MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL MILFORD, DELAWARE DEDICATED WITH PRIDE TO Miss Hastings, Mr. Huth, Mrs. Williams. The Senior Class of 1953 is proud to dedicate its yearbook to Miss Louise Hastings, Mrs. Florence Williams, and Mr. Lochlin Huth. The class appreciates the financial advice from Miss Hastings. She has been a staunch supporter of all the senior activities. Among these were the Christmas Ball, the Senior Bazaar, the yearbook-ad campaign, the sale of senior play tickets, and the Christmas card and candy sales. Mrs. Williams' guiding hand is shown throughout this yearbook. She has given up many hours of her own time so that the class might produce a year- book worth treasuring. Without Mr. Huth's unselfish and tireless efforts, the Senior Trip would never have been such a success. These three teach- ers, advisors, and friends have taken a personal interest in each member of the class and have encouraged each one to take advantage of the op- portunities offered. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. H. Mayhew, Dr. R. Cobbs, Mr. J. Roosa, Mrs. H. Phillips, Mr. W. Kimmel The members of the Board of Education are the elected representatives of our community. These civic-minded people give much of their time in working to improve our educational and recreational facilities. It is they who have been respon- sible for making our years in high school successful, enjoyable, and worth-while. 6 DR. RAMON C. COBBS SUPERINTENDENT A progressive school system must be led by an efficient edu- cator who favors progress. Such a leader is Dr. Ramon C. Cobbs. Passersby recognize this progress when they see the school plant expanded by the new gymnasium, the vocational agriculture shop, and the elementary wing consisting of twenty classrooms. Alumni who enter the buildings find that the library has been moved to a larger room in the rear of the building and away from the interfering street noises, that the home economics depart- ment has been moved to the first floor and furnished with modern equipment, that the manual trainingdepartment has been brought up to date by the addition of the best equipment. Interested vis- itors see also visual aid materials and equipment, an art room for students, science rooms so furnished that laboratory exper- iments can be demonstrated, all classrooms redecorated, acou- stical ceilings in the typing room and halls, and a hall leading from the high school building to the new cafeteria. Not only has Dr. Cobbs expanded and improved the school plant but he has increased the faculty, which he has kept fully staffed despite the teacher shortage. In the student he creates the desire to re- turn as a visitor to Milford High School. MR. M. ALEXANDER GLASMIRE PRINCIPAL Mr. Glasmire has accomplished much for the school and its students since he became principal in 1948. The curriculum has been expanded to include subjects for both the general and the academic student. Through his wisdom and perseverence, our extracurricular program has been expanded, especially in the fields of music and physical education and in the formation of suchclubsas the rifle club, the photography club, the stagecraft club, and the literary organization. Members of the Class of 1953 sincerely appreciate the many opportunities that have been offered as a result of Mr. Glasmire's interest in them as individ- uals. The Seniors are truly thankful for all that he has done to make their past good, their present better, and their future the very best because of their association with him. 7 MILFORD LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Seated: Mrs. Williams, Miss Summers, Mrs. Greene. At the wheel one can find Jim Messick, our class president; his relief-driver, Ran- dall Christensen, is sitting beside him. There on the left, in the back seat sits the chief keeper of the travelogue, Kath- leen Isaacs. Seated next to her is our financial manager, Dorothy Bennett. We seniors did not always have such lux- urious means of going places. We started out in a rejuvenated Maxwell of unknown vintage in 1949. With Randall Christensen wrestling the wheel, Lester Hastings on his right, Bob Donovan paying the bills, and Norma Prettyman keeping the travelogue, we bounced and steamed along through the year, and finally ran out of gas at the door of the cafeteria, where our Fresh- man Dance was in progress. The following year we traded our Maxwell for a Model T, again changing operators. Jehu Evans was now the driv- er, with Charles Betts as relief, Joanne Powell as keeper of the books, and Jack Baynum as budget manager. This year we knew where we were going. Sure enough, our car took us back to the cafe- teria and into the Sophomore Hop. The next year we really made a deal. We traded that Model T for a genuine '39 Chevy, and rolled merrily on our way through our Junior year, when we pre- sented the play Rest Assured, a smash hit. That year Tom Wells took command, with Charles Betts again as Chief assist- ant, Doris Gibson as secretary, and Barbara Sheaffer as treasurer. About mid-term our class rings added a little glitter to the shiny hub caps of our Chevy. We spent days and nights washing, polishing, and decorating our little 39 for the most important show- ing of the year, the Junior Prom, at which point it rubbed radiators with the limousine of the class of '52. At last we are motoring into the world in our sleek convertible. On the road be- hind us, we leave a few pleasant memo- ries -- the Senior play, our long-awaited trip to New York, the Senior Bazaar, and our festive Christmas Ball. As we attend Class Night, the Bacca- laureate services, and finally walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas, we hope in some way to have smoothed the road for those who follow. 31 RATTLES AND BANGS NAME CALLED SAYS LIKES PET PEEVE Adams, T. Jean O'Day leaves all her gym classes to some person who likes calis- thenics. Ginger Pack leaves her driver's license to Kay Wood, who needs it quite badly. Mary Passwaters leaves her position as president of A.W.O.L. to whoever can handle the job. Estrellita Pearson leaves the job of managing the hockey team to Dorothy Webb. Ann Plummer leaves whatever she is unfortunate enough to inherit to Jane Plummer. Joanne Powell leaves her ability of not getting typing assignments finished in one period to anyone who is less fortunate. Jo Ann Powell leaves the many pleasant hours in Latin class to the Romans. Norma Prettyman leaves her ability for always consistently being late to someone with a patient boy friend. Bill Ryder leaves his seat in Miss Hastings' homeroom to Dicky Williams. Jack Scott leaves one slightly used, trained, '36 Ford convertible minus accessories such as a motor to Jesse Webb. Tom Shockley leaves his seat in English class to anyone who wants it. Donald Short leaves his seat in typing class to whoever can fill it. Walter Studte leaves his seat in Eng- lish class to an unfortunate one, whom- ever he may be. Kay Taylor leaves her ability to get along with the gym teacher to her sis- ter, Hannah. Pat Taylor leaves high school to any poor creature who wants it. Doris Van Vorst leaves her seat in Mr. Wolfe's class to her brother, Don- ald. Larry Walton leaves his bad luck to Shirley Lane. Mary Jane Water s leaves her ability to get out of tight parking places to Nancy Phillips, who Mary Jane hopes can do better. Tom Wells leaves the shell-shock of pitching baseball to anyone with good nerves. Helen Wilgus leaves her ability to forget things to Sylvianne Daugherty. Etta Mae Wilson leaves the best of luck to those who remain in good old Milford High. Kathleen Isaacs, Barbara Sheaffer, and Natalie Swanson leave their good physics grades and original lab experi- ments to the poor creatures who will have as much trouble as they did. The Senior girls leave the Junior boys to the girls of the Sophomore Clas s. We, the class of 1953 do hereby declare the above to be our Last Will and Testament and do hereby authorize our president to affix his signature. 37 President of Class of 1953 AROUND THE BEND While cruising around in our once luxurious '53 limousine, we ran into Jim Messick, haberdasher -- play boy, on the Murder-Every-Minute Speedway designed by engineer Bill Leverage. Jim pointed out to us patrolman Richard Lynch giving Ginger Pack another ticket, thus delaying her personal appearance on the latest TV show What Next? emceed by Bob Hitchens. Just recently Ginger and Char- lie Beets had a head-on collision and Charlie is still recuperating in the Mil- ford Memorial Hospital. Since both par- ties were guilty of driving down the cen- ter of the road, the case has been ap- pealed to the Supreme Court, where Tom Adams will defend Charlie. Though C. B. has been under the competent care of R. N.'s Gladys Carroll, Joanne Dees, and Pat Taylor, Betty Lou Brengle stops by every day as soon as she has finished her third grade class. As we continued down the turnpike, we noticed a striking billboard display- ing a pair of beautiful legs advertising McConaghy Runproof Nylons. Before leaving the turnpike for dear old Milford, we stopped at one of Larry Walton's Esso stations and had Irving Hall adjust our brakes. He told us about Jack Scott's re- cent return from Africa with a rare vari- ety of alligators for his private collec- tion, which is now larger than the reptile house of the Bronx Zoo. When we finally reached Milford and stopped at M.H.S. for a few minutes, we saw general contractor Bob Donovan look- ing over the blueprints for the ultra- modern addition to the high school. Since Jeannie Heath, who works for Mr. Glas- mire, was too busy to give us a guided tour of our old Alma Mater, we wandered up to Mrs. William's room, only to find Randall Christensen, professional year- book advisor for the American Yearbook Company, consoling the 1963 editors of the Milfordian, who were slaving to beat their deadline. We then went out to the new band room, where Billy Daniels was trying to convince the musicians that his new arrangement of Cheer for Old Mil- ford would win the Atomic Music Award at the Harrington Fair. Stepping out of the door of the music room, we were nearly run down by Freddy Ireland and her undefeated hockey Bucettes galloping around the track. Just before we left, Dan'ls told us that our former classmate Jack Baynum, head of the dancing school that had put Arthur Murray out of busi- ness, now holds the world's weight-lifting title. Downtown we noticed G. Thomas Wells' Insurance Corporation. Who would thought that Tom would have competed with his brother's firm? Talking with Dietician M. J. Waters soon satisfied our curiosity about a few of our other class- mates. She mentioned that Jehu Evans is the manager of a large department 38 store and has Donald Davis as his assist- ant manager. Margaret Case has opened a secre- tarial school in Milford which trains its students especially for DuPont's, where Walter Studte has worked his way up to presidency. Wyonna Beebe, Ruth Ann Mills, Estrellita Pearson, and Catherine Clendaniel are among the staff of the new school. Helen Wilgus is still doing welfare work in Skid Row, Chicago. Natalie Swanson recently flew out to see her and was surprised to find Jo Ann E. Powell was her airline hostess. Nat has been designing the costumes for the new ver- sion of Your Show of Shows, starring Delores Lapetina. Members of the cast are Norma Prettyman, Barbara Sheaffer, and Norma Hall. It comes in very well on color TV which was perfected by Walter Berwick, who had the financial assistance of millionaire Robert Edgar. Kathleen Isaacs has recently married the show's producer. Also soon to be seen on television will be Dot Bennett, who has just broken away from Tom Shockley's dance band, the Foxtrotters. Though she received much fame as a vocalist with the band, she now wants her own show. Roberta Crane, whose interior decorating was recently illustrated in House Glamorous, now sings on WJWL on Saturdays. We heard that Lester Hastings, the Blue Denim Baron, who won his title by sing- ing the Nation's favorite hillbilly song, The Tennessee Border, is now con- cerned with WDOV. By the way, we received a letter from Marines Bill Ryder and Ronald Cooper who are now stationed in Korea. Accord- ing to their letter Shirley Carey is run- ning a much needed orphanage there, and nurse Kay Taylor is in charge of the dis- pensary. Etta Mae Wilson has set up a mission school in the same area. Word has come that medical secre- tary Doris Gibson plans to marry her employer, Dr. Quack. The former Misses Joanne Powell, Dawn Davis, Doris Van Vorst, Lorraine Coverdale, Ruth Mit- chell, Helen Hill, Frances Dalfonso, and Mary Passwaters were seen the other night at the elementary P.T.A. meeting. The former Jean O'Day has just given birth to a set of triplets named Davy, Joey, and Kay. We heard that the former Ann Plummer is now residing in Chester, Pennsylvania. Since we saw many of our friends and former classmates and heard of their many interesting escapes throughout the world, we felt our visit to Milford has been quite a success. We attended the graduation exercises of the Class of '63 and it seems incredible that we graduated from dear old M.H.S. in 1953. 39 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR BEST DRESSED T. Wells, N.
