These best years of our lives will be the source of many pleasant moments long after our graduation. As a stimulus to our remembering, We have ar- ranged our book with a few pages from a photo album, a dance program, and pictures of many of our activities. We take particular pride in the fact that this book is a product of our own efforts. We have arranged pictures and format ourselves. We are amateurs, but we hope our 1952 edition of the OAK, LILY and IVY will be a pleasant memory in itself. Assisting Dr. Capece in his Various duties is Attorney A. B. Cenedella, Jr., vice-chairman. A new addition to the committee is Attorney Anthony Compagnone. The indefatigable members of this committee have con- tinued to satisfy the demands of teachers, parents, pupils, and towns- people, and certainly deserve the high opinion We students hold. The committee merits much praise and esteem. We the class of 1952 take this opportunity to offer our congratulations for a difficult job competently handled. We are sure that in years to come We shall point with pride to our School Committee. MR. JOSEPH J. TOSCHES Mr. Joseph J. Tosches has been our principal during our high school years. His many favors and his good will toward his students will long be cherished in our memories. His patience must have been sorely tried at times by our awkward attempts at the achievement of our goal, but we hope he will remember us for our efforts rather than our accomplish- ments. MR. DAVID I. DAVOREN Gur Superintendent of Schools, Mr. David l. Davoren, has been a great friend to all of us during our high school years. His was the guiding spirit behind our new cafeteria and our Physical Education Program. The Class of 1952 thanks Mr. Davoren for his many efforts in our behalf. All third year French students are eligible for membership. Officers of the club are: President Monsieur Aaron Levy, Vice-President Monsieur Harold Vilensky, Secretary Mademoiselle Virginia Richards, and Treasurer Mademoiselle Evelyn Wellman. Meetings of the club are held once a month during the regular French period. These meetings usually open with the recitation of L'Oraison Dominicale and include the singing of La Marseillaise. Each member presents a selec- tion in French at this time. Membership in the French Club has been an enjoyable and beneficial experience for all of us because of the inspirational leadership of Mademoiselle Pianca. rg w 3 Z fy A lf 'Was Gamma glad The Camera Club of Milford High School has a restricted membership of ten pupils. This restriction is due to the limited space for a darkroom and is based on the in- terest of its members. The club is comprised of members of all four classes, but the officers are seniors, as is stated in the club's constitution. The ofiicers are: President John Bruce and Secretary-Treasurer Robert Quotrocchio. The main function of the Camera Club is to instruct and instill a better knowledge and appreciation for all phases and branches of photography. lt teaches the students by means of actual experience, how to develop and finish their own prints. The club is most fortunate in having a darkroom completely equipped with one of the member's equipment among which is an enlarger. This club has as its adviser, Mr. J. Gerard Sweeney, Director of Audio-visual teaching at M. H. S., who is himself a photography enthusiast. If all goes well this may someday be a leading club in Milford High School. .Slmlewi Emma! This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Milford High School Student Associa- tion and we are proud to say that We have an enrollment of 100 percent. The associa- tion is governed by the Student Council which consists of all the class officers, eight members-at-large, and a representative from each home-room. The council has four officers who are elected by the entire student body each year. The association sends baskets to ill members, and spiritual bouquets if there is a death in the immediate family or if a member dies. The association also conducted many successful drives. Many enjoyable social events were held this year and four ex- cellent programs Were presented in the auditorium. Uaafaaical Qanleu' During the beginning of February, the MHS student body assembled in the auditorium to Witness the annual Oratorical Contest. Seniors participating in this affair were: Mary D'Amelio, Phyllis Lombardi, Virginia Richards, Peter Bedrosian, Aaron Levy, and Ernest Mastroianni. Under the coaching of lVIr. Lawrence Catusi, the partici- pants developed their speeches into forceful orations, which were delivered very skillfully. Peter Bedrosian was judged the Winner by the faculty. Mr. Tosches congratulated Peter Bedrosian for his excellent essay and his fine delivery. fbafafe Glad The Dante Club was organized under the supervision of Mr. Gabriel Di Battista, head of Social Studies Department of the High School. The club as in previous years fos- tered the study of the Italian language and appreciation of the beauty of its literature. With Louis Valente as its president the Dante Club was enthusiastic in its support of cultural advances made through the study of Italian. Plans for several ac- tivities Were on the fire as the book goes to press. The senior class is unanimous in its acclaim of the achievements and potentialities of the Dante Club and each of us urges support of this organization by future classes. The officers are: Louis Valente, President Ernest Vesperi, Treasurer Ann Tumolo, Vice President Joanne Beccia, Secretary up I, mmm Glad We found that there were several benefits to be gained from the German Classes be- sides the literary. Miss Pianca has the reputation of being one of the best cake makers in the neighborhood. It was rather difficult to murmur Ein, ZWei through a mouth- ful of delicious food, and of course our excellent table manners would have fore-stalled any such event. We were twice blessed by the calmness and Warmth of our teacher's per- sonality and shall cherish in our memories the pictures we can recall of those pleasant occasions. Under the masterful guidance of Miss Pianca, the German Club has completed an- other successful year. The achievements and success of the club are a tribute to Miss Pianca's untiring efforts. In the above picture are shown the club members: President, Virginia Ferrarog Vice-President, Merle Hatteng Secretary, Patricia Valakisg Treasurer, Harold Vilensky. Also shown above as guests are the first-year German students. Although our club was limited to four members, We enjoyed every minute of it. The memory of Miss Pianca and the benefits of all her teachings will live with us through- out our future years. eamacw ew eThe Commercial Club was organized again this year under the direction of Miss Eva Burns. Our oiiicers were: President, Bernard Villanig Vice-President, Evelyn Well- man, Secretary, Jean LaPresteg Treasurer, Anthony Gogliormella. The chief activity of the club was the publishing of the Commercial Paper. The aim of our staff was to publish all news concerning Milford High School. The Buzz col- umn and short stories were enjoyed by all students and they waited enthusiastically for the paper. The Commercial Club is grateful to Miss Burns for her advice and for her support of the club. Every year she has advised the club in its activities, giving her own time and effort for their success. We, the members of the Commercial Club, will not forget her kindness and interest. is 'WW A, st, fcdfzaluand. The school library was placed this year under the supervision of Miss Colavita. She selected Ann Andreano as Head Student Librarian, with Mildred Anderson, Alan Kratzsch, Alice Coelho, and Joyce Aghajanian as assistant librarians. Each pupil devoted at least one period per day to various library duties. Innovations have included a cataloguing of the books and magazines so that students may more easily locate any material or information that is available. An improvement in the attractiveness of the room was made by arranging numerous interesting dis- plays on the bulletin boards, many of which were prepared by Miss Whipple's art classes. Also a corner of the library containing occupational material supplied by Mr. Moran, Guidance Director, has been set aside for the use of the Social studies and guidance classes. Miss Colavita has been successful in arranging the various details of the library, but would be much happier if some new books were purchased to adorn the library shelves. mg- by Bam! The Milford High School Band achieved a degree of perfection which we now almost take for granted. Under the tutelage of Mr. Lancisi, the band has developed into a unit which has become an integral part in our school life and activities. As usual the band was present at every occasion of importance, and we all thrilled to its stirring marches. Football games became more colorful, and the shows between the halves were always successful. But the football season was only the beginning. The band practiced dur- ing the long winter months preparing for the annual spring concert. In the days just preceding the concert, Mr. Lancisi started using a tape recorder to show the band mem- bers just where improvement was needed. The score of the concert was a varied one. It ranged from the classical tunes to the fast moving Tiger Rag. Annually the band marches in the Memorial Day parade and annually the comments are favorable. We have come to expect the best from our band, and we have never been disappointed. iv' Mifune! Shaw The curtains were open, and Ronnie Cahill was sweeping the floor for the opening of the Fifteenth Annual Minstrel Show on the night of December 12, 1951. Victor Filosa practiced a tight-rope walk, while Nick Julian practiced his song before the show. The endmen walked on the stage and carried on a vivid conversation while the chorus took its place. Tony Gogliormella's orchestra started with the strains of Darktown Strutter's Ball and the show was underway with the greetings of our own Master of Ceremonies, Pete Fisher. Among those of the class of ,52 were Johanne Cutropia and Marie Ricci who sang. Ernest Mastroianni presented a skit with Bernie Klem. Surprisingly enough Mar- guerite Shuber and Phyllis Lombardi were endmen. Other endmen were Leo Bucchino, Aaron Levy, Johnny Mignone, and Tony Gogliormella. These endmen managed to get their jokes in between presentations and, with the exception of Leo and Aaron, each gave a vocal solo. The closing song was written and sung by Frances Nelson and Evelyn Wellman with a well-trained chorus in the background. Thus ended another successful minstrel show. We wish to express our thanks and deep gratitude to Ben Lancisi for his help and co- operation to make this show a successful one. 8 uniaa fjaam The Junior Prom of the Class of 1953 Was held on Saturday evening, April 19, 1952 at eight o'clock in the John C. The program was beautifully conceived and directed by Mr. Alex Di Giannantonio. Peter Bedrosian was the narrator. The stage setting Was the Manger scene surrounded by the Wise Men and Shepherds. The Blessed Mother was beautifully portrayed by Eleanor Bibbo, Who is also a member of the Cflee Club. The Glee Club sang nine Christmas songs, With Geraldine Daltorio, Marie Ricci and Johanna Cutropia presenting solos. During the Christmas Holidays the Glee Club sang with the Stacy School Chorus at the Christmas Carol Community singing. The Glee Club has always worked hard to make each event they Were in a success. We are proud of the efforts and We congrat- ulate Mr. Di Giannantonio for a job well done. Science Glad The Milford High School Junior Science Club was reorganized this year under the direction of Mr. Fred A. Metcalf. The purpose of the club is to further and stimulate the students' interest in science. Each member of the club presented experiments at the bi-monthly meetings. An informal Christmas party was held for the students and their parents. Favors were given and refreshments were served to all. Novelty dances were held, and a good time was had by all, as is customary at all club functions. An exhibition was held in May, and was opened to the students of the school. Mem- bers were required to take part in all activities. Each meeting was eagerly antici- pated by the members. The officers of the club were: Peter Bedrosian, Presidentg Warren Larson, Vice-Presi- dentg John Tessicini, Secretaryg and Daniel Glennon, Treasurer. The reason the Science Club is considered one of the most successful activities of the school is our loyal adviser, who has helped us unseliishly. Mr. Metcalf has donated his time and Whole-hearted support for the success of the club. f f ,D A 0 X iw 1 ff, 1 ,,,Ir.,.,,,, 3 I IM. .M if mf, U M., Spnfufd N234 goalie!! Although Milford High's football team did not make an impressive record in the won and lost column, it proved that it was a team that had spirit and the will to win. Under the tutelage of Coaches Charles Brucato, John Calagione, and Charles Espanet, the team developed from an inexperienced, struggling group to a great fighting machine. Under Capt. Eddie Castiglione the team scored impressive victories over Shrewsbury, Maynard, Franklin, and St. Mary's. With a little good fortune the team might have scored startling upsets over heavily favored Clinton, Hudson, Stoughton and Marlboro high schools. At a banquet sponsored by the Sons of Italy, Nick De Ruvo, who was converted from a tackle to a center, was awarded the trophy given annually to the most valu- able player on the football team. Milford had a fast squad, a big factor in any game, but lacked height, which is a bigger factor. The boys, under Coach Cahill, practiced long and hard and played every game to the best of their abil- ity, but could not withstand the height of their opponents. Milford had shown that their hard work paid off not in victories but in points made per game. Milford High's average was 54.7 points per game. This was made possible by all the boys, but especially Cap- tain John Mignone, Don Carroll, and sophomore Bob Stoico. Milford High next year Will have young veterans back, boys that are tall and full of spirit. Efuedall The baseball season is always the last item to be recorded in a yearbook. The dead- line for the printers usually comes before much action takes place. We have been for- tunate in being able to record several games at the beginning of the season. The outstanding feature to date has been the one hit game pitched by Ralph Lumenti against Franklin. The story book game was ruined by, of all people, a pinch hitter with two out in the ninth inning. The next man struck out. The young sopho- more truly shows signs of real ability and the team itself has won 10 of its first dozen games Coach Charles Brucato seems to have come up with another of his really good teams. The team was coached by His Versatility, J. Francis Cahill. The team competed in several meets and did remarkably well for its first year in competition. The road course in Milford was tough, with Fountain Street hill being one of the rougher obstacles. The benefits gained from this sport are very real. The competitive spirit is certainly good and the principal conditioning is really of the best. The team boasted of several good runners among whom were Anthony Guerino and Paul Bozigian. Mr. Sweeney claims some credit for developing Paul Bozigian as a run- ner because he says that Paul was always being chased away from the Sweeney grape vines and in the process he learned to run very fast. .,, . . ,,,. , ., 4? . Gab' Badzetddl The second year of girls' basketball was well under way at the end of Christmas vacation at Milford High School, under the coaching of Miss Gloria Vasile, Physical Education Instructor. Sixty girls attended the first practice. Miss Vasile with the help of the two Co-Captains Jean La Preste and Dotty Iannetti cut the team to twenty-one players. Their first opponents were the Milford High Jay-Vees wearing boxing gloves. The game was won by the girls in the last quarter. The Milford girls were entered into the trial Midland League and played eight sched- uled games. The Varsity team's starting players included Co-Capt. Jean La Preste, Louise Calabrese, and Mary Federico at forward positions. Co-Capt. Dotty lannetti, Catherine Liberto, and Elaine Celozzi at guard positions gave the opposite forwards much trouble.
