1931 Class Proph cy T XX AS a day rn une exactly hrteen years from the day we graduated from hrgh school rn Nlrlford that Jean Bannrster and I landed rn Nlew York Crty r om Parrs where she had l'een starrrng opposrte Maurrce Chey alrer rn a French moyre She had been chosen for thrs part not only because of her r'uen y rn French acqurred rn hrglr school but because or her wonderful a trng abrlrty She had garned renown and great success rn Hollywood and I felt yery for unate rn being able to contract her tor the moyre wl rch I was drrect mg It may rnterest you that ean contrary to he customary habrt of actresses, had not yet marrred The fact that she was an ac ress wrthout ever havrng been dryorced made her all the m ure outstandrng popular and famous XVe were about to harl a taxr when a 1946 Prerce Arrow whrzzed by us and came rmmedrately to 1 stcp Turnrng around we were overy helmed to behold Leland Eckler seated at the wheel of that luxrrrrous automobrle H had eyrdently made qurte an advancement srnce the days when he was property man of the senror plays at school Wfe soon learned that Leland, who, hy the way seemed to have lost none DoLrttle s Band , the orchestra yyhrch played at the New Yorker Hotel every evenrng Needless to say we rmmedrately decrded on the New Yorker as our stopprng place and Lee yery gracrously consented to motor us there Wfe had lrttle trme to chat wrth hrm after that because he was rn a great hurrv Prcture htm? Remember he always was qurte a lad to be gettrng places That evenrng as we were dancrng to the beat of Lee s drums a tall dark curly headed man approached me smrlrng I stared at hrm, belrevrng that he looked rather ramrlrar but I drdnt recognrze hrm untrl he sard Hello Crrcket dont you know me I knew that rt was Barnard but for a moment I could only stare at hrm He looked so drfferent so pale why hrs freckles were gone' Upon rnqurry I learned that he had been able to pro duce the one and only successful freckle cream Hrs vocatron then was that of managrng a large freckle cream manufacturrng plant whrle hrs avocatron was that of drrectrng a grrls boardrng school along the lrnes whrch he thought best He was strll good lookrng and dashrngly dressed but I mrssed those freckles and longed to see agarn the Homer I knew rn hrgh school bowrng hrs curly head over a math book when the Professor appeared on the scenel Homer rnformed me that he was strll srngle although he had many matrr monral prospects and the usual number of grrls on hrs strrng Barnard seemed to be full of surprrses for he soon told me that whrle he was berng entertarned at the Whrte House he chanced to meet Ella Kretchmer who had the honor of redecoratrng the blue room there She was a yery famous desrgner and was known throughout the country for her won derful abrlrty at rnterror decoratrng How lrttle we dreamed when we vrsrted the Whrte House on our senror trrp frfteen years ago that Homer would be entertarned there and that demure and quret Elly would decorate that room whrch we all admrred The secret of Ella s success lay rn the fact that she took Mrss Grrfhs, rnsprrrng Ec V course m hrgh school Homer also rnformed me that Florence Goodrrch was marrred and lrved 0 ' Ka A , l r - . . , r ,1 . 1th rl e knowledge we had galned, or the urge for do ng tlnngs IH the world euts1de our own httle sphere w hxch ts perhaps best exemphhed by the presxdent of our Sophomore class George Hunt who 1o1ned the United States Nayy to see the world But then our numbers were swelled to some extent by those who declded to llnge another scar Ill IIIIEII' Xlma Mater Thxs year was marked by more dances and a QCIIIOI' Play, m X1l'WlCl'1 we contributed our talents, under the dll'CCI10I1 ol: lVhss Amy Chambers By the end of the year our hearts were torn asunder by the bl1OClilrlg reverat'on that the s bool Aoollo Wfllllam A Hicks was not gomg to he goal wrth us At last we arrued at the hnal ur ose of our four years stru le and p P gg became rand old Semors stxll 1UI9Cl118XOL1b, howexer and obtamed 111 the g prnrltges thereof XX 1th tne obleft of talsrng a trip to XX ashmgton D C an New York City as drd the class of JO x e ttxltd dl ently to ra1se the 9-I game put on sexeral dances and myelgled money ou ot the po kets of the students by dlsplayrng tempt1ng hars of candy Our ma,or undertakmg was the prtsentatlon ol' our Senlor Play The Charm Qchool As a result of these xarlous actxutles we were successf ll ln ra1s1ng enough money to take thls long des1red tr1p Our class had now been reduf d to e Uh rt girls and three boys, all but one of whom accompanlecl us on our tr1p XVe had a splendld vacatlon, seemg new slghts, havmg new expertences, meetlng strange people and being amused at humorous mcldents whlch happened We saw ey erythxng possxble tn the tune alloted us and even extended our stay m New York one dav longer One of our party xery htttngly summed up the feel ings of the whole class m regard tc Waslmxngton and New York when she sa1d Washlngton 15 xnspxrlng, but New Y ork IS evclttng NX e der1ved such beneht and enjoyment that we all were grateful that we lned ln a commumtv w h1ch made such a thlng possxble Vkfe naxe rn our class many of those who haxe been foremost 1n school act1x1t1es Reglna Yale has been leadmg lady 1n the school play for three successful years, Florence Goodrlch has made us an excellent head cheerleader, ably asslsted by others from our class Les hommes of our class, Barnard, Eckler and Harrlson, were all members of the hr t squad ln basket ball and baseball In fact, all of our members haae strnen hard to make our school what lf IS today School days hke every other happy experlence, wnth all its SSSOCIHUOIIS wxth students and teachers, must co1ne to a close, and xt IS with real regret that we reahze that our Alma Mater IS ours for only a few weeks longer Wfe force a sm1le, say we aren t sorry but our hearts are heavy We are cheered, how ever, by the thought tnat we can pass on to our worthv successors, the -Iumors, the thmgs that we have lost T y- H V 7' k .
