Wilson. Nicknamed ' Wilson the Wonderful ' by his fellow teachers, he has well-earned his title. His knowl¬ edge of his pet subject - History - is astounding and his ever-increasing collection of historical ' tidbits ' will probably one day result in the publication of a very, very, interesting book. His quiet, modest, and yet stimulating manner in the classroom has won for him friends in every quarter of the school. To both faculty and students, he is the ideal teacher and a fine friend. We thank him for sharing his knowledge with us, and hope that some of it has managed to permeate our rather ' thick ' skulls. These incentives are sometimes successful, but a person is not truly educated who is motivated in his or her education by one or more of these objectives. The incentives which will make a person truly educated are - a thirst for knowledge, and a striving to understand the world and the people on it. This can be done by the study of works of great writers, scientists, mathematicians, historians, psychologists and linguists. This striving to understand as much as possible is not confined to one course of study. It applies to academic subjects, and to subjects re¬ quiring special skills. The study of Commercial or Industrial areas, along with the Academic, will be a rewarding pleasure. The greatest rewards for furthering one ' s education are the feeling of understanding, the feeling of being useful to others and, what every human being craves, the feeling of being needed because of one ' s knowl¬ edge and skill. These are the incentives, the inner drives, which will motivate to true education. J. E. Scarrow B. A. , B. Ed Principal LEFT TO RIGHT: Neil Taylor, Vice President; Barbara McGregor, Treasurer; Linda Walker, Secretary; Wayne Eliuk, President. 5 a sprinkling of friendly PRESIDENTāS MESSAGE It is unfortunate that everyone cannot be a high school president because as such one learns things one could never learn anywhere else or in any other way so rapidly. Not gigantic things! Not secrets to suc¬ cess or to infinite happiness - but little things; important little things. Many of these little things can also be learned by simply being active and co-operative during your high school life. Being active not only socially, but also academically, sports-wise, and club wise. Being co-operative not only with your classmates, but with your teachers, your principal, your clubs, and your committees. In a high school the size of Miles Mac co-operation and competition are the essences of success. I am very grateful to those who let me be president this year and to those who helped me be president. Everyone made 1962- 63 a good year but in particular Neil Taylor, Linda Walker, Bar¬ bara McGregor, the student council, the committee chairmen and the club presidents deserve well-earned credit. Mr. Mead¬ ows, the student council ' s teacher advisor and all teachers who devoted their time to extracurricular student activities also are to be praised. Naturally, many of you will never return to Miles Mac. I wish you, in particular, the finest future with only the minimum of tradgedy and the very maximum of happiness. Someday, you will look back into this yearbook and you will remember Miles Mac and then you will know your years here are among the most memorable in your life. Wayne Eliuk School President 1962-63 STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Chris Westdal, Rich Hrabec, Mr. Szudiak, Gerry Adel, Lawrence Borysyk. SEATED: Paula Evans, Frances Willis, Barbara Rudyk, Jo-Ann Hall, Leslie Kolisnyk, Frances Negrych. After several weeks of considering a large number of applications for various positions on the school yearbook - the Macadonian - a few members of the teach¬ ing staff picked the following people for the Yearbook staff: EDITOR CO-EDITOR PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR FEATURE EDITOR ART EDITOR COPY EDITOR ASSISTANT COPY EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGER ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER ADVERTISING TEACHER SPONSORS Lawrence Borysyk Chris Westdal Leslie Kolisnyk Jo-Ann Hall Richard Hrabec Frances Negrych Barbara Rudyk Frances Willis Paula Evans Bob Kozminski Mr. Stevens, Mr. Meadows Mr. Szudiak Usually, the yearbook staff met every Wednesday noon-hour and every Activ¬ ity period in the Library Conference Room. Occasionally, the Staff was fortunate enough to have Mr. Cringan from the Inter-Collegiate Press come to advise them in the various ways of setting up the Yearbook. The Yearbook Staff has worked hard to make this Yearbook a success and we hope you enjoy reading THE 1962-63 MACADONIAN As another school year ends I am sure that all the pupils will leave this school a year older and perhaps a year wiser. To some of you the end of this year will be just the start for the next school year. For others, however, this may mean a start in the business world. Which ever you may be, the best of luck to you all. The year that has just slipped by brought many changes not only to the school but also to the world. It was a year that almost saw World War III break out - a year which saw Russia orbit twin space travelers - and a year in which the Canadian people had to go to the poles twice to elect a government. Closer to home, it was a year which saw Mel¬ rose High School become a part of Miles Macdonell Collegiate. This was a year we spent at Miles Mac. To help you remem ber your year we present to you your yearbook, the MACADONIAN. Lawrence Borysyk Yearbook Editor 1962-63 ⢠v . v V.. ā Ā 5 ! rĀ 1 i y rr. Am %Ā£ . . si? -.., ADMINISTRATION Miss E. J. Wilson. M.U.N.A. M. U. N. A. is the popular name of the Model United Nations Assem¬ bly. It is an unusually successful combination of youth service project and of an international service project, organized by the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Canada. M. U. N. A. is what the title suggests - an attempt to reproduce the United Nations itself - in a locale far from its headquarters in New York. Each nation that holds membership in the U. N. is represented by a pair of Grade XII high school students. These students are selected, spon¬ sored, and sent to Winnipeg by Rotary Clubs in cities and towns in the Northern United States, Western Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada. This year Miles MacDonell ' s delegates to M. U. N. A. held April 19 and 20 at Grant Park High School, were Dana Stewart and Grant Lemon. Dana and Grant, counselled by Mr. R. J. Wilson, represented the Con¬ troversial Country of Syria, a member of the Asian bloc. The assembly, highlighted by various walkouts, the first being led by our Syrian delegates, and many protests, was concluded by a formal banquet and dance at the Royal Alexandra Hotel where all the Delegates and their counsellors had the honour of being addressed by His Excellency Micheal Comar, Israeli Ambassador to Canada. 89 DRAMA CLUB STANDING: Jim McCarthy, Lang Watson, Randall Duplak.
