Q' M' 6 Jie Published by THE CLASS OF 1955 MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL Milford, Pike Co. , Pennsylvania Daicatiarz We, the graduating class of 1955, dedicate our yearbook, Auf Wiedersehn, to Miss Frances I. Hankins. Miss Hankius has been our advisor for the past two years, and her efforts have helped to make our activities successful. Her competence as a teacher and her unfailing sense of humor will always make her stand out in our memory as we recall our high school days. It is our hope that in dedicating our yearbook to Miss Hankins, we may in a small way express our gratitude to her. ' --THE SENIORS lfrimivalis' ,flflessagv TO THE CLASS OF 1955: You are about to reach the goal for which you have striven for the past twelve years. The attainment of this goal will be but the starting point of a new race in every earnest life. Every effort, every sacrifice, and every a- chievement increase your power for further progress. The purpose of your training here was not merely that you might acquire knowledge, but that you might gain personal power so that you could bring things to pass. It is hoped that your education here has in some measure given you an enlarged power for personal enjoyment and an increased capa- city for serving others. The greatest good that can come into anyone's life through education is a personal richness, power, and beauty. As you go forth into life, do not be afraid to work. It is not a disgrace, but a blessed privilege, to work. Your success in life will depend upon your readiness and ability to do the work the world has for you to do, If you will put forth your best effort in doing each job as it comes along the best it can be done, be assured that there will always be a place for you in this world. Your greatest aid or hindrance in life will be your own character. It has been wisely said that we bring nothing into this world but capacity and take nothing from it but character, Character is above all learning. It is what you really are. It lives within the inner sanctuary of your own soul and can- not be touched by the hands of another, May you carry with you wherever you go standards of noble living and right thinking which shall contribute to the advancement of yourself, your country, and all mankind. In doing this you will not only bring honor to yourselves but also reflect honor upon your school. - May the richest blessings of our God ever abide with you. We got off to a good financial start by having a very profitable St. Pat- rick's Dance and selling basketball pins as a minor activity. When we returned in September, our class had shrunk to thirty-four. We had lost Helen Baker, Frances McKean, Betty Newland, Jean Stark, Gerhard Klirnrn, and Harold Tampier. Robert Miller transferred from Beachlake and Claire Achenbach who came from Belgium joined our class. Our homeroom was shifted to Room 11 with Mr. Cramer as our sponsor. Because of our misbehavior we were not allowed to hold our dance, and our only activity for that year was a food sale. Anita Dammann received the Biology and the Home Economics prizes this year and Thomas McKean won the improvement prize. Miss Hankins welcomed us in Room 20 for our junior year. Lewis Myers and Betty Sebring left us during this year. Lewis left to get a job and Betty left to be married. Lillian Prehn joined us in November. Our conduct improved greatly when we graduated into Room 20 and we decided to buckle down and work on our activities for our Washington trip. We held a dance, supper, and Christmas card sale. This year Paul Kleinstuber received the improvement prize and the outstanding citizen award. In May of our junior year the jointure was finally completed and even though we would not be in the new school it was a major topic for discussion. Thirty-one seniors returned to Room 20 with Miss l-lankins as sponsor. Anna Kyle who had been a very capable cheerleader in her junior year decided she would rather be Mrs. Harold Cron. Claire had returned to Belgium. We made a 31033, 42 profit on our magazine sale. Sixteen of us sold over S100 worth of subscriptions and Robert Murphy was high salesman with 5262. 05. Our Halloween dance was a huge success. Again this year we sponsored a Christmas card sale and a food sale. We plan to enjoy our Washington trip leaving on June 6. We are very proud of our class. In our freshman year, Carolyn Hommel won the gold bas- ketball for girls' foul shooting in the Hawley tournament. John Stasa, Pete Herguth and Robert Murphy have been top men on our outstanding varsity basketball team. Pete Herguth as a junior won the basketball trophy for the highest percentage of foul shots in scheduled games. Paul Kleinstuber has been the able basketball and baseball manager for the past two years. Paul has also been the president of G. O. this year. Peggy Fisher has been an active cheerleader this year and Sheila Orben the scorekeeper. Bob Miller is a center fielder and John Stasa the pitcher on the baseball team. Besides our class accomplishments in sports, we have also won scholastic awards. Sheila Orben won second prize in the forestry essay in 1953. Arline Wilckens won first prize in the forestry poster contest in 1954. Patricia Myers won second prize on her forestry essay in ninth grade. As our high school years come to a close, we find six of us plan to enter college and one, nursing school. The rest of us plan to get jobs in the field of our own choosing. We have worked hard to attain our goal-and are very proud of our class. Can't you see why? 611155 Poem One bright day in the fall of 5l, Thirty-seven met to study and have fun, A bang, a shout, a loud, loud noise, Lo and behold the Dingman boys. From Shohola some girls gaily came, The words, I don't know, soon won them fame. Meet the Shohola boys rough and ready, Amiable, kind, tough and steady. There were three girls with a special knack For getting into trouble, and that's a fact. Some of our boys were keen on sports, And were they hot on the basketball courts! In baseball too, they took a part, And were real gone right from the start, With passing time we became more quiet. People seldom heard our former riot, Our class in size slowly diminished And now with school we're almost finished. So meet the great class of 55, As now at the end we finally arrive. Anchel, Brucher, Crosby, all nice people, Degen, Dammann, Erickson, with hearts like a steeple. Feldman, Fisher, Hanna, cheery smiles they bear, Herguth, Hommel, Herr, we will always care. Kleinstuber, Knealing, Lauer, always keeping up to par McKean, Miller, Myers, very amiable they are, Myers, Murphy, Nearing, always full of fun, Orben, Ording, Pickett, we love 'em everyone, Prehn, Roe, Santos, good and kind, Stasa, Wendt, Wilckens, Williams, success they'1lfind. And now we must leave dear Milford High To gain success in the world we will vie, We hope some day to meet again But now, dear friends, we say Auf Wiedersehn. ymbals Our Motto - FINISHED, YET BEGINNING We, the class of 1955, have chosen Finished, yet Beginning, as our motto, in the hope that it will remind us, in all we do in the future, that we are just beginning. We realize that we, as boys and girls, are just starting out into life's bustling world. We know, too, that in the future years, we must strive ceaselessly to attain our goals. With this proverbial expression held in our minds and hearts, we are hopeful that after this, our graduation, the end of our sheltered lives, we will go on to be the suc- cessful people of tomorrow. We pray that we may never falter or regress in our ideals or aims. Yes, though we are finishing our years in high school, we are beginning our lives as tomorrow's citizens. Our Colors - GREEN AND WHITE For our colors we have chosen green and white. Green, the symbol of hope, fresh- ness, and youth, reminds us, as does our motto, of a fresh new awakening life ahead. We are about to encounter fresh faces, fresh hearts, fresh hopes, and fresh ideas. White, our second color, is symbolic of purity, joy, and peace. Peace, the world's greatest desire, is also our fervent personal wish. It is our objective to promote peace among our fellowmen, and, in the best way we can, peace among nations. Of all our ideals, we hope that purity will reign in our thoughts, deeds, and actions. In the past we have found joy in each other's accomplishments, and we hope ever to ra- diate inspiration to others throughout our lives. Our Flower - THE CAMELLIA Our flower, the camellia, is a delicate, yet rugged, one. It symbolizes adven- ture, as does Asia, the land from whence it originally comes We, after our departure, shall be seeking adventure, each in his chosen vocation. We are approaching the del- icate pathway of life. It is our hope to remain strong in the years ahead. This blossom is symbolic of separation, as can be seen by the construction of its leaves. After our exit from school, we shall spread out and separate, each going a different way. With these symbols present in our minds and hearts, we pray that the meanings they hold will be reflected in our daily activities in the years to come. 5 IM!! June 3, 1965 Dear Hal, I was glad to hear that you had been selected as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Best of luck. While I was having lunch at my hotel, I bumped into Anita, Donna Jean, Louise, Patsy, and Mary. I talked with them and discovered that they are all private secretaries for large business firms. Louise is married and has several children. Mary, when she isn't working in her office, is helping out at the local youth center, which is under the supervision of Harry Feldman. While glancing through our local paper I noticed that a plane went down in Africa. Listed among the passengers was Jack, who is now a big-game hunter and a famous explorer, and Bob Murphy, who as you know, is working on the plans for a space-ship to the moon. The hostess was cited for her courage in keeping the passengers calm. Believe it or not, Peggy was the hostess. I was turning the page when I noticed a picture of Lillian. She has discovered a positive cure for polio. In the next column was Cecile's name. She is a medical secretary at Johns Hopkins Hospital in New York. Glancing over the sports page I noticed that Pete I-Ierguth, center of the famous New York Knick's basketball team, scored over 125 points in last night's game at the garden. Also shown was the score of the final game of the U. S. Invitational basketball tournament for high school teams. The winner was the Delaware Valley Joint High School teams, ably coached by John, Last year, as you may remember, this same team was the runner-up. The school's girls' team, coached by Carolyn, was the winner in the State finals. I received a letter from Tom Brucher yesterday. He invited me to visit him. He wanted to come to Milford, but his job as co-director of forest conservation at Yellowstone National Park with Bob Miller keeps him busy. If I go, I want to stop at one of the many garages owned by Pete Nearing. I might even run into Bob Ording, who is one of Pete's best mechanics. I might even go over the new super highway from New York to San Francisco which was built by the Degen Diggers, Inc. While watching television the other night, I saw Arthur Erickson, who is the top announcer on radio and TV. He announced the runners-up in the contest for housewives. They were Grace, Shirley, Beverly, Evelyn, Inez, and Joan. The winner will be announced tomorrow night. Arthur also had a guest on one of his programs. She is a nurse in Pike County and has traveled over 60, 000 miles to visit patients. She is none other than Arline. Next time you are in this part of the country, I'11 show you around. One of the main points of interest is the McKean ranch, which is the largest dairy and beef ranch in the state. Well, I have to go now. Sheila wants me to put the kids to bed.
