Cruising through ’87 Cruising is an unsung hero in the world of the high school student. On any given summer night, many Milford teens can be found cruising “0” in Lincoln. However, as the school year com- mences, thoughts turn back to books, classrooms, and learning. Cruising through the school year can be a time full of trials and tribulations. It is, however, an experience that can be survived suc- cessfully. Students at MHS cruise through a school year with high hopes and spirits airborne, and make it a year worth re- membering. The guest speaker was Allan Beerman, secretary of State. The new members for the 1986-87 school year were seniors: Kaye Bonner, Karen Dill, Shelly Roth; juniors: Michelle Nootz and Dwaine Pekarek; and sophomores: Jodi Erb, Dave Fiala, Brad Goertzen, LeeAnn Grove, Tony Roth, and Tracy Williams. According to NHS president, Gwen Co- vert, the function of National Honor Society is “to honor students who are active in other organizations and who do well academically.” National Honor Society honors twenty- four Milford students in its organization. The National Honor Society is sponsored by Kay Landon and Michael Shimeall. Fourth row: Kari Bennett and Gwen Covert. Student Council This year’s student council had many successful activities, including a very good Homecoming parade. They also hosted the Parent-Teacher conferences and sponsored career luncheons. Topics discussed for possible consider- ation were opening the courtyard for student use and sponsoring more dances. Also con- sidered was a new election procedure which would alter the way in which students are elected to the council. Currently there are four representitives from each class in the junior high and the high school. Representing each class are the president, vice president, and two students elected to the student council. There are also three seniors who are council officers this year, in the president, secretary, and treasur- er offices, and a sophomore in the vice-presi- dent position, bringing the total membership to twenty-eight. i Top: Don and Dana are overwhelmed by the excitement of a council meeting. Members of the staff include: Konnie Helter, Heather Crumley, Terri Eberly, LeAnn Grove, Stacy Nichols, Terri Wendel- in, Julie Rich, Karl Luebbe, Corey Trease, Sheryl Huss, Keith Sorensen, Janelle Daake, Vivian Roth, Michelle Nootz, and Shelly Roth and Becky Hueske, who were the over- all editors. 32 Annual Staff Spanish Club The Spanish Club had a very successful and active year, according to advisor Miss Costello. In the fall, the seniors attended a Spanish ballet at Boy’s Town. The performers, who were directly from Spain, presented the traditional flamenco dance as well as other regional dances. In December, the Spanish I and II students celebrated a Fiesta de Navidad. In preparation for the event, the juniors chose recipes to make authentic Mexican or Spanish foods and the seniors made a pinata. The Foreign Language Fair was held on March 19 at UNL. Milford students received three superiors, one blue, and one green. This summer seven students will travel to Mexico with Miss Cos- tello. They will travel to Mexico City, Toluca, Taxco, and Alcapulco. Top: A typical day in Spanish II. Left: The Mexican look. Above: First row: Sarah Dawson, Heidi Gregg, Jeni Carnes, J.J. Throughout the year the band took place in many marching competitions and concert band contests. Due to inclement weather, conference band was cancelled, but this did not stop the band. Through hard work and determination they went on to re- ceive an Excellent rating at district music contest. The highlight of the year was the Copa, a five-hour evening of complete music, put on in conjunction with the chorus. Those who attended were treated to a fine dinner and outstanding entertainment by groups rang- ing from junior high soloists to Milford’s one and only Polka Band. Special appearances were made by small groups such as the Dixie- land Band and the Misfits. Top left: Larry Fiala is eager to please. Top right: MHS Eagle Band members. Mr. Wesely said that the highlight of the year was having the best window display at the Summer Fun Festival. This display earned the chapter $100. The Chapter also won over 200 ribbons, and 30 trophies and plaques throughout the year. The group was kept quite busy. They participated in approximately 40 activities. These activities included various contests, state and national conventions, and various camps. Officers included the following: Terry Piening, president; Matt Hos- tetler, vice president; Duane Pekarek, secretary; Jered Roth, treasurer; Larry Fiala, reporter; Tom Havlat, sentinel; and Dave Fiala, parliamentarian. FFA 41 F.B.L.A. Ten new members joined the FBLA this year, helping to promote a general awareness among students and the community as to what FBLA is, according to its sponsor, Mrs. Slaby. Activities throughout the year included selling gift items from a catalog for fundrais- ing purposes, listening to guest speakers Mr. Craig Larmon and Mr. Terry Rediger, and the main activity of the year-attending State Leadership Conference. The leadership convention was held on April 2,3,and 4, at the Holiday Inn in Omaha. SLC gives FBLA members a chance to com- pete in various skills and business events. Close-Up Six students accompanied Mrs. Caleca to Washington, D.C., in early April to participate in the Close-Up government studies program. Close-Up is a week-long, intensive, firsthand look at our nation’s government. Students attending were Linn Boesen, Kaye Bonner, Troy Eberspacher, Theresa Kremer, Chad Peters, and Andy Seeley. Students were introduced to representa- tives from all branches of the government and to prominent members of the media. Students also attended Congressional committee hear- ings, sessions of Congress, and seminars on cur- rent issues. In order to defray the expenses of travel- ing to Washington, participating students ran concessions, sold Valentino’s gift certificates, and held a spaghetti feed. Students attending the Close-Up program found it a very valuable experience in which they were able to meet students from all over with a common interest in government. There was also a change this year for the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders only attended one clinic this year. The clinic at Lincoln High School mainly con- sisted of learning dance routines and getting some new ideas for routines. The cheerleaders had two fund raisers: a dance and a funnel cake stand at the Fun Festival. The cheerleaders also have many responsibili- ties. They are there to promote spirit in school and to support the athletic clubs and coaches. They also make posters and buttons. This year was original because there were a lot of underclassmen on the squad, bringing in new ideas. There was also a change this year that al- lowed the cheerleaders to letter. The cheerleaders felt that this was a good idea because they were honored for the things they did. Top Right: Jenni and Tammy show their spirit at a basketball game. They began the year by purchas- ing a new incline bench and squat rack for the weight room with M-Club funds. They also hosted two athletic events: a seventh and eighth grade boys’ and girls’ tour- nament and a senior high track meet. A new item on the list was donating money to the Michelle Boss fund. Finally, the group sponsored the juice ma- chine in the cafeteria throughout the year. The M-Club, which consists of all high school letter winners, voted the following into office: Dana Sperling, President; Troy Eber- spacher, Vice President; Matt Hostetler, Sec- retary Treasure; Linn Boesen, President; Sheryl Huss, Vice President; J. I People 49 Varsity Football For the third straight year the varsity football team quilified for the state playoffs. Playing with a large number of under- classman, the Eagles posted an 8-3 record. “I was proud that a team composed of so many underclassman players tied to- gether,” said Coach Hingst. Underclassmen who made all confer- ence were: Offense-sophmore Matt Hos- tetler, honorable mention; Defense-juniors Brian Daake, Brad Gibson, Brent Bargen and Tony Nespor; and Doug Stutzman, honorable mention. Although the underclassmen provided the team with a good nucleus, it was the seniors who provided the leadership. Four of the five seniors on the squad were named to the all conference team. They were Tim Kremer, Chad Peters, Dana Sperling, and Bill Welsh. Tim Kremer and Chad Peters try to stop a David City play. 52 Varsity Football What now, coach? Football The freshmen football team had a very promising season, posting a perfect 2-0 record. The JV team, however, didn’t fare as well ending the season 1-3. According to Coach Fitchner, the strength of the freshmen team was the defense. The defense, which was lead by O.J. Utter, Brian Nicklas, and Larry Hu- dacek, allowed their opponents only 50 yards rushing a game. According to Coach Muller, “the ju- nior varsity team improved throughout the season.” Playing with a young team with little J.V. experience, the team had a lot to learn. Overall, both teams had good sea- sons, using it as a learning experience. J.V. football players take time before practice to discuss the plan of action. Football Cross Country For the first year of having a cross country team, Coach Wergin said it was a learning experience in which five boys and one girl showed good promise as all improved at every meet. Cross country is a different sport than distance in track. The participants must run up and down steep hills and avoid holes and trees, while running through mud and water for three and one tenth miles for the boys and two and one half miles for the girls. In order for Milford to have a team, John Conrad had to go to the August board meeting and persuade the board members to allow the school to start the program. The participants went out with an intent to win and were often successful. John Conrad placed at every meet and qualified for state with fourth place at Districts to go on and get sixth at State. LeeAnn Grove placed at half of the meets and placed ninth at districts, missing state by three places. Coach Wergin hopes for a better team next year for the boys, and a full team of five for the girls. Above left: Back row: LeeAnn Grove and Tony Roth. Cross Country 55 Varsity Volleyball The Varsity Volleyball team had a dif- ferent look this year, using the 4-2 offense for the season. According to Coach Kostek, “The skill level of the team increased and they be- came much more comfortable with the new International 4-2 offense that we installed as the season progressed.” The new offense, which allows the team to cover the court more quickly, led the team to an 8-11 record for the season. This record attained the goal of improving the record set last year. Linn Boesen and Laura Cooper re- ceived individual awards throughout the season. Kari goes in for Linn as she takes a breather. Volleyball For the first time ever, the J.V. volley- ball team completed the season with a win- ning record of 6-5. According to Coach Ells, “the season was a good one because of the skill develop- ment and improved court coverage.” The team showed high percentages in the skills, serving 84 percent, setting 85 percent, and passing with 84 percent. Attitudinial changes were made during the season in an attempt to improve previous records. “I feel the players are beginning to un- derstand ‘competitive’ athletics more fully,” states Coach Ells. Coach Ells said that the 1987 season appears to offer new challenges. The return- ing players and upcoming sophomores seem ready to meet these challenges. Junior High Volleyball Twelve girls made up the seventh grade volleyball team with eleven girls making up the eighth grade volleyball team this year. According to Coach Golka, even though they’re not the best yet, the girls are being trained with skills for later use in volleyball. She said that learning how to pass, set, and hit are big essentials in the process of playing vol- leyball. With the experience in these skills, the seventh and eighth grade girls will become bet- ter offensive players in future years. Coach Wergin said, “Inex- perience in the beginning of the season plus a tough schedule” led to the slow start. Boys Basketball The JV boys basketball team finished their year 4-11. According to Coach Muller, the boys did real well defensively, but did have a difficult year scoring points. Mr. Muller said the team, consisting of freshmen and sophomores, improved both, individually and as a team. He said all nine players received a lot of playing time Leading scorer for the JV’s was 0. J. Utter. O. J. Utter and Brad Goertzen led the team in rebounds, and Matt Hostetler was the leader in assists. The eighth grade team highlighted their season with a 35-24 victory over Tri-County and a well-played game against Centennial, with a loss of 27-25. The seventh grade team ended the year with a 1-4 record. According to Coach Scheu- ler, the team had a great deal of personal and team improvement. “I would give a rating of about aB+ on the entire season,” said Coach Scheuler. 9th Boys Basketball, Front row: J. Coach Brettmann said the lack of consistancy led to an unbalanced season of ups and downs. How- ever, this lack of consistancy allowed the younger players on the team to gain experience. According to Brettmann, the outstanding game of the year was against Henderson. The team was ahead most of the first half with good intensity. The second half was a little more relaxed and allowed Henderson to catch up and send the game into over- time, resulting in a one-point loss. Above: Tracy and Sheryl attempt a block. According to Coach Fisher, the overtime loss to previously unbeaten Sutton and the vic- tory over Tri-County were the highlights of the season. Coach Fisher thought that the leadership of the underclassmen and reliable freshmen strengthened the team. On the other hand, the team was hurt by poor shooting percentages and limited group practice. “Prospects are very good for next year’s team,” stated Coach Fisher. “This years eighth and ninth graders will be the nucleus of the team because they have had very successful seasons.” Upper Left: Coach Brettmann advises Janelle while the bench listens intently. The seventh grade girls ended their season with a 3-2 record. “The girls learned to work hard on de- fense and learned several offensive plays,” said Coach Brown. She also said that their ball handling skills and team play steadily improved throughout the season. According to Coach Brown, the girls will make a fine eighth grade team next year. As seventh graders, this year’s eighth graders had a 5-0 record. This year they continued with an- other great season and ended with a 5-1 record. Their only loss was to Class B Seward by a margin of six points. The eighth graders compiled a 10-1 record to end their Jr. High careers. Coach Huss said, “The girls had a fine season.” Huss also said that this group of girls shows some real promise for their future high school careers. Jenny Pelley led all scorers with an average of 10 points. Jr, High Girls Basketball 67 Varsity Wrestling This year’s wrestling team was made up of a group of talented individuals. Coach Fehrs commented, “It was hard to set any team goals while we were still trying to get to know each other, but later in the season many individuals set their own goals for plac- ing in districts and state.” Many of these goals were realized as the team won the North Bend Invite and took fourth at Districts. Qualifying for the state tourney were Bill Welsh, Dave Fiala, Tom Havlat, Brad Gibson, and Terry Morrow. Placing were Havlat, third, Gibson, fourth, and Morrow, fifth. “It was a good year both for myself and the team,” said Fehrs. “It will provide and excellent base for next year.” Top: Johnny Pekarek works with his opponent at dis- tricts. Jr. High Wrestling According to Coach Shimeall, the 1986 junior high wrestling team can best be de- scribed as inexperienced, with nine of the ten members of the team being first-year wrestlers. Junior high wrestling is a totally indi- vidual sport with no team scores taken. The junior high season consisited of three tournaments and four duals. Individual tournament medal winners were: Jason Schweitzer (three fourth pla- cings), Jason Kahler (one third place), Greg Dunlap (one fourth place), Brent Roth (one second place, one fourth place) and Heath Yeackley (one second place). Outstanding individual records included: Heath Yeackley (7-5), Jason Kahler (7-6), Jason Schweitzer (8-9), and Brent Roth (7- 8). Other members of the junior high wrestling team were Danny Stauffer, Todd Hansen, Tarrence Vernon, Ron Woita, and Eric Bontrager. Down for the count. Coach Shimeall shows his stuff. Although the team did not reach their goal of winning a trophy at a tournament, they had a good season. The team ended the year strong. The team’s best finish was at districts, where they placed eighth out of 14 teams, seven strokes out of fourth place. The best score, a 358, was shot at conference. Individually, they fared well also. Mike Minchow earned fifth at SNC and Palmyra, and seventh at districts, which qualified him for state. Matt Hostetler also placed at Pal- myra, finishing thirteenth. Mr. Wergen said that he hopes the team can be more consistent next year. Top left: Dana watches his ball as it heads down the fairway. According to Coach Hingst, the team was the best boys’ team in seven years. He said the team’s strengths were the weights, sprints, distance races, and the long and triple jumps. Qualifying for state were: John Con- rad, Tim Kremer, and Greg Backes. None of them, however, placed at the state meet. The team was led at state by the 400 meter relay, which placed second in the time of 51.67. Members of the medal- winning relay include Kristy Lawton, Beth Barker, Jodi Erb, and Shelly Roth. Beth and Jodi also qualified individually in the sprints. Beth qualified in the 100 meter dash, while Jodi qualified in the 200. Back Row: Nathan Wenger, Heath Lewis, Brian Witham, Heath Yeackley, Ryan Dugdale, Bert Luebbe, and Jason Turner. The Junior High Track team con- sisted of 12 seventh and eighth grade boys, led by Coaches Huss and Hof- mann. According to Coach Huss, the boys performed up to their potential. “For the small number of boys out, we have done fairly well.” The track team participated in five meets, placing seventh at David City, second at the Centennial Triangular, eighth at the Centennial Invite, and tenth at Conference. Jeff Stahly, Heath Lewis, and Andy Morrison led the way to a better season. Improvements were seen in all areas in- cluding the pole vault, triple jump, and the 400 meter relay. The Junior High Girls’ track team went up against 43 teams this year and came away defeating all of them except for three. “The girls had a super attitude and really worked hard,” said Coach Fichtner. He also said that the girls set a goal of trying to improve each individual effort every meet, which most did accomplish. The team finished first at the David City In- vite, the Milford Triangular, and the Centennial Invite. They also placed fourth at the Southern Ne- braska Conference. “It will be very difficult to top a year like the one we had this year, but if the girls continue to work hard and keep their attitude up, I am sure we can keep improving.” Scoreboard VARSITY FOOTBALL MHS OPPONENT 14 TECUMSEH 6 16 GENEVA (OT) 19 7 HEBRON 6 25 WYMORE 8 17 LOUISVILLE 6 48 WILBER 0 13 TRI-COUNTY 7 6 CENTENNIAL 12 63 EAST BUTLER 8 STATE PLAYOFFS 33 LOUISVILLE 7 0 DAVID CITY 24 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL MHS OPPONENT 1 CENTENNIAL 2 0 GENEVA 2 2 NEB. The royality, which in the past was introduced at the game, was revealed at the parade and once again at the game. This change was made to give the royalty more time to be noticed, ac- cording to Mrs. Slaby, Homecoming sponsor. Katha Rediger and Bill Welsh were crowned royalty at the festivities. According to Mrs. Slaby, announcing the royalty at the parade worked out well, even though there was student disapproval. As it turned out, the microphone wasn’t working at the game because of the weather. The afternoon parade featured the crowning of royalty, the senior car, both Ju- nior and Senior High bands, elementary stu- dents, and a pep rally. The day was made complete with the Eagles defeating Wilber 48-0. Homecoming week was topped off by spirit week, in which the students dressed up for “Around the World,” “Career,” “Geek,” “Lifestyles of the Rich and Fa- mous,” and “Purple and White” days. There was a lot more spirit and involve- ment this year than in the past, said Mrs. Slaby. King Bill Welch and Queen Katha Rediger were crowned at the Homecoming pa- rade. Clockwise from top left. Vale- dictorian for the class was Linn Boesen, and salu- tatorian was Kari Bennett. The Class of 1987, sponsored by Mrs. Lan- don and Mr. Shimeall, selected as its colors pur- ple and white. Its class flower was the white rose with a purple tip, and its class motto was: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Mr. Hall presented the class and Robert Bontrager, vice president of the Board of Educa- tion, awarded the diplomas. Music was provided by the high school band. 90 Graduation Top left: Senior girls exchange hugs and well wishes. Top right: Mike receives congratulations as he gets his diploma. Numbers soon appear on chalkboards, preceded by the words, “Senior Countdown”. Thus the year ends, leaving in its wake memories of both downfalls and accomplishments. The cycle will begin again in the fall, but until then, the Eagles cruise on ...
