A Step in a New Direction ft y Milford High School Milford, Nebraska Volume 29 Table of Contents Organizations 6 Sports 24 Special Events 56 Favorites 64 A Step in a New Direction To a toddler taking his first step the experience is terrifying, but once accomplished the next series of steps is a fascinating adventure. The same feelings are experienced when a youth first enters high school, the place where he will spend the next six years of his life. While attend- ing high school, a series of decisions will be made which will affect the youth the rest of his life. Some areas which will be involved in this deci- sion-making process are whether or not to be involved in sports, which classes to put on his schedule, and which organizations to become a member of. As he strolls along, the pace seems to quicken with being involved in dances, accomplishments, deadlines, dating, and reaching out and taking his chances of exploring what life is all about and has to offer A Move Onward and Upward Stepping up in years until his Senior year, the times are full of excitement with continuous directional steps along the way. When the final corner is rounded in high school and he is on the final stretch of high school, the Senior year is once again filled with new and larger stepping stones. Some of these pathways are related to furthering his education or to walk right out into the working world. Meanwhile he must find out what inter- ests will take his fancy and what will he build his career on. Another crossroad to endure is that of marriage and the family life. After that the steps which were once small baby steps have now grown into large confident strides, ones that will have to face those endless path- ways that are constantly changing in the road of life. But no matter at the size of the step we are taking or if we are strolling or running, we are never quite sure of where we will be headed, we can only be sure of where we have been, like looking at footprints in the sand. And from them we will be able to step up and clear our way fora brighter future. National Honors Society (L to R): K. Grimes, J. Stutzman. A Wurst, B. Roth, C. Schweitzer, L. Plessel, D. Ahl, S. They promoted the jury system and made it available to all students, plus handled more student government projects to make themselves better known. The big project this year was the painting of the lunchroom. The Student Council chose this project to hopefully revive the school spirit that once roamed the halls at Milford High. Thanks Student Council!! The Math Team participated this year in the 19th annual Creighton University Mathematics Field Day. Milford entered two teams, each consisting of five members. They competed in Division two, which con- sisted of class B and some smaller class A schools. All of the students finished the difficult mathematic problems in the upper half with Karen H., Deb D., and Karen G. finishing exceptionally well. The Math Team did a super job and is hoping to do even better next year. Front Row: Karen G., Karen H., Todd V. 2nd Row: Jeri K., Jenny P., Doug M., Kathy B., Linda R. To start the year off, the officers went to Miss Erb- man's house for supper. For FBLA week the officers put on a Business person's Coffee and brought cookies for the teachers lounge. The organization held a fall dance in November and the officers had a toy drive for a Lincoln orphanage. The new advisor did a great job keeping the group going. At State Leadership Convention (April 2-4) the chapter won a trophy for best activities report. Sonja Pla- cek placed 3rd in spelling and 6th in Business Communications, Marilyn Forst received two Flonorable mentions; one in proofreading and the other in Typing I, Knowledge, and Jennie Harral won honorable mention in the Job Interview con- test. We were very proud of these awards. Sonja Placek resigned as Parliamentarian because of a heavy schedule and Brenda Roth was voted in as the new officer. Sonja did a super job as an officer but felt it would be better for the chapter if she resigned. The year was brought to an end with the elec- tion of next year’s officers and a chapter party. Mrs. Cooksey, an Artist in Residence from Hastings Col- lege, visisted our school to aid our woodwind sec- tion. From this assistance, a flute choir was assem- bled complete with a bass and alto flute. Concert band is working hard to preparing for various per- formances. Senior Kathy Becker had the honor and the skill of participating in Nebraska’s All-State Honor Band. The Sr. High Band consists of Jazz and Pep Band which does it’s share in supporting Milford High School. Everyone works hard and does its share for achieving the success of the band. 18 K. Becker, M. They used their salesmanship abilities to sell 46 cases of light bulbs around the community. The profits from the sales were $1,300.00 and the money went toward buying new robes for concerts and contests. The robes were first worn at the Christmas concert, making a striking debue of Purple and White with Eagle emblems on the sleeves. Cheerleaders The cheerleaders kept busy with their regular duties of planning pep rallies, and cheering our teams on to victory. The football cheerleaders provided the guys with special treats during pre-season. During homecoming they decorated the senior’s houses and prepared breakfast for them. The cheerleaders worked hard to make this year in sports an extra special one for the ath- letes. J.V. BOVS' BASKETBALL: Kim Backes, Chris Fosler, and Sherry Lawton. 22 Girls in Action! During the season the new threat of competition was not always felt, as the teams they met were the same as the previous season but our smaller size showed up in the Class B ratings. Also after competing against old rivals in conference com- petition; the challenge was increased at Districts competing with new opponents. 4 .. . . BH 1 V V i 5RGU Supposedly Milford will only remain a Class B team for two years, but maybe this experience of being the underdog will make the Eagles stronger, more united, more courageous, and more agressive, a better team in the long run. The team was in on great victories and tough losses. An unusual year in that Milford’s tough ground game easily out-yarded 3 of 4 oppo- nents they lost to. Defense as usual was the real dynamite of the team, holding oppo- nents often to a 3 down and punt situation. O t b a I I Thrill of Victory 28 SENIORS: 1 Row: D. Hoins, K. Marlin, J. Stutzman, S. Agony of Defeat 29 30 This year’s volleyball had another terrific season compiling a 10-5 record. Out of those 10 wins, they took second place in the South- ern Nebraska Confrence Tournament held at Geneva, also three players were selected to the all confrence teams. This year’s successful team was an effort put forth by everybody, the players, the coach, and the fans that showed great support throughout the season. (L to R) The Milford freshman and Junior varsity volleyball teams, having finished their seasons with 11 -1 and 7-2 records respectively, provide strong promises that the Eagles' winning tradition will exist for many years to come. A perfect season narrowly escaped the freshman as they fell short in the season opener against a tough Centennial squad. The JV's topped off their successful season with a satisfying win over Friend. 33 Boys' Basketball This season was full of surprises, both encourag- ing and disappointing. We started the year terrificly with four tremendous wins. Two of our players made conference, Doug Hoins made first team and Terry Hauder made second team. Although our team had their ups and downs we still come out of the season with a record of 10-10. Standing; Coach Bargen, Terry Hauder, Doug Murray. Russ Riley. Jim Stutzman. Jon Thomas. Doug Hoins. The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team had one of those seasons, where nothing would go right. No matter how hard they would try everything seemed to back- fire. The first gamed seemed like the gals were out to prove their skills. Then bad luck started to take its toll. First Karen Williams pulled ligaments in her ankle and had to sit out for two weeks. Then Michelle Boss tore all her ligaments in her ankle and missed out five weeks of basket- ball. Jenny Putnam also sprained her ankle, but she stuck it out and kept playing. At one time, three of the five starters were hurting with bad ankles. A strong point about this year was the fact that no one would give up! When the chips were down they just gritted their teeth and fought back a little harder. They may not have won very many games, but they kept their spirits up and kept fighting. Summed up, this years was a learning experience for every- one. Like they say, You learn by your mistakes!” Best of luck next year and keep striving for the top and most importantly keep those ankles TAPED!! (right Karen?) Senior: Jenny Putnam Even though Milford did not have an outstanding season, they did manage to place two girls on the All-Conference Teams. Senior Jenny Putnam (left) placed on the Southern Nebraska All-Conference 2nd Team and Senior Michelle Boss (right) was choosen to the Southern Nebraska All-Confer- ence 1st Team. Boss also made the All-State Honorable Mention Team. Senior: Michelle Boss 36 With this lay-up Michelle Boss became the first Milford Gal to earn over a 1,000 points. She fin- ished her career with 1,117. “Over the hoop Jenny not under! Sock it to her Beth! Deb Dill is showing us her new dance step, the Defensive Hus- tle. Stay here or I'll trip you. Senior Linda Reid. Michelle shoots for two against Seward during District Play. Jenny Putnam is trying out Debs’ new step. Senior Beth Schramm. Stand back! I know Karate and 18 other Chinese words! Is Deb shooting with her eyes OPEN?! 37 Junior Varsity Basketball The Junior Varsity basketball team with the help of Coaches Wergin and Hubbard, had a decent season with a record of 8 wins and 6 loses. There were several big wins which included winning by as much as 38 and 31 points. Most of the loses were only by a few points including 2 games that were only by 3 points. The J.V. level is one of future goals of being able to play on the Varsity level. During this season there were a few individual standouts. Steve Stabe- now was the leading scorer with a total of 138 points. He was the leading rebounder with a total of 83 rebounds. Steve also had the most points, most free throws, and most rebounds in one game with 20, 7, 8, and 11 respectively. Robert Wohlgemuth had the most offensive rebounds with a total of 33 and Kirk Keller had the most defensive rebounds with a total of 53. Rod Hoppe captured the assists and defensive steals leader with a total of 22 and 38 respectively. Here is definitely a strong foundation for the future Varsity Basketball team for Milford High School. CHEERING ON TO VICTORY. 38 First Row: R Hoppe, T. Vegas, K. Kirkott, D. Philson, K. Bonner, R. Girls’ basketball team's record does not serve the team justice as they lost by a total of only 15 points in the 5 games that they were defeated in. The team was made up of young inex- perienced but very talented girls. The season started off with 3 hard fought games. Sophomores Jamie Stutx- man and Brenda Stauffer (T) turned in strong scoring and rebounding perform- ances. Near the end of the season the team managed to play balanced games both offensively and defensively with the rebounding of freshman Caroline Hog- gins. The games high scoring of Mary D'Eridita, and the defensive play of Susy Klabenes the team defeated a major opponent, Tri-County. 39 Our Fantastic Wrestlers 1st Row: Kelley Burkey, James Smith, Mike Hays, Mike Dunlap, Bob Portz, Melanie Williams. 2nd Row: Brad Burianek, Gordon Chapman, Conway McCormick, Scott Sanders, James Andrews, Jerome Brown; Stu. This year was a year of gaining experience for the Milford wrestling team. The team was very young and not expected to have a winning season. The team grew each week and not only had a winning record of four wins and 3 losses but also placed 2nd at the Wilber Invitational. But what do they spend their time doing? Some continue playing sports such as baseball, frisbee, rollerskating, sledding or bicycling. Others spend a quiet evening listening to their favorite music, watching television, working on hob- bies, reading, or studying homework. Excitement may be on the minds of others, this will take them down to the Dairy Queen cruising around town, or attending a social functions. Many students work after school or on the week- ends to earn that extra spending money. On the weekends some of the students head out for bigger things — seeing a movie, going shopping, cruising up and down O' Street, or eating at Valenti- no's. Of course there doesn't always have to be something to do because many times you will find students just goofing around with their friends. 88 F avurites 1981 Movie — Stir Crazy Song — Best of Times Group — Styx Singers Kenny Rogers Pat Benator Actor — Bert Reynolds Actress —Goldie Hawn Food —Val’s Pizza Prices —1981 Val’s Pizza (med) $ 6.00 Hamburger $ .49 Can of Pop $ .45 French Fries $ .45 Ice Cream Cone $ .45 Movie $ 3.00 Jeans $18.00 Gas $ 1.20 Jese Reed Science C Cheryl Meyer Home Ec. Teachers, the mysterious creature that hybernates in classrooms and is always ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting student with homework, pop quizzes, and the dreaded final exams. To many stu- dents this may be the concept they have of teachers, but much to our surprise teachers are people too. After a hair-raising day in the classroom, and sitting through boring meetings, we students sometimes wonder what these teachers do when they finally leave the classrooms behind and head for home. As a special feature we hunted down these teachers to get some ideas about what they enjoy doing apart from correcting exams. In Response to Our Questionaire This Is What Your Teachers Said .. . It was announced before the polls were even closed that Republican Ronald Reagan had won with a landslide over Jimmy Carter and John Anderson. However, on March 30, an assassina- tion attempt on our new president was attempted. But after a few weeks spent recovering from his wound, the Presi- dent was again busy with his work. 100 In the fashion scene, Brooke Shields shocked the nation with her daring ad for Calvin Klein designer jeans. Because of Ronald Reagan’s obsession with jelly beans, the easter bunny had to contend with a short supply. The nation mourned over the murder of former Beatle John Lennon. Ones of rising up as a Class B school, getting top honors in club activi- ties, meeting new teams and challenges in sports as we grow, this year's Homecoming, the western Prom, a student government that grows more pow- erful to meet the students' needs, and changing the looks of our school while planning for bigger and better days. Things that will also lodge in our memo- ries although not so fondly is the bomb threat or maybe the tornado warnings, and most probably the detention program. For each one of us we have our own special memories to look back on, of times with good friends and the places we would always go to. Our foot steps have now grown larger and we no longer skip along as kids, but instead the road has once again changed its course and we are standing tall and striding with confidence in the direction of our dreams.
