- U.I.L. - U.I.L. Promotes Academic Excellence MHS students competed in many UIL fUniversity Interscholastic Leaguej literary and speaking events this year. These events included Ready Writing, Number Sense, Typewriting, Poetry, Prose Interpretation, Iournalism, Spelling, Debate, Persuasive Speaking, Informative Speaking, Oral Reading, and Science. UIL students prepared for the District contests by competing in non-district meets held at Early, Brownwood, Big Lake, and Angelo State. Miles was well-represented at each of these meets as the students gained valuable knowledge and experience in their respective events. - UIL I OAP Honors Students Advance to Regional State As a result of their District wins, six MHS students advanced to the Regional UIL meet at Texas Tech University this year. These students and their events are as follows: Alan West, Persuasive Speaking, Chuck Wilson, Infor- mative Speaking: Pam Roberts, Prose, Feature Writing, 8: Headline Writing, D'Ann Book, Ready Writing, Paige Ehrig, Typewriting: and Christi Ray, Spelling. D'Ann Book placed fourth in her event which qualified her for the State alter- nate spot. Alan West, Paige Ehrig, and Pam Roberts all placed third in their respective events, which qualified them to compete at the State meet. At the State level, Pam Roberts won the second place silver medal in Headline Writing. OAP Honors District: Chuck Wilson-Best Actor Pam Roberts-Best Actress Andrea Book- Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Laurie Thomas- Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Pam Roberts-Best Actress Paige Ehrig-All-Star Cast Arnold Whitesell- Honorable Area: Mention All-Star Cast Laurie Thomas- Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Regional: Pam Roberts- Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Regional Qualifiers: Alan West, Christi Ray, D'Ann Book, Paige Ehrig, Chuck Wilson, Pam Roberts State Qualifiers: Pam Roberts, Alan West, Paige Ehrig GAP Wins District I Area Titles The 1984 One Act Play Re- quiem cast captured the District 8-AA Championship and then advanced to the Area III Com- petition in Midland. At this meet, Miles was also a winner. This win qualified the play for Regional competition at Lub- bock. Although the play was unable to advance to State, all cast and crew members, along with the directors, can be very proud of their achievements. Mr. Smith and Mrs. Depot display the One Act Play District and Area trophies.
