HENRY J. DICK This year the students of Miles Macdonell are losing three very valuable members of their staff. These three are our principal, Mr. H. Dick, the girls ' guidance councillor, Miss Blakeman, and a dedicated teacher, Miss D. Ryan. MISS BLAKEMAN You three have given us much of your time and patience in these past years. Always you have been ready with advice and encouragement when we needed it. We consider it our good fortune to have been students under your guidance. MISS D. RYAN We gratefully acknowledge the help and in¬ spiration you have given us, and in gratitude and admiration, we dedicate to you, our 1969 annual. We are very grateful for all you have done. This is one way of saying thank you. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Never, I dare say, in the history of Man have young people had better opportunities to prepare themselves for an apparent carefree, secure, and happy life; at least as far as vocational opportunities and material re¬ sources are concerned. The training courses and facilities available to you meet the needs of practically everyone, no matter how diversified the interests and abilities. Anyone who cares to apply himself and put forth an honest effort seemingly has a wide open door to success and happiness awaiting him. Technology is providing your generation with all conceivable labor saving gadgets that will add many hours of leisure to your timetable. Instant world-wide communication and inter-planetary travel will add new dimensions to life. The computer has added to the realm of the possible practically anything man may dream up. Truly it is a challenging and exciting time in which you are living! ! However, there is another dimension that, I am sure, causes many of you to question the actual realization of this potential carefree, secure, and happy life. It is the human relations dimension. Here lies the vital challenge to all thinking young people. In a time when you are living with the over-kill potential of the nu¬ clear bomb stockpile, the ominous threat of impending bacteriological warfare, air and water pollution by industrial waste and over-use of insecticides, the population explosion, the apparent lessening of respect for law and order; in such a time as this I challenge you to choose your priorities carefully and wisely. You have the option to live only for yourself or to give your life in service for others. As indicated, your possibilities for selfish living are practically limitless. Thereby you could be adding to the total problem of human relations. On the other hand, your potential for ser vice to mankind is also limitless in the light of the many opportunities available to you. May I remind you that He who will lose his life (in service) will find it. This man will realize the carefree, secure, and happy life in the midst of the problems and turmoil all around him. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate all the 1968- ' 69 graduates of Miles Macdonell Collegiate. May you be successful in your further pursuits, whatever they may be, and permit me once more to challenge you to choose your priorities carefully. Henry J. Dick 3 M.M.C.’S HALL OF FAME Hard work has its reward not only in personal feeling of accomplishment but also in public recognition. The students selected for the Hall of Fame know how to express their ideas and attain their ideals. CHESS CLUB After the seemingly never-ending struggle that the staff has undergone to put this yearbook together, we can now sit down with a sigh of relief and ask ourselves if it was worth it. What purpose does a yearbook actually serve? It may sometimes seem merely a weak excuse for a social gathering in the Yearbook room every few days. In reality, how¬ ever, the purpose of a yearbook is to preserve memories. Only the basic facts are recorded, but they arouse in every¬ one vivid recollections, for school activities are a vital part of our lives. To the yearbook staff, the yearbook contains additional memories. As we look through the pages, we can remember the frustrations we endured to decide upon spacing and ar¬ rangements, to chase around after write-ups, and to assemble elusive groups for picture-taking. In spite of all this, I think it was worth it. I would like to thank members of staff, the teachers who aided us, and especially our advisor, Mr. Purvis, for their hard and patience in producing this year¬ book . As editor, I hope that you will enjoy the 1969 issue of the Macadonian, and I wish next year ' s staff the best of luck. 128 INTER COLLEGIATE PRESS OF CANADA LTD. 1315 Inkster Boulevard, Winnipeg 14, Manitoba Publishers — Manufacturers Yearbooks - Yearbook Covers Graduation Announcements Diplomas V ■ ' It vr ¥ M ■ •■ • ' ■ ' ;’v : T ■!.?•■ i;i «’. : ■ ■, iJH i f V; : x: ' •.-;■■■■. ;!
