Our Administration in Good Hands Congratulations and Best Wishes to the Class of 1945. May you continue to carry on with the same lofty ideals that have in¬ spired you in your undergraduate days. The fine impression you leave behind augurs well for the future. Good luck and God bless you. Sincerely, Frank C. Berry. We are deeply grateful to the members of the school committee for arranging and carrying on our school program in a man¬ ner beneficial to all. We are cognizant of the fact that this is no easy task, particu¬ larly in wartime; however they have done a thorough job in a most conscientious manner. Although we never had Mr. Frank C. Berry as principal, we have come to know and admire the thoughtful and efficient manner in which he has administered his duties as Superintendent of the Milford Schools. He has always had the student’s welfare at heart. Many good wishes for your continued success! 6 Miss Del Castello and her attractive office assistants, standing left to right: Mary Carey, Connie Wright, Tina Oneschuk, Eleanor Mongiat, Anna Peronti. Seated left to right: Theresa Del Cas¬ tello, Christine Antelli, Jean Strobeck and Helen Hommand. Principal ' s Office Center of Activity To the members of the class of 1945: In retrospect we recall that you began your high school careers in the Fall of 1941, a date which will be stamped in his¬ tory as “the end of the beginning”. The summer of 1945 brings with it your gradu¬ ation, and in all probability this date will be earmarked in the annals of history as “the beginning of the end”. Yours is the same class which 12 years ago started out in the pursuit of formal education during the year of 1933, which already has been recorded in history as the time at which the world’s biggest and longest depres¬ sion was at its greatest depth. From the above it is quite obvious that during the entire era of your schooldays either economic and financial depression or bloodshed and warfare have set up about us living conditions of continual turmoil. “Acquirement and pleasure should go hand in hand” is an educational axiom that we might well consider, and accord¬ ingly make allowances for the obstacles under which you have carried on. As we approach the horizon of better and happier days ahead always keep in mind your Class Motto, “Virtue Alone is True Nobility”. Apply it to your every thought, word and deed, and your educa¬ tion will have been realized according to a now famous quotation which states: “The general purposes of education are to pre¬ serve the good, to repudiate the evil—and to give scope to the sublime law of pro¬ gression”. James A. Higgiston, Acting Principal. 7 THE COMMERCIAL FACULTY GROUP is, from left to right: Miss Pinardi, Miss Kur- lansky, Miss Curtin, Mr. Moran, Miss Agnes Lynch, Mr. Higgiston, acting Principal, Miss Eva Burns, Mr. O’Donnell, Miss Farese, Miss Pyne, Miss Calarese, Miss Molinari. They capably developed our skills, abilities, and aptitudes to meet the demand for office workers. We of the class of 19f 5 are happy to dedicate these pages to the faculty of the Milford High School. We truly appre¬ ciate the patience and time that they have given us both in and out of the classroom. They have certainly guided us toward our motto, “Virtue Alone Is True Nobility”. CORP. J. They are left to right: Lena Puntonio, Blanche Meldonian, Nellie Barsamian, Philip Lucier, Arthur Clarridge, Joseph Paradiso, Theresa Schiavone, Doreen Scott, and Florence Fertitta. Oratorical Contestants Held In High Esteem TENSE MOMENTS! Eight solemn figures are seen in the front row—the girls, giving that final pat to their hair; the boys nervously adjusting their ties. Miss O’Connell goes about spreading calm, saying, “Now relax!” The first noble contestant goes up to the stage and the others follow in turn. Once again the John E. Swift Oratorical Contest has been handled in a most capable fash¬ ion by those students who wrote the best essays. The judges unanimously declared Florence Fertitta the winner. The other contestants all acquitted themselves so well that the judges found it impossible to confer “honorable mention” upon any one. The contestants all gave evidence of the careful training received from Miss Sadie O’Connell, teacher of speech. The orations were delightfully inter¬ spersed with vocal duets by Jean Strobeck and Tina Oneschuk, accompanied by Verna Parker. With world conditions in such a chaotic state, The Constitution of The United States is a most timely topic, and its pre¬ sentation by these students made the audi¬ ence reacquainted with the breadth and scope of this famed document. They certainly chose some top notch entertainers. Student Association Scores Again The student body poured into the audi¬ torium early in September to hear and enjoy a dramatic portrayal of Rip Van Winkle given by John E. Hines, who re¬ turned as a most welcome guest. This assembly program was sponsored by the Milford High School Student Association and definitely started the ball rolling for a most successful year. During the course of the year many other assemblies, which proved to be both entertaining and educational, were spon¬ sored by this organization. This, of course, isn’t all that the Associa¬ tion does for its members. A token of remembrance is sent to a member who is confined to his home because of illness; also, a floral tribute is sent to the home of a member where death has occurred. It is hoped that future classes will con¬ tinue to uphold the high standards which have been set this year by the Milford High School Student Association. 40 Abuve we have the presidents of the various clubs connected with the school. Club Presidents Set the Pace The popular Junior Science Club, under the direction of Mr. Fred Metcalf chose Bradford Doane, ’45, as its leader. The reorganized Commercial Club under the capable leadership of Miss Eva Burns, bloomed out its fullest this year with Marie Tocchi, ’45, as its president—prov¬ ing that this isn’t always a man’s world! The German and French classes of Miss Margaret Pianca selected Bradford Doane and Arthur Clarridge, respectively, as their club leaders. Miss Martha Molinari’s Dante Club for Italian students elected Ralph Parente, ’45, as president. This year, under the patient and help¬ ful guidance of Mr. Harold Moran, Super¬ visor, and Miss Mary Burns, Assistant Supervisor, The Press Club was organized for those students of good scholastic stand¬ ing interested in journalism. Edward Broughey, ’45, was unanimously chosen president. That we have such capable young lead¬ ers in our high school portends well for the future of our country. Carry on, Presidents! 41 Here we see the O. L. I. Committee, which tried to make this wartime edition the best ever. O. L. I. Committee Works Diligently Early in December, Principal James A. Higgiston announced that the following students would comprise the 1945 0. L. I. Committee: Charles V. Touhey, Jr., Editor-in-chief; Charles L. Piscia, Busi¬ ness Manager; Lillian O’Rourke, Associ¬ ate Editor; Arthur Clarridge, Circulation Manager; Nellie Barsamian, and Theresa Schiavone, Literary Editors; Stanley Nalewajko, Sports Editor; Jennie De Cesare, Script-Editor; Celia Piglargi, Photo-Editor. Associates: Christine An- telli, Ruth Baker, Blanche Balian, Philip Lucier, Elinor McCoy, Lena Puntonio, Marguerite Brita, Bradford Doane, James Sangster, Lucy Dota, Florence Fertitta, and Tina Oneschuk. At our first meeting with Mr. Higgis¬ ton, we were supplied with the necessary information and credentials and sallied forth, with high hopes, in search of sponsors and advertisers. In the succeeding weeks, with the help of Miss Crane and Miss Callahan we com¬ pleted the difficult task of supplying writ¬ ten “copy” for our book. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. James A. Higgiston, faculty advis¬ er, Miss Margaret M. Pyne, financial ad¬ viser and the Misses Agnes L. Crane and Dorothy M. Callahan, literary advisers, for forfeiting so much of their time to guide us in our work. 42 Above is the committee which planned such an enjoyable Commencement Week. Mary Cecchi, one of our honor students, and a member of this committee was absent when the photo was taken. Commencement Week Committee Plans Suitable After twelve long studious (?) years, the Class of 1945 realized that it was “on its way out”. Our Senior Week commit¬ tee, under the expert guidance of Mr. Hig- giston, and Mr. Moran, planned “big things for us. Monday-festivities formally opened by the observation of Class Day and the dis¬ tribution of gifts in the auditorium. The afternoon found us in town park, hilari¬ ously engaged in sports. That evening, tired but happy, we limped to the audi¬ torium where we enjoyed both the humor and solemnities of Sdnior Night. Tuesday morning and the eagerly awaited distribution of THE yearbook; then to the State for the annual theatre party. Light lunches that day—saved our appetites for the class banquet held that evening at the Elks Home. June 13th will live in our memories for¬ ever. Was there ever a more beautiful or solemn graduation? Thursday—“To be or not to be”—that was the $64 question concerning our ex¬ cursion ! The alumni reunion was held Friday night. Well, what do you know! We are now alumni! 43 Above is the entire cast of the Tenth Animal Minstrel Show of Milford High School. Minstrel Show Delights Record Breaking Audience Curtain! Lights!! Action!!! The 1945 Minstrel Show is on under the capable supervision of Mr. Ben C. Lancisi. Interlocutor, Bradford Doane, is seated in the center of an attractive row of par¬ ticipants. The endmen are entertaining, bringing gustos of laughter to the audi¬ ence. Pleasant memories were revived by the appearance of stars of former shows: the Balian Twins, Blanche Meldonian, Gloria Griffith, Helen Morin, Philip Lucier, and Connie Wright. A highlight of the evening was the side¬ splitting performance of the German Band led by Professor Ivanoffovitch (Leonard Miller) “famous German Maestro”. Another feature was the silent movie, featuring Arthur Winslow, villain, whose attempts to foreclose the mortgage on “Home Sweet Home” were thwarted by hero, Philip Lucier. Attired in colorful gowns the members of the chorus formed a vivid background for the entire show. Applause! More Applause!! Regrets!!! The show is over in too short a time. We left, singing many of the hit tunes from the show. 44 Milford High School has one of the most colorful and snappiest bands in the state. We are proud of the fine show our band always gives at our football games and other activities. Band Enjoys Successful and Entertaining Season Yes, we too felt the ruling hand of the 0. D. T. Our pleasant visits to the “bat¬ tlefields of the gridiron” had to be cur¬ tailed because of transportation difficul¬ ties; however we strived to excel at home games and uphold the band’s high stand¬ ard. The band, under its expert and skillful director, Mr. Ben Lancisi, portrayed true Americanism when called upon frequently by various clubs and organizations to par¬ ticipate in patriotic events. Each time it brought color and zest to the activity and honor to our school. The “German Band”, made up of mem¬ bers of the band, had a leading part in the Minstrel Show and was instrumental in the latter’s success. The annual concert, the highlight of the year, once again delighted the audience as it rendered a varied and pleasing program. The year’s activities were brought to a successful climax when on Memorial Day the band paid tribute to our honored dead. 45 A wartime team of Red and White warriors were sparked by the brilliant play of the Seniors’ Capt. Joe Graziano, Tony Pilla, Ray McCausland, Hank Bianchi, and Hank Iacovelli. Football Squad Hard Hit by Wartime Demands Handicapped by a lack of experience and the potential weight, our Milford High School football team suffered nine setbacks in as many starts during the 1944 gridiron campaign. With four reliable backfieldmen and one lineman returning to the ranks, our 1944 prospects appeared to be as bright as the twinkle in a little baby’s eye. However, Sally Micelotti, Dick Consigli, and Don Johnson signed up with a new coach—the man with the whiskers—just prior to the football season. Captain Joe Graziano, and Tony Pilla were the only two expe¬ rienced gridmen left to answer Coach Ernie Roberti’s call for football candi¬ dates. Gridiron neophytes dominated the squad; nevertheless they took the field against our friendly traditional rivals— Marlboro, Framingham, and Natick—and fought courageously against overwhelming odds. We are justified in being proud of our fighting football team, which, although outweighed and inexperienced, sparkled radiantly even in defeat. 46 Our men on the Basketball Court. Front row: Tredeau, Votolato, Bianchi, Graziano, and Co- molli. Second row: Consigli, McCausland, Castiglioni, Coach Dagnese, Pederzoli, Sanchione, and Votolato. Basketball Quintet Contends with Great Handicaps We learned (the hard way) that there is much truth in the old idiom, “Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched”. Just prior to the 1944 cage season, our basketball prospects appeared to be as shiny as the bald spot on Bing Crosby’s cranium; however Uncle Sam stepped in and borrowed a few of his nephews from Milford High, leaving our basketball team as crippled as the town of Berlin after a Yank raid. Gloom prevailed over the Milford High rooters, who believed, with the loss of three star veterans, that our boys didn’t stand a chance. But our “mighty mites” courageously delved into battle and “copped” the first three games of the season. They en¬ countered the Tech Tourney teams, Fram¬ ingham and Natick, and fought fiercely against our traditional rival, St. Mary’s. What our 1945 cage squad lacked in stature, it made up in the stiff competi¬ tion it furnished opposing quintets. 47 Above is the gallant baseball team of Milford High. We are confident that they will do their best to complete a successful season. Baseball Nine Reveals Sparkling Array When Coach Vin Dagnese’s initial call for baseball candidates was answered by 40 presumably untalented youngsters, dire prophecies were uttered by our local prog¬ nosticators concerning the coming baseball season of our M. H. S. However, we are happy to announce that these same fore¬ tellers are now swallowing their words. Because of the resourcefulness of Coach Dagnese, a baseball team has been built which is expected to be a top contender for Midland League honors. Behind the consistent clubbing of Joe DiAntonio, Hank Iacovelli, Vic Comolli, and Hal Castiglione, our 1945 squad should send opposing teams staggering like in¬ ebriates. We are confident too that rival batsmen will be about as successful in hit¬ ting Arnold Votolato’s deliveries as the attempts of a toothless individual to masticate a steak dinner. Because we have a deadline to catch, it is impossible for us to inform you of the games’ results. We wouldn’t be surprised though if our boys were in possession of that championship cup right now! 48 in mmm, , HPj I i f T ' 1 s if l Hr Wnnr,,.. rfj ' • A 5; T .- Ml- ■■ ! ; .- • ' : .. ’ . ' • ' .
