Janet Cahill, patiently trying to teach the other majorettes a field and street routine, and with the help of Janice Imbruno, another senior. One can usually find the band practicing up the Town Park or stopping the traffic up Congress Street. This cold day didn’t stop our capable and faithful senior band members from smiling for this picture. Leaving will be John N., Joseph D., Janice I., Joyce L., Mary Ann D., Sharyn P., Janet C., Bruce C., Gene D., Mickey J., and Raymond P. Mr. DiGiannantonio leads the group through The Sound of Music.” GLEE America the Beautiful,” can be heard throughout the halls of M.H.S. when our Glee Club gets together for practice. Under the capable direction of Mr. Alex Di¬ Giannantonio, our Glee Club sang in the various events throughout the year, and were well praised for their efforts. I’m sure we’ll always remember the good times we had during practice and the hard time we had staying on key. CLUB Our first performance of the year was at the organiza¬ tion of the National Honor Society. The Honor Society induction ceremony for underclass¬ men in May was an occasion for another public ap¬ pearance. It has been said that the neighbors on School Street turn off TV to listen to our voices. We wonder . . . Singing along with Mitch had nothing on our Glee Club, except perhaps a few male voices. But never underestimate the power of a woman. MU.F0RO HiLFOffD UlLFOffo Captain Janice Ferraro displays their first place tropy which they won in a tournament. The cheerleaders include: Geri Costanza, Marilyn Consigli, Donna Powers, Judi De¬ Santis, Roberta Diotalevi, Phyllis Pillarella, and Carol Marcus. Cheer for the Cheerleaders As proven in the Uxbridge cheerleading tournament, Mil¬ ford High’s Cheerleaders are the best. The fans didn’t need to see their first place trophy to appreciate their cheering ability. All one had to do was to attend either a basketball or a football game to see the worth of these girls. Cheerleaders motto-. To root and cheer has been our cry It’s always been our history, And when the team is down and out, We cheer them on to victory. 90 Our peppy senior cheerlearers include: Donna Powers, Captain Janice Ferraro, and Judi DeSantis. You can’t tell our cheerleaders from the stiff competition from Walpole. Janice, Where should I go?” Our cheerleaders take time out to pose at one of our rallies. 91 Dr. John DeSalvia enjoys the exchange of ideas during the Student Exchange Pro¬ gram. Student Council Officers are conscious of their responsi¬ bilities in conducting their programs. 92 Student Council seniors in library. Band members in an unusual pose in the corridor instead of the bandroom. The Ring Committee belatedly looks over its purchase. Janice was exhausted from cheerleading, studying and just plain spring fever. The group is a fine one. They know why they have their picture taken; we don’t. 93 • - • I L I f.1 il r f ■ill : m : W ' V M 1 JT M V 1 1 a 1 r i • r i m ft, SPORTS The 1961 Football Squad with Head Coach John Calagione in front row to the right. Coach Joseph Stoico is one the left in the front row. They are backed up by Coach Ben Consoletti and Coach Fred Duval. VARSITY FOOTBALL Kim Miller and John Testa get a few pointers from Head Coach Calagione. The Milford High School football team, under the mentorship of head coach John Calagione and assistants Joe Stoico, Benjamin Consoletti, and newly appointed Fred Duval, wound up the 1961 season with a well fought battle against highly touted Walpole High at Fino Field Thanksgiving Day. A large turnout of 62 candidates reported to Coach Calagione August 28 for two weeks of double sessions. Milford’s first game, the jamboree with Ashland at Northbridge, resulted in a 12-0 defeat for the Scarlets. The Scarlets then lost en¬ counters to Southbridge, Clinton, and Marlboro. Milford’s first and only win came at the expense of Bartlett High of Webster, 14-0. Rain and drenched field prevailed through the entire game which saw the fiery Scarlets excel on offense and especially on defense. After a week’s rest the Scarlets, sporting from their recent victory, met North Attleboro at Fino Field but could not manage a win, losing 18-6. A series of defeats followed from Hudson, May¬ nard, and Walpole. Although finishing with a disappointing 1-7 season, there were many bright spots throughout the year. It can be truthfully said that the Scarlets gave the fans a brand of football that has not been seen in a long time. They never gave up until the whistle had sounded and always did their best, exhibiting fair play and sportsmanship at all times. Senior members of the Football Squad were pleased to hear Coach Calagione call their team the team in which he has taken the Greatest Pride.” Seniors playing their last year of high school football were: guard Gerry Demery, tackle John DeSousa, tackle Joe Renda, halfback Fran Cecchi, fullback Chuck Calagione, cent er Fred Cenedella, end Joe Cimino, halfback Pat Tessicini, end Dave DeVita and co-captains end John Testa and quarter¬ back Kim Miller. The 1962 graduating seniors wish the very best of luck to next year’s team for we know with their potentialities they could have a truly great season. We would also like to sincerely thank Coach Calagione, Coach Stoico, Coach Consoletti, and Coach Duval for three wonderful years of football. None of us will ever forget the valuable lessons learned not only about football, but how to exemplify sportsmanship and good behavior in our everyday lives. BASKETBALL i Ernie tries another jump shot against St. Mary’s. The Scarlets under the new mentorship of Coach Duval experienced a season which was something less than a success. To overcome a distinct lack of height in comparison to other teams in the league Coach Duval instituted a man-to¬ man defense. This was successful in defeating Marlboro, Hudson, and Maynard. But did not stop the other teams in the circuit. Scoring honors this year went again to versatile Ernie Kapatoes and Eddie (The Gunner) Robertson whose long jump shots often put Milford High back in the game. In the annual Milford-St. Mary’s town series the Scarlets were set down to two defeats, 62-49 and 74-65. As usual the series saw very hotly contested ball playing with both teams being worked up and very definitely out to win. Sincere thanks are extended to head coach Fred Duval and to Coach Stoico, who willingly helped out during Mr. Duval’s absence. 98 A r An occasional elbow never hurt anyone. Conference. Before the season started Coach Cahill expressed doubt as to whether his harriers would have a suc¬ cessful season in such a strong conference. All fears seemed to be dispelled when the Red and White squad easily romped over Marlboro and Auburn. Then Milford was trounced by Wachusett Regional, Shrewsbury and Northbridge. Throughout the season Coach Cahill’s harriers led by seniors Dom Compagnone and Eddie Robert¬ son. Also doing a fine job were juniors Tom Traut- wein and Danny Cloutier, and sophomore Jerry Lind- felt. Although Milford will be losing seven seniors next year, there is still the potential from which Mr. Cahill can build a fine team. Dominic Compagnone seems to be ready for action. Everything is A-O.K.,” says Mr. Cahill, Go! Go! Go! Dom.’’ 100 .J 4 Freshman boys seem to be set and ready to go. But ready to go where?” That is the question. FRESHMAN The Milford Freshman Team under the instruc¬ tion of Mr. Joseph Stoico, who also served as varsity line coach, had an outstanding season. The team showed desire to win and we know they will prove themselves in future years. The seasonal record was 4 wins and 1 loss.
