AIRBORNE ’86 Contents Classes Organizations 6 Sports 28 Special events 48 80 Flying into As the '85-86 school year took off, excitement was found everywhere, in the anticipation of the upcoming athletic seasons (volleyball, football, basketball, wres- tling, track and golf) and the dreams of state. The joy of seeing old friends and the hopes of making new friends was seen all around. Classes quickly resumed the task of doing homework and learning new things. Members of band, chorus, Spanish, drama and speech anxiously waited to show what they could do. One can now soar through the coming pages and watch the year unfold. 2 3 People Clockwise from above: Heather and Marci sport vogue attire for Homecom- ing; Bill and Mike show what happens when they get their closets mixed up; The Lost Flight cast after a successful performance. Council has busy year This was another active and successful year for Milford High's student council. Activities included a Christmas dance and a computer matching service in time for Valentine's Day. Students were given questionaires which were analyzed by a computer. Several weeks later, students could buy a list of perfect matches as selected by the computer. One of the year's most exciting accomplishments by the student council was the lifting of the school's rule that banned students' wearing shorts to class. After discussing the rule with the school board, the council reported that students would be allowed to wear nice shorts to school-a welcome change, considering Nebraska's hot weather in late August! Other activities during the school year included members attending the annual Student Council Workshop in Geneva. The student council is sponsored by Amy Cederdahl and Chuck Wergin. This year's annual staff was in a class of its own—a journalism class, that is. The class met for one period a day, every other week, instead of nights and weekends. Our main objective was to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality, said Mrs. Kessler, sponsor. The class undertook various activities to raise money for the book, such as selling candy canes at Christmas and selling patron ads. The staff was aided by Media Specialist Kay London, whose expertise was definitely needed when the staff began using a computer typesetting program provided by the yearbook publisher. Another first for the staff was the selection of Airborne as the new name for the annual. Standing: editor Laura Grove, publicity person Johanna Knes: photography editor Tim Meehan. Under the direction of Mr. Shimeall and Brian Bennett, the law team took their case to court in October. The case dealt with sex discrimination. Milford lost the case in close judging at the Seward County Courthouse. The case was heard by Judge Bryce Bartu. Close Up This year Milford's Close Up participants took place in a letter-writing project centering on alerting congressmen to the concerns of local citizens. The group took part in a week-long government studies program in Washington, D.C. along with sponsor Kay London. Seminars offered involved workshops, study tours and meetings with Washington offi- cials. Close Up participants: front row: Candy Rediger, Kelli Rose. It helped students to gain self confidence, and helped them learn gestures. The team attended conferences at Tri- County and districts at Geneva. The Oral Interp Conference received a division two, and the Oral Interpretation Disticts came in third. The teams were pleased overall for the year. Above: Conference Oral Interp: back: Chris Brhel. The club members prepared displays, video tapes and other projects dealing with topics like child development and nutrition for the SEARCH contest. As well as meeting regularly through- out the school year, members cooperated with the Home Economics Department to help host a spring fashion extravaganza. FHA is sponsored by Cheryl Meyer. There were no seniors on the squad and only three cheerleaders returned from the previous year. Tina Snover, a wrestling football cheerleader, moved back to her hometown in December. Then pep rallies were stopped because of low student attendance. But the cheerleaders worked hard and managed to have a fun year together anyway. In June of 1985, the cheerleaders attended a camp at Doane College, where they won several ribbons. They also did several fundraisers, including a car wash, an egg walk, a booth at the Milford Fun Festival, and a dance at the start of the school year. Although they competed in just one marching contest, they brought home the Hastings Melody RoundUp 1st place Class C trophy. To add to their marching season, the band performed at all home football games and also at the UNL Homecoming Parade. Later in the year the band was invited back to play at the Husker Invite Track Meet. SNC was held at Wymore Southern and districts at Tri-County. The band did a stupendous job playing “Overture in B-flat and “Hosts of Freedom and brought home straight superiors. “I think we had an overall outstanding year, said Director Brian Anderson, who is in his last year at Milford. “The past three years we have proved that the Milford band has the talent, ability, and drive to be one of the best bands around. We've made other bands realize that we're something to be reckoned with. Over the past three years, we have brought home two district superiors, one district excellent, four marching superiors, two marching trophies, an excellent at a national contest, and numerous superiors from soloists and small groups at districts. Outstanding is one of many words that could be used to describe this year's junior high band. The talented group did a number of things during the year, including mar- ching at a football game, playing at varsity volleyball and basketball games, many concerts, and the annual contest. With nearly two dozen students taking place in the small groups and solos at contest, the band accomplished a lot. Also per- forming as a branch of the junior high band was the jazz band, who were a very able group of musicians. Top: Mr. Anderson leads the band at the spring concert. Many things happened to the girls' volleyball team this year, including some emotional trials and some physical highs. After the loss of Coach Golka, the team had an eight-game losing streak. But these athletes were not losers. They picked up the season and beat Centennial (C-1 State Champions) in the Conference tourna- ment. The Eagles were led by a fine team-oriented class of seniors. Johanna Kness was superb in her role as team captain and setter. She earned team honors in the Techumseh and Conference tournaments. She was also named to the Honor- able Mention All- State Team. Several other senoirs played key roles. Marla Dreeszen was the team's leading passer and key communicator. Lorna Hoggins was the team's leading substitute player who played every game and was called on to play many different roles. The team was also helped by five juniors and three sophomores. Katha. Skill development was the goal of this year's junior varsity volleyball team. All season the girls kept improving and despite a difficult schedule and only two matches won, the girls stuck with it. Throughout the season the girls worked on improved strategy and team play, with improved strategy the asset next year's team will depend on. At the end of the season the team had a dinner party at Mrs. Kostek's house. The team was coached by Mrs. Kostek and Mrs. Ells. 52 Frosh volleybaH succeeds First row: T. Williams. S. Nichols, J. The girls came through with flying colors, and should come in very handy in future JV and varsity teams. Above photos: Members of the frosh volleyball team showing their stuff on the court. Varsity Football The 1985 football team picked up where the '84 team left off. A big win over Tri- County in the playoffs was a season high point after losing to Tri-County in the regular football season. When Milford met the Trojans in the Tri-County the first time they were both undefeated. The Trojans took advantage of Milford's mistakes to win the game. After that heart breaker the shaken Eagles lost a close one to Centennial. After that a team meet- ing helped the Eagles regroup. Having a perfect season was more of a goal for the players than I ever realized , Hingst said. After working it out on the board they realized we could still make the play- offs. In the next game the Eagles racked up 63 points against East Butler to get back on track. After that it was back to Tri-County for a game of revenge. This time the odds were in the Eagles' favor. Two days later the Eagles hosted Wahoo Neuman in their second state playoff game. A heart-breaking 30 to 20 loss for the Eagles ended their season at 8-3. It was a successful season for both the freshman and junior varsity Eagle football teams. The junior varsity Eagles ended their season with four wins and two losses. The Eagles allowed no scor- ing during the first quarter by any of their opponents and kept second quarter scoring to a mere six points. The freshman Eagles had a perfect season with two wins and no losses. It should be a great year for Eagle football when these fine young athletes are ready for var- sity play. Janelle Daake. Coach Man- nix. Although the Eagles finished with a season record of six wins and 15 losses, they saw great improvement in their man-to-man defense, said Coach Brettman. Brettman added that although the girls played good defense most of the time, their inability to score hurt the team in the majority of their games, it seemed that we were playing our best basketball during the conference tour- nament when we beat Centennial who earlier had beaten us by 28. That same week we were hit by the flu and didn't quite recover before the end of the season, Coach Brettman said. 59 Above: Lisa and a Seward player jump for the ball. The Junior Varsity ended their season with a 2-9 record. In the beginning it went really well, but then came the flu epedemic and a lot of starters were out because of it. There were many areas where improvement was found including shooting, rebounding, and team effort. Michelle Nootz and Karen Dill aided the team with their offensive and defensive abilities. I think that this team learned a lot of new skills and abilities that will be helpful for next year. Tearn effort was a big factor but they learned it late in the season, said Coach Mannix. 60 Frosh play few square The freshman girls' basketball team had an outstanding season. They finished with a record of 6-3. Their biggest accomplishments came in the tournaments. They were second in the Wilber Tourna- ment being upset by Wilber. At the Tri-County tournament, they de- feated Wymore Southern to bring home the first place trophey. Improvements were seen in all areas including shooting, reboun- ding, and team unity. The season was up and down at first, but ended up well after they had a chance to practice together. It was a team effort and I think everyone did well,” said Coach Frey. Winning the conference tournament and having a six- game winning streak were the highlights of the season for the 1985-86 boys' basketball team, said Coach Chuck Wergin. Another high point in the season was the victories over three teams at conference who later went on to the state tournament, Wergin said. Although the season record was 11-10. Wergin had good things to say about the season. We played a tough schedule, and all but two of our 10 losses were close, Wergin said. Honored senior players: Kirk Kremer, All-Conference 1st Team and Southern Nebraska All-Star Team; Rick Dugdale and Troy Martin, All-Conference 2nd Team; Milt Ferris, All-Confer- ence Honorable Mention, and Rick Dugdale, Southern Nebras- ka All-Star Team. Wergin said that the seniors—Kirk, Jay, Rick, Troy, and Milt—will be missed next year. 62 Right: Jay shoots from the side. JV boys ’ basketball Front row: Vance Stauffer. John Conrad, Myron Thomas. The Milford boys' junior varsity basketball team finished a very successful season with a record of nine wins and three losses. Much of the team's success was due to switching defenses and their fast-breaking offense. The Eagles started out the season winning four of their five games before Christmas, and winning the last three games in which they averaged 64 points on offense and held their opponents to less than 40 points each. The biggest win of the season was 53-42 against David City. The Eagles were led on offense by Doug Stutzman, Vance Stauffer and Brent Bargen. The leading reboun- ders were Sean Clark and Chad Peters, and both enabled the Eagles to win every jump ball for the season. Tim Kremer had a very good year on defense, usually covering the opponent's best player. 64 Frosh boys ’ basketball Front row: Coach Fichtner, Kurt Sor- ensen, Brad Goertzen, Jett Neihardt. Back row: Greg Backes, Tony Roth. Derek Blaser The season started slowly for the freshman boys' basketball team. Offense consistency problems made it difficult to score, but a win in an outstanding game against Wilbur at the Tri County Tournament gave the Eagles a 47-25 victory and a 3rd place trophy. Tony Roth led the team in scoring with a 9.0 point per game average. Matt Hostetler was next with a 7.0 per game average. Brad Goertzen led the team in reboun- ding with 53. Greg Backes was next with 52 rebounds. Jeff Neihardt led the team in free throws as he shot 100 percent from the free-throw line. As the season progressed we kept improving. The last three games were the best games we had all season. As a team we didn't have a very good record, but there were a lot of individuals who showed great improvement from the beginning of the season to the end of the season, Coach Fichtner said. 65 Wrestlers take chalenge Bottom: Lorry Fiala, Don Smith, Tom Howard. The team consisted of new, young wrestlers with fantastic endurance. Considering the young team, I feel we pulled through quiet well, said head coach Mike Shimeall. The team placed eighth in the overall standings at their Conference meet. Furthermore, the team placed ninth at Districts. Individual scorers included Bill Welsh, 2nd, Brian Wehrs, 3rd, and Jim Fiala, 4th. Brian Wehrs continued on to the State Wrestling Tourna- ments and placed 4th. Above left: Jim Fiala. Girls Varsity has The Milford High girls track team had an outstanding season. They finished first at all but the Centennial Invite where they finished third. The Indoor meets were tough. They got hurt by this, but it was a great chance for them to gain vital experi- ence. said Coach Brettmann. They finished second at Conference behind Hebron. This meet was really tough and I thought the girls did very well. said Coach Brettmann. In the District meet, they finished fourth. Five people qualified for State. They were Johanna Kness in the shot and discus, the 400 meter relay team consisting of Kristy Lawton, Lorna Hoggins, Shelly Roth, and Michelle Nootz. They set 24 individual bests at the District track meet. Besides personal bests, the guys also set four new records. Tom Dawson set a new record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.65. The 400-meter relay team consisting of Tim Kremer, Sean Clark, Chris Lorenz, and Kirk Kremer set a record with a time of 45.2. The Freshman 400-meter relay team set a new record with a time of 5147. The team is made up of Chris Lorenz, Don Smith, Greg Backes, and Dave Fiala. John Conrad set a new record in the 3200 with a time of 10:26.0. “I think this group of guys had a feeling of team unity. Golfer Dave Heckman qualified for state by finishing seventh at districts and the team placed second at the Wymore Invitational. Wergin said that the outstanding players for the season were Glenn Richards, Dave Heckman and Mike Minchow. Richards, a three-year letterman, earned two medals. Heckman, a three-year letterman, won two medals in addition to qualifying for state. Minchow, a two-year letterman, won three medals. Qualifying an individual for state was the highlight of the season, said Wergin. He said that it was only the second time in the school's history that someone has gone to state in golf. This year's junior high team did not finish the season with a winning record, but they learned a lot about team spirit and sportsmanship in the process. Coach Dee Kremer had this to offer: “We had some great players on both teams. Once these girls have a few more seasons of experience, they're going to be trouble for their opponents. Give them the know-how and they'll rule... Watch out, class CM! Leslie Boesen goes down for a spike refurn. 73 Junior High on the right track The seventh grade boys ended their season with a record of 1-4. The season started and ended well, but the games in between were discouraging. Jeff Stah- ley and Reg Leichty were the outstand- ing players, but everyone contributed his skills. Bench play, led by Mark Knolmayer, was especially strong in the last few games. This group of seventh graders improved not only their personal skills, but learned to cooperate as a team. This will help them greatly in their future years of basketball, said Coach Brian Anderson. The eighth grade boys finished their season with a 6-1 record. The boys had a very good season. They improved their shooting and defensive skills. O.J. Utter, Mike Roth, and Doug Meyers, leading scorers and rebounders, aided the team greatly. The highlight of the season came when Milford defeated Centennial to take first place in the M-Club Tourna- ment. Considering that Centennial beat us by 16 points just two weeks before the tournament, the overall turnout was a great success, said Coach Huss. The seventh grade girls had an undefeated season of 7-0. Improvement was made in all areas, especially in passing, shooting, and ball handling. The team was aided by outstanding players Jenny Pelley, Shawna Holloway, Michelle Nespor, and Mikki Johnson. I feel the season went very well. Everyone prac- ticed hard which resulted in a good performance in the games. The start of the season was a question mark, but all the girls improved greatly, said Coach Scheuler. The eighth grade girls finished their season with a 5-2 record. Their skills improved greatly from last year's 2-3 season. They shot, rebounded, and han- dled the ball better, said Coach Huss. Jenny Smith and Melissa Thomas were great aids to the shooting and reboun- ding statistics. The team got third place in the M-Club Tournament. Their two loses were against Seward and Centennial. The junior high girls' track team's biggest accomplishment was finishing 4th overall in what basically was a Class B track meet, said Coach Tim Fichtner. At the Raymond Central In- vite we had 17 events in which individuals had season bests. This shows the girls worked hard throughout the year, Fichtner said. We were a very young team, Fichtner said. The people doing the scoring for us were basically first-year tracksters. I look for a lot of improvement next season. This group of girls seemed to be very closely knit. They worked hard throughout the sea- son and were very competitive. Fichtner said the outstanding tracksters were Jennifer Fischer, Michelle Bennett and Jenny Pelly. Instead of performing a play, the drama department decided to preform four one-acts. They were Lost Flight, Plaza Suite, Silent Snow Secret Snow, and Mr. Winkler's Birthday Party. This year the plays were presented in a different atmosphere. This time Mrs. Harlander, Miss Meyer, and the ad- vanced foods class prepared the des- sert. The drama students sold the tickets for the event. The night of the Dessert Theater, the drama students were in make-up and costumes and the audience were seated at candle-lit tables.
