Jeanette, have retained a special place im the heart of many an Ag. boy. Beginning in 1945 when he taught in what is now First Federal, Mr. White has advised future farmers. Although his teaching duties and his family (six children and five grandchildren) keep him young, he gardens, hunts, fishes, golfs, and plays bridge to relax. His awards encompass the Honorary Farmer Degree, Chapter Farmer Degree and Outstanding Ag. Teacher of the Year. He came about his greatest honor when cashing his first paycheck. His soon-to-be wife was working in the bank. She took his paycheck and he decided to let her continue taking them. Brad Torgerson. Mike McKernan. I really don't think you can get it much flatter. Mike McKernan, Randy Busk. Juniors! Apparently Mr. Beck forgot to have his English Classes read the definition of junior, ie of lower status. Juniors just don't fulfill the description. Ready to accept the role of leaders in school, but not too worried about the future, and juniors could devote themselves full time to the chore of being juniors. With dedication they built a first-class float for Homecoming. And with dexterity they maneuvered not only on the athletic fields, but in their own spacious hall. All this new-found poise and pride came just in time to help the juniors out with important decisions that suddenly loomed up- such as what college they would sort-of like to go to, what they would sort-of like to be, whether to turn the wheels right or left when parking downhill on the driver's test, and the all-important question: What theme for Prom? Working through English and American History, juniors looked eagerly to next year! Juniors! As defined by Webster: opinionated. Webster hit this sophomore class right on the head! In the eyes of these sophomores, the second year around is the best. Sophomores (according to them) always yell the loudest, act the best, debate fluently, dissect with precision, block, tackle, wrestle, shoot, run-in short, do everything better than anyone else. Sometimes they were right, much to the other classes' chagrin! Action is the keynote of these sophomores. Shrugging off the self-consciousness of freshmen, they swept into school full of ideas for the second time around. Would this year's class be content to sit back and let others do the work? Never Sophomores seasoned pep club, German club, debate, chorus, practical- ly every club in the school with their combination of a little experience and a lot of enthusiasm. That word arouses such excitement when a former eighth-grader can finally call himself that. Being a freshman isn't as easy as upperclassmen claim. Freshmen have to con- quer new teachers, new lockers, a new building, and new rules all in one year. They have to impress the rest of the school with their class spirit at pep rallies and often put up with losing the Bulldog just because they're freshmen. Freshmen have to recognize and define that vague boundary between sharing a joke with a teacher and being fresh! The complexities of make-up slips, passes, and admit slips plague freshmen. And that's not mentioning algebra. English, home ec., and all the other classes freshmen take. Learning, always learning, even when they don't mean to! They are learning how to act at high school dances (rare as they are!). They are learning how to debate, make a float, be dramatic or skip out of class. Fresh- men! An armory-gymnasi- um, which will house the high school physical education and athletic programs was dedicated on August 25. The new housing will provide not only adequate facilities for the Milbank Public Schools, but will also accommodate community and civic functions by the general public. Many years of planning and design have gone into constructing this new structure. In some way every member of the Milbank community has contributed toward the successful completion of this project. It is not only an example of what can be done by shared community cooperation, it is an investment in the future of the Milbank com- munity and its educational system. Our appreciation is extended to each of those who brought this project to a successful conclusion. 4ISIK II II III ISI 42 ticird Samplers, I errie and Can-can girts Julie Jensen. The distributive Education class remained the same with its basic purpose being to teach the students to work in a retail situation. Distributive Occupation was made up of fourteen students who, like the D.E. students, worked at various jobs not directly related to retail business. Both D.E. and D.O. are under Ms. Barbara Miles' supervision. Ms. Miles also led the DECA club. Activities of the club in- cluded a homecoming float, selling concessions at wrestling matches, holding candy sales, attending conventions and having various holiday parties. Students in both classes agreed that working under such a program was a good way to prepare for the future. Future Business Leaders of America is another business club of MHS. The FBLA was made up of students who had a business course. The advisor, Ms. Arlene Fox, presided over ' meetings and activities. In order to supplement the funds collected from the members' dues, bake sales, candy sales, and carwashes were held to collect money. 94 Steve Hilbrands: It's all in the wrist. Kim linker: I know I'm photogenic.but twenty-seven poses? Diversified Occupations, above, was a new innovation in MHS this year. Closely related to Distributive Education, Diversified Occupations expanded this area of education and allowed more students to participate. Distributive Education, below, was made up of twenty-one students who worked at jobs around Milbank. The students worked for a least three hours a day and attended a D.E. class for one hour. In class the students were taught the basics of applying a job and working in a retail position. Nancy Dahle: To think I get paid for playing Post Office?? The students, besides learning to speak and write German, learn the way of life, what type of literature is read and how the government works. Eighteen students were fortunate enough to get a first hand look at Germany when they traveled to Germany in March. They arrived at Paris, France, and then went to Munich, Germany, for the rest of the trip. The German stu- dents in MHS sponsor many activities such as roller skating and a German supper as well as parties. The regular meetings are also festive, and besides accom- plishing business affairs, they create a sense of unity and accomplishment on the part of the club. Whether or not this is true for all debate squads, it is cer- tainly true for Milbank's squad. Al- though all the debaters learned enough about the topic; Resolved: that the United States should signif- icantly change the method of select- ing Presidential and Vice-President - tial candidates, to write a twenty- volume paper, it must be conclud- ed that they learned elsewhere. Each member of the squad has peculiarities. For example, Nathan extemped in combat boots with- out any trouble. Nathan, although he is by far the most unique, is not the only one with oddities. However, it is worthwhile mention- ing the success of the debators. They brought home an impressive array of trophies and medals. It is interesting that no one who at- tended tournaments regularly failed to assist in bringing home the hard- ware. Varsity Debate: Standing: Coach JoAnn Thurman, Dylan Koepke, Jim Schumacher, Peggy Bohn, Mike Nowick. On car: Mary Gill, Mary Jo Adler, Nathan Mueller, Alan Mullin. AT I4IE!
