I can hardly wait — you never know what to expect next. Remembering last year, I wonder if I can get through another one. Of course, there will be a few minor changes like some new faces and some old faces gone. One thing that always remains the same is the realization that we have to look into the future and prepare ourselves to make it what we want it to be. Our year is out there waiting for us to take it on head to head. If we stumble or even if we fall, there is always someone from our Milford High Team to guide us toward making everything the best it can possibly be. Let's turn the page and take a look into 1984-85! |l l u l l u l±=,v lJ lj L=i u lzd U l L lJ Lzzi y U ©[PLitPK lPLitPKDtPtLitPKDtPLi IPIOIPLKP ilPi@IPLi[PI®[p[L[IIP ©[PtLd IO ILi dtPKDtPLtlPIOCPlLI ©IPLItPiOtPlLi I® [ilPiOlpyitPlIO LilP r n r n n=i rr n r r it= rpjj OPtLIIlPt IPKSPLIG S)[PLI[PI®D [=?|q) ff fq)ri l lq)B(f fDn fUfDf: §)[p[LIIP[I@0 I®[PL[1C imm t PVi UmUzDir UzdV LT U=iU=iir U=.V LT I±hU=iU LS rr n r n n= r n r r n= r n n= fr= n n r imns j (Q)|uu|(pj|ifiJKO)iinj|(pj; •; cq? pnj] pni] (q) [ini] pmi (pj) pni] CQt) pr ]©@ S ]Qm] DQi J n g| (S OO 0(0) [5} Q qro DO 3f5L,i= i) [inJ](5) n.—n(c (eL =Q DOLQ =Q Qru] t=0 [M] DELQ =0 OQS =0 QOH r iLi (§)=, ( !=i (0) =. Resource 25 Eagles turn it around The little guys from Milford ignite “Coming out of nowhere, no one expected us to be a team of greatness, said Coach Hingst. Football brought back the school spirit we were searching for. An entire community pulling for the Eagles down after down, Milford did not want to let up on its part of the bargain. If we were close in the fourth quarter, we were ahead, Hingst said. Tabbed the little guys from Milford by the Lincoln Star, the team had finally done what every team wants to do — they went to State. By overcoming a powerful Wilber team, the Eagles were on their way. The Wilber game was the one we wanted the most, for revenge, said Hingst, and later came a stubborn Tri-County team, but we made our own breaks to win. Finally the Eagles qualified for State by beating highly regarded Centennial. Defen- sively, we played very well. It was three downs and out, Hingst said. That defense projected the Eagles up to fourth place in the Associated Press Class C-1 high school ratings before the East Butler game. Milford finished ninth after post-season play — quite an accomplishment for a team that came out of nowhere. Just getting to State was the biggest highlight of our year, Hingst said. 28 Opposite Page: Assistant Coach Larry Fichtner, Head Coach Marty Hingst and Assistant Coach Glenn Pasho applaud an Eagle effort. JV Eagles struggle The Milford JV football team finished the 1984 season with a 1-3 record, despite outrushing their opponents by 200 yards and having over 100 more yards total offense. Their offensive downfall was turnovers and the inability to pass in key situations. The offense was led by running back Bill Welsh, who rushed for 95 yards per game and scored 38 points for the season. The defense played well again this season, keeping Milford very close in every game, and allowing the offense to stay on the field. Milford was led on defense by Daryl Sorensen, who had 45 tackles and 2 knockdown passes, and Bill Welsh, who had 41 tackles and 4 fumble recoveries. 31 Varsity and JV Volleyball: Front Row: T. Milford's competi- tion was tough, and the team took on the challenge. All of the players developed very well fundamentally, both as individuals and as team members. We have some great players coming up in the ranks and we know the senior players will go on to accomplish great tasks, comment- ed Golka. The fans supported the team through good times and bad. The players showed great courage and stamina throughout the season despite the disappointment of the 5-12 record. One of the high points of the season was a strong comeback against Wilber which lead to the defeat of the Wolverines at the district tournament. 32 Fellow teammates await the outcome of Michelle's spike. They gained a lot of experience and progres- sed as the year went along. Mrs. Kostek was especially pleased with the girls' skill development and their ability to set the ball up for the spike. However, she feels they need to advance in mental and physical toughness. If the team keeps up their consistency and attitude, they will certainly experience much success. J. J. The Eagles had many key wins such as defeating rated Class C-2 schools Dorchester and Scribner, both of which made it to the State Tournament. Milford upset higher regarded Class B Superior and a tough Class C-1 opponent Sutton. The players did an excellent job of playing defense. We held our opponents to a 43 point per game average Wergin said. The Eagles relied on four returning seniors to lead the way to becoming the runner-up in the SNC Tournament and the North Bend Holiday Tournament. Milford was also the SNC East regular season champions. Coming back for the Eagles was Craig Shaw who earned State Class C-1 second team honors. Craig led the Eagles in scoring for the year. Losing returning starter Troy Martin for the year due to a football injury really hurt. But Kevin Dill played well in filling in said Coach Wergin. Finishing with a win-loss record of 16-6, most people would agree with Coach Wergin that it was a good year. The 1984-85 season closed out a career of one of the best basketball players ever to play at Milford High School, Craig Shaw. A starter for four years on the Eagle Varsity, Craig has developed the skills and ability to be recruited and play college basketball. In the future Craig would like to coach. The Milford JV basketball team finished their season very strong, win- ning six of their last seven games, to cap a very successful season of eight wins and five losses. The keys to their suc- cesses was their ability to switch de- fenses and their good shooting per- centage of 43% as a team. Juniors Jay Stoa, Daryl Sorensen and Milt Ferris did an excellent job of leading the team and keeping the team competitive. Chad Peters was the lead- ing rebounder. Lady Eagles The varsity girls' basketball team had a frustrating 1984-85 season. The season started off well with a win over Dorchester, but for the next eleven games the season did not go as well until a 55-51 win over Tri-County. This year's team had an exceptional amount of talent which was unable to shine through with a schedule that included rated teams like Centennial, Seward and Wilbur. Two Eagle players, Mi- chelle Nobbman and Beth Saltzman, received conference honors at the season's end. Michelle made All-State Honorable Mention. Beth was chosen for Second Team All-Conference. Nine girls lettered this season. Six of those nine will return next year, and three of the six will be starters. They showed off this potential with their first win against Dorchester. From there until the fourth game, the team remained on an upswing. But after, their upswing came down. The JV's worked very hard together and always attempted to work together during the games. From all the experience at- tained this year, it is hoped that we will have a strong base for JV's next year and more movement of some of the players up to the Varsity level. This year's Freshman team didn't have a winning record either, how- ever, it was their first year to play together. Eagles see Improvement Great improvements in almost all aspects of our track team was how Head Boys Track Coach Marty Hingst summed up the 1985 season. Hingst attributed the team's improvement to the pace-setting seniors, who led the team through hard work that paid off at each meet. After each meet, the stat sheets showed that almost everyone improved, Hingst said. I guess the track team had a feeling of 'togetherness.' We have a lot of potential coming back next year, Hingst said. I think we can do just as well or even better. The Eagles' assistant coach was Tony Muller. Front Row: C. Mattox, H. Crumley, K. Coached by Matt Brickell, the 7th graders had an exciting season. It was a year of learning, Brickell said. The girls really developed great skills that will boost their efforts next year. The 8th graders, coached by Mary Ells, worked on the basic skills and strategies. The hard work paid off with a 6-0 record. All players competed and contribut- ed in each match, Ells said. The members worked hard all year to earn their superior and excellent ratings. Band director Brian Anderson said, I think this year was possibly the best year yet for the band program at MHS. The kids really worked hard. The band earned ratings which included straight superiors at Nebraska marching and concert contests and an excellent rating at Worlds of Fun. All band members worked in fund-raising projects including several paper drives and a dance to raise money to enable them to attend the Festival of Bands at Worlds of Fun on April 13 and 14. There they performed and were judged by international judges and then played around in the amusement park. On April 14 the band had free time to do as they wished at the park before returning to Milford. The fund- raising monies paid for the chartered buses and for the motel rooms the band stayed in. If this year's drama department had had a theme it would have been, When's Practice? because of all the scheduling conflicts. These conflicts, either personal or with other overlap- ping activities, caused many unorthodox and unproductive play practices causing our direc- tor, Mrs. Harlander, to get a bad case of the nerves. Even through all this the three-act comedy, Deadly Ernest , and the one-act contest comedy play, God's Favorite, were each a big success. In Deadly Ernest , the lead, Henry Gilcrest, thought that life was hopeless and made a rash decision to have himself disposed of by Ernest, a friend of a bum Henry met in the park. Then came a sudden and complete turnabout which gave Henry the will to live, but the deal had already been agreed upon. Since he did not know who Ernest was, he had to dodge all people named Ernest. As it turned out, there actually was no one named Ernest at all: it was just a scheme thought up by the bum in the park. In God's Favorite , the lead, Joseph Benjamin, was visited by a messenger who told him that his faith was being tested by God. Joseph was put through a battery of tests including illness, the loss of his business, and his son going blind. Joseph endured, though, and passed the test to once again have his family and health restored. At the same time we feel the tug of the past reminding us of the infinite number of friends, teachers and experi- ences that have combined with our individual selves to make us what we are.
