It is our hope and desire that during your hours of reminis¬ cence you may find within the covers of this hook those personally treasured scenes and achievements that you cherished in your high school days. It is the hope of the Yearbook Staff that this hook will he a worthy successor to those that have come before, and that it will serve as a record of the events and accomplishments of the era which we consider to he the “BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.” % I § I I I I bedicatia+i ‘ ' The best portion of a good life are the little, nameless, remembered, acts of kindness and, of love. ' ' ' These lines show the true picture of our teacher and friend, who, through her pleasing personality, genial nature, and whole-hearted co-operation in our curricular and extra-curricular activities, has endeared herself to our students. With sincere gratitude, therefore, we dedicate this sixty-fifth edition of the OAK, LILY, and IVY, to Mid.A GatUe ii+te £. Gusiti+t our able instructor and willing adviser. Mi4A Catherine £, Qu Uin Miss Calarese Miss Eva Burns Mr. DiBattista Miss Whipple IdminitJAatio-n School Committee Miss Pianca Miss Mary Burns Mr. Consoletti Miss Agnes Lynch 1. Miss Curtin 2. Mrs. Burns 3. Miss Farese 4. Mr. Metcalf 5. Mr. O ' Donnell 6. Miss Pyne 7. Mr. Espanet 8. Miss Claire Lynch 9. Mr. Brucato 10. Mr.Moran 11. Mr. Lancisi 12. Miss Callanan These are the teachers who have directed our lives for the past four years. They have imparted to us much valuable information which we may use in our future lives as citizens. To them we express our grateful thanks for all their aid and our hope that they may co ntinue in their wonderful work. Do you want to become an efficient secretary? Then visit our office practice room which is under the capable supervision of Miss Farese, our commercial department head. None of us will ever forget the interesting meeting of the Junior Science Club, held under the competent direction of Mr. Metcalf, our genial physics and biology teacher. Are you looking for Mr. Moran? He is our ubiquitous Guidance Director who is liable to be found anywhere from the boiler room to the third floor offering advice and guidance to the pupils. Have you ever passed A-15 and heard some noises which seemed to resemble music? It was probably either the French or German Club holding a meeting under the direction of Miss Pianca, our amiable foreign language expert. At different times of the day when you pass Dr. Ryan ' s room, you may either hear Latin verbs being conjugated or Shakespeare being discussed. Neither class is ever boring, Dr. Ryan is forever telling us amusing anecdotes to help lighten our dreary talks. Would you like to learn: 1. How to run a movie projector; 2. How to use a Leica or a Zeiss; 3. How to drive a car; 4. The Dagger Speech; 5. To publish a yearbook; 6. Who won World War II? Drop into B-15. Many an expert typist has come from Miss Eva Burns ' Class, where pleasure and work are mixed to the perfect combination. The work she has done in making future secretaries will long be remembered. The dainty petite woman who teaches geography and French is a patient and efficient instructress. She must have some sixth sense, for she always seems k know who is talk¬ ing even with her back turned. Miss Calarese is one of our most energetic teachers. She is very conscientious and is always examing the ledgers of her bookk eeping students. Has she ever asked you, Is it a debit or a credit? Mrs. Margaret Burns is the very tiny woman who has charge of our budding chemists. Don ' t let outward appearances deceive you, however, for although she is very small in stature, she is great in mind and heart. No one can decide whether Francis Fitter Cahill is more at home on the playing field or seated behind his desk in Room B-8. When his classes are in session, whether they be on the football field, or in the classroom, the golden rule is strictly adhered to. To Miss Dorothy Callahan, our dignified and sedate English teacher, we give thanks for many a pleasant hour spent delving into the mysteries of the English language. The memory of Miss Callanan ' s Friday history quizzes will forever remain in our minds Mr. DiGiannantonio Dr. Ryan Miss Colavita Miss O ' Connell b and the knowledge gleaned in her classes form a foundation for our future life. Sometimes we wonder how Miss Cenedella can retain her calm composure with the high school band practicing in the room below A-2. The English dictation must go on, and she does her level best to keep it going smoothly. Miss Colavita is a recent addition to the teaching staff of the high school and a perma¬ nent one we hope. She is the one who starts those freshmen off on the right foot with her advice. Do you want to know why x is the unknown, or why it snows? Our science and algebra teacher, Mr. Consoletti can probably explain these phenomena to you. The freshmen cer¬ tainly look awed by his enlightening explanations. Not only does Miss Curtin serve as a teacher of commercial subjects, but she is always on hand when the Student Council needs advice. We cannot fully express our thanks to her for her excellent counselling. Another recent addition to the staff is Mr. DiBattista, our good-natured Italian teacher. Where would the Dante Club be without him? His classes are fun to take part in, never too serious, never too frivolous. No one ever seems to know where Mr. Espanet is. He may be teaching, coaching the football team, or giving physical education drill to the children of the grammar school grades. But wherever he is, his pleasing manner goes with him. No business student has ever completed his course of study without being taught by Miss Agnes Lynch. Energetic and full of vim and vigor, she is well liked by all. Did you ever see a small figure darting down the corridor? It was probably Miss Claire Lynch, who is so small she could be taken for a freshman. Those science experiments that she performs really are something to see. If you want to learn how to speak distinctly and walk and sit correctly, see Miss O ' Con¬ nell. She adds to the reading of Shakespeare ' s works by her fine interpretations. If you need a book for a book report, visit the library, where Mr. O ' Donnell, besides teaching history and commercial law, reigns. Is he the reason why the library is always full of students? The ability of Miss Margaret Pyne to teach the fundamentals of business training is shown by the products of her labor, good, efficient business men and women all. Was that William Bendix who just passed by? No, it was our excellent physical educa¬ tion director, Mr. Charles Brucato. His excellence in the teaching of baseball fundamentals is shown by the number of trophies won by our team last year. Are you a patron of the Arts? Under the direction of Mr. DiGiannantonio and Miss Whipple, our appreciation of the finer things in life was encouraged. Every one would like to lead a band but few do it with the finesse of Ben whose versa¬ tility was responsible for the success of many of our appearances at civic functions. Mr. Sweeney Miss Callahan Miss Cenedella Mr. Cahill 9 Scltoal Gamnuttee David I. Davoren, Superintendent; W. Wallace O ' Brien; Atty. Anna M. (Berardi) O ' Brien, Vice Chairman; Dr. Nicholas A. Mastroianni, Chairman; Dr. Nicholas J. Capece; Atty. William V. Bellantonio; Marco A. Balzarini. The guiding force of the Milford School System is the School Committee. This capable group of men and one woman is a versatile one representing many important professions and positions. Mr. Balzarini, for example, in addition to his position as school committeeman is chairman of the Milford Board of Selectmen and Dr. Capece, also a committeeman, is chairman of the Milford Board of Health. We are proud of these capable and intelligent directors of our school system and believe that they are owed a debt of gratitude for their conscientious planning. These efficient leaders have worked painstakingly to make our stay at Milford High School The Best Years of Our Lives. 10 bav-id 9. jbavo- ' ien Superintendent of Schools President: John Mazzone Vice President: Elvira Sidoni Secretary: Eleanor Femina Treasurer: Joseph D ' Amelio JOYCE MARION BALLOU Ambition: Pianist Hobby: Roller Skating Pet Aversion: Poison Ivy Aetivities: Student Association 1, 2, 3, 4; Camera Club; Commer¬ cial Club; Reporter 1; Theory of Music. That was the Monday, the day which began the most important week in your high school career, the week on which you based so many hopes and expectations. That day began Senior Week, and now as we look back fondly on its memory, we feel sorry we can not do it all over again. The names of the members of the Senior Week Committees were announced by Mr. Tosches in March, after much deliberation by him and several other members of the faculty on the character of the students nominated. When Mr. Moran had organized this group, they held an election. The com¬ mittee nominated Angelo Niro and Geral¬ dine Vesperi co-chairmen. Under their careful supervision, preparations began for the great week. After that, the mem¬ bers of the committee went about the school looking like cats who had just swallowed canaries, and, try as we might, we could not unearth any of their secrets. This year the Milford High School Student Council Constitution was adopted and a copy of the Milford High School Handbook was distributed to every student in the school. Everyone will always look with joy and satisfaction upon the many and successful programs the association brought to us. The Council will always be remembered for the worth-while drives which it held. Among these were the Thanksgiving and Chiistmas Salvation Army Drive, Junior Red Cross and March-of-Dimes Drives. The home-room teachers along with the student body helped these drives to be successful. Various committees which functioned under the eyes of the Student Council made it possible for our school to carry oul an efficient program which benefited everyone concerned. The Building and Grounds Committee fostered the idea of cleanliness and neatness among the pupils. The Election Committee helped carry on the democratic process among our classmates. The election of repre¬ sentatives impressed our minds of the necessity of good government and the realization that selection must be based, on our own good judgment and the sound character of the candidate. As usual .messages of condolence and baskets of fruit were sent to students who were ill during the school year. Programs in the auditorium were sponsored. These varied from the excellent puppet show to the movie Great Expectations which was presented late in April. The square dance put on by the club was enjoyed by all those attending. The editor-in-chief, Barbara Trant, and the workers of the paper should be con¬ gratulated for their wonderful work which brought us the up-t o-date news of the school. The officers elected this year were: John Petracca, president; Ventura Zingale, vice- president; Diana Rosati, secretary; and Rudolph Iacovelli, treasurer. Commercial Club Quintet at Christmas Party. 51 bante Gluh Mr. Di Battista was our new teacher of the Italian language. In his Italian classes he held discussions to acquaint his students further with the language, customs, and history of Italy. With the dues paid by the members of II Circolo Dante, there were various parties held by the club. The officers of the club are: President, Grace Ferrucci; Vice-President, An¬ gelo Niro; Secretary, Eveline Celozzi; Treasurer, Francis DiAntonio. We suffered one disappoinment during the early days of spring. Our plays which were to be put on in the John C. Lynch Auditorium under the direction of Mr. Di Battista had to be postponed for a week until our leading lady recovered from laryngitis. We were rewarded, how¬ ever, by a fine performance which was witnessed by a large and appreciative audience. Our leading lady was Eveline Celozzi; Angelo Niro played the leading male role. Angelo proved his versatility by doing as fine a job as any actor could have done. This was shortly after Angelo had been ©n the platform in the Legion Oratorical Contest. The name of the two plays which wer eput on in the John C. Lynch Auditorium were Scuola Di Cam- pagna , which told about hte life of a country school house, and A E I e , the story of a writer. Members of Dante Club who appeared in play. 52 fy ie tclt Gluh Le Cercle de Jeanne d ' Arc, has completed another year. We shall never forget our most interesting discussions with Mademoiselle Pianca about styles, tasty French dishes, and life in France today. One of our most memorable occasions was the Christmas Party which Miss Pianca gave us at her home. We are very happy to have this opportunity to express our gratitude to Mile. Pianca for the many kindnesses that she has etxtended to us. Many times we have taken into consideration the wise words of Mile. Pianca ' s motto, which we believe everyone should practice — Rien Sans Rien. The officers of Le Cercle de Jeanne d ' Arc were Angelo Niro, President; John Maher, Vice- President; Barbara Richardson, Secretary; Catherine Glennon, Treasurer. With the world situation uppermost in everyone ' s mind, our discussions of France became increasingly important. Knowledge of a people and their lan¬ guage somehow instills in a person a sense of comradeship which otherwise would be hard to achieve. The Friendship Train had a greater significance because we realized the need of the people who were the recipients of American generos¬ ity. In like manner the Merci Train which visited our American Cities took on a new meaning because of our efforts to under¬ stand and know the French people and their language. Our French Club Officers look over Mont St. Michel. 53 ben, beutkche Ve iein Der Deutsche Verein was reorganized in October under the direction of Miss Margaret Pianca, our German instructor. Membership was limited to students taking second year German. The following officers were elected: President, John Maher; Vice-President, Cath¬ erine Glennon; Secretary, Mary Ann Rando; Treasurer, John Mazzone. The purpose of the Deutsche Verein is to create an interest in the country of Germany, its language, and its customs, and its people. Once every week at our meetings the essentials of German are forgotten and the more pleasant bits of knowledge seep through our minds and add enjoyment to the study of German. Our minds often wandered far from the classroom as Miss Pianca would give her interesting lectures on Germany. It is easy to see that the study of German is not only necessary for scholastic achievements but a source of interest, enjoyment and pleasure to all who study it. We are very glad to have this opportunity to express our grati¬ tude to Fraulein Pianca for the many kindnesses that she has extended to us. We will always remember the Christmas Party which was enjoyed by both the members of the German and French Clubs and into which she herself had put so much time and effort. We wish to thank. Miss Pianca for making the Der Deutsche Verein a success. We also wish to extend our wishes for success to the future members of the Deutsche Verein, that they carry on the work so capably accomplished by the German Class of 1949. Gluch Auf. 54 fjunio-n. Science Club The members of the Junior Science Club will always be very grateful to Mr. Metcalf and will remember his untiring efforts to make our club a success. In October, at the first meeting during the nineteenth year of organization of this club, the following officers were elected: President, Robert Nargi; Vice-President, Louis Giamarco; Secretary, Geraldine Vesperi; Treasurer, Leonard Rago. The members of this group worked on individual experiments at each meeting in prepara¬ tion for a scientific exhibit. The work done by these junior scientists is both interesting and educational, and may be the beginning of a scientific career for some of our students. Although the aim of this club is to en¬ courage an interest in science, we will always remember the good times we had at our dances that were put on by the club. The Christmas Party was one of the most colorful and enjoyable events of the year. All members and invited guests spent a very pleasant evening with re¬ freshments and dancing around a well- decorated Christmas tree. These dances prove to everyone that Mr. Metcalf excels as highly in the leadership of social func¬ tions as he does over the Bunsen burners of the laboratory. It has been a privilege for all of us to have a teacher and friend as willing and understanding as Mr. Metcalf. Scientists of the future discuss experiment on light. 7he Qlee Club LAI: y -df ■ il I i t t i | Mk 1 m rn K HN j lCL u i The Glee Club under the supervision of Mr. Alex DiGiannantonio has worked hard all year long to furnish entertainment to the studsnt body. This year, for the first time, the Glee Club was open to all classes. Hours of faithful practice were spent on songs old and new. Mr. DiGiannantonio was insistent upon perfection and his constant drill upon the funda¬ mentals of the theory of music have been rewarded. The early days of our organization were days of constant drill. We looked forward to our public appearances at the vari¬ ous events which were scheduled for the school year. The Glee Club was one of the feature attractions at the Christmas Party held in the John C. Lynch Auditorium. Soft gentle hymns and stirring Christmas Carols presented by the Glee Club were climaxed by a solo rendered by Alice Morse. During the same Christmas season the Glee Club was received with great enthu¬ siasm by the people of Milford who ap¬ plauded their carol singing on the streets on Christmas Eve. Midst the setting made beautiful by a heavy fall of soft snow, the soloists and chorus made melodious the night air as they marched from Lincoln Square to Draper Park. The crowd which braved the storm was well rewarded and was unanimous in its praise of the skill and fortitude of our fellow class mates. Miss Morse sang a solo at the Christmas Party. 56 MitiAtsiel S taui The class of 1949 can well be proud of its participation in what was acclaimed the best Minstrel Show in M. H. S. The singing talents and personalities of Beverly Miller and Dorothy Volpicelli were heard for the fourth consecutive year. As a proof of Beverly ' s versatility, she also impersonates the famous radio comedian, Vera Vague. Dancers Marilyn Tessicini and Snooky Bertanazzi gave their usual smooth performances as did accordionists Nicholas Guido and George Marino. The attire of the chorus of over 50 was especially effective, with the boys dressed in M. H. S. sweaters, and the cheerleaders and majorettes in their uniforms. The entrance of the six endmen, Lloyd Butch McCausland, Clement Moran, Jr., Louis Snooky Bertanazzi, Irwin Mack- low, Rico Niro, and Alfred Rossetti was a novel and loud affair which contributed to the hilarity of the show. One of the unusual features of the per¬ formance was a fashion show, narrated by Barbara Ann Richardson. Other skits were by Victor Filosa, Harley Breault, Paul Areano, Donald Fisher, and Anthony Ferraro. To Mr. Lancisi go our thanks for help¬ ing us have such an outstanding Mi nstrel Show in our best year at M. H. S. 57 Some of the principals in our Minstrel Show. 7 6e Hand Holding its first tag day event since 1935, our band, acclaimed as one of the best small- school bands in the state, held a two-day drive to secure new uniforms. The town co-operated wholeheartedly in this effort and uniforms were made to the specification of Mr. Lancisi and members of the band. Added to the usual autumn football games, the band this year has played at numerous civic activities. The Safety Show, Armistice Day, and playing at the Oratorical Contest were examples of its performances. Christmas was an active period, added to playing carols in the corridors of the school, the band made a caroling tour of the business district and also led enthusiastic carolers through a snowstorm in the Milford Christmas promenade. After Christmas, preparation immedi¬ ately started for the annual concert. Songs of different lands were included, plus the current favorite Lady of Spain. The concert was its usual success due largely to the leadership of Ben C. Lancisi, every band member ' s friend. The Memorial Day March with mem¬ bers, resplendent in their well-earned uni¬ forms, marked the end of another delight¬ ful year for members and listeners alike. We know that the band, under Ben ' s direction, will continue through the years to bring honor to our school. Mr. Lancisi and members of the band inspect the new uniforms. 58 Game ' ia GluL For the first time in the history of the Milford High School, a camera club was organized. The purpose of this club is to enlighten its members in the ways of using a camera properly. A dark room was opened on the third floor of the building for the sole use of this club. Under the capable instruction of Mr. Gerard Sweeney, the faculty adviser, and the officers of this club, many interesting and pleasant meetings have been held. If you see someone chasing you with a gleam in his eye and a camera in his hand, don ' t be frightened. It ' s only a camera club enthusiast searching for a subject for his next picture. We are sure that this club has become an incentive to its members, encouraging them to take better pictures, and we hope that it has set a precedent for other classes to follow. The class of 1949 congratulates you camera club members on a good start and wishes you a very successful con¬ tinuation. Keep up the good work! These pupils have maintained a high scholastic average throughout their four years at Milford High. This accomplishment was made possible only because they had made the decision early enough in their school careers that studies were really important, and that preparation for living entailed much hard work. We offer congratulations on their accomplishments and best wishes for suc¬ cess. The plans made now by these, the best students of our high years, should be realized by each of them. Teaching the legal profession, and medicine are their goals. They represent our best hope for future years. From this group we expect great things. They have made the most of The Best Years of Their Lives. 60 SHUTS fyootbaJi Basketball BaSeball Coaches Cahill and Espanet with Captains Santoro and Giacomuzzi 61 tyaotbcdl Football and cool weather are happy words describing the fall of the year. We had both in good measure during our four years at Milford High. Our latest edition of the football team suffered several defeats at the hands of several rather rough opponents. On several occasions during the season a break decided games which might well have gone our way. The toughest of all was the touchdown run in the St. Mary ' s game which was called back. The scoreless tie could have been a victory. Character training is an important item in the curriculum of the modern high school. Sports play a tremendous role in development of character. The ability to think quickly, to act fast, to play the game according to rules and to work together as a unit are important phases in the training of an individual. These are the daily diet of the football enthusiast. Co-opera¬ tion and teamwork are essential in the class room, on the gridiron, or on the battlefield of life. We honestly feel that the lessons learned are more important than victories won. We caution teams of the future to watch out for a football. It takes some funny bounces, but with the will to win and with the desire to play the game, a player will not only enjoy the game but reap the benefits of lessons which will remain with him long after that last Thanksgiving Day game. 62 Stocio, after a long run with the ball, is being tackled by an opponent. Qa4.hetball r Jea n The hallowed walls of the John C. Lynch auditorium had been witness to the strains of Civic Music; the voices of the Glee Club harmonized within its confines. Sometime in December a new melody was added to the symphony. A basketball bouncing off the back- board makes a rather dull and uninteresting sound. A basketball hitting those strings creates a beautiful song if it happens often enough and all the scoring is done by our side. As usual our objective for the whole season was the St. Mary ' s game. The Saints had a well-drilled team of experienced players whc were able to outlast our club and won the Alzerini Trophy. Playing on the huge floor at the Armory was not to our advantage but like Brooklyn, we are looking forward to another year when the rivalry will be renewed. Prospects for another year seem bright. Sev¬ eral players came along fast toward the end of the season and were starring on the first team. Coach Espanet in his first year as our bas¬ ketball coach showed the team that hard work and team spirit will pay off. Team welfare is always of greater importance than the in¬ dividual and though victory is always sweet, honorable defeat is not worthy of blame. Guerriere, Giamarco and Moran are waiting for the rebound from the backboard. feaiehall Jeam For the second successive year, the 1948 baseball team enjoyed a very successful season losing only two games. They copped the Midland League, the St. Mary ' s series, and the Small School Championship. The 1949 squad, under the watchful eye of Coach Charlie Brucato and Captain George Boni, are hoping to annex another title. Last year ' s stars who will help our cause include: Captain George Boni, Lou Giamarco, Joe Stoico, Bob Guerriere, Bob Callery, Neil Jionzo, Ed Trant, Sonny Kearnan, Sonny Tomaso, Fran DeManche, and Jim Giacomuzzi. According to the law of averages Milford should retain the top berth in the Midland League. Counting on a strong punch at the plate and a sound infield, the team should do well against any opposition. By the time this book is published, the seaso n will have been completed. The team will have shared its victories and defeats, but we feel sure they will end up on top both in victories won and the memories of our classmates. Their ac¬ complishments will do much toward mak¬ ing these the best years of our lives. IdJluf, emocsuzcy Waiki By: BARBARA RICHARDSON (Winner of Second Prize in Elks ' Essay Contest) Genuine democracy does not cultivate the pretense that all men are equal in every respect . . . but provides equal opportunity, equal justice, and the recognition of essential qualities of human personality. So said Archbishop Cushing in a speech delivered re¬ cently in New York. This statement aptly expresses the reason why democracy works here in America. Equal opportunity, equal justice, and the recognition of the basic qualities of human personality represent the principal aims of our democracy. America provides equal opportunity for everyone, especially in our schools. We are able to run tor class offices, participate in student government, and attain membership on many school committees. It is in school that we learn the true meaning of democracy by prac¬ ticing it. Equal justice is provided in American courts for all from the poorest to the most influential citizen. Trials are conducted by impartial judges and juries who care not who the man is, but merely whether he is guilty or innocent. If a man is too poor to afford a lawyer, one is appointed to plead his cause. Laws are made for us all for our own protection. In other countries laws are enforced not for the protection of the individual, but to keep him subser¬ vient to the state. Nothing in America is suggestive of the tyranny of Communism or Fascism. The recent World War showed how precious American democracy is to the citizens who enjoy its benefits. The people worked together for our country in the home, in fields, the fac¬ tories, and war plants as well as in the numerous services. It was not a case of defending the nation solely against devastation by bombs. America could have been ruined completely by internal wrangling. If all groups had not functioned as patriotic units working together for the preservation of America, it is quite probable that our democracy would no longer exist. Freedom in the United States was preserved by men and women who, unlike totalita¬ rian slaves, worked and fought gladly to maintain the democracy which is our heitage. Our government is far stronger than it was when we were an insignificent country just receiving recognition by the established nations. Through the years because of the intel¬ ligent men picked from the ranks of common citizens by the voters, laws have been passed to strengthen the United States, now the greatest nation in the world. We should be proud of our heritage, and protect it with everything we own. Let us emulate General Dwight D. Eisenhower who said, when rejecting nomination for the Presidency of the United States, I hope to devote the time left ... in preaching, teaching and living Americanism. We want America to continue to be the world ' s greatest land, and we want to perpetuate our beliefs for succeeding generations. We wish America to remain a democracy. We want democracy, we like democracy, and we benefit from democracy. That is why democracy works here in America. The people make it work. Miss Lynch ' s Stenography Class Mr. Sweeney ' s English Class jbemacsiacif ' ll an.hi. allele By: GERALDINE VESPERI (Winner of Third Prize in Milford Mercantile Bureau Essay Contest) From the bright and gay suns wept beaches of California to the bitter cold of frosty Maine, democracy is a living form of government. Now, after many years of trials and tribulations, it can be pro¬ nounced as successful. It works here. Scorned and laughed at because of its meager beginning, the democratic gov¬ ernment has come a long way since the time of George Washington. Emerging victoriously from the recent world strug¬ gle, it has proved what a government built on faith can accomplish. There is no reason why it can not or will not continue to function; it has proven itself worthy. The many internal dangers threatening our government have never been able to overcome the towering strength of our democracy. The Ku Klux Klan, which with its fanatical ranting for so many years has tried to arouse racial and religious prejudice, has failed to make any outstanding progress. The Communist party has likewise tried many times unsuccessfully to cause disruption in our government. We Americans want neither the Communism of Stalin or the Fascism of Hitler; we cherish the democracy which has flourished for many genera¬ tions and which has provided us with our precious liberties. Among the freedoms we enjoy is the right to buy, sell, and trade our goods. This is a very important phase of democracy because without a free exchange of goods, we cannot have a free people. This freedom, however, is only one of the numerous benefits we receive in a democratic government. Our own high school is a perfect example of a working democracy. Through¬ out its four years, democracy functions freely. Ours is the right to choose and plan our four year course of study. As members of the school, we have the right to hold office or to vote for qualified candidates nominated for these offices. Our democratic class meetings exem¬ plify the freedom of assembly. Here everyone ' s opinion including that of a minority group is heard and respected. Democracy functions also in all fields of sport where the players are judged for what they really are. The very fact that a boy or girl of any religion can enroll in our school proves that we enjoy free¬ dom of religion. The school, however, is merely the forerunner of the adult world where democracy operates successfully. Popular elections for state and town offi¬ cials, the freedom of the press, and the privilege of choosing one ' s religion are but a continuation of the democracy of the American school. Founded on faith and love for mankind, established to help America move for¬ ward in the march of time, democracy has lived and flourished for almost two hundred years. And in order to keep it alive for two hundred more, Americans must take steps to attain world peace. The United Nations must be given our full support. Finally, the people in foreign lands must be taught the fundamentals of a working democracy. We must convince them that democracy does work here. 69 1.
