M11 zu To the class of 1957:- In my reading, I ran across this brief paragraph giving'7 characteristics of an emotionally mature person. I think it is very good, and deserves some thought. l'd like to pass it on to you. Emotional maturity is difficult to define exactly because no one is altogether emotionally mature all the time. But in general, the emotionally mature person has these characteris- tics: 1. He is realistic. He judges a situation as it exists, not as he wants it to be. When problems arise, he makes the best of them--instead of running away from them or fighting them. 2. He accepts frustrations and disappointments without developing uncontrollable anger or becoming sick. 3. He stands on his own two feet. 4. He cooperates with others. He is considerate of their needs and interests as well as his own, 5. He uses his abilities effectively, and takes part in activities with enthusiasm and satisfaction. 6. He has the capacity to love someone besides himself. I. He is capable of postponing present satisfactions for a future greater good. Congratulations to all of you. I have enjoyed knowing each of you, and my sincere good wishes for the future. Marilyn Beeler

What am I going to do now? This is a question that every high school student upon graduation asks. High School gradua- tion is a time for decision, a time for both looking back and looking ahead. Formal education attempted to provide the graduate with the physical, mental, and social skills necessary for a satisfying and rewarding life that he is going to follow, so that these skills can fullfill their inherent potentialities. Not only must the high school graduate determine the direction of his or her life, but also the goals of that life. Goals must be established, so that when they are attained the individual will experience a maximum amount of satisfaction, The ultimate aim of life is happiness. All of our goals must be considered in the light of this ultimate aim: that is, each goal should be a stepping stone to the attainment of lasting happiness. Happiness, however, is not easily attained in our complex, modern society. Modern life, with its technological advance- ments and accompanying international tensions, sometimes make life a trying period. Often, the future is described to the high school graduate as an overpowering and unanswerable problem. Actually, it is not. However, if the individual is to achieve happiness, life must be faced realistically with courage and confidence. This, then is the real question that faces the high school graduate. How can I achieve happiness in our complex, modern society? The answer can come only from the individual, and each individual will have a different answer based upon a critical consideration ofthe various directions and goals of life in relation to the ultimate aim of life: Happiness. Richard L. DeShriver It seems strange to use the word commencement to mean the day on which you leave for all time the school work you have carried for twelve years. Completion would seem to be a more appropriate term. But this would not be life, for in the world everything that marks i an end also marks a beginning. The end of one day is the commencement of another. The plant blossoms, bears fruit and seeds then sheds it foliage, but it has prepared for the beginning of another life. So it is with education. What you have learned in school so far is only the beginning. Up to this time your work has been directed and made as easy as possible and as beneficial as your teachers could make it. You have been a good class, dependable, cooperative, and willing workers. All these things should have prepared you so that now you can rely on your own efforts for the success you make of your life career. My best wishes go with you as you leave Miles High and com- mence the larger life which lies beyond. May your hopes and dreams come true. Mrs. G, C. Bartlett
