The Girls ' Varsity Volleyball team did very well this year. At the end of the regular season, we were in fourth place. As a result we participated in the play-offs which were held at the University Field House. We defeated West Kildonan, which was in second place, in the semifinal game, but we lost to Transcona in the final game. The members of the varsity team, as well as those of the freshman team, presented gifts to Miss Strimbiski and Mr. Wilson at the end of the season in appreciation of the time and effort they had put into coaching the team throughout the season.

VARSITY FIRST ROW: Bob Jackson. SECOND ROW: Gary McEwen, Ed Smith. THIRD ROW: Jerry Webb, Gord Murphy, Terry MacDonald, Dave Schab, Mr. L. Elfenbaum. FOURTH ROW: Dave Walker, Alvin Barrett, Allan Flatt, Dave Kisil. The league opener for Miles Mac was at West Kildonan on October 2nd. This was a disasterous afternoon as the Buckeyes walked home with their first defeat. The following Wednesday the green and gold spikers travelled north to River East Collegiate to play the neighbouring North Kildonan six. The game was close at the begin¬ ning but near the end the experience of the Miles Mac Club started to show as they made fewer mistakes than their opponents. A week later Miles Mac played their first home game against West Kildonan Collegiate. The Buckeyes did not seem to have enough steam as West Kildonan gained another victory after a hard fought game. On Monday October 18th, Miles Mac made a trip to Windsor Park. This game was Miles Mac ' s from the first serve until the last whistle. They had very little trouble knock¬ ing over the short St. Boniface team. The following Wednesday the Buckeyes were host to Norwood. This proved to be a very exciting game with Miles Mac losing on the last serve. It was a well fought game all the way Miles Mac ' s first encounter with Transcona was a successful one. They dumped the green and white Furies in championship style. This was the best team effort of the Buckeyes this season. Windsor Park travelled to the East Kildonan Collegiate and made another unsuccessful attempt to tame the green and gold team from Miles Mac. The East Kildonan lads made good use of their height advantage. The game on October 30th at Nelson McIntyre was a thriller. The Buckeyes won the first match by six points. They lost the second match by two points. The rubber match was finally lost by the socre of 20-18. Transcona then travelled to East Kildonan Miles Mac again showed the green and white Furies who was boss. The Furies never seemed capable to rally more than two points at any time. The final league game was played at home on November 1st against the River East lads. Our own boys had very little trouble in subduing their opposition in two straight games. Thursday, November 9th was the big night the valleyball playoffs were held at the University of Manitoba Students ' Union Field House. The Buckeyes played the league win¬ ners, West Kildonan, in their opening game. This was a disasterous night for Miles Mac as the Buckeyes were wiped out in their first game. West Kildonan was the eventual winner of the tournament. After a successful season theBoys ' Varisty Volleyball team would like to thank their faithful supporters who never gave up until the last whistle. The team is sorry they did not bring the championship home to Miles Mac but with more experience next year they hope to do better.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL The past basketball season a first was observed in Miles Mac. For the first time in our history we had a freshman basketball team. This team was entered in a freshman league which also included Windsor Park, Nelson Mac, Transcona and River East. The team had an average season. In fact it was just that, as the boys won 4 games and lost 4 games, finishing in third place which was sufficient to get into the play-offs. The boys won out over Transcona and River East twice each, but unfortunately lost both games against Windsor Park and Nelson Mac. p p.SL X j $ 1 £ . EV FIRST ROW: Darryl Clark, Manager; John Radcliffe, Paul Sambrooke, Wally Prevalnig, Kii Sorensen, Dick Long. LAST ROW: Neil Taylor Co-Captain; Ted Chmielowiec, Dennis Glavin, Richard Sallee, Richard Deely, Randy Brekke, Mr. L. Elfenbaum. The boys had a good time playing basketball and I ' m sure they provided enjoyable games for the fans who came out to watch. The initial year of the Girls ' Freshman Basketball proved most successful for M. M. C. ' s freshman girls. They finished the season as the S. C. A. A. Freshman Girls ' Basketball champions for 1961-62. Congratulations girls! FIRST ROW: Nicola Panchysak, Sharon Smith, Lyn Smith ; Nora Verhagen, Co-Captain; Jos ie Dudek. LAST ROW: Vicki Scrutton, Manager; Jean Bowcott, Marilyn Franks, Ruth Tiede, Captain; Diane Ross, Arlene Goodman, Miss Y. Strimbiski.
