The sounds change with the use of various instruments and with the innovations in technology. Music reflects the culture and changing lifestyles of each passing year. The music of 1983-4 brought with it changes of dress and hair styles such as the “new wave” look of short pants, loud colors and prints, “blues brothers” glasses, ripped sweatshirts, flipped up collars, skinny ties, and bobbed-frizzed hair. Break dancing and moon walking became the dance crazes, and a single gloved hand was the trademark of many Michael Jackson fans. A new visual dimension enhanced music further with the introduction of a cable TV station devoted solely to rock video. The physical fitness craze of the 1984 Olympics also got in on its share of the beat with everyone tuned in on earphone and a portable “walkman” radio. Those who liked their music on a louder scale carried a “ghetto blaster.” The new blended with the old in chorus and as we listened to a variety of styles from American musical history presented by artist Curly Ennis. In 1983-84 we worked, played, studied, sang, and danced to the beat ... 2 Above: Artist in Residence, Curly Ennis shares his knowledge of the development and history of music in America. Below: Pep Band gets the beat for Homecoming. 5 JULIE ARNESON Band 1,2; Chorus 4; Cheerleader 4; Basketball 1,2; Volleyball 1; Wrestling Stud. Man. 4; Teacher's Aide 4; FHA 2. It seemed to be a message taken seriously by junior high musicians. With a lot of effort, enthusiasm and “good old-fashioned” practice, they proved that “practice makes perfect.” “Wheels,” the light hearted junior high musical about the invention of the wheel and its roll in history, was a great hit with audiences of all ages from elementary students through adults. FFA’s Time to Shine” was the 1984 State Convention theme. The Milford FFA Chapter did shine all year long by winning over 25 trophies and plaques from county fair time in the fall to the tractor driving competition in the spring. Milford was among the state’s top four FFA chapters this year. Each month the parents of an officer sponsored a supper to plan impending meetings. These meetings included pro- grams featuring Jim Brhua on game conservation and laws, Alan Dunlap on obtaining loans for projects, and a Southeast Community College demonstra- tion on grain dust explosions. This talent was confidently entered in conference speech contest at Sutton High School. Mike Boden, Tom Dawson, and Machelle Rediger brought home superiors, and Mike Kahle and Jim Robertus received excellents. Members were involved in planning for Homecoming and sponsoring the Homecoming dance. To raise money student council members worked at concessions, held several cake raffles, and sold May Day baskets. During National Education Week, the Student Council recognized each faculty member with “an apple for the teacher.” As a fun project for Valentine’s Day, Student Council sponsored a “Heart to Heart” computer match-up where students and teachers could fill out a questionaire and then be matched up with others who shared similar responses. The results were fun and sometimes surprising. Enthusiasm and good leadership were the keys to a successful year. ■ Basketball Cheerleaders: From bottom to top; C. Leichty. '85; C. Haddad, '85; D. The season turned into one of great rewards for athletes and coaches. Milford opened with a 2 point loss to Wahoo Neuman. Even though it was a loss, it gave the team a feeling that they could play close against a good football team. In the 2nd game at Geneva, Milford snapped a 13 game losing streak by coming back from a 6-7 1st half score to win 12-7. The win was sealed by 2 consecutive goal line stands with time running out in the 4th quarter. The victory caused a great celebration and confidence was pumped back into MHS football. Victories over Hebron, Wymore, and Lincoln NE Reserves followed. This brought on the showdown with 1 ranked Wilber-Clatonia. Wilber was heavily favored, but Milford dominated the game for 3 quarters making the score 14-6; late in the game Wilbert scored and made the extra point to send the game into overtime. Wilber scored 1st in overtime and made the extra point to lead 22-14. Milford scored quickly on a pass, but missed the extra point to lose the game 20-22. The loss was followed by 3 more close losses; still, it was an excellent turn around year and a great season. Right - Jim Kremer goes for the tackle while Kirk Krcmer watches. No one scored on the defense the last 4 games, and the last 3 games were shutouts. The leading tacklers were linebackers Tim Blair and Mark Crewdson and nose guard Jay Stoa, while Darin Sperling led the team in interception. Offensively, the team was led by Jim Kremer who rushed for 380 yards in 4 games. The experience of T.J. Meyer at quarterback and our ability to throw the ball also made us a better offensive team. The highlight of the season was the 4th game when we went to Raymond Central and beat them 8-0. 58 J. Kremer “goes for the gold while D. Hill blocks the opponent. The team’s strong points throughout the season were its defense and rebounding, led mainly by forwards Jim Kremer, Kirk Kremer, Darin Sperling, and Kevin Dill. The guards, led by Rick Dugdale and Milt Ferris, did an excellent job of pressuring the ball and running the team offensively. The credit for the good season should go to the entire team’s effort, hustle, and attitude. The freshman basketball team started with seven players who also had high hopes of doing well this season, but they had a rocky start by losing their first four games. Just as the team started turning it around two players were lost for the remainder of the season. Despite this handicap, the Eagles never gave up and kept up a super attitude even with a season record of 0-9. The team was led all season long by 8th graders Michelle Nootz and Sheryl Huss. Michelle finished the season by taking 1st at Conference in the long jump, and in the 100 and 200 meter relay team. Sheryl took 3rd at Conference in the discus and 6th in the shot put. Outstanding junior high girls tracksters for 1984 were Sheryl Huss and Michelle Nootz. Dress rehearsals seem to drive some peoople insane! Place an American and his family behind the “Iron Curtain,” mistake them for American spies, and force them to flee to the American Embassy, operated by the incompetent son of an ambassador. The result becomes a Milford High School comedy. “Where is everybody?” was an exasperated question asked by Director Maureen Harlander repeatedly at practices because of the absences. Even with the disappearing cast members at the rehearsals, the production drew laughter from an audience of all ages. Not all the laughter came from planned incidents; for instance, Mr. Hollander (M. Boden) was supposed to accidentally shoot Kilroy (K. Kapke), but the audience found her falling at the sound of a silent gun. Above: Where's the beef?” Left: Krojack (J. After soundly defeating the Raiders 29 - 8, King Kirk Kirchoff and Queen Kim Backes, along with their court, were presented to a cheering crowd. The Homecoming theme was “Puttin’ On The Ritz.” During the week there were three spirit days with the following themes: 1920’s,” “Space 'Em Out Day,” and “Purple Day.” On Thursday the students staged a bonfire and held a snake dance. The pep rally downtown on Friday was a big hit. The parade included the Homecoming candidates, the cheerleaders, the high school band, and last but not least, the senior K.A.D. car which made a noisy entrance. After the game the student council sponsored a dance at the elementary school. 89 K I I K i Outstanding Senior English Outstanding Spanish I Outstanding Spanish II Outstanding Math Outstanding Science Mike Boden Kathy TeSelle Michelle Burgess George Naylor Sherry Lawton Chris Fosler Todd Eberspacher Chris Fosler Outstanding Social Studies Shelly Eigsti Outstanding Accounting Darin Sperling Outstanding Home Ec Machelle Rediger Miss FHA Chris Wohlgemuth Outstanding FBLA Member Kim Backes Outstanding Vo Ag I Terry Piening Outstanding Vo Ag II Daryl Sorensen Outstanding Vo Ag III Outstanding Vo Ag IV Boy and Girls State Troy Piening Vince Stauffer Neal Utter Outstanding Student Athletes Chris Fosler Mike Boden Lori Oakeson Todd Eberspacher Bereuter Institute: Mike Boden, Sherry Lawton. The prom festivities began with a lovely banquet at the elementary gym where the waiters and waitresses enter- tained the guests with delighful songs and dances from countries all over the world. The entire high school gym was elaborately decorated to fit the theme “It’s A Small World.” A magnificent mobile of the world hung from the ceiling at the center of the gym. Couples had the opportunity to visit an African hut, patronize a French cafe, or stroll across an oriental bridge. Everyone enjoyed danc- ing to the music of the Main- street Band. For one magical evening, it was “a small world” after all. Hey, Kirk, where's the bull?” A brightly lit Chinese pagoda invites travelers to step into the orient. The 95th Annual Baccalaureate-Commencement Service was held at the Milford campus of Southeast Community College on May 13th, 1984. The Reverend Terry Petty gave the invocation and the Reverend Ed. Wenger led the 48 member class in meditation. Special music was provided by the Varsity Choir, directed by Mrs. Kim Ward and the High School Band, directed by Mr. Brian Anderson. The band also provided the processional and recessional music. Salutatorian Sherry Lawton and Valedictorian Christine Fosler gave the commencement addresses. After Superintendent of Schools Russell J. Pedersen awarded a large number of scholarships, High School Principal Dale Hall presented the students to the school board and to the community. Reverend Petty closed the ceremony with the benediction. The Class of ’84 was escorted to and from the ceremony by Marshalls Darin Sperling, Christy Leichty, Mark Minchow, and Kathy TeSelle. As we listened to the beat of Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Culture Club, or the spirited themes of the 1984 Olympics, we became aware of the different styles of musical communication and of the way music relates to our culture. The movies Terms of Endearment and Footloose also suggested American lifestyles to which we could relate. On TV the commercial question ‘‘Where’s the beef?” became a favorite phrase. As we capture the memories of the past year, we think of the hard work it took for the volleyball team and the wrestlers to get to state tournaments. We also remember the long hours of practice and the determination of the students who participated in band, chorus, drama, and other extracurricular activities. As the beat goes on, we the Class of 1984 bid farewell to our new friends, to our foreign exchange students Caroline and Nikolas, and to our old friends, and classmates of many years at MHS.
