Congratulations to all of you who have done so much to make this year one of definite success and achievements. It is now recorded in this annual as a proud part of the history of Miles High School. You have reached this point in your lives only through work, patience, love and self-sacrifice. Remember that you are to- day where your accomplishments have brought youg you will be tomorrow where your endeavors take you, Ihave great confidence in your ability to choose the highest goals andl wish each of you the best of luck in the new and exciting life which lies ilQiad'?3,J: 9r1 WW Us, IU by AUM We, Pjsxllfdf Williams ' ,' ' J 1' ff A093 L, M ' fin l , auto MW , W4-Rf fi-ff? U M By commencement I mean the embarkatiorffgzlto life' long, long journey. The past twelve years may have seemed a period of sweat and toil, yet how fruitfull as you gathered together the tools and supplies for your long journey, As you set forth on this journey you must change. Your childhood problems became mature ones beset with responsibility and challenge. Until now your problems have largely been shouldered by your parents. Let the fuel for your journey be your life long goal. If it has not been set, do so soon, and do it with caution and wisdom. Through trial, experience and wise decision choose your 1ife's work and make it one full of interest and enjoyment. Weary is the man, who dislikes his field and how difficult to reach his life long goal. What is happiness without a home? So choose a life long companion--one who will stick by you through thick and thin, one who will share your joys and sorrows--they are hard to bear alone. What is home without a family? So reproduce your kind, two t q f or many, enjoy, love and cherish them, and live a life full of happiness and adventure. What your future holds depends on you and how you use the km A tools of your trade, May it be everything you wished for. So spin your wheels -- make tracks fly and go forth with zest and zeal, for there's only one life on earth and that life is now, Ray Kennedy

To the graduating class of 1957--Congratulations. Emerson once said, Make the most of yourself for that is all there is of you. So, do your level best where you are every day of your lives. Today is the day for which you have been waiting. Twelve long years have been spent preparing for it. Yesterday and tomorrow are far away nothing--the one a faint memory, the other a vague promise, But this is your day--Graduation Day. When one door closes, another opens, but sometimes one looks so long and happily upon the closed door that he does not see the one which has opened. Opportunities are knocking at your door constantly and Iknow the Class of '57 and I also know that each and every one of you will make the most of these open doors. I sincerely hope the memories of our association will be as pleasant to you as they will be to me. Best wishes and good luck, success, and happiness all through life. No matter how high you rise, you'll always tlnd infinite distances above. Bernice Taplin Dear Seniors, As a member of the faculty, it is sometimes difficult to recall my own thoughts and feelings as a high school senior. However, if memory serves me correctly, it is a time of mixed emotions and a time of trying to look both forward, and backward at the same time. When you think back on your school days at Miles, Ihope your memory of music activities will give you pleasure and satisfaction. You should be able to sense some accomplishment in that department as in all others. Iknow it has been a pleasure for me to watch the progress and growth some of you have made during my three short years at Miles. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to work with all of you. In the future I hope that you will all find a place in your I 1 life for music, Use the tools you earned in school so that they 2 don't rust beyond repair. Try keeping them sharpened at all ftixilff 'N times, and when the opportunities come for newer and better ' 1 tools, try to be prepared to use them. To me, the most I Q satisfying thing about music is that there is always more to i learn and enjoy, Rest assured, that no matter how hard you s 5 try, you'll never exhaust the world of music. f Marlene Firman ' 1 N-r-L.,

What am I going to do now? This is a question that every high school student upon graduation asks. High School gradua- tion is a time for decision, a time for both looking back and looking ahead. Formal education attempted to provide the graduate with the physical, mental, and social skills necessary for a satisfying and rewarding life that he is going to follow, so that these skills can fullfill their inherent potentialities. Not only must the high school graduate determine the direction of his or her life, but also the goals of that life. Goals must be established, so that when they are attained the individual will experience a maximum amount of satisfaction, The ultimate aim of life is happiness. All of our goals must be considered in the light of this ultimate aim: that is, each goal should be a stepping stone to the attainment of lasting happiness. Happiness, however, is not easily attained in our complex, modern society. Modern life, with its technological advance- ments and accompanying international tensions, sometimes make life a trying period. Often, the future is described to the high school graduate as an overpowering and unanswerable problem. Actually, it is not. However, if the individual is to achieve happiness, life must be faced realistically with courage and confidence. This, then is the real question that faces the high school graduate. How can I achieve happiness in our complex, modern society? The answer can come only from the individual, and each individual will have a different answer based upon a critical consideration ofthe various directions and goals of life in relation to the ultimate aim of life: Happiness. Richard L. DeShriver It seems strange to use the word commencement to mean the day on which you leave for all time the school work you have carried for twelve years. Completion would seem to be a more appropriate term. But this would not be life, for in the world everything that marks i an end also marks a beginning. The end of one day is the commencement of another. The plant blossoms, bears fruit and seeds then sheds it foliage, but it has prepared for the beginning of another life. So it is with education. What you have learned in school so far is only the beginning. Up to this time your work has been directed and made as easy as possible and as beneficial as your teachers could make it. You have been a good class, dependable, cooperative, and willing workers. All these things should have prepared you so that now you can rely on your own efforts for the success you make of your life career. My best wishes go with you as you leave Miles High and com- mence the larger life which lies beyond. May your hopes and dreams come true. Mrs. G, C. Bartlett
