To Mr. Copley, we leave Q-l our extra inches. We don't want him to get lost ln that new school building. To Mr. Price, we leave all the remnants of our worn-out arguments in government class. To Mr. Buck, the boys leave all their sawed-off ends of lumber. Maybe someday he can build a house for himself and a certain llttle nurse. To Miss Cooper, we leave all our burnt. ham, cold potatoes, soggy cakes, tough ple crusts, crooked scams and all other f'.flops in home economics. We hope the next class she has can take a lesson from our examples. To Miss Valentine, we leave all our strike-overs in typing and our in- complete assignments ln bookkeeping. We hope her next class doesn't have as much trouble with them as we did. To Mlss Koethe, we leave all the bowling talent we have. To Hugo, our beloved janitor, we leave an electric vacumn sweeper. Now Hugo,w'on'tehave so much trouble getting the corners clean. To the hot lunch cooks, we leave all our favorite menus. We know they wlll be a great help ln years to come. We also leave a blg double door for the hot lunch room. We figured someone might get hurt trying to squeeze through the present one. Myrna won't be needing it. Joann Muhl wills the three street lights at her -front door to Janet Holtzman. Lester Moeller wllls his shopwork ability to Robert Frahm. He flnds new rulers are high priced. Darleen Meggers wills her extra year of government to Marilyn Petersen so she won't have to work so hard. Phyllis Mangler wills her dimples to Joanne Bruhn. It might help identify him. 14 Joker's Class History It all started one day ln August in 1948, when 40 Freshmen entered Miles High School with hopes of becomlng the class of '52. There were twenty boys and twenty girls in the first three rows of the assembly, but about a week after classes had started, Francis Culier, who almost completely lost his sight, and was forced to leave school. lt was a noisy day in September when the Freshmen came to school dressed up for Initiation Day. The senior class that year dldn't leave out a single detail for us to wear or bring. Our superintendent was Conrad Recktenwald and his wife, Helen Recktenwald, who taught the girls cooking in flrst year home economics. Nora Wagener was our English instructor and W. D. Standley was coach, shop and general science teacher. Barbara Jones, now Mrs. Carroll Hamilton, taught us general business and we had some wonderful class parties. We even were invited to go to Dubuque on a fleld trlp with the tenth grade. Our sophomore year started out very well because we were finally an accepted class of high school. O. C. Sutherland came as superintendent that year and also was the algebra teacher. Ann Bartlett took over home economics and Nora Wagener was back for English. Coach Standley, now better known as Stan , was our instructor ln agriculture and shop. Louise Molin was music ln- structor. Dwane Kyarsgaard left in March bringing our class down to 28 but Allen Schultz came and brought the enrollment back up again. We took quite a few fleld trips for agriculture to various farms. Stan was our class sponsor and onae again we had some fun at class parties. I don't think any of us will ever forget ice skating on the Misslsslppl. The 1950 school year started with us as full fledged juniors and ready for one of the biggest years of our school career. Marilyn King, now Mrs. Kenneth Row dldn't return that year and Juanita Mangler, now Mrs. Arthur Johnson, quit at the end of the first semester. 0. C. Sutherland was our superintendent again Coach Standley was back and had first-class teams in both girls and boys bukerbgll, Nora Wagener was our English teacher and directed our class play, 15 'Cheaper By The Dozen . Harry Morrls was biology teacher, Bob Schaeffer was rnuslc, Bill Olrnstead and De Wayne Erickson were our teachers in typing and shorthand. We worked on the junior-senior banquet under the direction of Ann Bartlett and after many disappointments and troubles had a very successful banquet at the Hotel Lafayette ln Clinton. At moving time, we lost Madonna Hughes, Reynold Miller and Allan Schultz but Darleen Meggers joined our ranks We really hated to see the seniors leave us but were very anxious to take over their place ln the high school spotlight. Oh, Yes, we mu.st'nt forget the new name, 'The Iokers', acquired during a day of isolation. Mrs. Bartlett was our sponsor and it was really swell the way she helped us with the banquet. Well, finally, we are seniors and are -getting close to our freshman goal of being the class of '52. Eldon Struve failed to join us for our last year and thus dropped our class to 34. Elton Copley took the superlntendent's job and also the task of pushing us through that last hard year. Harry Morris returned as home room teacher and also chemistry instructor. Ioan Valentine taught us typing and bookkeeping and Evelyn Burt listened to us in speech class. Blll Price was our coach and also taught government and modern problems. Shlrlle Cooper was home economics instructor for some of the girls and a few boys. Peder Buck was shop teacher and Shirley Koethe was music lnstructor. We finally got our class rlngs, had our pictures taken and went after annual advertisements, feeling very much like senlors. Our class play and junior- senlor banquet cllmaxed by baccalaureate and commencement completed our senior year. I don'r think we can ever thank the teachers enough for pushing as through these last four years. It's been a hard job, we know, ------------ but thanks anyway. 16 Class Prophecy ln the year 1962, we took off for our new found planet, XZY, in our sen sational new creation the X143UCY rocket. Arrivlng we tuned in our super, dooper, looper sonic atomic radar screen turning to channel 0000, double 0, zero nothing. Getting good old Miles ln focus. We see a huge house and for curiosity's sake we look closer and see that lt ls an orphanage. Looklng inslde we come to the superintendents door and whose name do you think is lngraved on this door? None other than Joann Muhl. Joann has quite a time between this and taking care of her own three glrls. As we pass the streets of Miles we see a bright blue uniform standing on the corner of North and Main Street. Don't get us wrong, the suit wasn't so dlrty that lt could stand up by itself, no it was Carol Nielsen. She has qulte a time directing traffic now that Miles has the new school efdltlon. Next we see two big factories. Gerald Smithson has worked up quite a business making cat-tle bunks. He has his o-wn factory down on Main Street ln Miles. He has 150 club calves as a past time. Besides Gerald's factory there is another one turning out 2,000 Smith Shops a day. That's one machine that has 85 different machines in one. We went to the presldent's office to see if we could go through the factory. Who do you suppose the president was? None other than Lester Moeller him- s elf. Yep, he's making over S100,000 a year now. While gazing at the names of the stores we see one that sounds quite interesting. It was called the 'RUSS SODA SHOP . ln looking in the window we saw a small figure moving about behind the counter. Being curious we moved up a little closer. lt was the former Jean McVey. Who would ever have thought she would own and help run a soda shop. As we turned to the airport, a plane has just landed and to our surprise we see a charming young miss jumping our, laughing. It couldn't be but lt ls Ienean Ronnfeldt. She is dressed in a suit of blue and was ' none other than an air stewardess. Down by the railroad we see Shirley Yates. Shirley never quite forgot the song I've Been Workln' On The Railroad' for she ls now head waitress on the Milwaukee Passenger Train and Wayne Daniels ls the cook. Then we see the new Miles Hospital. As the supersonic lens peered through the reception room of the new Miles ,Hospital we see the nurses' names. On the very top of the list, we noticed the familiar name of Myrna Wllke. After ten years ln the nursing profession, Myrna had advanced to the position of head nurse. We're sure Myrna gained this skill through the biology and chemistry classes back in high school. As we leave the hospital, our lens focus on a familiar face. Sure enough it ls Phyllis Mangler and tagglng along behind are six charming little girls, exact images of their mother. By listening to their conversation, we learned that Phyllis had married one of her classmates and was not spending most of her time teach- ing the llttle ones the correct way to handle a basketball. 17 As we look toward the school, we see Shirley Kokemuller. She is very busy slaving over the stove cooking a meal for her family of seven boys. Going into the Miles School, who should we see but the former Beverly Petersen as the home economics teacher and also wife ofthe school super- lntendent. .We then caught sight of the Miles School Gym where Miles was leading 50-l in a basketball game wlth Preston. We then caught sight of a man with a big smile, patting each player on the back and to our surprise we found it was Miles Hi coach, Gllbert Bott. As we leave Mlles, we see a prosperous looking farm. lt is early evening and there in the rear we see Dale lrown mowing the lawn. The former Joyce Hammond is having quite a time keeping the two children from bothering thelr daddy. Joyce and Dale have been happily married now for five years. Next we tune into Green Island, channel number 214785. For those who didn't get it, I will repeat lt, channel 675430. First we sight a large stone house. As we look more carefully at the house, we see a name engraved on the do-or, Dr. Richard Flscher . Were we surprised when we looked through the window, and there on his lap, lmaglne, a magazine. There we also saw a little white house with blue shutters, nestled at the foot of the bluff. Inside the house, we see Mr. and Mrs. Russell Guenther fthe former Gaynell Roel and their two children seated at the breakfast table. They are discussing sending their children to Miles. You see all the little schools around there are closed. Next we see a big baseball game in action. We had been informed that the G.I. Giants were battling the New York Yankees for the world series. Coming up to bat, we recognize Roger Tarr. We hear voices shouting, 'Come on Daddy . So we look lnto the crowd and ln the flrst row we see three little boys with their mother, the former Bethel Colburn. We also see Harlan Daniels. It seems that Harlan has reached his peak at major baseball pltchlng. The Yankees bought him from the Indians last year for a new high, S1,000,000. Leon DePue has retired on the sum he got inventing the shatter-proof baseball catchers mlt to catch I-larlan's fast ball. We next see the International Trap Shoot. Here ve see Glenn Gravert with his S400 Browning Special. Glenn ls competing with some of the best shots ln the world. Oh, its snap to get into this shoot. All you have to do is hit a thousand out of a thousand. Glenn ls now going to shoot three clay birds in a row while standing on his head. Glenn still owns their farm but he has changed lt into a hunting club. Men from all over the world come there to go hunting at the lake. Next we see the Jackson Kennels coming into focus. As we look inside we see Arnle Jackson. Arnie has raised some of the best' toy terriers in the world. Arnie has raised terriers for Xavier Cugat. 18 L From Green Island, we tune our channel to the town of Twin Springs. There we see Darrel Drury- He has started a bachelors club ln Twin Springs. He has 129 members. He wanted 130 members but Joyce Hammond and Dale Brown were married, so this upset the membership. Darrel has gone with about every girl in Jackson County. He says lt eosts too much to keep a wlfe with these high prices. Teeds Grove now comes into focus. Martin Hansen and Mary Hathaway are running a sweet little hatchery in Teeds Grove. They call it Martin and Mary's Little Baby Chicks. Martin has invented seven new breeds since 1953. Oh, yes, they have three sets of twins that are their own. We happened to be driving by a chicken hatchery in Andover when we saw a man running madly all over the street. We knew right away that it was Harlan Eggers. We stopped to ask him what was the matter. He told us that he was the proud owner of 732,021 new baby chicks. We also see that Lavonne Johnson now has her own beauty salon in Andover. She is one of the best beauty operators around that country. She. also has written a book on hair styling. We found Harlan Marx on a horse farm in Andover. He's got a new breell of horses, you know. Two seated ones for Nancy Taplin and him to ride. Allan Naeve now owns 1,000 acres south of Andover where he is working on a better hy-brld seed corn than he turned out last year. The one last year produced only ten bushel to the hill with a stock twenty foot tall. The new one is to be thirty-five feet tall and produce twenty bushel to the hill. As we turn our radar screen to Hollywood, we see Darleen Meggers who is now uhe trainer and mistress of Lassle's great-grand-daughter, Lou- Lou. As we look in on the White House we see Donna Elckert, the private secretary of the president. She is sitting on his lap taking a letter to send to his wife. Looking down at Paris we see Jlmrny Eggers at the National Art Building. Jimmy has taken up art and likes the styles and gals there. Beverly Bartlett has done very well at St. L1.rke's Hospital at Cedar Rapids. She is head nurse now, but she still has trouble with men patients from around her home town that lnsist she care for them. Looking in on the former Dianne Ockelmann where should she be but ln Cheyenne, Wyoming. She helps ber husband run their horse ranch. Right now she ls breaking one of the wildest horses ln Wyoming. She ls one of the best horse breakers in Wyoming. In her spare time, she is raising, no not colts, but her two sons. 19 Turning the screen in one the White House who should be there but Nancy Walker. Guess what she is doing? She is painting the president's por- trait, and a fine job it is too, She gets paid 51,000.00 for doing this. lt is her main work now, but in her spare time, she raises thorough-bred horses for a Horse Club in Washington D.C. As, we look in on the Mayor of C1inton's office we see Betty Jepsen. Her greatest wish has been fulfilled. She is secretary to the mayor. Betty makes quite a lot of money and she is now building herself a small cottage. After seeing all of the 1952 graduates from Miles High we turn our radar screen off. Our best wishes for the next ten years. May they be happy and prosperous. 20 ll ff? ' 4.3. J-. Q., . ., .Q .',. fl? . 44, Q. :gg .,. , . . 4. p .93 -1 Ig. 0, .5- .fff f:I' .3-:f 15:4 kb 33 gg. Miles Student Council 1951-52 was the beginning of a student council in Miles High School. Two representatives were selected from each class. These were Madge Wink and Cora Harmon from the freshman class, Frederick Muhl and Janice Ockelmann from the sophomore class, Bert Strahn and Joyce Hammond from the junior class and Joan Muhl and Carol Nielsen from the senior class.4 Mr. Copley presided at the first meeting. Election was held and Joann Muhl was elected president, Carol Nielsen-vice president, and Joyce Hammond- secretary-treasurer. A meeting was held each Thursday morning at 8:45. Some of the actlvltles of the council were to conduct election of cheerleaders, hold a drive for subscriptions for the Sabula Gazette, help students, plan the School Carnival, and count the 500 bushels of corn of the carnival queen. 37 Editorial Staff Oi Miles Hear Say Lois Papke- -. ----- - Bert Suahn ------ Kenneth Wilcke ----- Joyce Hammond Robert Frahm- ---- Mary Hatheway ----- Nancy Walker Donna Krabbenhoft Glenda Krabbenhoft Fredrick Muhl ---- Verna Milder Cora Harmon Glorianne Wi1ke--- Marlene Hagge P Larry Suer Caroll Flemming Marilyn Petersen Joyce Mangler ----- Marilyn Iungjohann Catherine Belk Senior Typist: ----- Miss Burt ------ Miss Valentine ---- Editor ---- Assistant Editor A ----spam Cover Circulation Manager Chu-News Grade News Reporters - - - -Typist: -- - - Editorial Advisor Production Advisor GERALD SMITHSON DIANNE OCKELMANN Our candidates for Mardi Gras king and queen in Clinton DIANNE OCKELMAN N Candidate for queen at Clinton Machine Company in Maquoketa e .-0-n Carnival Queen Queen Jeanette Meyer, sophomores Attendants were Myrna Wilke, senior: Joyce Mangler, junior: and Natalie Hart, freshman.
